Brandon the owner was terrific to deal with and the team he sent for my move, David and Kevin, were exceptional at getting my move completed. They were going to be 4 mins late and called to let me know. They never stopped working. Never got on their phones. They were incredibly careful, professional and pleasant. And worked through a thunderstorm and a power outage. And never complained. I would definitely recommend Safe Moving. The staff, movers, equipment and services were top notch. Great experience. Great company. Thank you.

Outstanding! I've moved a lot, and this was the best experience I have ever had. Changed the move date and truck size with no problem. Movers were very efficient and fast, and very kind about me deciding were to place a large piece of furniture. Thank you for making my move less stressful.

I think that they are priced fairly...The movers were not seasoned professionals, but were polite and made sure to ask questions. I would recommend them if you don't have lots of money and want someone who will be straight forward about cost. In researching movers I found that many companies have hourly rates and then hidden fuel fees, drive time fees, fees to use furniture protection...I appreciated that the price quoted included everything. Alysha was very nice and also listened to my needs and budget. They are a smaller scale company, but was very nice and straightforward.

I would recommend City Wide Movers without reservation. They were very careful with my antiques and used all the precautions available - they brought plenty of moving blankets! I found them to be helpful, polite and hardworking. They made the move much easier and I appreciated their professionalism. They worked well as a team. I would not hesitate to use them again! Thank you Ben & Ruben!!!

Nick and his crew helped my girlfriend and I move out of our apartment on September of 2015. I would like to start off by saying they are absolutely amazing movers. They treat your stuff as if it was their own. My biggest fear of hiring movers was having my things damaged. I have nice things and I of course want them to stay that way. I am happy to say nothing was damaged or scratched. They work fast but, at the same time they are careful with your things. Another thing I enjoyed about Nick was anytime I had to contact Nick in regards to questions I had or updates about the move he would respond quickly and never had the feeling I was waiting on him. I would hire Nick and his crew again without hesitation. I feel bad that it took me this long to write a review because they definitely deserve the good credit and the 5 Stars. If you have any doubts, they will definitely go away after you see the way these guys work. Keep up the good work guys! I'll be contacting you soon.

I am sorry this is a late review. I moved in November 2014, and Jerome and the Old West Moving crew were the answer to my prayers. They arrived early, and immediately started moving my items (from a house to a smaller apartment upstairs). This was my first time using professional movers, so I was a little apprehensive. I was worried due to the amount of furniture I had, and the time it would take (to avoid getting rained on). Old West moved me and it started to sprinkle right after we were done. I have passed out their business cards to anyone looking for a professional mover, and if I ever need to move again, this will be the first place I call. Thank you Jerome and team!!!

Anytime movers were professional and a great value! I purchased a very large couch and love seat. Getting them into my house was challenging as my doorways are narrow. They were very patient and careful in getting my furniture placed safely into my home. They did clean up of the packaging. They went over and above most moving companies would. They are courteous professional and got the job done! You can't go wrong hiring this company!!!

The movers went to the wrong address and were 2 hours late to start. Afterwards I called James B. Moving about two items which I knew for a fact were not in any of my rooms at my new place, I was told that those items were placed in a section to go to the dump by accident and they would be returned to me. Now we have more missing boxes and I cannot get a return phone call and on the way to my new place I saw the movers pull off to the side of the freeway. Since there are no return calls I don’t know what to think except “ Be Extremely Careful who you hire” the references were vague at best.

0 friends 1 review 5.0 star rating 5/31/2016 I highly recommend Patrick and Above & Beyond. Tyrese and Jay were a super team!! I moved from a one bedroom to a smaller one bedroom in Davis. Patrick, Tyrese and Jay were very professional, extremely respectful of my precious pieces and worked efficiently while staying careful. I have never had movers that used so many pads, blankets, wraps and safety straps. I always appreciate a business that makes safety a priority for it's workers. My stuff was really taken care of in this way. Even though I was a tiny job, they all were very polite, well-organized and conscientious. Patrick is very responsive and also double-confirmed with me the night before and the day of my move. I would recommend A&B and these 3 gentlemen to ALL of my friends, family and neighbors. My peace of mind is priceless ;).

