Brian was a true professional and returned our call and got back to me promptly. He came to the building and gave me a great quote to clean the windows on two penthouses, his prices were very fair and work very professional. The windows were very difficult to clean and he proceeded with a desire to do the best work on our windows. His daughter cleaned the inside and was very careful to get the windows clean clear. Brian did the outside windows with purified water that leaves no spots. He also cleaned our solar panels on the roof which had not been cleaned in twenty years. This should ease our energy bill since this will make the panels much more energy efficient. We will be using B & B again soon to power wash our walkways and windows of other units. I highly recommend him, and will recommend him to my friends. I could not be happier with his work.

I had an old skylight replaced and over 50 broken roof tiles replaced on a 20 year old roof. Vicko and Hector gave me a good quote and a discount for combining the jobs. The work crew was very professional, polite and clean. I was very happy with the results and will use them again in the future.

My 30 years old concrete roof was leaking into my garage, so out the rain bucket, then a second bucket. Roofing tiles were slipping and mortar caps were missing or cracked. It was time for a inspection and maintenance repairs. After three estimates, it was clear that Ron Paveloff had the knowledge, experience, and my confidence that he was the one for me. He pointed out all the little things that other roofer's did not even notice as potential problems. In the future, "He's My 1st. Choice"! Thanks you Mr. Paveloff! I'm happy as a clam.

I was certain that the cost of repairing my wind-damaged roof was going to break me financially, but Tom's price was totally workable. Tom and his crew replaced the entire back half of my roof in one day while I was at work, leaving no trace of their presence on the ground, and a beautiful new and upgraded roof up above. Tom worked directly with my insurance agent to satisfy the certification requirements of my homeowners insurance provider, too. I can't say enough good things about Tom Torres. He really saved the day for me. I would recommend New Millennium to anyone looking for great service, honest dealing, and a truly fair price. You can't go wrong with Tom Torres.

I was referred to Team All Star by my friend who they had done some work for to do my house remodel, they did my roof, my windows, my air conditioning, a new patio and painted. All the work was started at the same time and they completed it in about a week. I am so happy, all the workers from the roofers to the painters did an amazing job, and I just love my windows. Larry came out with Sean and gave me some tips on design and it all has turned out so beautiful. I want to mention that even though I called Larry a lot, he never complained even when it was 10 pm, he always was kind and courteous. Dealing with Larry and Team All Star was like working with my family, they really made me feel important. Thanks you guys!

I received a call within an hour of posting my job on Thumbtack and he came out for a quote the same day. Winter Roofing did an awesome job building the patio cover and took extra care to ensure that everything was solid. They also quickly fixed a few minor shingle issues with the main house roof. Even Winter was great to work with on this project.

I met with Shawn Ross, owner of Ross Renovations, to discuss the repairs needed to fix my leaky roof. He was very knowledgeable and, after a thorough inspection of my roof, he patiently explained what should be done versus what he could do for the limited funds I have available. He was very friendly, upfront and courteous. I was very disappointed that I could not hire him to do my current repairs. I plan to keep his business card handy so that I can hire him for any home repairs I will need in the future.

I'm so glad that I chose CalPro over the roofing company that my sister recommended. When Art arrived, he made me aware of the condition that my roof was in. I knew it wasn't great, but he took pictures and really allowed me to make the right decision. My sister had recommended someone who did her roof, and was a little cheaper, but didn't have any financing options and when I started asking important questions like whether he was licensed and insured, that guy couldn't wait to get out of my house. Ironically, she has 2 leaks and has no idea when he'll get back out to fix them! CalPRO however showed up on time, cleaned up after themselves and were finished in 2 days! Art also spoke with Zac, his manager who was able to get me a little better price on insulating my attic at the same time as my roof! Overall my experience with CalPro Renovations was top notch and I wouldn't hesitate to recommend them to my friends and family.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

Why do I need to clean my roof?

Over time, algae, moss, lichen, dirt and even salt (if you’re near the ocean) can build up on your roof. These buildups can affect the look and function of your roof unless removed. The buildup of organic materials such as moss on a shingle roof can prevent water from sloughing off as it normally would. Trapped water can rot the roof or cause early deterioration of your shingles. Even if you don’t have a shingle roof, moss and lichen absorb water, and that wet material adds weight and stress to your roof — as well as providing a home for insects and other pests, and collecting dirt. For reflective, cool roofs that redirect heat away from the home, algae and moss growths can hamper their ability to deflect the sun, which can affect utility bills. Visually, moss, dirt and algae growths on a roof can have a negative effect on perceived home value and curb appeal. For example, black algae streaks on your roof may cause a potential homebuyer to assume that the roof might need repair or replacement, when it only needs to be cleaned.

