My driveway was very greasy. He warned me that he probably couldn't get all the stains out, and it was true, but he worked incredibly hard at it. He also washed my front porch and the sidewalk without my asking him to! If I hadn't moved away from the area, I'd definitely use him again. Highly recommended!

Steve was awesome. First of all, he came right over....the other quote I had said they couldn't make it till the rain stopped, Sunday or Monday.😳 The porch light is not directly in the rain, it's under a overhang. Steve figured out the problem within minutes, told me what was needed, asked what I wanted, then went to Home Depot and bought everything. He picked out the perfect light and had it installed in minutes. His rates were the same as others, but his willingness to come out in the rain spoke volumes about his character. If I need another project done, I will definitely call Steve.. 😁

We would highly recommend Kevin and Kenny for any job. We hired Kevin to do several jobs for us and his workmanship is outstanding and the quality is perfect. He is honest, provides estimates in writing and is punctual at work. He has done everything from repairs in our house to concrete work, tearing down and building a new wood pool shed, a brand new shed on the side of our house, a total remodel in our garage and converted it to a train hobby room including enclosure of the attic, building cabinets and the layout, painting, and laying carpet. His most recent job was repairing some dry rot outside of our home by laying brick around the entire garage and on the porch. We couldn't be happier with how everything turned out. Kevin and Kenny do fantastic work, are professional, friendly, and you won't be disappointed!

My mom had a stroke and I had one week to get a ramp built from her driveway to her front porch before she was released from the hospital and coming home in a wheelchair. It was done in 4 days and looks so much better than it did before. Ben even came out and secured the arbor over the path after he finished. There wasn't a scrap left in the yard, and he was much more reasonable that the other bids I received. Thanks for doing such a great job when I was in such need!

We have had several projects in the last eighteen months: Rebuilt front porch because of dry-rot; replaced double front entry doors and painted them; installed two custom built handrails; installed new back door, weatherproofed all windows; refurbished a bathroom - new sink and vanity top, new shower doors, new toilet, new light fixture, new floor and final painting. All projects completed in a timely manner and to our satisfaction. An easy going guy, friendly and honest and always ready to give constructive suggestions.

Tim is an excellent handyman! I’ve hired Tim to replace a front porch, he helped me with home improvements on many occasions and he has also given me sound advice as to how to find people where that was not his expertise. He is professional, personable and a hard worker.

Chris did a great job. He was on time. He is a very hard worker. I needed new railings for my porch and I wanted tile laid on my porch, also. Chris gave me options of how the job could be done. He went with me to Home depot and Lowes to pick out the materials that I wanted used and purchase them myself. I really appreciated that. He is very meticulous and precise with his work. He did extra work that he thought would make it look better. I am so proud of the work he did. He has such a great personality. Yes, by all means I will be having him do more work for me and recommend him to other people. His price for the jobs were very reasonable. Thanks Chris.

Joshua Franklin has done a variety of work on my house and rental. He does plumbing and electrical but excels at construction. He started at my place with erecting a split-rail fence. He then built a beautiful redwood pergola and put up new metal fencing in the front of the house. In quite an intricate job, he enclosed my front porch renewing windows, doors and siding along the front of the house. Joshua has an analytical mind and can come up with a number of ways to complete a project. He is also a perfectionist and wants things to be done correctly. He is my go to person for the majority of my projects!

    Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

Who is a carpenter and what do they do?

Carpenters are skilled craftsmen who build things out of wood. Depending on what the carpenter builds, they may be referred to by various names. A framer is a carpenter who puts up the framing on a house. A trim or finish carpenter installs the finishing touches of prefabricated or custom trim and detail work once a house has been built and the walls are up. A furniture maker or woodworker builds furniture — such as tables, beds and dressers — out of wood. A cabinetmaker is a carpenter who builds custom and semi-custom wood cabinets. If you’re having a home built or remodeled, your general contractor will either provide or subcontract the carpentry work for the framing, cabinets and trim. You can hire a carpenter directly to update the trim in your home, build you a piece of custom furniture, or repair or replace your wood cabinets.

    Do carpenters build houses?

Carpenters are trained to work with wood. That means that any part of your home that is built of wood is very likely to involve a carpenter. Framing carpenters will put up the wood that makes up the bones of your home. If you’re having a wood floor installed, it may be done by a carpenter — although being a carpenter is not a requirement to install flooring. Trim, baseboards, wainscoting and any other detail work is typically installed by a finish carpenter. The wood boxes of custom cabinets will be built and installed by a carpenter.

Although all of these components in your new or remodeled home are built by carpenters who specialize in building things with wood, a general contractor typically oversees construction of the entire house. If the general contractor is also a carpenter skilled in all these areas, they may well construct your entire home. More often, the general contractor subcontracts out the various building stages to different individuals, including carpenters.
