Jose Torres and his helper Jose Leyva did an outstanding job repairing my wooden fence which was damaged due to strong winds. He showed up at my house very promptly and gave me a decent estimate. He was very thorough in explaining what needs to be done and very honest about his pricing. So I hired him. He and Jose Leyva showed up on Super bowl Sunday at 8am and I'm very satisfied with the job they have done. Then they cleaned up afterwards. I highly recommend Jose Torres to anyone.

We can't tell you how happy we are with Chadd's services. We needed work on a joint fence and Chadd did everything he possibly could to (and more) be sure that both sides were satisfied and that the job was done properly. He ended up doing several things we had not hired him to do including leaving both properties cleaner than when he started. His services are around the the most affordable you will find anywhere and we will definitely hire Chadd again if we need help in the future. The fence looks great!

Very nice to deal with and a fair price. They fixed the fence (filled it in with new planks). However, the gate still sags and the issue wasn't addressed even though it was clearly not opening or closing. I understand it was late on a Saturday afternoon and they had probably been working all day, but the gate sag should have been fixed.

Jose was prompt (early even!) and quick to respond to all of my messages and calls. At first there was a mixup regarding the quote and what material I needed for the fence. Jose explained the price difference and he purchased the materials I needed that morning to make sure he could finish the project that day. He was very pleasant and easy to work with, and the fence looks great!

My whole cedar fence was replaced efficiently, fast, and they were very clean. It only took two days. They gave me a good price. My neighbors were also very satisfied with the work since we share the fence and are hiring them to replace the rest of their fences. I also intend to hire them again for other landscaping projects. I highly recommend them.

I recently purchased a home and needed several jobs done, ranging from simple to complex. I needed shelves put up in the laundry room, a new mailbox, rafters in the garage, bathroom shower installed, doorbells on both front and back doors, screen door for the patio, hanging (and leveling!) wall decorations, outside wooden fence general maintenance, and more! Once the weather breaks they are to come back and assemble a gas grill, fix a downspout, fix an outside light, and other jobs I have for them. They are professional, neat, very affordable. I have and will recommend them very highly! In the meantime, I will be adding to my list of things I need done!

Charlie did a good amount of landscaping and softscaping on my backyard this year. He also did some fencing, paint jobs, and installed pavers for me. He is reliable, takes directions well, and his prices are competitive. ~ Dan V. San Diego, CA

Mr. Jaime has a good team. I am so happy to hire him on our fence project. Later I hired him to do the concrete, oh, one of the best concrete men in San Diego. Highly recommended! Nice person, easy going, and flexible, too. He returns calls pretty quickly. Highly recommended.

Mr. John Griffin is a great person to hire. He is very professional and knowledgeable. He offered a very reasonable price after many others declined to even come to take a look at my broken fence. He was not on a set schedule so he came and went as he needed until the job was done. And the price was so much better than the next closest quote. I will hire him again for future jobs.

I needed a new fence carpenter to build a fence and add a wall inside my home that was being remodeled. The fence looked beautiful and the wall was done well so I decided to ask if they also did bathroom or kitchen remodeling work. Bill said that he had a wide range of work he could perform or manage for me so I started small and had them redo a small bathroom. The bathroom work included cabinets, bathtub, shower walls, new travertine floor and painting. After the bathroom was complete and saving up for a few weeks we moved on to the kitchen. He assisted in the design and layout with the designer. The work took several weeks but it was beautiful and was much better than the drawings. After several months of work on my home, it is perfect with there help. I can't thank them enough and will pass there info on to friends.

Juan one-handedly remodeled on of my bathroom floor and vanity. He was courteous, diligent, and very personable. He wanted to ensure I was satisfied every step of the remodel. If I were to remodel again and want true workmanship than Juan is your man. Thank you for turning my 1970's bathroom to a modern, hotel-like. For sure this is our "guest bathroom" with all the amenities. Juan was also willing to take on a very hard vinyl fence replacement, basically correcting a mistake and accomplished a pretty hard goal. I look forward to working with him again and recommend him 100%.

Jorge came out and quoted a fence section and said when he would be available to do it. He did the job on time and excellent work. He hauled away the old fence and cleaned up after the work was finished. The fence is perfect and I could not have asked for a better job.

Recently worked with Charles and his team on our new house. His team was wonderful. Brendan is a joy to work with and has excellent craftsmanship. Karen, his designer is absolutely lovely and truly helped is incorporate a our wished into a reality. She brought amazing insight and ideas to the project. Our tile work in the bathroom is lovely. The small space we were working with ended up feeling spacious and airy just how we wanted. Professionalism is very important and his team demonstrated that day in and day out. They definitely took pride in their work and it shows in the final project.

We just wrapped up the fence project for our house which was massive. Dick followed my concept and made revisions whenever i required. It was fun and easy to work with him. There's always a 2 way mindset. It turned out excellent, including the trellis and pergola. The 2 small gates out front to give us security was installed and my overall look is splendid to view! Would recommend Dick to anyone having a home project. He delivers!

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How much does it cost to install a vinyl fence?

