Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What is a life coach?

A professional, accredited life coach works with people to help them make important changes in their life, either growing in their profession or changing gears in their personal lives. They help clients turn their dreams or wishes into realistic, attainable goals. They guide people through the process of making life changes by helping them evaluate the steps they must take to reach a particular goal, then help them decide how — and whether — to take those steps in the most efficient, effective and rewarding way possible. A life coach acts as a motivator, strategist and accountability partner. Unlike a therapist, a life coach doesn’t help solve problems from your past — they’re focused on helping you move forward with new ways of acting and thinking that will help you reach your goals. Some people specialize in particular types of life coaching, including life balancing coaches, small business coaches, executive coaches and personal finance coaches. Some meet clients in person, while others hold consultations over the phone.

Regardless of which type of life coach you’re interested in, make sure the person holds an International Coach Federation (ICF) credential. There are three tiers of credentials: Associate, Professional and Master, which require coaching experience ranging from 100 hours to 2,500 hours.

What is a career coach?

If you’re interested in furthering your career and want expert help, a career coach is a smart solution. A career coach is a professional you hire to guide you during a job search or a career transition, or to help you improve and advance in your current position. A career coach analyzes your work situation and learns what your professional goals are. They then create a strategy to help you achieve your targets. Throughout the process they should provide objective feedback and guide you in approaching the process strategically. Here are some of the tools and tasks a career coach may assist you with:

  • Helping you build a strong resume that reflects your work history, potential, and skills
  • Coaching for interviews and strategies for solid answers built around your resume and the target job
  • Defining your career goals
  • Creating a plan for job searching
  • Improving networking strategies and skills
  • Developing strategies for negotiating raises or promotions
  • Assessing why you’re not getting where you want to go
  • Identifying new positions or career opportunities that fit your skills

Why is career counseling important?

Career counseling can help you discover your career path, help you overcome challenges preventing you from finding happiness in your job, or help you learn more about career opportunities that are available to you. Career counselors are typically counselors who specialize in helping guide people into their best career choices. As professionals, they have typically completed a master’s degree in counseling with a focus on career counseling and bring a nuanced understanding of the emotional blocks that prevent someone from doing what they love or getting ahead in their current position. Here are some of the ways that career counseling can help:

  • Identify your skills and talents and how they correlate to different career paths
  • Educate you about the educational requirements for launching in various careers and what earnings can look like
  • Help you understand the kind of environment you want to work in, and which careers are best suited for that
  • See opportunities to transfer your existing skill set to other career areas
  • Help you identify causes of tension or unhappiness in your current career and how to overcome those difficulties
  • Help you create a game plan for moving forward
  • Provide a safe space for you to understand your feelings about career choices you’re making

What is a career counselor?

If you’re feeling lost in your career path, overwhelmed, in need of a job but confused as where to start, or ready for change but uncertain what you want, a career counselor is a good choice for you. A career counselor is typically a licensed professional who has earned a master’s degree in counseling — likely with an emphasis on career counseling. Each state has different licensing requirements for career counselors, so be sure to research before reaching out to a pro.

Due to their academic backgrounds, career counselors often have a more holistic and in-depth approach than a career coach. Career coaches are not regulated by states and also tend to be more business-focused — a good fit for those who know what they want but need help achieving it. On the other hand, a career counselor provides guidance and clarity around some of the more emotional aspects that job hunting and career movement entail. Career counselors meet with you in a series of one-on-one sessions. They assess your personality and learn what drives you. They get a detailed understanding of your work history and your hopes, and often work to help you discover any internal blocks preventing you from going where you want to go. Hiring a career counselor is appropriate at any time in your career, from recent graduate to executive-level management.

How much does it cost to hire a career coach?

When it’s time to take your career to the next level, it’s time to hire a career coach. The cost to have a career coach help you with your professional journey will vary based on how many sessions you require, the level of coaching you desire, and the rates of the coach as determined by their experience, expertise, education and training. On average, career coaching sessions can range from 60 to 120 minutes, depending on the professional and what your needs are. Career coaches in smaller towns and areas with a lower cost of living will also typically have lower rates than those residing in large metro areas like New York, although most do offer remote coaching. Many coaches also offer a free introductory consultation, which gives you the opportunity to determine if their personality and coaching style are the right fit. It’s helpful to ask the coach about their relevant experience and get references from former clients. Depending on the professional, session rates could range anywhere from under $60 to well over $250 per session. Package discounts are a good way to commit to the relationship as well as get savings on services.

Typically career counselors offer reduced rates when you sign on for their services on an ongoing basis. Why get a life coach?

People of all ages and in all careers have called in a life coach. Life coaches are accredited professionals who can help you figure out the tangible changes you can make in your life to reach your goals; they can even help you turn your dreams into goals, if you’re not sure where to go next. A life coach can also help people find their purpose in life. Life coaching clients often have an idea of what they want to do, such as help people or work with animals, but don’t know how to turn that passion into a career. A life coach can help clients work through the options to find a clear path with concrete steps that lead to an attainable goal. A life coach can also help clients make a major career change, such as starting a new business. Life coaches can help clients develop better habits that will make them more successful, acting as an accountability partner. Life coaches also often guide their clients through major transitions in life, such as a career change or other stressful situations that are made easier with guidance from a neutral third party.