After another Craiglist mover had to cancel last minute due to family emergency, I called James literally 3 hours before the planned move and he arranged for 2 movers to meet me at my storage facility at the originally scheduled time. I was able to secure a truck and they did the driving for me (HUGE relief as I can't imaging myself driving a 20 ft truck)My move involved 3 stops, and the final destination was on the 2nd floor. The guys were great!! Done in 3 hours! Worked non-stop, were professional, efficient and personable. James himself was extremely responsive and reassuring during my initial stressful interaction and speaks with you after the move to ensure everything is to your satisfaction. I will definitely use them my next move!

Steve and his crew got the job done!! His 3 "J"s Jason, Jeremy and "Jazz" is the best movers I ever had and I have used all of the van lines (I'm not gone say no names though!) Jason loaded my property perfect and there was NOT a scratch on anything, Jeremy is short but strong as a bull and "Jazz"(which is his birth name) running up and down my steps with boxes on his back, he made the move fun and comfortable, plus he's good on the eyes!!! But they was very good and I will refer them to everybody moving, you won't be disappointed. Thanks Steve!

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What do moving companies do?

Moving companies provide a range of services to help you physically move out of one residence and move into a new place. But moving companies can do so much more than just haul your belongings across town in a truck. The national average for moving company prices ($250-$350 per hour) reflects the range of services provided. Here are examples of all the ways moving companies can help:

  • Packing: Moving companies can pack your belongings for you. They typically charge a flat rate for both the box and the labor to pack the box. The more time-consuming the belongings are to pack, the higher the cost per box. For example, books could be $5 per box, linens $10 per box, and fine china and glassware $18 per box.
  • Specialty moving: Safely move a baby grand piano, a oversize aquarium, or other specialty items with the help of pro movers.
  • Storage: Many moving companies can store your belongings while you wait for a new home to be remodeled or closing of your new home to be finalized. If you’re moving long-distance, they often provide short-term storage free for a specific length of time, and a set rate after that (such as $60 per square cubic foot of storage space used).
  • Long-distance moves: No need to rent a trailer and move your things; a long-distance moving company can haul your belongings across the country for you. Typically they charge by the cubic foot for moves, with prices based on your destination.
  • Unpacking: Moving companies can even unpack your belongings for you after they have moved them. This is not as common, and will definitely increase the price, but can be helpful if you’re not able to tackle this task yourself.

How much does a moving company charge per hour?

When you’re ready to make a major move, it’s time to research moving companies’ prices. A moving company may charge on average anywhere between $25 and $100 per hour, per worker, for moving services. The price will vary with regional labor rates, local cost to do business, and the level of service the movers are providing. Nationally, the average hourly rate for a moving company is $250-$350 per hour. This price includes a range of pricing, from all-in service with four or more movers on site to standard hourly rates for one or two movers. Other factors that affect moving companies’ prices are packing, stairs (or elevators), and distance. For a full-service move, you pay movers to pack your belongings for you. You may pay for the cost of the moving boxes and an hourly rate per worker, and there may be additional charges for packing fragile items. Stairs will also add to your moving prices. Lifting and carrying boxes and furniture up and down stairs takes more time and creates more physical labor for the workers. Moving companies may charge flat rates for flights of stairs, such as $50-$70 per flight. A moving company may also charge a one-time fee for moving things via elevator, such as $75-$100. If parking is not accessible in front of your home or apartment building, there may also be an additional fee for the added distance to carry your belongings to the truck.

How much should you tip furniture movers?

