I needed to move a huge, heavy glass-top desk from my apartment in SOMA to my office a few blocks away-- on foot. JP was great from the start. He arrived with a plan and got the job done in under 20 minutes! Every piece was handled with care, and the cost was much lower than quotes I got from big moving companies. I'd definitely book again.

This is my second time using this moving company. The movers are very nice and reliable. The company is also very responsive and accommodating with times. My second move (with same amount of belongings) took 2 hours longer than my first move with same amount of movers (3). They only have one of the movers assembling furniture which adds a lot of time to the clock. It seems as though they could do things a lot more efficiently to decrease time and $$ spent.

I had a very good experience. It was a small move. Most of the companies have minimum. MEAA movers did not charge a minimum. The prices were modest. Edgar and his crew were considerate, communicated in timely manner and did a really good job. Also i had made a mistake with the check. Edgar drove back so that i could correct it

Gomes is an honest professional who does a fantastic job and does what is best for the customer. I had a small leak in the toilet and ended up buying a new toilet for replacement. Throughout the buying process Gomes was very helpful in giving suggestions on what kinds of toilet to buy with model numbers etc. When it came time for replacement, he inspected the issue, pulled out the old toilet and told me that the old toilet was perfectly fine and that I'd be better off returning the new old, thus saving me money. He also offered to check back in a week should the leak return and then replace it for free should that happen. He was very professional, came on time, priced his service reasonably for the quality of work. I would definitely use his services again for other handy work around the house.

First and foremost, Scott is an outstanding person. We had some great conversations throughout the move. He was on time, had the necessary equipment, and demonstrated his expertise in the efficient and careful handling of my items. I used his services for a small move of some large, heavy boxes into a temporary housing unit, and will definitely be using his company for my larger household move in the near future!

Recently used Smart Move SF to move from a house to a condo. The condo required the move to be completed by a specific time, which most other moving companies said they wouldn't be able to do. Smart Move SF accomplished the mission - they moved us in time and they did an outstanding job. We previously used several other moving companies and we're happy we tried a new company this time because Rocket Moving was the best by far. Their 'all-inclusive' pricing was truly all-inclusive. There were no surprises, no haggling, no hidden fees. They were professional, showed up on time and packaged everything quite well (ie nothing was damaged). Highly recommended!

I hired Harp and his friend to move a couch and dresser for me. They were very efficient and Harp was easy to reach, but they put a big scratch in the side of the dresser while moving it. Still, I would probably hire Harp again for a small moving job and just ask him to be a bit more careful.

This is not the first time I am moving, I have availed the services of various moving companies. However this is my second time with A2B Movers. The previous time I moved; this was with A2B Movers and was the best ever. I wanted the same efficiency and obviously wanted to pay a budgeted amount. A2B was glad to assist me again and they were very honoured to have an old customer calling again. They were happy to accommodate me on the day I wanted to move. They also agreed to move first shift, which was just great.

They did a thorough job of cleaning out my storage shed of all trash and debris. They took longer then expected as they were using a smaller truck and probably underestimated the job. Still didn't ask for more money

I experienced excellent service with Leclair Moving moving company today, 8/10/18. To be honest, I had a list several moving companies, but when I called Leclair to inquire about pricing, I spoke with Horatio who was more than happy to answer all th questions I had. He was kind, professional, polite and patient with all my questions. When I met him in person (he was one of the movers) he was a delight to talk to you. Horatio was what made me choose Leclair moving company. It’s employees like these who make a difference just On the initial contact! If considering a move, Inhighly recommend Leclair Moving Services! Thank you, Horatio and Kevin, for a great move. You made it so easy! My daughter so appreciates it and so do I! Rebecca Dahlgren

Fixed my fence faster than expected and looks good. Very responsive to messages and payment was also easy through Zelle. One small issue was that they did not do enough cleaning and shards of wood were left on the grass, which isn't safe for kids.

They were friendly and did good job cleaning my house. They got to the corners and floors were mopped well. One tiny thing was that some things they moved were not put back to their places (trash bin, trinkets on shelf...) but overall I was satisfied.

I have worked with Kay Williams twice. Once on my moving and once on my office. She completely transformed my office filing with her work!! I now can find anything I want easily and have a proper way to file. It’s a huge relief!! On my moving day she was a life saver!!! I moved to a much smaller place and was wondering how I can fit my stuff specially in the kitchen. She was a miracle worker and fit everything so smoothly. I highly recommend her work if you need help with organizing or moving. Banafsheh

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What do moving companies do?

