Jason, Jon and their team did an amazing job! They installed pavers and artificial turf in our back and side yards. After meeting with many landscapers we felt comfortable choosing JSJ! They delivered quality work at a fair price and were very professional throughout the process. Jon is great at his craft and is very accommodating! Jason and Jon also had a lot of great ideas throughout the process. We would definitely recommend them and now love spending time in our backyard!

Paul and his team gave our backyard a whole new life! We are beyond thankful for the work Paul and his crew did. Let me start by saying I/we are very picky and thorough customers. We spent 1-2 months vetting out potential vendors before deciding on QualiTurf. The response time, professionalism, turf quality, warranty, and price point were impeccable. All of my questions were thoroughly answered, accurate measurements were taken during the consultation and a quote was provided within 48 hours. When I changed my design plan a week before the work was set to start Paul went out of his way to meet me at my home to review my new plans. As the work was being performed I asked for a few minor adjustments and Paul and his team graciously agreed and gave me their professional opinion on my request. I just can't say enough positive things about this Team. If you're int he market for Turf, don't think twice--call QualiTurf and get the process started today. you won't regret it. It's been the best outdoor investment yet--our little girl loves it.

Richard and Anthony did a amazing job on my remodel, they replaced new fescue turf and upgraded the irrigation system with MP rotator sprinkler heads. Pricing was reasonable and the job was done quick and on time. I would recommend them for any SOD replacement.

Ronsi had a positive attitude and worked diligently to complete the tremendous task get our landscaping spruced up so that we can sell our house. I especially appreciated how he transformed our backyard from a daunting field of foxtails and fig leaves, to a cleared space ready for someone else to improve! He has a joyful personality and great work ethic! I highly recommend him! I included a before and after pic of the backyard.

Caleb and August are nice guys and were good to work with. They seemed VERY knowledgeable when I got the bid. For my yard, about 510 SQ, the bid with low end material was $3500, including some drain work. The time estimate was 2 days. I expected 3 days, to be honest. They listened to my concerns, particularly about avoiding smell issues with Artifical turf and dogs. They had experience in the field for 6-7 years. When the guys dug into my existing drainage system to make it work with the new material, they found it was not draining correctly. This meant that my 2 day project turned into a week-long disaster with ripped out walkway, dug out front and back yards. I appreciate very much that the guys want to do things right, and I don’t object to that. However, it was not possible to get a reasonable estimate of the cost overruns, so I was unable to make informed choices about the ongoing work. In addition, everything was quite a mess - which is probably always true of drainage digs, but it did impact my life more than I had anticipated when we started down this path. Plus side: I felt comfortable with Caleb and August - nice guys, very professional and polite. I had no concerns having them on site. They are knowledgeable and honest. Cons: Caleb was not able to give me an accurate estimate on the added drainage work, which meant the project went way over budget. My initial estimate of $3500 snowballed to $5900 when the work was done, although the scope of the work had changed. The project took longer (probably unavoidable) and was messier than I anticipated. I do notice a smell in the yard, and wasn’t happy with Caleb’s nonchalant response when I brought it up... never thought I would notice something after only a few days. The walkway is not correctly repaired, and will require some expert work I think. Some small items were not completed, such as moving rocks that were displaced.

Enrique has designed and built two of my back yards. The first involved a new home in which he added a cement patio, a self-sustainable pond, grass area, a sunken jacuzzi, and a fabulous barbecue island with state-of-the-art appliances. He also embellished the back yard windows by adding frames, and in the end, he topped everything off with the magic of lighting, that made both my front and back look like a magazine photograph! The second job he did for me involved a rennovation, he had to demolish some useless structures in the back and once again, he turned it into a great living space that now serves for family entertainment and friends. I liked that in this case, he recommended drought-resistant plants, I even decided to go for artificial turf and it looks awesome! What I appreciated most about Enrique was his in-depth knowledge about everything that a landscaping job involves, with many options suggested by him to meet my budget and my preferences. He places extreme attention to detail, finishes the job on time, which is unusual, and does not come up with surprise costs in the end! His customer service is outstanding! If you are looking for an honest landscaper who will truly listen to your wants and needs, Enrique is your guy! I was fortunate to land with him after having dealt with so many others who were not licensed, didn't know how to solve problems, and charged for a mediocre job. Oh, by the way, he also speaks Spanish, which was heaven-sent in my case; he brings experience and unique ideas from research and jobs he has done here and abroad. He will patiently sit with you and show you pictures of what he envisions for you, as he guides your decisions and your expenditure. I can assure you, he will take great care of you!

