Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How high should you install a TV mount on a wall?

The actual height you mount your TV will depend on the layout of your room. If you’re mounting it above a fireplace or in an alcove, the height of these structures will determine the mounting height of your TV. However, Bob Villa recommends positioning your TV 42 inches on-center in conventional rooms with standard seated viewing.

Can a TV be mounted above a fireplace?

You may be able to mount your flat screen TV above your fireplace for a more streamlined look in your living room. In fact, TV mounting professionals can hang your flat screen TV flush with a wall or from a tilting or full-motion bracket mount in any room in your home. A tilting or full-motion mount may be the best option above a fireplace so you can tilt the TV down for the best viewing angle. Whether the wall above your fireplace is brick, drywall, concrete, stone or plaster, most television mounting services can accommodate your needs. Hardier wall surfaces like concrete or brick will require more labor and expertise to mount, and will likely have a higher price range.

If you want your AV and cable wires hidden in the wall, you will also pay a higher price due to the added time and skill to properly drill the holes and run wires. Before mounting your TV above your fireplace, consult with the manufacturer about necessary distance from heat sources. If the space above your fireplace gets too warm, another location could be better for the longevity of your TV. Your television mounting services may take between one and two hours, or more depending on your home theater setup.

How much does it cost to mount a TV?

Elevate your home style with television mounting services. The national average price for television mounting services ranges between $100 and $130. Factors that can affect cost are the material of the wall you want the TV mounted on, whether you want the wires hidden, and any additional entertainment system connection you desire. It probably costs more to mount a TV on brick, stone or concrete than on drywall or plaster due to the added labor required to drill holes. For example, a company may charge an additional $99 to mount a TV on a brick wall. Here are some examples of average costs for television mounting services:

  • Basic TV wall mount: $40. Does not include bracket, device connection or strip management.
  • TV wall mount: $119. Includes bracket, mounting services, strip management system (for concealing external wires), and connection of all entertainment devices.
  • TV wall mount with wires hidden inside wall: $139.
  • Installation of additional electrical outlet: $65.
  • TV wall mount over fireplace with wires hidden: $179-$249.
  • TV wall mount and up to 5 speakers wall-mounted with hidden wires: $399.

Can you mount a TV in drywall?

Yes, it’s possible to mount a TV on drywall. To make sure the job is done right and you don’t end up damaging your wall or injuring yourself, consider contacting one of the best TV wall mount installers near you. When contacting professionals, make sure you tell them you wish to mount a TV in drywall.

What type of TV mount do I need?

There are several types of TV mounts, including fixed mounts, tilting mounts and full-motion mounts. A fixed mount is sturdy but offers no movement, and a tilting mount tilts vertically. A full-motion TV mount swivels and tilts for the maximum number of possible viewing options. You can also mount your TV from above with a ceiling TV mount. Whichever TV mount you choose, ensure it can support your TV’s weight and size. If you need help choosing and installing a TV mount, contact a TV wall mount installer near you.

Are TV wall mounts universal?

TV wall mounts are generally universal. This is because most TV wall mounts comply with standards set forth by the Video Electronics Standards Association (VESA). Thanks to this set of standards, any mount you buy is likely to be a universal TV wall mount. However, exceptions do apply. Certain brands may not follow VESA standards, and though this is rare, it’s worth checking to make sure you’re buying a VESA-compatible universal TV mount.

Can you mount any TV?

Many TVs can be mounted with standard equipment. However, you need to cover a few details before mounting a TV. Know the size and weight of your TV before you purchase a mount. Additionally, make sure your TV follows the Video Electronics Standards Association (VESA) standards by looking for the VESA logo followed by a number. Match this number to the VESA-compatible mount to ensure compatibility. If you’re unsure if your TV can be mounted, contact the best professional TV mounting services in your area to see if they can offer guidance and help you with the installation.

Can a TV mounting service also install a home theater system?

Yes, a TV mounting service is often able to install a home theater system as well. Companies and technicians who offer flat-screen TV wall mount installation service may offer package deals on installing surround sound and other parts of a home theater installation. To find the best TV mounting service near you that can install a surround sound system in your home, compare companies side by side. Choose a service that’s within your budget and book an appointment instantly.

Work was great, communication and pricing not so great. Ask for estimates. Follow up on them. Was quoted $500 for TV mounts and installs. Charged $600. Ok, close enough. Got charged $1700 to wire two rear speakers. Additional for ceiling repair. Asked for info on what made it so expensive, got no answer. Wish I had known that price up front, cuz it’s bananas. Got charged $800 to mount a center speaker to wall studs. Asked why it was more than mounting two TVs, and got no answer. Wish I had known that price up front, my bad. Had no idea it would be more than mounting two TVs and concealing their cords. Bananas, but I guess it’s on me for not asking. Almost a grand to patch a ceiling hole plus materials. I think you know what I wish I had done first. Ask for estimates. Frank’s work was great, but daaaamn….wish he had been upfront about the cost as we moved forward.

He was simply a pleasure to work with. He was attentive to covid health concerns and always kept his mask on. He was polite and professional in explaining and answering questions. He was prepared with extra screws of different sizes for transferring the wall mount from my old TV. I did not have the correct wiring for my Wi device and he explained exactly what attachment i need to purchase. He even offered to drop by and install it after i purchase it. He was very fast and completed the job in less than2 hours. A big bonus was that he was a great conversationalist having lived in France and Tunisia. I highly recommend him for outstanding Performance!

When we were finally able to connect after a couple of weeks, valid reason on both parties for the delays, he came in and got right to work. He did a good job on mounting the rack for my TV, but I had requested hidden cables so for him to do that, he needed to make a few strategically placed holes in the wall, but we ran into an issue with a cross support in the wall, so he had to make an additional hole right in the middle of of the wall. Again, I authorized him to do so. Everything was installed great and he did ask if I wanted to tape and paint the unexpected hole, but as it was already 2 hours worth of labor, I said I will hide it behind the sound bar for now and I'll deal with it later. My only complaint was that the batteries for his drills weren't fully charged when he arrived on site, so there was a delay in the completion of the installation, about a total of 30 mins, which I was charged for. I didn't bring it up at the time because I was more concerned with the fact that my TV was finally mounted! ;-{) It wasn't until a day or 2 later that it occurred to me. Oh, by the way, you shouldn't complain about the materials YOU chose to complete the project. Especially in front of your client. The face plates you chose to cover the holes for the cables were obviously very poorly designed/made. If you have had bad experiences with them before, why did you choose to use them again? It shows that you might not be concerned with the quality of your work so much as the quantity of work. Get in, get it done, and get out. I figure at this point, it's water under the bridge and no hard feelings, but as a suggestion, make sure your batteries are fully charged the night before and you might want to get a couple extra batteries, just in case.
