I reached out to Dr. Lake originally to find a way to get my sister and my mother talking again after a 4 year dispute. We all met together and Dr. Lake was able to pin point out some of their major issues and get them to agree to stop talking baldy about each other. As I sat listening, I discovered there were things that I needed help with personally to get my life back on track and to be a positive role model to my two girls. I went back a second time by myself and I left feeling like I had a complete mental and emotional massage. I felt like I was able to see my life in a new perspective that would allow me to worry less, be less stressed out all the time, and focus on the relationships that mean the most: with my husband and my children. I plan on returning a few more times to continue to learn how to become a better person and grow stronger mentally so I can be more stable with my kids. I would highly recommend Dr. Lake’s services to anyone who may be dealing with any sort of personal issues, some that you may not even be fully aware of, to get your life in check and be a better person for yourself and your family.

I was blown away by Liza's Ignite Your Energy Program. We did the sessions on Skype, and Liza has a gift; she honed in on me and brought forth ways to rev up my energy. My health and nutrition is good, and she showed me some powerful ways to make it better – ways that have made a noticeable difference over the past two months. I also had Liza do some of her Neuro-Linguistic Programming (NLP) magic with me. I’m an NLP practitioner myself, and appreciate having a good NLP session to break through those emotional blocks we all have, which stand in the way of us giving and getting the best in our lives. Liza helps me get re-inspired about my life again, which keeps me living it in a more positive and meaningful way, so I can have more fun. I recommend Liza to anyone who wants to feel better in their skin! I recommend that you check her out!

I took my first yoga class taught by Rebecca almost 2 years ago and have been religiously attending ever since. Rebecca is one of the most naturally gifted teachers that I've ever met in any profession. She has the uncanny ability to provide individualized instructions catered to the specific needs of each student while maintaining a focused goal and constructing a nurturing and playful environment for the group as a whole. Incorporating the mastery of her own physical practice with spiritual, philosophical, and physiological knowledge she's helped my grow physically and mentally beyond what I thought I was capable off. So don't think twice....highly recommended!

In 2012 I went through a nasty breakup and fell into a horrible depression. I literally felt as if I was losing my mind. I was sad, depressed and anxious all the time. My inner dialogue was so bad that I felt worthless and damaged. Because I was so depressed and anxious all the time my relationship with my son (who was 10 years old at the time) was suffering badly. My son who has an ADHD diagnosis was also having terrible problems at school with bullying (being bullied and sometimes being the bully) and his self-esteem was very low. I am a recovering drug addict. I have been clean 10 years, but at that time, I felt that I needed to reach out for professional help before I went into relapse mode. At first, I was seeing a therapist that never said a word to me during our sessions. She was a great listener, but she never really gave me any insight into anything I said to her. I always left those sessions feeling upset and confused. I felt I had gained no greater understanding of myself than I did when I first walked into her office. I also felt that this therapist couldn’t really connect with my son. That is when I began looking for a new therapist and I found Patrick on Psychology Today. After seeing Patrick for the first time it was a totally different experience. He listened intently, but he wasn’t just listening, he was actually “hearing” what I was saying. He has such a subtle yet, very effective way, of helping me look at the things I was thinking and saying in a way I had never done before. During some of our sessions, I have felt the lightbulb go off in my head; I’ve had revelations about myself and the things that have happened in my life. I finally found someone to understand me, but also help me to understand me, and accept me, in a gentle, non-judgmental or threatening way. After several meetings with Patrick my harsh, inner critic, was almost made silent and even though it rears its head every so often, I have learned to be kind to myself, to accept myself, flaws and all. Patrick has an amazing memory. He seems to remember lots of the little details from the things I’ve shared with him in previous sessions, which makes me feel important during our time together. Patrick is wonderful with my son who is now 12. Patrick is a safe place for my son to unload all the things that are bothering him. Now that my son is a pre-teen I feel that it is more important than ever to have someone he can bounce his feelings off of and get positive, supportive feedback. Whenever my son, is having an emotional time at school or with friends, he looks forward to the visits he has with Patrick and afterwards I notice that my son is willing to be more open with me about what is going on in his life without me having to pry. I still have a long way to go in my journey of self-discovery but I can say that I now feel hopeful about my future. My outlook on life, myself and my relationships have improved so much that I am in awe of the mental and spiritual growth I have achieved in such little time. If you are thinking about reaching out to a therapist I would highly recommend that you contact Patrick Cleveland. You won’t regret it.

About a year ago, after a myriad of programs, meal plans, and diets, I decided I needed to make a dramatic change in my life. I was scared to work with a "health professional" because I had been to them in the past and felt dismissed and unheard. Gun shy as I was, I was determined to make a change and knew I needed help. I am so grateful to the universe for sending Oliva to me. For the first time ever I felt listened to. I wasn't "in trouble" if I ate something "wrong." I was given concrete and realistic steps to build a healthier lifestyle and saw immediate and tangible improvement in my life -- including but not limited to my digestion, skin (I've always had acne), weight, and overall happiness. She LISTENS, she CARES, and she is EXTREMELY knowledgeable. I cannot emphasize enough how incredible my experience with Olivia has been. Where historically I dreaded check-ins and calls with health professionals, I genuinely look forward to speaking with Olivia -- to discuss my successes, my good days and bad. I unequivocally recommend Olivia as a dynamite professional and stellar human being.

Leeanne is the most awesome Practioner I have ever worked with, I saw her for brain mapping and neuro feedback at Sovereign Health, but she always gave much more than that in her caring, compassionate, and insightful response to my questions about my mental illness. I've never had a therapist who was so well informed, with so much scientific data to back up her work and recommendation. not only did she help me she read me like a book without judgement, and made me feel loved , lovable, and set me on the right path to recovery with her recommendations. I will forever be grateful for having known her and being one of her clients.