Water Wise Grass put in artificial turf in my front yard. Mike, the owner, looked at the design I had scratched out and brought it to life even more beautify than I had imagined. Mike's crew showed up on time everyday, worked fast and efficiently and kept the work site very clean at the end of each day. Mike's bid was very reasonable and the selection of grass types was broad. I chose the highest quality he presented, and he guaranteed it would look very nice. Well, sure enough, the turf looks fantastic. Everyone who passes by compliments me on the appearance. The turf is so real-looking: the color, the texture and even the "thatch" in between the blades. My next project is to turf the backyard. Guess who I'm going to call to do the work?

I had the turf installed while I was on vacation and when I arrived back at the house the synthetic turf looked outstanding. The area was clean and there was no indication that a crew had spent anytime in the backyard. The turf looks so good tat I will be installing it in the front yard and use Green Global Turf.

    Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What does a landscape contractor do?

Landscape contractors work from outdoor architectural or design plans to build and install hardscaping or softscaping for the client, much as a general contractor uses architectural designs to build a house. Landscape contractors are experts in soil drainage, grading, hardscaping (installing concrete paths and retaining wall, building ponds, etc.), and planting. They have heavy equipment such as excavators and tractors to prepare the land as needed.

Some landscape contractors are also landscape architects or landscape designers. The titles can be compared with those in home construction: A building or landscape architect must earn a specialized architecture degree and pass an exam to have a license. A designer — whether an interior designer or a landscape designer — does not usually require a license to work. Landscape contractors are not required by law to work from plans designed by a landscape architect, so you may work directly with the landscape contractor to specify the work you’d like done. The national average cost for large-scale landscaping projects is $10,160. Pricing can vary greatly depending on the project scope, materials and design.

How do you find a good landscape architect?

Hiring a landscape architect is an investment in your home. Landscaping can reduce water bills, improve your home resale value, add to your daily living experience and significantly boost curb appeal. A landscape architect will draw the designs for your new landscape; you’ll want to hire a landscape contractor to carry out the plans. Many companies provide design-build landscaping services, with a company architect creating plans for your vision and the landscape contractor executing the vision. With the proper academic background and licensing, a person can be both landscape architect and landscape contractor. Here are a few tips for finding a great landscape architect:

    • Research online portfolios and find several landscape architects whose work interests you.
    • Read online reviews of client experiences.
    • Research whether the landscape architects you are interested in are currently licensed and in good standing with the licensing board, and check whether any complaints have been issued against them. Each state will have their own searchable database. For example, you can search for California landscape architects via the state’s Department of Consumer Affairs.
    • Request bids from your selected landscape architects.
    • Hire the one you like the most, taking care to have a clearly written contract outlining scope of work.

What should you look for when hiring a landscaper?

Landscaping can be costly — though it usually pays off in curb appeal and home resale value — so finding a landscaper who is worth the investment is important. When hiring a landscaper, look for proven success with the type of results you want. For example, if you know you want a drought-tolerant yard, research websites, reviews and portfolios that showcase beautiful drought-tolerant yards that the landscaper has installed. In addition to relevant experience, you’ll want to find a landscape contractor who has good client reviews. Good communication skills are another important quality in a landscape contractor, since everything from plant selection to hardscape installation needs to be discussed and agreed upon. A landscape contractor who is reliable, easy to understand and able to listen to what you want will help make the process seamless and enjoyable.

Hire skilled professionals for absolutely everything.
