Sergey was excellent. He was the lowest cost estimate we received, and he went above and beyond to provide great service (ontime, polite, flexible with extra requests). Clearly very knowledgeable, he quickly installed 3 overhead light fixtures (which included sanding one fixture to make it fit) and multiple dimmer switches. I would highly recommend him and hire him again. Thank you!

Kevin's a six-star handyman in a four-star world. He's come out to help me twice, on several different properties, and it's been a great experience each time. He's communicative about his arrival, does each job carefully, and explains all the options available and their pluses and minuses. I'm definitely going to keep working with Kevin, and I recommend the same for others in the Thumbtack community.

David was initially hired to fix a pocket door in my bath room, but turns out to be an all round to do few more projects I had. He did all of them to my satisfaction, without having hiring different handyman. David is a kind of one stop handyman to do everything. Hardworking too. Good job David. You're the one, I will look for my future projects. I strongly recommend David, to any one looking for a handyman. Thank you, David. Happy Holidays 👍

Brian was very professional and treated the job like his own. Although the scope evolved from the initial request, he made several trips and involved the right people from his team to make it happen. Some final finishing touches are remaining, for which he will be visiting again. We will use Brian for other handyman work as well.

I needed some paint and other hauling. I decided at the same time I would get a new kitchen faucet installed. Every aspect was flawless and pleasant. Good communication, fast response, first rate work, and a fraction of the price of others. I will use for my other handyman needs.

I recently used Hairston to help with the assembly of an Ikea bed. We had scheduled an appt for 5 pm as delivery was supposed to be between 1 and 5. Ikea ended up delivering the item at 11 am. I contacted Hairston about possibly moving our time up. He responded quickly and fortunately he was able to come earlier. He was on time and did a wonderful job assembling the bed in a timely manner. He picked up after himself, and left the area as clean as it was when he got there. I highly recommend Hairston, and will definitely be using him again in the future for our handyman needs!

Hired David, very honest in the quote and explained what needed to be done. I needed some baseboards replaced in my foyer, and the baseboards in the living room and dining room needed to be properly installed since my HOA sent their installers and they were terrible (HOA had to replace my hardwoods and the installers laid out the floor fine but baseboards looked terrible). He made a visit and inspected the areas, gave a quote and showed up at scheduled day/time, got to work and a few hours later the place was good to go....great job. I believe he is based in Southbay but covers the entire Bay Area. Any general carpentry/handyman type stuff, that you can't handle or just want to get done, I would recommend him.

For years we had relied on another well-regarded roofer to solve our roofing problems. However, when the time finally came to replace the entire roof, we chose San Jose Local Handyman because of their outstanding reputation and competitive price. San Jose Local Handyman more than met my expectations, from initial scheduling, to a consultation with Harry Lee to contracting, to financing, and most importantly to installation and follow-up. I would highly recommend San Jose Local Handyman!

It's rare to find a handyman as genuine as Fernando. He painted the entire interior walls of our house, including patching up walls in a couple of areas. I was on a tight schedule, and Fernando met it by working longer hours and bringing in more people so the work completed in time. He is honest, punctual, friendly and does a great job. You can see the pride he takes in his job. I'm glad I found him through Thumbtack.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What does a handyman do?

A handyman is a skilled laborer who provides basic home repairs. Anyone can call themselves a handyman, although most who do so are skilled with repairs and home projects. Reading reviews is a good way to determine their fitness for your job. The tasks a handyman can perform include assembling furniture, painting interiors and exteriors, repairing fences, repairing broken doors or replacing trim, hanging lights, hooking up appliances, and much more. Handymen may have flat fees for certain services, or charge an hourly rate. Handyman rates are often lower than those of a contractor, as they don’t have the same specialization. Some states have no limit on the work a handyman can perform, while others do. For example, California’s Building and Professions Code section 7048 (small operations) permits handymen to provide work similar to that of a contractor (floor installation, painting, etc.) provided the total cost of labor and materials does not exceed $500. A handyman is a great resource for minor home repairs at a lower cost than a licensed contractor, but for more complex projects, it pays to hire a specialized contractor. How do you find a good handyman?

Finding a good handyman can change your life. Within days, the endless list of insurmountable tasks that were either out of your skill range or impossible to fit into your busy schedule can be completed. If you know you want help but aren’t sure how to hire the right pro, ask these questions to find the right fit:

  • What is your work experience? If you are putting in a tile backsplash, you want someone experienced with the task, not someone who generally does painting and junk removal.
  • How much do you charge? Handymen often charge hourly rates that vary based on the complexity of the task they’re hired to do, as well as flat rates for standard jobs. Be clear about what they’ll charge before you hire them.
    • On that note, discuss payment details. It’s wise not to pay all the money up front, especially for larger projects. You may be able to pay a deposit for materials and pay the remainder upon project completion.
  • How long will the job take you to complete? If the handyman is as busy as you are and a fence repair is going to take months, you should probably find another qualified handyman for the job.

Read client reviews and follow up with references to make sure you’re choosing the right handyman for your projects. For more, check out our tips for smart hiring on Thumbtack.

Can a handyman do plumbing?

In some states, a handyman can provide plumbing services, but it may be in your best interest to call a plumber, particularly for issues more major than unclogging a drain or attaching a new sink. Hiring a plumber is important because mishandling your water and gas lines has the potential to do great damage to your home, your family’s health, or even the safety of your neighborhood. A handyman is not legally required to have any training or licensing in plumbing matters, while a licensed plumber has undergone years of education and on-the-job training. In some cases, homeowners insurance won’t cover damage caused by plumbing repair done by an unlicensed handyman.

According to the U.S. Department of Labor, most plumbers learn their trade through a four- or five-year apprenticeship with 2,000 hours of paid on-the-job training. They also receive classroom education including “safety, local plumbing codes and regulations, and blueprint reading. They also study mathematics, applied physics, and chemistry. After completing an apprenticeship program, plumbers … are considered to be journey workers, qualifying them to perform duties on their own,” according to the DOL. Licensed plumbers should do continuing education to keep abreast of safety and technology changes. Poor plumbing can lead to sewage backups, a flooded home or even natural gas leaks, so it’s best to leave it in the hands of a specialized professional.

How much does a handyman charge?

The national average rate for handyman jobs is $90-$160. A handyman performs general maintenance and repairs for residential and commercial properties. A handyman may charge a flat fee for standard services that take a predictable amount of time, such as installing a new appliance, as well as an hourly rate for larger projects such as digging out and replacing a rotted fence post. A cost-saving strategy when hiring a handyman is to bundle all the tasks you want them to do into one visit to make the most of any minimum service fee. Hourly rates for a handyman can average $50-$100 per hour. Pricing will depend on skill and experience required for the job, as well as regional labor rates. Here are a few examples of average handyman flat rates.

  • Attic ladder replacement: $150.
  • Toilet replacement: $75.
  • Ceiling fan and light fixtures: $75.
  • Faucet replacement: $125.
  • Garbage disposal: $75.
