After describing my needed garage door repair on Thumbtack, I was contacted the same day by Dan Denker of Denker's Garage Doors. He provided his cell number for direct access. I called and described the issue as well as my desired solution, and he was able to give me an immediate quote and advise me of additional considerations withe regard to the repair. After some comparison shopping and consideration, I decided to hire Dan. He came quickly to my location, inspected my current door and opener, and measured for the new door panels. The next morning, he arrived with the new door panels and spent an hour and a half removing the old panels, replacing the torsion spring, and installing the new panels. Once the new panels were in place, he also noticed that my garage door opener needed to have the carriage replaced due to excess wear and replaced the part on the spot for the cost of the part. He then cleaned up any extraneous marks on the new panels before leaving. Overall, I received excellent service and pricing and would recommend Denker's Garage Doors to anyone in need of service, repair, or installation of a garage door.

I chose Pro Tech Garage Door Service because of the great reviews I read. Sam lived up to the reviews he has received and more. He was very prompt in his response and very professional in his demeanor through out. He came out to fix a broken spring and I ended up getting more work completed. I did not feel pressured at all, but did feel the additional repairs were worth getting done! I feel comfortable that I will not have to worry about my garage door again! Sam also spent extra time educating me on the use of my programmable Chamberlain garage door system!! I will highly recommend Sam and his company for any garage door service needs!

In this case, I was an idiot and made a big mistake with my garage door mechanism. Octavio diagnosed this issue through Thumbtack chat and helped me realize what the problem was (and a simple DIY fix) in less than 15 minutes. I will most definitely be hiring him when my garage door needs more work.

My main Rollup Garage Door spring broke. I checked Thumbtack for local Garage Door Repairs and emailed 24/7 at about 3:00pm on Friday December 1st. Received a response within minutes of submitting. I called 24/7 and asked when the work could be done. The lady on the other end stated before 5:00pm. I thought, NOW THAT IS FAST! Let's do it. Ben called at about 3:30pm and said he was about 30 minutes out and would be here by 4:00pm. Sure enough 4:00pm almost on the dot. I showed Ben to door, he assessed the work, provided a quote and then began the work. DONE - in less than 30 minutes - old springs off, new springs on, Door Calibrated, Cleaned up and Bill presented. NOW THAT WAS FAST. I had texted my wife the problem when she was out at about 3:10pm. The repair took place before she even knew it had occurred. Thanks Ben and 24/7 for the outstanding and quick repair of our Garage Door.

First and foremost Jeff from Pro Lift Doors was awesome. We were really in a bind. Through Thumbtack, Jeff was able to squeeze my garage door repair in between my daughter's two dance recitals, on a Saturday. He completely and thoroughly explained to me what my options were. He replaced my one broken springs with two springs for a very reasonable price. We have been at our house for 15 years and I can't remember the last time garage door sounded so good. On top of that, my second single garage door had been unoperational for about 7 months. Jeff took a look at it and I am happy to say that it is now working with no additional fees because it was something super simple. I 100% recommend Pro Lift Doors and Jeff if you have any trouble with your garage door or if you just need a quick check up.

Do not look any further for your garage needs! They were the second quote I received after the first quote told me I have to replace my entire garage motor and all this other stuff quoting me over $1,100. Seemed odd because my house is only 6 years old. Called Entry Systems and then they came within 15 minutes. Literally 30 minutes later the problem was fixed and confirmed that I DO NOT need a new garage motor. Only charged me the service call fee so needless to say I was very happy. The service tech was so honest, knowledgeable and prompt. Thank you!

    Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How do you fix a broken garage door?

Garage door problems don’t have to mean the end of the world. Garage door repair is typically a one-day process and can be done for only a few hundred dollars. Common garage door repair requests include fixing slow or erratic garage doors, addressing strange sounds coming from the garage door or motor, fixing cosmetic damage such as dents or scrapes, repairing broken doors that are stuck open or closed, and troubleshooting inoperable doors.

The two main garage door operating mechanisms are sectional roll-ups or tilt-ups. Garage door repair services can fix single-car, double-car or RV-height doors. Your garage door may be made of wood, steel, aluminum, masonite, vinyl, fiberglass or another material. The type of garage door repair you need really depends on the type of garage door you have and the issue at hand. Garage door repair pros often charge a flat service call fee to diagnose the problem and provide an estimate. For customers who choose to have the repair done, the service call fee may be applied to the first hour of labor (including time to make the diagnosis). If your garage door is under warranty, the repair may be free of charge.

