I've been wanting to convert my living room into a bedroom, but I didn't know who to hire. I asked around and a lot of contractors asked for too much money, around $1,000-$2,000 just for a door installation. I hired Slavik because he gave me the best quote. He arrived the very next day to inspect my apartment and gave me a few options. Slavik and his team installed the door in record time and they did an outstanding job making sure it fits and functions properly. I couldn't have asked for a better job, plus the cost was reasonably affordable. These guys are the best! I'll be hiring Slavik as my trusted contractor for all my future renovations.

Milko was wonderful, professional and detail oriented. In fact, he was the very first person to respond to my post and within a couple of hours, at my door to give an estimate. And even though the job ended up taking an extra three hours of his time, he stuck to the original estimate which is a sign of professionalism and someone I’d hire again and again. Highly recommend Milko Yong!

Had some rot around the side entrance to my garage. I could see that it went beyond just the door frame. Working six days a week made Sunday the only time I could be around. No problem for Fred. Came over punctually, had all the necessary tools and material ready to go. We had spoken about the job in length before, and so he even had a new door ready to go on the first trip out. Replaced the door, frame, and a portion of the mud sill. He did it all from the inside, so there was no extensive repair on the siding. He had the whole thing done in about 4 hours. He was going to come back once the sheetrock mud dried and finish painting the wall and trim, but he had already saved me so much time and money I felt guilty. I like to paint anyhow, so I just did it myself the next day. Great job!

I hired Jasper to build a custom storage bench for me, and a modern barn door. Jasper responded to my post and came by to see the space prior to giving me a quote. He took my ideas and made some suggestions, and drew me a plan of what the pieces would look like. He was also able to find wood that matched my existing wooden floors and mango wood furniture very well. The bench he built fits perfectly in my space and looks seamless. The barn door is very modern (just what I wanted) and looks fantastic in my room. He also kindly offered to come by in a month to ensure that there was no issues and adjust anything to my liking once I have had time to use the pieces. Overall turnaround from the time he responded to my Thumbtack post to delivery of items was less than 2 weeks.

Fantastic experience with Ace's Garage Door and would highly recommend them! I needed to get an old wood door replaced in San Francisco. I contacted several companies to get quotes for my garage door, but they stood out for their professionalism and speed of response. They were able to get a technician out to take measurements within a day, and were flexible on scheduling to get the door installed. The installer who showed up was friendly, professional and worked quickly and efficiently. I was really happy with the final product.

Tyler and his crew were great to work with. Their prices are competitive, and scheduling was fairly simple. The door we selected is beautiful, and the installation was clean, quick, and painless. The only icing on the cake I would have loved is if they would have offered us the weather sealing accessories to complete the entire look. But we thank you for your help! Our Garage door looks great. We'll be sure to send pics once we clean up :)

I was embarrassed when I hit my old garage door on Friday. I had called other garage door companies and they could not come out for a few days. I called Precision and a representative (Aris) who came out that evening and made it possible to shut my jammed door. On Monday morning Luis showed up and worked very hard installing a beautiful new door. There service was professional and I will continue to use them if every necessary. I will recommend them to any friend. There Great!!!!

Very happy with the work KJ did on our garage door. He was schedule the work next day and arrived on time. He explained what needs to be done and how much it would cost (no different than what he quoted earlier). He finished the job on time. The garage door works perfectly now. Also very quiet since he lubricated the rollers too. Overall I would not hesitate to call KJ again. I recommend him.

I highly recommend Richard. He's skilled, thorough, and trustworthy. I hired him for to help with (1) the removal of scrap building material, (2) fixing a stuck front door, (3) changing an interior door to open from the opposite side, (4) expanding a doorway so I could install new appliances, and (5) helping me pickup furniture and put it together. He had great attention to detail, making suggestions about what options I had, and giving me great ideas that I hadn't considered. He's an incredibly hard worker, a perfectionist, and produces high quality work. I will be hiring him for more projects again in the future!

