Marcel and his entire staff were fabulous. The food was fabulous, as was the service. They were very efficient and truly cared that our guests were all enjoying themselves. Many guests complimented Marcel's catering and I would highly recommend and higher him again. My experience was excellent with Marcel.

I needed a caterer for my dad's funeral reception. Spoke to other caterers but Carolina of Gourmet Lover's Catering was the only one who gave her condolences, this meant a lot to me. The full service presentation was tasteful, the food delicious and reasonably priced. There were no exta added on fees like the other caterers. I highly recommend Gourmet Lover's Catering, Boris & Carolina are a wonderful team and you will not be disappointed.

Chef Mumsie and team are the best caterers I have ever worked with...everyone at the event raved about the food...staff was professional and efficient. Chef Renee presented the food and we all began to immediately drool over her signature items. She created unique flavors and items that we had never seen before and couldn't wait to try. OOOHHHHH and when we did!! I can't recall when i've tasted things that just made me want to close my eyes and dance... MMMMMM Mmmmm mmmmm. They took care of everything with magnificent precision. Arrived early, set it all up without a word and fed 80 picky ladies to perfection. The price was very reasonable...you cannot get this caliber of service excellence for this price anywhere. They even helped me select the venue based on what I was looking for since they were familiar with all the best sites. The venue needed no Insurance documentation because of their great experiences in working with Chef Mumsie and her team. If I could I would give them 7 stars and it still would not be enough!!!! If you want OUTSTANDING food and FABULOUS customer service then you're here. . . they will take care of everything without missing a beat and leave you and your guests with very happy palates with delicious food. THANK YOU ladies for the BEST High-Tea we've ever had!!!! We wil definitely be hiring again for our needs !!! Kisses

Ana is a wonderful chef and caterer. Her food is very good and very reasonable. I don't think I have tasted anything she made that was not good. A few of my favorite dishes are chicken enchilada, empanadas, her salad and her cake-pops.

Tonya and her team were awesome. I had a Chinese themed event for 75. They offerred a great selection of entrees, and the guests all raved about the food. Tonya and her team took care of every detail - they organized the rentals, bartender, clean-up, etc. I would definitely recommend them!

Alexis and her crew were beyond words. I gave a memorial for my mother. The house is small, the day was wickedly hot; the party was inside and outside. There were lots of little old ladies who needed special care. I did not even have to ask. They took such precious care of my guests I was moved to tears. The service was impeccable ( and I am retired from 20 years in the high end dining world, so I do not say that lightly.) And they left the kitchen cleaner than they found it. I cannot recommend So Divine Catering and Alexis Kemp strongly enough.

I last minute decided to host a birthday dinner party and was in need of a caterer asap. After submitting my hopeful requirements and details for my party, Steven reached out to me immediately and was the only message I received that had personalization within the text. He truly was reaching out to ME vs copy and pasting his business portfolio. We had a call immediately and within 1-2 days had the menu selection squared away. I gave him very simple directions - 'I love Mediterranean food'... he came back with a Croatian Michelin star restaurant inspired menu with hints of Morocco. He was super communicative and informative on each dish and my party needs. The food was delivered right on time in serving dishes with serving utensils and everything was absolutely beautiful, clean and quick. The two employees that delivered the dishes were also extremely sweet and efficient. Steven normally does larger events, from what I've seen on his website, but my get together was only 20 people and he made it feel so special and easy. So, big or small event, Steven Segar is definitely the catering route you should go.

This event went off without a hitch. Mobile Caterer was on time, on point and on the ball for the entirety of the event. They rolled with the changes I had and made the event a complete success. The food was incredible. The set up was beautiful. They went above and beyond considering they had the best value of any of the caterers who responded to my project request. It was truly seamless and effortless.

ABSOLUTELY AMAZING!! I have hired other caterers in the past, but none of them come close the experience I had with Chef Lofthouse and his team. Chef Lofthouse created a spectacular menu and it was delicious to eat. He and his team took care of all of the planning and set-up for the event. They served perfectly on time, and gave me and my guests such great service, that my guests are still emailing me to get Chef Lofthouse's phone number. You are missing out if you don't have him cater your party!

