Sheila sent Ashley upon my request for only one worker, rather than two. Ashley is a lovely young woman who worked very hard and steadily. She was on her hands and knees cleaning baseboards thoroughly. She got all the muck off the glass shower doors, a real feat. My only complaint is that Sheila doesn't send a vacuum cleaner with her crew and all I own is a dust buster type, not strong enough to do a good cleaning. The fee was reasonable and payment wasn't expected until I was completely satisfied with the work. An electronic receipt was sent immediately.

Judah Carruth provides fantastic, professional, friendly, fast and efficient service. He was always at my house when he said he would be. I really appreciate the fact that he scheduled the projects around my work hours, so that I didn't have to take very much time off. He was respectful and cleaned up after finishing the work. He doesn't accept payment until the project is completed to your satisfaction. I had one large project and several small projects done. He built new stairs for my deck, fixed a ceiling and some leaking windows. He did an awesome job. I can't say enough good things. I will definitely hire him in the future if anything else need to be fixed.

Teresa came early and stayed late until the job was done. She worked fast and deep cleaned kitchen, 2 bathrooms, inside windows and shutters, swept walls from dust from new flooring, cleaned new floors, refrigerator and oven. She even cleaned the outdoor grill. Everything looks beautiful.

I hired John to assemble two IKEA media cabinets, complete with glass doors and drawers. He arrived on time, came completely prepared with everything he needed, jumped right into the job and got it handled no problem. He explained a couple things to me along the way, finished up and didn't even leave me a mess. He clearly knew what he was doing, it was well worth the fee and I would be happy to hire him next time I need something like this done.

Todd and his mentor repaired a 7'x9' multi-paned window from the 1930s that is the nicest most noticeable feature on my home from the street. It was dry rotted so badly that there was a hole big enough for mice to come through. Todd took the window to his mentor's woodshop and together they rebuilt the window with beautiful joinery, removing all the weak rotted parts and replacing with new wood. He then reinstalled the window and used Bondo to completely rebuild the sill (which was also largely dry rotted). The repair is solid and beautifully done. He also was super pleasant to have around, professional in every way, cleaned up every time after his work, and I'm 100% happy. It's way preferable to me to rebuild a beautiful old window rather than buy a new one. He did so affordably (about 1/4 the cost if I had had to buy a brand new window). Thanks, Todd! I totally recommend him to anyone needing this kind of work.

Kerri and her team did a great job. There were some pretty tough stains to get out on the glass shower stall and on the walls and she did her best to get those out. Even when a glass pane was broken out on the chandelier, she gave us her card for reimbursement. The landlord didn't charge us for it so we left it as it. I would use Kerri again for our new house.

Steve did a fantastic job on making a cabinet for us, he also installed 2 'floating' shelves per our request for shelves and installed a bathroom medicine cabinet. There was a mirror where the medicine cabinet would be going and he took his time taking it off so there wouldn't be glass every where. someone had glued it on! Everything was very well done. He will be the one we will call if we need more work done in the future. Thanks Steve, we both appreciate the job you did, thank you!

Gennadiy installed siding for me outside a remodeled bathroom. I had the old fashioned redwood materials custom ordered from a mill, but installing them was a somewhat complex job that I didn't feel comfortable tackling. Gennadiy installed all the materials perfectly, including the window and corner trim pieces. Everything was installed straight and tight, with primer on both sides, so I think this job is going to last many decades. Thanks for the great work, Gennadiy!

I highly recommend Rough Country Renovations. I had gutters cleaned, gutter guards installed, and downspouts replaced. I was provided with a clear and easy to understand invoice. The pricing was great. The work was done in a timely and professional manner. Jan was very responsive in meeting my needs and answering all my questions. I will use the services of this company again for future projects.

USA Replacement Auto Glass went above and beyond. The day I contacted them they were out to measure and give me an exact quote. I had them rush it and had my window replaced in 48 hrs. I will be using them for all of my glass needs. I scheduled their shop to replace a windshield on my new Audi A4 and were three hundred dollars cheaper then Safelite. They are family owned and although I hope to not have more glass issues they will have my business and all of my family and friends. Thank you USA

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How do you replace a window?

You may want to replace a window if the glass has been damaged, you’re remodeling a room, or you want to upgrade your energy efficiency as well as your style by getting rid of those drafty single panes that are losing you money. When replacing a window, you can remove and replace the entire window down to the house frame. This method is best if the existing frame is damaged or deteriorating, but requires construction skills and know-how and will take more time and money. An easier and less expensive option is to install an insert replacement window into the existing frame. Insert replacements are only an option if your window frame is in good condition without rot or damage.

When replacing an entire window, first you’ll carefully remove the existing window with a pry bar and other tools. Next, you’ll make any repairs and adjustments needed to the existing frame or header and studs to ensure that the space is perfectly plumb and square, so the new window will sit perfectly within the space. Next, install the new window from the exterior, securing it into place. You’ll need to precisely wrap and insulate the window to ensure it doesn’t leak. Then, install the interior casing and exterior trim (as needed). If you prefer to hire a professional to install a window, consider replacing more than one window at a time, as the pro can work more efficiently.

How much is a custom window?

Choosing custom windows will increase your window installation cost but will provide you with exactly what you want. The average national cost for window installation is $2,650. Your custom window costs will vary based on several factors. The first factor is the type of frame you want. The four most common types of frames are vinyl, fiberglass, aluminum and wood. Wood is typically the most expensive option, followed by aluminum. The type of glass you select will also affect cost. There are single-, double- and triple-pane windows. Most double- and triple-pane windows have gas sealed between the panes that act as insulation. Windows typically cost more the more energy-efficient they are, though this efficiency can save you money on utility bills in the long run. The type of glass used can also affect cost. There are different grades of glass — high-performance glass, low-e coated glass, and more — which all provide you with better insulation. In addition, the number of unified inches (window height x window width) you need will affect cost. The cost of custom windows will also be affected by installation cost and whether any repair or construction work is required to properly fit the new window.

How much would it cost to put in new windows?

The cost to replace a window can vary depending on factors such as window size, type of glass, brand of window, necessary trim repair, and any construction work required for installation. Labor rates and cost to do business in your region will also affect the cost. The national average window installation cost is $2,650 per project. Here are some examples of average trim repair and window replacement costs:

  • Trim repair:
    • Line and case a window frame with an MDF product: $400.
    • Line and case a window frame with raw hemlock wood: $500.
  • Approximate cost to install five windows at one time: $3,000.
  • Approximate cost to install one double-hung, energy-efficient 3-foot by 4-foot window: $500-$550.
    • For the same window size (3-foot by 4-foot) from a different manufacturer made with a specialty fiberglass exterior and all-wood interior, the cost could go up to $1,500.
    • Pricing can go as high as $5,000 for a bay or bow window with specialty glass and framing.
      • These examples include removal and disposal of old materials and window.
