I’m in my third month of training with Oga, and I can honesty say that it’s been a great pleasure. From the beginning, Oga has been nothing but flexible about the small details- time, location, length of workout. With my crazy work/life schedule, he made working out with him so easy and effortless! Training with Oga has also been really fun. I love that he changes up the routine, makes it interactive, and knows my limits so he can challenge me until I'm literally sweating beads. Since training with Oga, he’s helped me change my whole workout routine and diet plan to finally see results! I am excited to see what the next three months of training with him will bring. In my first 6am training session with Oga, he made it a point to say that I wouldn’t need coffee after his routine… and he was absolutely right, I haven’t needed it since!

It was great fun training with Jared. My goal was to lose weight and be able to independently workout after training with him. In just 10 workout sessions with Jared I lost over 10lbs, started to look better in shape, can fit into my clothes that I haven’t able to for a while. Since he noted down everything for me, I can certainly workout independently now. It was his motivation and encouragement that has helped me get fitter, stronger, healthier. I would definitely recommend training with him.

Training with Scott is a life changing experience. He is absolutely the best personal trainer I ever have. He is knowledgeable and responsible. I feel like I'm in good hands right after first session with him. I can be so focused on training cuz he has the processed planned for me. And when I have any question, I just text him, and he is soooo nice that he answer each one of them. I've been training with him for 3 weeks so far, I can feel my muscle growing and my body having more energy. I'm sure as long as I don't move too far, I'll keep training with him. I highly recommend him to anyone that want to switch to a more healthy life style and thinking of hiring a personal trainer to help achieve any fitness goal. I don't know about other trainers, but I do know this one is GREAT :).

I've been training with Joe for a little over 2 months, and I train with him twice a week. Joe is GREAT! What I like about him is that he knows how to motivate me, he makes each of my training sessions challenging but rewarding. He is outcome focused, and I've been able to see continual improvement from my sessions. He always ensures that my technique is always correct to avoid any injuries. If motivation, flexibility, and a personal approach is what your looking for in a personal trainer, then Joe is the man for you. I would have no hesitation in recommending him as your personal trainer if you want to achieve your fitness and health goals.

Best experience with a trainer I've ever had! Rock knew my weaknesses and strengths and pushed me to do exercises I wouldn't normally do by myself. He is really great at teaching the correct and safe way to perform exercises so you get results without harming your body. Every workout was something different, from weight training to HIIT to something fun like flipping tires or throwing punches. He not only taught me how to train better but he taught me how to eat healthier for my body and lifestyle. You rock, Rock!

I came to Barroga Fit with Sciatica in my lower back, but I also wanted to lose weight and gain muscle. I personally have tried virtually anything to stop the pain in my lower back. I even did physical therapy and going to a chiropractor. Those were temporary fixes, so I had to change it up. I came across Barroga Fit on yelp. After the first week of working together Ana really knows how to adjust my workouts where it can strengthen my muscles, but also control the pain happening in my lower back. After training with Ana I barely even notice that I am moving without pain in my normal life. Most people might think personal training is just for weight loss, but what I got from training with Ana is just not weight loss, but also my life back.

I have couple months training with Armando and I totally believe I made the right decision. During the last 5 years I’ve been putting up some weight and no feeling too proud about it, especially because I’m short and weight started to cause some foot and knee pain. I’ve always postponed work out, it was not my priority but after training with Armando, I feel like I need to go for a session every day so I can get my “Feeling good” dose. Armando’s positivism makes my work out enjoyable even though he pushes me and takes all my energy with every exercise. Armando has motivated me to keep going and give 100% every time we meet. He is professional, he listens, analyzes every piece of information I give him and he even suggests a relax/stretch session to get rid of stress I bring from work. When I first started, he analyzed my measurements, goals, posture, time and health and came up with a plan to target my problematic areas. I have only couple months training and I can see a few changes already. I feel more energetic and with the desire of keep going. Armando makes sure I have the right posture/form and execute moves in a proper way so that I can get the best from my workout and benefit from every move. I thank Armando for his support and guidance in every session and especially for pushing to keep a good nutrition. I would recommend Armando if you are serious about your work out. He is a great trainer; you will get the best of his knowledge and enthusiasm in every session.

