What is a boot camp class?

Fitness boot camps are a heart-pounding way to boost your fitness level. Boot camps are led by a fitness instructor and are based on the concept of military boot camps — intensive workout programs to get new recruits into shape, quickly. Fitness boot camps encourage camaraderie, and the group momentum helps participants get through fast-paced intervals of cardio, isometric training, strength training and endurance drills. Classes may range anywhere from 30 to 60 minutes, and usually meet multiple days per week. Boot camps often run a specific duration of time, say four to six weeks, which creates a team-like environment for class members. Other boot camps run year-round and students purchase package pricing for classes, similar to subscriptions that allow them a set amount of classes per week or per month.

Boot camps can be held indoors at a gym, outdoors in a park or on a beach, in a backyard — anywhere there’s room for running, jumping and sweating. Some instructors also provide DVD and online boot camps. You can also find boot camps tailored to your heart’s desire, such as bikini boot camp, or boot camps for new mothers. Boot camps offer an intense workout and are usually led by energetic instructors pushing you to do your best, but unlike military boot camp drill sergeants, fitness boot camp instructors typically don’t use intimidation or punishment to spur you on. Check with your doctor before starting a boot camp if you have health concerns, and always let your instructor know ahead of time if you have injuries.

How much is a boot camp?

The cost of fitness boot camps depends on how often you go, the package you are purchasing (or if you are paying a drop-in fee), the location of the bootcamp, the equipment the instructors provide, and the background and reputation of the instructor. Smaller towns and areas with a lower cost of living typically have lower rates for boot camp services than big cities and regions with a higher cost of living. If you’re paying per class on a drop-in basis, expect to pay anywhere from $12 to $25 or more, depending on the region and the instructor. When you purchase a package of classes, typically the more you buy at one time, the cheaper each class is. The same boot camp class might be $20 for a drop-in student, $15 for a student who pays for 10 classes per month, and $10 for a student who pays for 30 classes a month. Studio space can also affect costs, so if your boot camp takes place in a high-end gym with top-of-the-line equipment, the prices will likely be higher than a class that meets in an outdoor space with limited or no equipment. Shop around to find the right type of boot camp class and the right instructor for you.

Fred is a wonderful trainer who pushes you throughout the workout session. He incorporates a variety of exercises into each session, which keeps me on my toes. He makes me want to push myself even more. I enjoying working out at the Elk Grove Self Made Training Facility where he trains me. The facility is very clean, has great equipment and the people are wonderful.

I am grateful to Arielle Crowder for helping my 92 year old father keep up his strength. She recognized his needs immediately and created a plan to achieve his goals. Dad enjoys being challenged and encouraged by Arielle, his personal trainer. I also look forward to her sessions as I know the extra time spent on walking and exercising is highly beneficial physically and cognitively. She is excellent!

Bree is an awesome trainer! She makes workouts fun and challenging, and she tailors them if you have certain issues you need to work on. I have weak ankles and a tight left shoulder but want to build upper body strength, and Bree makes sure to put in ankle strengthening circuits and to alter arm exercises to avoid further shoulder irritation. I love her positivity and she makes working out hard AND fun! I highly recommend her.

I worked with Chris for several months. My goals were to loose weight and work on toning my body the proper way. This was my first time working with a personal trainer and I was quite skeptical but upon meeting Chris my hesitations and fears automatically ceased to exist. Not only is Chris a true professional but he provides a non-judgmental and beyond comfortable exercising environment. Working with Chris exposed me to the correct systematic ways of building up endurance as well as obtaining that cardio goal for each workout session, whilst making everyday fun and exciting. Saying that he is an expert in the field of fitness does not suffice enough when it comes to explaining his knowledge. It goes beyond that. You can tell that he honestly cares about your goals and you as an individual. His kindness, his patience, and genuine personality not only makes him an extraordinary trainer but an amazing person as well. I would recommend Chris as a personal trainer to anyone and everyone!

I've been training with Grace for a couple of weeks now (twice a week) and I've been enjoying all of the sessions so far. She pays great attention, is patient, and makes the work out really fun. I like that she challenges me and explains to me how each exercise works to improve my fitness. I always feel more motivated after each workout and look forward to going back because it's not always the same routine. I'd recommend her if anyone is looking for a fun and challenging work out!

I have worked out with Arielle for a month now and she in the first two week has made me feel better about myself then I have in years! I went on vacation and all I got was complements about how great I looked! having her as my personal trainer was the best decision I have made! I am lazy when it comes to working out so I needed to have someone make me accountable. She is spot on! Tip: Do not make a deal with her to do a different type of exercise, she will just pick a harder one lol! She is amazing!