Can a roof be cleaned?

Yes roofs can be cleaned, and yes, it’s a real thing. Roof cleaning may actually be a wise investment to prolong the life of your roof. Overgrowth of moss, grime, lichen or algae can all shorten the life of your roof. If you have black streaks growing on your roof, they are likely caused by gloeocapsa magma algae spores that have landed on your roof and taken up residence. Once the algae has grown into streaks, the organism has usually been growing for several months and it’s high time to have it removed. If you live in a rainy part of the country, such as the Pacific Northwest, there’s a good chance you’ll find moss growing on your roof at some point. The northern part of your roof, as well as any parts that remain shaded all day, will provide a wet, cool haven for moss to flourish. Unfortunately this water-absorbing moss can damage your shingle roof, leading to rot if not removed. Beyond roof health and function, a clean roof can boost your curb appeal and potentially boost your home’s resale value. The national average for roof cleaning costs ranges between $270 and $350, although prices can be higher depending on how large your roof is, how steep your roof is, and what type of cleaning is necessary. Typically pros use either a pressure wash or chemical wash (made with a concentrated bleach solution) to remove algae, lichen, moss and dirt.

What chemicals are used to clean roofs?

Roof cleaning is done to remove moss, lichen, algae, and buildup of other grime and dirt. There are several methods for roof cleaning, which can include a chemical soft wash, pressure washing, low-pressure washing and hand washing. When a chemical soft wash is used, a bleach mixture is sprayed onto the roof. The bleach-based solution is absorbed by the algae or moss, which dies from exposure to the chemical. The roof is then sprayed with a low-pressure rinse of water, which loosens the now-dead material, allowing it to slide off the roof.

For homeowners, the Asphalt Roofing Manufacturers Association recommends a mixture of 50 percent laundry-strength liquid chlorine bleach and 50 percent water. Professional roof cleaning companies will use an industrial mixture that is still safe but may be more effective in eliminating algae and moss growths. Asphalt shingle roofs are the most common type of roof, but each roofing material will have its own cleaning needs, so it’s best to consult with your roofing pro before diving in. Don’t do it yourself unless you can safely navigate your roof, the chemicals and a sprayer system. When in doubt, leave it to the pros.

What is a standing seam metal roof?

A standing seam metal roof may be a strong, durable, safe choice when you’re considering metal roofing installation options. A standing seam refers to the raised seam where the sheet metal roofing panels join. Traditionally, shingles and roof panels lie flush to the roof, making them more prone to rust or penetration by water at their seams. In a standing seam metal roof, the raised (or standing) seams run vertically from the roof ridge to the eaves, with no horizontal seams. In addition, the fasteners joining the metal panels together are concealed, providing even fewer opportunities for water or moisture to build up. The cost to install a standing seam metal roof will depend on the type of metal you select, the size of your roof, and the cost of roofing labor in your region. Materials will play a major role in your metal roofing installation costs. If you select standard galvanized steel, the cost per square (100 square feet) might be in the $150-$300 range, while a high-end choice such as copper or zinc could be between $1,000 and $1,500 per square. Here is one example of cost:

  • Standing seam metal roof: $300 per square to start, including materials and labor.
    • A 30-square roof could cost $9,000 or more.

Can a metal roof be installed over shingles?

Metal roofs are durable, environmentally friendly, safe and budget-friendly. If you’re considering an update, metal roofing installation doesn’t have to mean completely removing your old roof. In many cases, metal roofing can be installed over your existing shingles. Research building codes in your state, as many require that after two roofs have been installed, all roofing materials must be completely removed before a third roof can be put on. This protects your home’s structural integrity and your family’s safety. Carefully read contractor reviews and choose someone with extensive experience with metal roofing installation. One concern when installing metal over shingles is that over time, condensation can build on the shingles and cause the metal to rust. This will lead to rust around the panels, making them more likely to come loose in a storm. Nationally, the average cost for metal roofing installation ranges from $6,000 to $20,000. The wide price range represents different roof sizes, different types of metal, and the cost of labor in different parts of the country — and can also include the cost of removing an old shingle roof prior to installing the metal. As a line item, the average cost of removing an old roof to prepare for installing a new roof, plus adding new roof decking, costs on average about $45-$75 per square (the pro roofer’s term for 100 square feet), depending on the pitch of the roof. Always make sure you have a clearly written contract and a warranty on both the labor and the metal.
