I have been a student of Greg Russell for two years. When I started I couldnt even hold a guitar right. Every week, Greg assigned me homework to practice, but its not like normal homework. He would assign me actual songs to practice that required certain techniques to play. In the beginning, I would only play metal music, but with my increased skills, I started looking into different genres. I am now studying the components of funk and rap music.
Greg Russell is different from other guitar teachers in so many ways. For one thing, he can figure out how to play a song just by listening to it. That was one of the most helpful things for me. If he didnt know a song, I would play it on my iPod and he would write it down on paper for me to read, which brings me to my next subject, teaching.
Gregs teaching methods were extra helpful to me. He would go slowly if I needed to fix something, he taught me how to read tablature, and he knew countless songs from every genre of todays music. One of the most important things that I liked about Greg was that he is skilled in playing both the guitar and the bass. So when I wanted to start learning to play the bass, he knew as much about it as he knew about the guitar.
I would always come to his class knowing what song I wanted to learn. Thanks to Greg and his teachings, I am now in a band and hoping to start having performances later this year. I owe a big thanks to him. Without him, I never would have become a musician. I hope he can do the same for many more people.