I am thrilled to share with you my experience with Chef LaTay. First it must said, her food is AMAZING. In Jan 2015, I married the love of my life; I had a small backyard wedding of about 75 ppl total and Chef LaTay catered the food for my special day. We decided to go with Tri-Tip Roast, Fully loaded mashed potatoes, Green Beans, and Salad. Her food was a hit. Delicious and memorable. My guests were happily fed and pleased with every bite and so was I. In the past, Chef LaTay would do weekly orders every Friday and Saturdays where she would deliver her meals to those local near her. It was a huge meal that came with dessert and a drink, worth the price indeed. That’s where/when I would also have some of her other delicious foods. My personal favorites are her Macaroni and Cheese, her Salmon, her Enchiladas, her Chicken (every way she makes it), and her Oxtail. She also makes wonderful tasty desserts. Her cakes are all homemade and are to die for. I love her Chocolate cake and her frostings are the best! Better than any other cakes I’ve had. And I can’t forget the dessert my husband and I always ask for throughout the year, Banana Pudding! Again, AMAZING! It is an honor to have Chef LaTay’s food be a part of my life. Every delicious bite makes you wish there was no such thing as getting full. Having her for your events or for a small special occasion, you won’t be disappointed. Chef LaTay is very creative with her food and service. She comes with class and excellent customer service. She makes sure you get what you asked for; just very professional with a welcoming loving spirit. Chef LaTay It’s Made Devine is worth your time to try her food, because I guarantee you, you’ll be asking for more!

Provided Thanksgiving services for an intimate family gathering. Staff was professional and arrived on time. The food arrived hot and ready to eat. The turkey was extremely tender and flavorful. They offer large portion sizes, we had so much leftovers for black Friday. We will definitely use La Perry Catering in the future.

John and his team were fantastic! They were extremely willing to work with our budget, and the foot was wonderful. It was all locally grown, fresh ingredients that made for a healthy Italian lunch for our event. His team even arranged for the linen rental, picked it up and returned it at no extra cost to us. Furthermore, John took the time to scope out the venue for our conference ahead of time to make sure all would go smoothly the day of. Definitely will be using them again in the future and highly recommend them to anyone looking for five-star service and excellent food!

John and his amazing team are real miracle workers! Extremely professional from our first conversation through the entire event, John was a delight to work with. Reasonable prices, the food was great (I will definitely be visiting their restaurant), and completely self sufficient. I didn't have to worry about anything! Craftsman Catering barbecued on sight, providing a little entertainment and a few samples right off the grill for guests that wandered by. Not only were the main dishes phenomenal but I still have guests raving about the coleslaw and other sides! Thank you so much John & Craftsman team! I'll be seeing you soon!

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How do you find a good caterer?

Reviews, interviews and menu tastings will help you find the right catering choice for your big day. Start by screening possible wedding caterers based on past reviews. If a caterer you are interested in has a review that concerns you, ask them about it; how they respond will be very telling. Next, ask about their availability for your wedding date.

If the wedding caterer is available on your date, it’s time to talk about menus and prices. Be clear about what your maximum budget is find out what choices this will allow you. Caterers may custom-create a menu for your event, or they may have menu templates within different price ranges that can guide your decision. A clear budget gives the caterer clear parameters within which to work and offer creative suggestions. Schedule a menu tasting to confirm you love your wedding menu. Once you have a menu and date, and have paid a deposit to reserve the caterer’s services, confirm additional details including when the food will be delivered to the site, what kind of service will be provided, how many servers will be onsite and for how long, and who is responsible for setup and cleanup. The more specific your contract, the fewer worries you’ll have on your wedding day. Get more smart hiring tips here.

How much does wedding catering cost per person?