I'd been struggling for a while to find a gym somewhat near my home and work. These days, cross fit gyms and chain gyms are all over the place, but most of them have young, inexperienced trainers and lack one on one instruction with trainers. Lots of injuries and lack of results follow, so I was particularly encouraged when I came to Lala at The Perfect Trainer because she's totally different! I met Lala and we clicked immediately, developing a nice rapport that has only grown since then. She didn't try to measure my body fat, put my data into a fancy software system, or print out a detailed diet plan from some canned software that nobody ever follows. These tools probably all have a potential role in fitness, but many gyms seem to use them mostly to create the illusion of providing value to cover for their trainers inexperience! There was none of this hype with Lala, just good old fashioned hard work. At first, I was super nervous because Lala believes in what she does so much that she actually looks the part. But once we got down to business and I started seeing results I felt like, yeah, I can do this too! The gym itself has everything the trainers need. The location's great, and the space is perfect for personal training. Sessions are personal one on ones so you get the attention you need. If you're looking for a personal trainer, Lala is nothing short of amazing. She will build a program to suit your needs. Workouts are well thought out and you are guided through them in a professional manner. If you're looking for a trainer in the Saratoga area then look no further than Lala at The Perfect Trainer. You've found your new home with her!

I really enjoyed training with Alina because she coached me through an effective work out and also rehabilitation excercises, fully understanding my past chronic pain issues and helping me prevent further injuries. I feel not only stronger, but more confident in my ability to progress to heavier weights and higher intensity workouts. Alina also motivated me to adopt intermittent fasting (IF), which has had a significant impact on my weight management and energy levels. Alina gave me helpful tips on how to start and sustain IF, which I've been doing now for almost 8 months. Overall, Alina has a very strong grasp of mobility, strength, endurance, nutrition and other foundational pieces that trainers need to provide a comprehensive service.

I've been working with Serenity in personal training sessions for the last 6 months. She is a FANTASTIC personal trainer. She has a strong passion for coaching and developing her trainees and is extremely professional. Her passion is coupled with natural talents of empathy and individualized perception of others as well as a competitive edge. When I first met Serenity, she took the time to fully understand my goals and desires for training together. She invested in learning about me, my motivations as well as the roadblocks that I had been encountering in meeting my fitness goals. As we’ve continued to work together, she has continuously worked to customize my workouts to push me, constantly keeping my workouts just within reach while also a solid stretch for improvement. Our time together has truly become the highlights of my week. I can’t recommend Serenity enough to others!

I began working with Nate Moore a few years ago for the sole purpose of losing an extreme amount of weight. At the time I began working with Nate I weighed in at 230 lbs and after 16 months I was down to 125lbs. Prior to working with Nate I had joined several other gyms and always found myself getting bored and losing all motivation very quickly which resulted in not returning. Every single one of Nate's training sessions are exciting and he always provides new fun ways of challenging yourself regardless of your fitness level. His innovative training methods made me LOVE working out. Definitely not your typical boring workout routine. The level of dedication, energy, knowledge, patience and constant support that Nate provides is above and beyond anyone else that I've ever worked with. I believe that these qualities are what make him the absolute best! I highly recommend Nate Moore. I promise you won't be disappointed!

I started working with Martin about 6 weeks before my wedding to focus on losing weight and toning. I was very happy with the results. Martin quickly assessed my fitness level and creates routines to challenge me without demotivating me. Gradually increasing intensity and always integrating new exercises. All without a lot of props and expensive equipment. Exactly what I was looking for. Thanks Martin!

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What should you wear to kickboxing?

What you wear to kickboxing can vary based on the setting. For kickboxing group fitness classes that are part of a gym’s cardio class schedule, standard fitness attire is appropriate. Athletic sneakers, pants or shorts that you can comfortably kick in without getting tangled or flashing anyone, and a top that allows for easy movement when punching and jabbing are all good choices. You won’t need protective gear or gloves, as most cardio-based kickboxing classes do not use punching bags.

Kickboxing training that takes place at a martial arts studio typically requires protective gear. You may need boxing gloves (beginners may want 12-ounce or heavier gloves for more cushioning) and hand wraps that protect and support your hands under the gloves while you punch the bag. If your kickboxing training includes sparring with opponents, you’ll need a mouthguard and any protective head and body gear your studio requires. Always be sure to bring plenty of water, too.

What is a boot camp class?

