Baja's Tacos & Catering did a wonderful job for us catering our wedding. Everyone has complimented us on the food the most. I loved how they set up quick and got things rolling. The only thing is they were late to set up but they pulled through in the end. They also used easy to store containers so we could easily put away the left overs. We were eating tacos for 2 days after the wedding. The pricing is great and the food tastes amazing. Thank you!!

We used Mr. Worldwide Catering for our wedding on June 6, 2015. Jose and his team did an outstanding job that went above and beyond my expectations. Our wedding was about 75 people and the salads were crunchy, kabobs (beef and chicken) were hot and moist, and my guests could not, I reiterate could not, stop talking about how amazing the food was. While many individuals think of wedding food as "blah", Jose made amazing food that impressed at an incredibly reasonable price point. For our wedding, we had fruit and veggie platters for the cocktail hour and for the main course we had: beef and chicken kabobs, hummus, roasted veggies, and a greek salad. He really worked with us on a menu that we wanted and delivered flawlessly. He plated and served both the appetizers and a meal for my husband and I so we could, shockingly, eat at our own wedding! My husband actually felt that what we ate on the wedding day was even better than our tasting! Not only did Jose offer incredible food at a reasonable price point, he was often in contact with my coordinator to ensure that everything flowed smoothly. I highly recommend Jose and his team. He was prompt, delivered everything he said and more, reasonable, personable, and everything I desired in a caterer.

Lillian was great for our small wedding. The poke was on par with something you might find a Roy's, definitely some of the best I've had on the mainland. The lamb chop, sea bass, chicken, basically everything was incredible. All the guests loved the food. It's good luck for our marriage going forward that we had such good food on our wedding day!

I highly recommend Chef Mumsie for a wedding that needs catering or for any event that involves great food and wonderful service. It is hard to describe the quality of good food other than to say that it was delicious and all the guests were raving about it. Appetizers included incredible onion pastry puffs that were the talk of more than one conversation I had that night. Salad was also a big hit, not something one usually expects to say about salad. The entree was talked, posted, and blogged about. Beautiful flatware and table settings were used, and the service was light-footed, courteous, and professional. We felt we were in a 5-star hotel, not our own backyard (which is where we actually were). Aside from all this, I want to mention how impressed we were with the hard work that was so evident. Chef Mumsie's staff was present from 2pm on toward 11pm and never stopped moving for a second. We were promised that we would not have to worry about a single event during the day and that was exactly what happened. Without even realizing that we had left so much in the hands of our caterers, we passed the night catching up with old friends, connecting people, taking photos, and meeting each other's friends from far off -- never once did we have to stop to check up on any details of any kind. Chef Mumsie seemed to be in eight places at once at any moment, and everything took care of itself as if by magic. There were no hidden charges, unexpected twists, or demands for attention. We are very impressed and grateful for their efforts in feeding and satisfying 80+ people in a somewhat confined space -- done with grace, speed, and invisibility. .. and deliciousness!

Kieth did an outstanding job in catering my wife's 80th birthday party for a family group of 12. It was also our 61st anniversary, so it really was a special night for all of us and the dinner was delightful and cooked to perfection.

Our plans to have our wedding meal prepared by our favorite restaurant fell thru 3 weeks before our wedding. I knew Christine Mcmaster as an excellent cook and had been to 2 private dinners catered by her. Quite anxious, I called her and she put me at ease with her assurances and suggestions to take my time and figure out what we would really like. Great advice! We chose Mediterranean food. Together with Chris we quickly settled on a menu. There were so many details but she handled it all from overseeing the table setting, shopping, deliveries and arranging table display. It was amazing I actually could relax. The meal was sumptuous elegantly prepared and plated all by Chris and her kitchen staff. Our dinner menu was: A simple greek salad, hummus, tzatziki, baba ganoush, roasted vegetables, flat bread Then Shawarma lamb, roasted chickens, and feta rice w/ pistachios. There were 35 people at the wedding meal and all the courses were on time and beautifully plated. The kitchen was quiet and when I went in everyone was smiling and extremely busy. Chris ran the kitchen in a quiet organized way that was contagious to all who worked there. Truly an amazing woman. Her sense of elegance shined thru both in the delicious food and its presentation. My husband and I will have lasting memories of Christine and how she stepped in and played an integral part in helping create our dream wedding. I highly recommend you have her cater any function. All you have to do is relax and enjoy it.

We used BAPS! catering for our annual Halloween party for about 100 people. The food was AMAZING and a crowd pleaser. The prices were reasonable and Brad was professional and responsive; super helpful. They did drop-off service and set it up with everything we needed and extra supplies and food to replenish as things ran out. Would use them again and highly recommend them.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How do you find a good caterer?