Moving furniture is hard work and potentially dangerous unless you’re properly equipped. For anyone not ready to handle their heavy oak armoire alone, professional furniture movers can safely and efficiently move your items to another room in your house or across town as needed. The national average cost to hire heavy furniture movers is $150-$200 per hour. This rate could include multiple furniture movers working as a team to move items such as beds, armoires, billiards tables, pianos, shelves, tables, entertainment centers and more. Hourly rates can vary by region. If your furniture movers have arrived on time, done a great job, kept your home and belongings protected from scratches and dings, and completed the move as planned, a tip will be greatly appreciated. Moving companies suggest approximately 10 percent of the total bill as gratuity for those doing local moving jobs, which is also a good guideline for tipping heavy furniture movers. If the total bill for heavy moving was $100 and two workers were onsite, consider giving them $10 total, or $5 each for a job well done.

How much does it cost for long-distance movers?

Long-distance movers transport your belongings across the country for you. No more renting a trailer and road-tripping from state to state with your entire house hitched to your bumper. Long-distance movers make the move happen so you can fly to your new home, suitcase in hand, and wait for your furniture to arrive. Nationally, the average price range for long-distance movers is $1,490-$2,230. The distance you are moving and the number of cubic feet the movers have to transport will both affect cost. Another factor in long-distance moving costs is whether you choose to pay for an exclusive move or a consolidated move.

In an exclusive move, which is more expensive, your belongings are the only cargo on the moving truck. The movers travel directly to your new house and deliver your belongings on a scheduled day. A consolidated move is more affordable because the movers transport your belongings along with those of other people, saving them time and gas — which means you save money. The downside is that your belongings typically arrive with a two-week delivery window rather than on a prescheduled day. Read reviews to make sure you can trust the company with your possessions to ensure a peaceful moving process.

How much does it cost to move a one-bedroom apartment across the country?

Professional movers can handle the hard work of moving your one-bedroom apartment across the country for you. You can determine what your move will cost by learning the rate your movers charge per cubic foot and how they factor distance into the total cost. Cross-country movers typically charge based on your belongings rather than apartment size because that determines how much work they will have to do. For example, a studio apartment that is crammed full of things will take more work and moving truck space than the contents of a three-bedroom apartment with very little furniture.

Cross-country movers may also have varying rates, depending on where in the country you are moving. For example, a company may charge $5 per cubic foot for consolidated moves along the East Coast and $6 per cubic foot for consolidated moves from the East Coast to the central states or the West Coast. A one-bedroom apartment costs approximately $1,500 to move across the country.

Hi, Could anyone please send me a formal offer for moving. I am moving from Davis, CA to San Mateo, CA. The details are given below: Moving date: February 2nd, 2013 (Saturday) Source Apartment: Address: Orchard Park Cir, Davis CA 95616 Floor: 2nd Floor Bedroom: 1 bedroom (out of 2 bedrooms; my roommate is not moving), 600 square feet. Major items: 1 queen bed and 1 couch, a 32" LCD TV (very light weight), TV Stand, Coffee table, Kitchen utensils, small items such as suitcase full of clothes, space heater, fan, laundry basket etc. Destination Apartment Address: South Norfolk Street, San Mateo, CA 94403 Floor: 3rd Floor (Elevator available, not sure whether big items would fit inside the elevator) Bedroom: 1 bedroom (600 Square foot) In both source and destination apartments the rental truck can be parked very close to the apartment. I would prefer no surprise, and I don't want to pay more than $600 everything inclusive. It would be better for me to dump everything and buy new if the cost exceeds $600. Please factor in drive time, fuel cost, any surcharge, or other possible costs before quoting. Anyone can get estimated drive time from google maps. But, I am not responsible for longer drive time or traffic. I want to keep the cost at or under $600. I really appreciate the time and attention in this regard. I look forward to hearing back from anyone soon. Thanks and Best Regards,

I'm moving out of a studio apartment; mostly I'm moving a bed, couch, coffee table, books and electronics. I'd like the movers to take apart my Ikea bed and reassemble it at the destination, but otherwise I'll do assembly myself. The building I'm moving out of has an elevator, but the new building doesn't, and the new apartment is up two flights of stairs.