Fitness boot camps are a heart-pounding way to boost your fitness level. Boot camps are led by a fitness instructor and are based on the concept of military boot camps — intensive workout programs to get new recruits into shape, quickly. Fitness boot camps encourage camaraderie, and the group momentum helps participants get through fast-paced intervals of cardio, isometric training, strength training and endurance drills. Classes may range anywhere from 30 to 60 minutes, and usually meet multiple days per week. Boot camps often run a specific duration of time, say four to six weeks, which creates a team-like environment for class members. Other boot camps run year-round and students purchase package pricing for classes, similar to subscriptions that allow them a set amount of classes per week or per month.

Boot camps can be held indoors at a gym, outdoors in a park or on a beach, in a backyard — anywhere there’s room for running, jumping and sweating. Some instructors also provide DVD and online boot camps. You can also find boot camps tailored to your heart’s desire, such as bikini boot camp, or boot camps for new mothers. Boot camps offer an intense workout and are usually led by energetic instructors pushing you to do your best, but unlike military boot camp drill sergeants, fitness boot camp instructors typically don’t use intimidation or punishment to spur you on. Check with your doctor before starting a boot camp if you have health concerns, and always let your instructor know ahead of time if you have injuries.

Is kickboxing hard?

Kickboxing is as intense a workout as you want it to be. As with any fitness regimen, the more effort you put in, the more results you will get. The type of kickboxing you do will determine how physically challenging it is. Combat or self-defense kickboxing, where you train in a martial arts studio with sandbags or spar against combat partners, can be an intense physical workout. Group kickboxing classes that use sandbags as part of the workout will also elevate the degree of intensity, because of the level of exertion punching and kicking the bag requires. Cardio kickboxing group fitness, which employ kicking and punching moves but no sandbags, has comparable intensity to jogging but works a wider range of muscles while increasing strength, flexibility and coordination. Here are some of the core kickboxing moves:

  • Cross: A straight punch that you throw slightly across your body, using your dominant hand.
  • Jab: A quick, straight, face punch. Usually thrown with the non-dominant hand.
  • Uppercut: A punch thrown up from the midsection (using either hand) that connects with the underside of your opponent’s chin.
  • Hook: A curved punch (using either hand) that connects with your competitor’s jaw or chin.
  • Side kick: A kick delivered when your competitor is at an angle to you. Raise your leg to the side, then bend at the knee to deliver the kick.
  • Front kick: A kick delivered straight on while you are facing your opponent.
  • Roundhouse kick: A kick delivered by swinging a leg up in a clockwise or counterclockwise motion (depending on which leg you’re using) with momentum to strike the opponent with the instep of the foot.

What do you need for kickboxing?

What you need to bring to kickboxing depends on where you are working out and what your goals are. For a gym or fitness club’s cardio-based group kickboxing class that does not use punching bags, you generally need only appropriate workout gear and enough water. For kickboxers who are training in a martial arts studio, working one-on-one with a trainer toward a specific goal or sparring with competitors, you will need your own boxing gloves (12- to 16-ounce gloves provide more protection for beginners) and hand wraps (to protect and support your hands under the gloves, as well as keep them dry). If your lessons are in a martial arts studio, you may not be permitted to wear shoes, so bring clean socks if you don’t like to go barefoot. If your training includes sparring, you may be required to wear a mouthguard and/or protective headgear. Whether you’re in a group fitness class or hardcore training session, bring a sweat towel for your comfort and the comfort of people around you.

How much is a boot camp?

The cost of fitness boot camps depends on how often you go, the package you are purchasing (or if you are paying a drop-in fee), the location of the bootcamp, the equipment the instructors provide, and the background and reputation of the instructor. Smaller towns and areas with a lower cost of living typically have lower rates for boot camp services than big cities and regions with a higher cost of living. If you’re paying per class on a drop-in basis, expect to pay anywhere from $12 to $25 or more, depending on the region and the instructor. When you purchase a package of classes, typically the more you buy at one time, the cheaper each class is. The same boot camp class might be $20 for a drop-in student, $15 for a student who pays for 10 classes per month, and $10 for a student who pays for 30 classes a month. Studio space can also affect costs, so if your boot camp takes place in a high-end gym with top-of-the-line equipment, the prices will likely be higher than a class that meets in an outdoor space with limited or no equipment. Shop around to find the right type of boot camp class and the right instructor for you.