The average national cost to meet with a life coach ranges from $80 to $130 an hour. Some coaches offer per-session pricing, especially for one-time meetings; expect to pay an average of $100-$125. For example, three 60-minute sessions cost an average of $300, four 60-minute sessions cost an average of $350, and four 60- to 90-minute sessions plus unlimited contact between sessions cost an average of $400. An Associate Certified Coach, who holds a certification that requires only 60 hours of training and 100 hours of coaching experience, will charge less than a Master Certified Coach, who typically has at least 200 hours of training and 2,500 hours of coaching experience.

I sought out a life coach because I was feeling stuck and looking for personal growth. I looked around and kept coming back to Jen. Her Thumbtack description fits perfectly with what she provides. I have moved through exactly what I was hoping to. She helped me acknowledge parts of me I didn't know were there which has been AMAZING! As a trained MFT, I expected our sessions to be a little more mechanical but they were far more natural and intuitive. I'm leaving these sessions with tools and knowledge as well as a deeper sense of self and inner peace. Although I have finished for now, I will definitely be back when I'm ready for another round of personal growth.

I started seeing Kali toward the end of 2014. I'd been laid off from my job of 12 years several months prior and had recently relocated to San Diego, and I was looking for help in figuring out what I wanted to do with my life and career during this time of transition and beyond. I found Kali to be a wonderful therapist and coach. She's sharp, empathetic, supportive, and always makes you feel as if you are her top priority. One thing I truly appreciated about Kali is that she's tough. She will call you on your BS and push you in ways that may make you feel uncomfortable at first, but it's all part of the process of breaking through barriers that are holding you back. She will give you work to do and expect to see progress made, and she will not tiptoe around the issues you need to confront. I know that genuine growth and change does not come easily so as long as you understand this, do not expect instant miracles, and are willing to do the work, then Kali will give you the tools you need to bring real positive change into your life. I had to stop seeing Kali for budgetary reasons but I will not hesitate to see her again if I need additional guidance or help. I did not always look forward to our sessions -- because often I had not done all the work I was supposed to -- but I always left our sessions feeling relaxed, empowered, and self-assured. Thank you, Kali, for believing in me!

I found Jeremy a few months back while in a little rut in my life. I needed help figuring out who I was, how to better read my own emotions, and generally work through some personal ego issues of mine. Right after our first session, Jeremy sent over his 7 day guided crash course on meditation. This has helped me immensely to build a morning routine. It's also the basis of Jeremy's teachings and coaching sessions. Before him, I knew (sorta) what ego was but I had no idea how much it really controlled our lives and actions. Being able to step back, catch my ego and reflect on how I would typically react and if that was actually how I actually wanted to respond. He's helped me learn how to respond, not react. I've been speaking with Jeremy weekly, and I typically write random things down throughout the week and go over it with him on our call. His view points are always unbiased and he'll disagree with you and your actions. I love the fact that you don't just pay him to coddle you, you pay him to help you take control of your life, even if it hurts to hear it sometimes. Can't recommend Jeremy enough. Try his free-consultation, it cant hurt! He makes you feel very comfortable and his vibe is very very chill and unjudgemental. Overall, I've been working with him weekly for over 2 months now and will continue doing so.

Lisa is very comfortable in her being and has a very compassionate energy to her. I came to her in a time of heavy stress and the work we did together brought me to a much more relaxed state. We did some pranayama and meditations that I found quite helpful and I still use. Of course we talked and she shared some wisdom with me, as she has a long list of credentials , which brought new perspectives to me but primarily the time we spent together was simply us connecting to each other as human beings and me learning how to cultivate self-love. Which she said was something I sorely needed and I agreed. I can tend to be a rather callous and lonesome man, part of the reason I sought some guidance. Since seeing Lisa Ive been able to attract new people to my life without much effort. To me that is a phenomenal, joyful result and a change I can attribute to making the investment into the sessions. We worked on balancing my masculine/feminine energy, she explained to me the yin and yong. My ego was so centered in a rigid masculine space and wants to reject any part of my being that could be considered feminine. However the sessions inspired change in me, to drop my ego and motivated me to take new postive actions. So I took the suggested steps, which to me is what the coaching is really all about and why I consider the experience so successful. Part of balancing my energy has been simple as changing my exercise routine. Lisa suggested some yin based activities such as swimming. I have been swimming in the ocean every weekend since visiting her and it has been incredible and so healing for me. Its brought new friends and experiences in my life I would not have had otherwise had I not gone to see her. For that I am very grateful. Ive seen other therapists/psychologists in the past. Lisa is the only one I could leave such a high recommendation for.
