Sergio (owner of Kecko Plumbing), came out to our residence in a timely manner and provided exceptional services. His estimate was spot on from when he walked in the door and provided the services that he stated he was going to provide. The estimate was free of charge and he did the work in a timely manner. He is an excellent plumber and I highly recommend him as opposed to the larger, over-rated, and expensive plumbers that are out there. Thank you very much Sergio for the wonderful service.

Tyler installed a new water heater for me the day after I called, arrived on time and got the job done. He quoted the price ahead of time and stuck to it, even though there were a couple of unforeseen challenges. Unlike so many other plumbers, he didn't add other items onto his bill. Straight forward, honest, and refreshing to work with. I would highly recommend him and will definitely be calling him for future plumbing services.

Tim did great jobs and gave reasonable price. We have home warrentee insurance but they told us don't cover the my plumbing leaking and left me 75$ bills only for a technician come to see give a quote $400. The we find thumbtack and have 3 responses and contact with two of them. First one gave us 1000$ quote. Then we switch to Tim. He give us $169 quote, do wonderful job to fix our plumbing leaking problem. We are So Happy to have Tim to help us out. Thank you Tim. We're happy to keep Tim and ask him help to fix our electricity problem also. We won't wast money for warrantee insurance company for $75 quote and do nothing. We trust Tim 35 years work experience and will let our friends know him.

I always dread having people come to my house to do work for me...they are usually overpriced, and not the quality you would expect when paying so much! Rick was an absolute pleasure! He was prompt to respond, on time, great work, cleaned up after himself (always a must), and the price was so fair! I would highly recommend him to anyone in need of plumbing work! And I’ll definitely use him the next time! Added to Rolodex!

Luis did a great job for us! We needed several plumbing tasks, including installing new faucets and shower head in our master bath, installing our clothes washer in a tray for second floor laundry, replacing our garbage disposal, and reseating a toilet that came loose from the tile floor. Luis arrived right on time, inspected all the tasks, and provided a quote for services that was very reasonable. He worked diligently And finished all tasks a little earlier than he estimated. His work was perfect and he left every area of the house that he worked in super clean. On top of all the great work, Luis was very friendly and personable, very respectful of our space. It was easy to have him working around in our house that day. He has excellent customer service skills. I will hire him again in the future!

Honestly I do not know where to begin. I have had experience with over 20 different plumbers and plumbing companies in the greater San Diego area. Not one of them were as knowledgeable, honest, or affordable as ACPS Plumbing and Drain. Working with him you can tell that they care and take pride in their work. On multiple occasions they have resolved long term and urgent plumbing issues sooner than I expected. Several occasions I hired them to fix issues from another plumber. The saying you get what you pay for holds true to this company but goes deeper then that. The quality of their work exceeds the price.

Mike seems to be one of the few desert contractors that operate with high integrity, skilled in his trade at reasonable prices. He was upfront on cost for material and labor and never tried to up-sell. She completed the job as promised and was a pleasure to deal with overall. Immediately hired him for another project. He is my new to go to plumber moving forward. Highly recommend.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What are plumbers and what do they do?

Plumbers are skilled professionals who are trained to install and maintain pipes and systems for drinking water, sewage and drainage. They usually have trained through four- to five-year training programs, which include apprenticeships, via trade schools and community colleges. Plumbers’ areas of expertise typically go beyond pipes to include mathematics, blueprint reading, plumbing codes and water distribution. They handle plumbing emergencies, such as broken pipes or clogged drains, and install and maintain everything from a new piping system to a replacement faucet. Plumbers also know how to install bathtubs and showers, toilets, water heaters and dishwashers. Plumbers may work on residential or commercial sites, sometimes designing and laying out a pipe system during construction.

How long is a water heater supposed to last?

Your water heater is an essential part of your home, heating water for showers, dishwashing, laundry and more. On average, a traditional water heater will last 8-12 years. The general consensus is that it’s better to replace your water heater with a new one than to repair one that’s 10 years old or more. Older models are less energy-efficient and thus more costly to run than newer models with better technology. Here are some indicators of when it may be time to replace an old water heater instead of repairing it:

  • Leaks: If leaking is not caused by loose connections, the water may be seeping out through slight fractures in the metal of the tank that have formed over time.
  • Strange noises: Clanking, rumbling and other noises can mean that sediment has formed on the base of your tank, contributing to fissures leaks, and inefficiency.
  • Age: If it’s more than 10 years old, it’s probably time to replace.
  • Discolored or rusty water: Have a pro check it out; if the problem isn’t resolved by draining and cleaning, you’ll want to replace the heater.
  • Lack of hot water: Inconsistent heating and hot water supply that runs out too quickly likely means it’s time for a new unit.

Why is the water in my house not getting hot?

If the water in your house is not getting hot, it may be time for water heater repair. Nationally, the average water heater repair cost ranges between $120 and $200, although prices can range up to $400, depending on the problem and materials. Competent homeowners may also be able to try DIY fixes, whether they have a traditional gas or electric water heater or a tankless gas or electric heater. Troubleshooting the different issues that can arise with each of the styles requires some knowledge of how they operate and what red flags to look out for. For a natural gas water heater, the first step is to check whether the pilot light has gone out. It’s important to follow the manufacturer’s directions if you want to relight it yourself. If you smell gas, stop everything and call your gas company — the smell could signal a dangerous gas leak. If your household’s water is not getting hot enough, you can try increasing the temperature on the water heater’s front dial above the standard setting of 120 degrees; for safety, always turn off electricity to the unit before adjusting temperatures. If you keep running out of hot water, your household may simply need a higher-capacity water heater, so consider upgrading. Quick professional fixes include replacing the thermostat or heating elements and cleaning and repairing the thermocouple.

How much does it cost to install a hot water heater?

You’ll know when it’s time to install a new water heater. Water heater installation costs average between $360 and $780 nationally, with rates increasing depending on the project. The total project cost will be higher when you include the cost of the heater itself. Select your new water heater based on the number of occupants in your home and the number of gallons of capacity you’ll need. Installation costs can vary based on the type of water heater you are removing and the type you are installing, any necessary repairs, regional cost of labor, and whether disposal of the old heater is included. Natural gas water heaters retail on average between $650 and $900 for standard models. Electric water heaters range between $300 and $700 for standard models. Tankless electric water heaters retail on average between $250 and $700 for standard models. Tankless gas water heaters retail on average between $200 and $1,300.

A company may charge approximately $1,000 to replace a 50-gallon tank-style electric water heater (not including any upgrades required by building codes). Replacing a gas-powered water heater might cost $1,100 (not including code upgrades). Some companies roll the disposal of an old heater into the overall cost of the new water heater installation. Other professionals charge an additional removal fee that can range from $35 to $150.

How do you find a good plumber?

Whether you need a plumber to perform drain repair, install a new fixture, or replace rusty pipes, you need to make sure you hire someone reliable who will finish your job on time and within budget. Start by asking the plumbers on your short list these questions:

  • What is the total cost? Make sure your estimate includes materials and labor. Find out whether the plumber will be providing the materials and whether you’re being charged an hourly rate (which is variable) or a flat fee.
  • Is removal and cleanup included in the job? Some plumbers leave behind old parts, while others include the cleanup in the cost.
  • Is the work guaranteed? Find out whether the work (as well as the parts or fixtures) are guaranteed under a warranty.

Follow these additional tips for confidently hiring a plumber or other skilled professional.