Moving companies provide a range of services to help you physically move out of one residence and move into a new place. But moving companies can do so much more than just haul your belongings across town in a truck. The national average for moving company prices ($250-$350 per hour) reflects the range of services provided. Here are examples of all the ways moving companies can help:

  • Packing: Moving companies can pack your belongings for you. They typically charge a flat rate for both the box and the labor to pack the box. The more time-consuming the belongings are to pack, the higher the cost per box. For example, books could be $5 per box, linens $10 per box, and fine china and glassware $18 per box.
  • Specialty moving: Safely move a baby grand piano, a oversize aquarium, or other specialty items with the help of pro movers.
  • Storage: Many moving companies can store your belongings while you wait for a new home to be remodeled or closing of your new home to be finalized. If you’re moving long-distance, they often provide short-term storage free for a specific length of time, and a set rate after that (such as $60 per square cubic foot of storage space used).
  • Long-distance moves: No need to rent a trailer and move your things; a long-distance moving company can haul your belongings across the country for you. Typically they charge by the cubic foot for moves, with prices based on your destination.
  • Unpacking: Moving companies can even unpack your belongings for you after they have moved them. This is not as common, and will definitely increase the price, but can be helpful if you’re not able to tackle this task yourself.

How much does a moving company charge per hour?

When you’re ready to make a major move, it’s time to research moving companies’ prices. A moving company may charge on average anywhere between $25 and $100 per hour, per worker, for moving services. The price will vary with regional labor rates, local cost to do business, and the level of service the movers are providing. Nationally, the average hourly rate for a moving company is $250-$350 per hour. This price includes a range of pricing, from all-in service with four or more movers on site to standard hourly rates for one or two movers. Other factors that affect moving companies’ prices are packing, stairs (or elevators), and distance. For a full-service move, you pay movers to pack your belongings for you. You may pay for the cost of the moving boxes and an hourly rate per worker, and there may be additional charges for packing fragile items. Stairs will also add to your moving prices. Lifting and carrying boxes and furniture up and down stairs takes more time and creates more physical labor for the workers. Moving companies may charge flat rates for flights of stairs, such as $50-$70 per flight. A moving company may also charge a one-time fee for moving things via elevator, such as $75-$100. If parking is not accessible in front of your home or apartment building, there may also be an additional fee for the added distance to carry your belongings to the truck.

How much does it cost for long-distance movers?

Long-distance movers transport your belongings across the country for you. No more renting a trailer and road-tripping from state to state with your entire house hitched to your bumper. Long-distance movers make the move happen so you can fly to your new home, suitcase in hand, and wait for your furniture to arrive. Nationally, the average price range for long-distance movers is $1,490-$2,230. The distance you are moving and the number of cubic feet the movers have to transport will both affect cost. Another factor in long-distance moving costs is whether you choose to pay for an exclusive move or a consolidated move.

In an exclusive move, which is more expensive, your belongings are the only cargo on the moving truck. The movers travel directly to your new house and deliver your belongings on a scheduled day. A consolidated move is more affordable because the movers transport your belongings along with those of other people, saving them time and gas — which means you save money. The downside is that your belongings typically arrive with a two-week delivery window rather than on a prescheduled day. Read reviews to make sure you can trust the company with your possessions to ensure a peaceful moving process.

How much does it cost to move a one-bedroom apartment across the country?

Professional movers can handle the hard work of moving your one-bedroom apartment across the country for you. You can determine what your move will cost by learning the rate your movers charge per cubic foot and how they factor distance into the total cost. Cross-country movers typically charge based on your belongings rather than apartment size because that determines how much work they will have to do. For example, a studio apartment that is crammed full of things will take more work and moving truck space than the contents of a three-bedroom apartment with very little furniture.

Cross-country movers may also have varying rates, depending on where in the country you are moving. For example, a company may charge $5 per cubic foot for consolidated moves along the East Coast and $6 per cubic foot for consolidated moves from the East Coast to the central states or the West Coast. A one-bedroom apartment costs approximately $1,500 to move across the country.

How much does it cost to move across the country?

The national average cost for hiring cross-country movers is $1,490-$2,220. A number of factors can affect the cost. One factor is the distance you want to move. For example, an East Coast-based moving company may charge $5 per cubic foot for consolidated moves along the East Coast and $6 per cubic foot for consolidated moves from the East Coast to the central states or the West Coast. Another factor is how many belongings you have. Most cross-country movers charge by the cubic foot.

The type of move you want is another consideration in cost. You can have your belongings moved exclusively and delivered on a set day, or you can opt for a consolidated move, which is less expensive. In a consolidated move your belongings are stored and transported with the goods of other customers who are moving to your general vicinity during the same general time frame as you. Your belongings should arrive within a one- to two-week window, rather than on a set day. If you want the cross-country movers to pack your belongings for you, the cost will also increase.