Melvin is a licensed and experienced installer of garage door opening systems. He put in a LiftMaster with Wifi, replacing our 25 year old Genie system. He showed up early and worked for two hours. He took our old unit away. And he left his business card near the button so that if there is any problem we can call him. His price was 150 to 200 dollars less than his competitors for the same unit. And he's really nice. We are glad to give him our business.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How do you fix a broken garage door?

Garage door problems don’t have to mean the end of the world. Garage door repair is typically a one-day process and can be done for only a few hundred dollars. Common garage door repair requests include fixing slow or erratic garage doors, addressing strange sounds coming from the garage door or motor, fixing cosmetic damage such as dents or scrapes, repairing broken doors that are stuck open or closed, and troubleshooting inoperable doors.

The two main garage door operating mechanisms are sectional roll-ups or tilt-ups. Garage door repair services can fix single-car, double-car or RV-height doors. Your garage door may be made of wood, steel, aluminum, masonite, vinyl, fiberglass or another material. The type of garage door repair you need really depends on the type of garage door you have and the issue at hand. Garage door repair pros often charge a flat service call fee to diagnose the problem and provide an estimate. For customers who choose to have the repair done, the service call fee may be applied to the first hour of labor (including time to make the diagnosis). If your garage door is under warranty, the repair may be free of charge.

Who repairs garage doors?

Garage door repair is a specialized job, which is typically handled by a garage door repair service. Professional garage door repair technicians can test or repair a garage door system and fix cosmetic blemishes on doors. Common requests include help with jammed or inoperable doors, slow or erratic doors, unusual sounds, dents or scrapes on the door, and general system testing. Garage door repair professionals can work on single-car, double-car and RV-size garage doors.

How much does it cost to get a garage door fixed?

The national average for garage door repair cost is between $80 and $110. Some of the factors that affect your garage door repair cost are the type of springs (most often torsion or extension), the size and weight of the door, and the door material. Many garage door pros will charge a service fee to visit your house and determine the problem. Often, the service fee includes a set amount of labor. One example of this is an $80 service fee that includes the first hour of work plus testing and inspecting your garage door and garage door opener, while another pro may charge $150 for the same standard service call.

Broken or jammed springs are a common problem. In one example, the starting price for spring repair was $99, while another pro’s cost started at $185. The $185 starting price included $40 for transportation costs, $60 for parts, and $85 per hour of labor. Professionals may charge extra for late-night garage door repair emergencies.

How much is it to replace a garage door panel?

Replacing a garage door panel can add significantly to the cost of a garage door repair. Panels run horizontally on sectional roll-up garage doors. They may be made of wood, vinyl, aluminum, fiberglass or steel. Garage door panels can become damaged from hail and other extreme weather, dents and dings, car accidents, and age. When deciding if you want to replace a garage door panel, it’s helpful to compare the potential repair cost to the cost of a new garage door. Panel replacement requires a pro with the proper tools as well as the new parts. With parts and labor you could be paying more than $500 for one new panel. In comparison, a new garage door may cost $800-$1,200 (on average) with installation. If there is a possibility your garage door was structurally compromised when the panel was damaged, have the pro assess whether it’s better to completely remove and replace the door, rails and framework to ensure your home’s safety. It may also be better to completely replace your door if it is severely rusted or dented; if the paint is peeling and fading; if the door model is outdated or you can’t find replacement panels; or if the panels or rails are structurally compromised.

How much should it cost to replace a garage door cable?

If your garage door is not opening or has become jammed, you may need to replace the garage door cables. Unless you have the proper tools and know-how, this is a job best left to a professional due to the weight of the garage door and the extreme tension of the springs. The cost of repair will vary depending on your location, the length of the cables you need, and the time it takes the pro to do the replacement.

From a big-box store, basic garage door cables can run between $8 and $20, depending on the product. Your pro may charge you a different cost if they provide the cables. Your cables may not need to be replaced if they have simply come off the track, but broken cables will need to be completely removed and replaced. In either instance, the pros will need to secure or take down the door; unwind the springs; reset or replace the rollers, cables, and drums; and then wind the springs once more. For example, a pro could reset cables that have come off the track for $129.99. The average national cost for a garage door repair specialist is $80 - $110 per hour and the typical cost to replace a broken garage door cable is anywhere from $130 to $200.