Reviews, interviews and menu tastings will help you find the right catering choice for your big day. Start by screening possible wedding caterers based on past reviews. If a caterer you are interested in has a review that concerns you, ask them about it; how they respond will be very telling. Next, ask about their availability for your wedding date.

If the wedding caterer is available on your date, it’s time to talk about menus and prices. Be clear about what your maximum budget is find out what choices this will allow you. Caterers may custom-create a menu for your event, or they may have menu templates within different price ranges that can guide your decision. A clear budget gives the caterer clear parameters within which to work and offer creative suggestions. Schedule a menu tasting to confirm you love your wedding menu. Once you have a menu and date, and have paid a deposit to reserve the caterer’s services, confirm additional details including when the food will be delivered to the site, what kind of service will be provided, how many servers will be onsite and for how long, and who is responsible for setup and cleanup. The more specific your contract, the fewer worries you’ll have on your wedding day. Get more smart hiring tips here.

Do you tip a wedding caterer?

Tipping 15 percent to 20 percent on a $3,000 catering bill can feel daunting — especially in light of all the other costs of throwing a wedding — but tipping your wedding caterer is standard practice. Be sure to ask your caterer about their specific policies. Many catering companies include gratuity as a line item on their bill. If tipping is not automatically included in your total, a good approach is to tip all the people involved the day of the event rather than paying one lump sum to the catering company. For each server and bartender, you can tip $20-$50, depending on how long they were onsite and whether they did exceptional work. You can also tip the chef; experts suggest $50. It’s also a good idea to tip the catering manager, the point-of-contact person who keeps the catering service running smoothly the day of your wedding, ensures all the food looks beautiful and is plentiful, and resolves any mishaps. Industry pros recommend tipping the catering manager $100-$200. If gratuity is not included and you’re tipping individuals, set aside $200-$500 in cash to be safe.

How much does wedding catering cost per person?

Wedding catering costs will always vary based on the number of guests you’re inviting, the menu you want to serve, and the way the food will be served to your guests. As you interview wedding catering companies, you’ll be presented with a cost per person for various menus. On the low end, wedding catering may cost approximately $15-$18 per person. This would include prepared food only, with no setup or service of any kind. The starting price for a simple buffet meal with minimal service typically averages $22 per person. Opting for the same menu with all organic ingredients could raise your costs to about $33 per person. A moderately upscale menu (finer ingredients, more elaborate presentation) could range from $24 to $34 per person. High-end wedding catering cost truly has no limit. Lobster, filet mignon, specialty seafood, organic ingredients — menu choices like these can boost your cost per person up to $150 and more.

What should you look for in a caterer?

A delicious meal is a critical element of a successful wedding, with happy guests fondly remembering your fabulous wedding food. The right caterer for you will be:

  • Available: Even the best caterer is no good if they aren’t available on your wedding date. Ask early before you get your heart set on someone.
  • Affordable for you: Find a caterer that you can afford. Having a spending plan ahead of time will mean you won’t overspend on food.
  • A good personality fit: Wedding planning is stressful, so work with someone that you can get along with and communicate with easily.
  • Experienced and recommended: Ensure the company has a proven track record with events of your size and the references to back it up.
  • Transparent about money: Steer clear of shady pricing. Find a caterer who is very clear about costs and is happy to talk you through budgets and pricing options.
  • Transparent about food: Find someone who is clear about where they source their food from and where it is prepared.

How do you serve food at a wedding?

Food service at your wedding will affect your catering costs and influence the atmosphere of the reception. Buffet style is more informal; plated meals are a bit fancier; family style encourages sharing. Read about the different food service styles to select your preferred wedding catering choice.

  • Buffet: Caterers can drop off prepared foods for a DIY and budget-friendly buffet option where you set everything up and food is entirely self-service. For a fuller-service buffet, the caterers set up food, oversee the buffet throughout the event, and clean up afterwards. For food only, prices per person might average $16-$18, while a service buffet may start around $20-$22 per person. Adding food stations can increase per-person costs by at least $3-$5.
  • Family style: Servers bring large platters of food to guest tables in courses. It’s less formal (and less expensive) than a plated meal, but more formal and higher-cost than a buffet. You’ll need large tables to accommodate the platters, so plan accordingly when renting furniture for the event.
  • Plated: A plated event is a formal dining experience; waitstaff serve your seated guests for each course, fill their drinks, and attend to them throughout the dinner. A plated dinner is typically the most expensive option for both food and service.
  • Food trucks: Similar to buffets, with food trucks your guests get their own food and bring it to their table. A food truck gives a relaxed and playful vibe to your reception.
  • Cocktail reception: If you don’t want a formal seated dinner, you can opt for a wide assortment of passed appetizers at an extended cocktail hour reception.