A new fence can mean added home value, increased curb appeal, and improved home security. The national average vinyl fence installation cost is $4,600. Vinyl fences have a number of appealing qualities such as their durability, their lasting good looks (they don’t weather like wood does), their versatility, and the fact that they require little to no maintenance such as staining. Fencing companies typically charge per linear foot for vinyl fence installation. They calculate their estimates based on materials to be used, height of fence, linear feet of the proposed fence, and the accessibility of the terrain. If the workers need to level the land before work begins, your vinyl fence installation costs will probably increase. Vinyl fences are typically more expensive than wood or chain-link. For example, one company might charge $19-$22 per linear foot for a basic 6-foot vinyl privacy fence. Another company might charge $25-$35 per linear foot for standard vinyl fencing, while decorative fencing with custom detail could increase that cost to $50 per linear foot. For a 6-foot-high white vinyl privacy fence with two walk-through gates (plus demolition and disposal of the old fence), the cost of the total project could run $8,000. A 4-foot-high, 36-linear-foot white picket vinyl fence with one gate could cost $2,600.

How much does it cost to put up a chain-link fence?

Chain-link fence is one of the most affordable options for adding safety and value to your home or business. The national average chain-link fence installation cost is $2,750. Chain-link fences are relatively simple for the pros to install; a fence of less than 150 linear feet can often be put up in under one day. A good rule of thumb is to add an additional workday for each additional 100 linear feet of fence to be installed.

Chain-link fence installation costs are affected by the fluctuating cost of steel, regional labor rates, the height of fence you select, and the features you select, such as a powder-coated finish. The industry standard is galvanized steel, which is rust- and corrosion-resistant. Galvanized chain-link fence installation cost, including labor and materials, is typically $12 per linear foot. For a more contemporary and elegant option, black powder-coated galvanized chain-link fence might cost approximately $15 per linear foot on average, including materials and labor. For industrial sites or businesses, 10-foot-high galvanized chain-link fences may provide additional security, but also have an added cost. A 10-foot-high chain-link fence could cost $17-$18 per linear foot, including labor and materials.

How much is a redwood fence per foot?

A redwood fence is a long-lasting home investment that can add beauty and major curb appeal to your home. Redwood fence installation costs are higher than those for pressure-treated pine or cedar, due to the relative scarcity of the wood. Pricing can vary for redwood fence installation costs based on regional labor rates, current prices of redwood planks, the height and linear feet of the fence, and any custom designs or features. Redwood fences, in addition to being beautiful, are naturally more resistant against bugs and rot than less hardy or dense woods. Redwood fences also generally fare well in wet or humid climates due to their natural oils — which also make them easier to maintain. Materials costs per linear foot for redwood planks can range anywhere from $6 to $20 or more, depending on grade, quality and height.

How much does it cost to install a wood fence?

Help define your property line, protect your home and yard, and boost your curb appeal with a new wood fence. The national average for wood fence installation cost is $3,250. Wood fence installation costs will vary based on your geographic location, the type of wood you select, the height and style of wood fence you desire, and the condition of your property. Pressure-treated pine is a common and attractive choice that is usually resilient against rot and bugs. Cedar is another budget-friendly option that, although more expensive than pressure-treated pine, can be more affordable than redwood or teak. A wood fence requires maintenance to ensure its long-term health and beauty, so keep future staining and painting costs in mind when you’re calculating fence installation costs. Here are some examples of how height and material affect the approximate cost of wood fences:

  • 6-foot-high, pressure-treated pine fence: $15-$17 per linear foot.
  • 4-foot-high, pressure-treated pine fence: $13-$20 per linear foot.
  • Cedar fence: $18-$25 per linear foot.
  • 6-foot-high, double-sided (meaning both sides are uniform), pressure-treated pine fence with 6x6 posts: $25 per linear foot.
  • 12-foot-high, pressure-treated pine fence with custom detailing: $75 per linear foot.
  • 6-foot-high, pressure-treated pine fence with a custom lattice top: $30-$50 per linear foot.

How much does it cost to install a fence gate?

Adding a gate to your fence can be a practical way to provide access to a yard, work area or outdoor living space while ensuring safety and privacy. Gate installation costs will vary based on the gate material you select, the size of your gate, whether you install a fence at the same time, and any special features you’d like to add. Standard opening size for a single-wide gate is 4 feet; a double-wide gate is 8 feet. A small gate may be for decoration; a double-wide gate can be mounted on a rolling caster system to allow access for cars or wide loads. Here are some examples of average fence gate installation costs:

  • 4-foot, single-swing chain-link gate: $100 for materials and installation costs.
  • 28-foot wheeled chain-link gate on a caster system: $800-$1,000 for materials and installation costs.
  • 4-foot, single-swing wood gate: $75.
  • 8-foot double-wide wood gate: $150.
  • 4-foot white vinyl walk-through gate: $300–$400 for materials and installation costs.
  • 8-foot, double-wide white vinyl gate: about $800 for materials and installation costs.
  • White vinyl gate fence more than 8 feet wide: $1,200-$1,500 for materials and installation.
  • Arched black powder-coated aluminum pool gates: $175-$200 per gate.