How much does it cost to install a new garage door opener?

Your new garage door opener cost will vary based on the model you purchase and how long installation takes. Typically, installation pros charge by the hour, although if the pro is also selling the garage door opener they may have a flat fee for the product with installation. The national average for new garage door opener costs (with installation) is between $390 and $650, although the national average cost for the opener purchased alone may be in the $150-$300 range. The three most common types of openers are chain-drive, screw-drive and belt-drive. The chain-drive costs the least but makes the most noise. The belt-drive is typically the quietest and the most expensive. You can expect to pay about the same amount for installation for any of the three styles. The lifespan of a garage door opener is approximately 10 years, depending on quality. A pro may provide opener repairs for the cost of their service call fee or they may charge a flat fee, such as $100 for opener repair. Here are some examples of new garage door opener average costs, including installation:

    • Contractor-grade garage door opener with installation: $300.
    • Chain-drive opener with installation and one remote: $350.
    • Belt-drive opener with installation and two remotes: $400
    • Top-of-the-line opener with ¾-horsepower battery backup, belt drive and nearly soundless operation: $475
      • The majority of higher-end garage door openers are “smart” products and will connect via app to your smartphone for remote access.

How much does it cost to get a new garage door?

A new garage door can add serious curb appeal, not to mention myriad home safety benefits. The cost of a new garage door will vary based on the type of garage door you want and the materials it will be made of. You can purchase a new garage door and have the pros install it for you, but proceed with caution as many installers won’t guarantee their labor if you didn’t purchase the garage door through their company. A new door (without installation) may cost anywhere from $200 to $4,000 or more, depending on size, brand and materials. Here are some examples of average new garage door costs, including installation:

    • Raised-panel, insulated,16x7 garage door: $1,100
      • Without insulation: about $900
    • Raised-panel, insulated, 8x7: $700
      • Without insulation: $550
    • Carriage-house 16x7 garage door with stamped-steel design: $1,500
    • Carriage-house 8x7 garage door with stamped-steel design: $1,000
      • A carriage-house garage door is a barn-style door with handles and hinges; it looks like it pulls out in the style of a barn door but is actually a roll-up.
    • Carriage-house 16x7 garage door with steel and faux-wood overlay: $3,500
    • Carriage-house 8x7 garage door with steel and faux-wood overlay: $2,000–$2,200
    • Solid-wood cedar or mahogany 16x7 garage door with window in top panels: $5,000
    • Solid-wood cedar or mahogany 8x7 garage door with window in top panels: $3,500

How much should it cost to replace a garage door cable?

If your garage door is not opening or has become jammed, you may need to replace the garage door cables. Unless you have the proper tools and know-how, this is a job best left to a professional due to the weight of the garage door and the extreme tension of the springs. The cost of repair will vary depending on your location, the length of the cables you need, and the time it takes the pro to do the replacement.

From a big-box store, basic garage door cables can run between $8 and $20, depending on the product. Your pro may charge you a different cost if they provide the cables. Your cables may not need to be replaced if they have simply come off the track, but broken cables will need to be completely removed and replaced. In either instance, the pros will need to secure or take down the door; unwind the springs; reset or replace the rollers, cables, and drums; and then wind the springs once more. For example, a pro could reset cables that have come off the track for $129.99. The average national cost for a garage door repair specialist is $80 - $110 per hour and the typical cost to replace a broken garage door cable is anywhere from $130 to $200.

How much is it to replace a garage door panel?

Replacing a garage door panel can add significantly to the cost of a garage door repair. Panels run horizontally on sectional roll-up garage doors. They may be made of wood, vinyl, aluminum, fiberglass or steel. Garage door panels can become damaged from hail and other extreme weather, dents and dings, car accidents, and age. When deciding if you want to replace a garage door panel, it’s helpful to compare the potential repair cost to the cost of a new garage door. Panel replacement requires a pro with the proper tools as well as the new parts. With parts and labor you could be paying more than $500 for one new panel. In comparison, a new garage door may cost $800-$1,200 (on average) with installation. If there is a possibility your garage door was structurally compromised when the panel was damaged, have the pro assess whether it’s better to completely remove and replace the door, rails and framework to ensure your home’s safety. It may also be better to completely replace your door if it is severely rusted or dented; if the paint is peeling and fading; if the door model is outdated or you can’t find replacement panels; or if the panels or rails are structurally compromised.

Hire skilled professionals for absolutely everything.