I was robbed at gunpoint at my place of employment, and was diagnosed with Post Traumatic Stress Disorder. I was fortunate enough to be guided to Sage Dakota at Family Therapy 911. Sage helped me begin the process of healing from PTSD. She listened patiently without interrupting, asked pertinent and important questions, and gave me sound grounding techniques and advice. She gently and effectively helped me move through the trauma that I faced, and gave me effective tools for dealing with all the past traumas that made the PTSD so much worse. When I swore that I was going crazy from the horrific incident of having a gun pointed at my head, she assured me that I was NOT was the trauma, and not me. That was so important for me to hear, and I am grateful to have my mental health back in excellent shape. I would recommend Sage to anyone dealing with a traumatic issue. She understands distress, is non judgmental, and has a truly genuine and caring spirit.

        Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What are the types of psychologists?

Psychologists are healthcare professionals who use scientific methods to understand the relationships between the brain, environment and behavior. Psychologists may focus on research — studying how the brain and various environments drive behaviors to better understand the issues that trouble patients and society as a whole — or they may focus on practice — interacting with people using therapeutic methods. The American Psychological Association shares some of the more prevalent types of psychologists:

        • Clinical psychologists assess and treat mental, emotional and behavioral disorders.
        • Cognitive and perceptual psychologists study human perception, thinking and memory.
        • Community psychologists work to strengthen the abilities of communities, settings, organizations and broader social systems to meet people’s needs — such as improving support for victims of natural disasters, or working to improve health policies.
        • Counseling psychologists help people understand and take action on everyday issues, career and work problems, and serious adversity.
        • Developmental psychologists study the psychological development of the human being throughout life.
        • Educational psychologists concentrate on how effective teaching and learning take place.
        • Engineering psychologists conduct research on how people work best with machines.
        • Environmental psychologists study the dynamics of how people interact with their environments.
        • Evolutionary psychologists study how evolutionary principles such as mutation, adaptation and selective fitness influence human thought, feeling and behavior.
        • Experimental psychologists study cognitive processes, comparative psychology (cross-species comparisons), and learning and conditioning.
        • Forensic psychologists apply psychological principles to legal issues.
        • Health psychologists specialize in how biological, psychological and social factors affect health and illness.
        • Industrial/organizational psychologists apply psychological principles and research methods to the workplace to improve productivity, health and the quality of work life.
        • Neuropsychologists and behavioral neuropsychologists explore the relationships between brain systems and behavior.
        • Quantitative and measurement psychologists focus on methods and techniques for designing experiments and analyzing psychological data.
        • Rehabilitation psychologists work with stroke and accident victims, people with mental disabilities, and those with developmental disabilities caused by such conditions as cerebral palsy, epilepsy and autism.
        • School psychologists assess and counsel students, consult with parents and school staff, and conduct behavioral interventions when appropriate.
        • Social psychologists study how a person’s mental life and behavior are shaped by interactions with other people.
        • Sport psychologists help athletes refine their focus on competition goals, become more motivated, and learn to deal with anxiety and fear of failure around competition.

        What is a psychologist?

A psychologist is a professionally trained mental health professional who helps patients navigate challenging life situations or mental health issues. To become a psychologist you must earn a doctoral degree; qualifying degrees include a Ph.D., Psy.D. or Ed.D. To actively practice, a psychologist must be licensed in their state and maintain good standing. Psychologists are trained to administer tests that can evaluate a patient’s cognitive strength and weaknesses, intellectual skills, vocational aptitude and preference, personality characteristics, and neuropsychological functioning, explains the American Psychological Association (APA).

A psychologist meets with patients in an office and may work with a variety of methods, depending on patient need, such as cognitive, behavioral or interpersonal.  According to the APA, common reasons a person may visit a psychologist include:

        • Dealing with depression, anger or anxiety over a long period of time.
        • Help with a chronic condition that is interfering with their lives or physical health.
        • Help with grieving and other abrupt transitions.
        • Overcoming addictions.
        • Managing chronic illness.
        • Breaking old and harmful patterns of thinking or behavior.

Can a clinical psychologist write prescriptions?

To be able to write a prescription, a clinical psychologist must practice in a state that permits them to do so, and must either have a master’s degree in psychopharmacology or have completed the required advanced training program. According to the American Psychological Association (APA), five states currently permit psychologists to write prescriptions: Idaho, New Mexico, Illinois, Iowa and Louisiana. Many psychologists who are not able to write prescriptions work in partnership with psychiatrists, pediatricians or primary care doctors to help their patients who need medication.

        How much do therapists cost?

If you are experiencing a challenging time, have mental health difficulties, or just want professional guidance as you move through life, a therapist can provide relief, tools and structure. The national average cost for a therapist is $80-$100 per hour, although prices may be higher or lower depending on geographic location and the experience and training of the therapist.

Psychiatrists, psychologists and licensed therapists are all health professionals who offer various modalities of therapy. Ask questions about the type of therapy they specialize in (such as cognitive or behavioral, etc.) and their area of expertise (such as grief, anxiety, body image disorders, etc.) to help you find the right fit for your needs. Therapy sessions are typically 50-60 minutes long.  The patient usually meets with the therapist in their office; sessions may also be held remotely (via Skype, etc.) or in a clinical setting. Psychologists, psychiatrists and other therapists who have earned advanced degrees will typically charge higher rates than other licensed therapists. Depending on your diagnosis, your health insurance may cover your therapy costs.

Hire skilled professionals for absolutely everything.