Wedding catering costs will always vary based on the number of guests you’re inviting, the menu you want to serve, and the way the food will be served to your guests. As you interview wedding catering companies, you’ll be presented with a cost per person for various menus. On the low end, wedding catering may cost approximately $15-$18 per person. This would include prepared food only, with no setup or service of any kind. The starting price for a simple buffet meal with minimal service typically averages $22 per person. Opting for the same menu with all organic ingredients could raise your costs to about $33 per person. A moderately upscale menu (finer ingredients, more elaborate presentation) could range from $24 to $34 per person. High-end wedding catering cost truly has no limit. Lobster, filet mignon, specialty seafood, organic ingredients — menu choices like these can boost your cost per person up to $150 and more.

What should you look for in a caterer?

A delicious meal is a critical element of a successful wedding, with happy guests fondly remembering your fabulous wedding food. The right caterer for you will be:

  • Available: Even the best caterer is no good if they aren’t available on your wedding date. Ask early before you get your heart set on someone.
  • Affordable for you: Find a caterer that you can afford. Having a spending plan ahead of time will mean you won’t overspend on food.
  • A good personality fit: Wedding planning is stressful, so work with someone that you can get along with and communicate with easily.
  • Experienced and recommended: Ensure the company has a proven track record with events of your size and the references to back it up.
  • Transparent about money: Steer clear of shady pricing. Find a caterer who is very clear about costs and is happy to talk you through budgets and pricing options.
  • Transparent about food: Find someone who is clear about where they source their food from and where it is prepared.

How much should catering cost for a wedding?

The cost of wedding catering will reflect the level of service, the menu you choose, the luxury you desire and the number of guests you invite. Where you live also plays a major role in your wedding catering costs. The regional cost to do business and local cost of food will affect your catering bill. There is no set price for wedding catering, because each wedding and each menu is different. This is why many caterers provide a per-person price. This allows you to break down what it costs to feed each person based on the menu you want. Working with your caterer, you can adjust menu items, service level and more to accommodate your budget and guest count. Keep in mind that wedding catering costs are not just for the food. The bill reflects all the components that go into commercial food catering: a commercial kitchen, ingredients, staff, insurance, marketing and more. Here are some examples of average costs:

  • Three-course plated meal, moderately upscale, for 125 in Los Angeles: $14,000. Because of staffing costs, a true plated meal costs about twice as much as a staff-assisted buffet.
  • Buffet meal, standard menu, for 100 in Los Angeles: $5,000.
  • Per-person cost for hors d'oeuvres, dinner and nonalcoholic beverages: $24–$37, depending on menu selection, in Southern California.
  • Drop off prepared food for 50: $1,000 in North Carolina. Price does not include any service, setup or breakdown.

How do you serve food at a wedding?

Food service at your wedding will affect your catering costs and influence the atmosphere of the reception. Buffet style is more informal; plated meals are a bit fancier; family style encourages sharing. Read about the different food service styles to select your preferred wedding catering choice.

  • Buffet: Caterers can drop off prepared foods for a DIY and budget-friendly buffet option where you set everything up and food is entirely self-service. For a fuller-service buffet, the caterers set up food, oversee the buffet throughout the event, and clean up afterwards. For food only, prices per person might average $16-$18, while a service buffet may start around $20-$22 per person. Adding food stations can increase per-person costs by at least $3-$5.
  • Family style: Servers bring large platters of food to guest tables in courses. It’s less formal (and less expensive) than a plated meal, but more formal and higher-cost than a buffet. You’ll need large tables to accommodate the platters, so plan accordingly when renting furniture for the event.
  • Plated: A plated event is a formal dining experience; waitstaff serve your seated guests for each course, fill their drinks, and attend to them throughout the dinner. A plated dinner is typically the most expensive option for both food and service.
  • Food trucks: Similar to buffets, with food trucks your guests get their own food and bring it to their table. A food truck gives a relaxed and playful vibe to your reception.
  • Cocktail reception: If you don’t want a formal seated dinner, you can opt for a wide assortment of passed appetizers at an extended cocktail hour reception.
