We have had several new lights lying around waiting to be installed and Arisel and his co-worker were able to come over within a few days notice and take care of our home projects. They were especially great at dealing with some of the challenges that come with updating an older home. We had new shelving and a light installed in our laundry room (required removal of the previous light and re-positioning of the wiring). Lights also installed in our hallway and outdoor patios along with installation of a new doorbell and trim to our garage exterior. Everything looks good but will require some paint touch up which we plan to diy.

One of the first things Gleo told me was that he had a regular job and would be able to work on weekends. He did two jobs for me at a rental. One was installing a medicine cabinet and interior lock. He did not complete repair of drywall repair by the cabinet. The other job was installation of a security door. He installed the medicine cabinet, lock and security door in a good manner. He did not complete an addition to the bottom of the security door. He was pleasant, on time, cleaned up well, and cooperative but for the incomplete items. I wanted him to paint a bath in S.F. at another rental but, he did not give me an estimate (perhaps too far away). Manelis Properties

Rolando's communication was excellent, and he showed up right on time. More importantly he was great at presenting and explaining the pros and cons of multiple potential solutions for the job, and completed the work efficiently and professionally. My experience with Rolando was excellent overall, and I will deffinitely be working with him again in the future.

I really appreciate Luis’s knowledge and expertise. He has done a few projects for our 1880’s Victorian that require a good working knowledge. He’s roped double sash windows and rebuild my front porch. I have more projects waiting for him !

Alex did a full rebuild of my 20 year old existing porch. All Azek decking, rails, etc, including 2 sets of stairs, new posts, footings, and concrete slabs. 1st class job, could not have been happier. He finished on time (really!), and was right on budget. He came in 2 thousand dollars less than the next lowest comparable bid, and several thousand less than some. . There was close to zero wasted materials/returns. He adjusted on the fly, was creative, and showed excellent attention to detail. I will use him again, and will gladly recommend him to anyone.

Mr. Gorostiza did a fully professional job for us on our stained front-porch. Unsure himself if the power-washing would work, we discussed it without a pushy sales job, and decided to go ahead. We are glad we did, and would hire Joe again for any handyman job in the future. Timothy Vogel

We had water collected at our front porch and dripped down through to the crawlspace foundation, resulting in damaged structural woods. Victor came over to inspect the damage (on time! which I appreciate since I took time off work to take care of this), gave us a very reasonable quote and walked us through his plan to fix it. He was very thorough in his work, fix all the damages (even the ones in the corner that were difficult to reach), and within the time that he estimated. We are planning to do more house projects with him!

Nate built and replaced a railing structure for a porch of my home. The replacement was built to a much better quality than the one it replaced. He is extremely methodical and consciences in his work, and the cost is his labor was fair and reasonable. I would seek out his labor if a future repair is needed or project comes about.

Larry has been doing work on my house and yard for years. He’s great to work with! He friendly, reliable, punctual, and does quality work for a fair price. He always helps us problem-solve issues and comes up with great solutions. He’s done quite a variety of jobs for us including: replacing porch steps, installing flooring in the attic, rat-proofing our cellar, installing tile around the bathroom sink, and battling our blackberry bushes. Honestly, I don’t know what I’d do without him. I highly recommend Larry!

Mark was wonderful to work with. He responded quickly to messages on Thumbtack and via text. He was punctual and flexible with our schedule. He walked through everything with us, listened to our concerns and needs, and worked with us to stay within our budget and timing, and sequenced projects accordingly. He also has a great sense of humor and was pleasant to talk with. We were very happy with his work and the work of the professionals he worked with for electrical, plumbing, and painting. The work that was done: removal and replacement of 2 windows, walls, and flooring where there was water damage, wood rot, and the start of mold; adding a door to access the space under the front stairs and creating a storage space with tiled floor and drywall; waterproofing / sealing the brick of our front steps and porch; removing carpeting and laminate flooring and installation of new laminate flooring; installing siding on the front of our house and painting of the front of the house (2 stories); texturizing and painting walls; installing a wet bar / kitchenette; replacing shower pan, tile, and shower door; removal of tree and bushes in front yard. I think that’s everything. We highly recommend Mark and would happily work with him again.

I had him hang some signs on my porch. He finished the project quickly and efficiently. I would recommend him. I also had the chance to look at some of the refurbished furniture he's done. I wish I had the room in my house for it. Definitely worth a look if you're in the market.

    Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

Who is a carpenter and what do they do?

Carpenters are skilled craftsmen who build things out of wood. Depending on what the carpenter builds, they may be referred to by various names. A framer is a carpenter who puts up the framing on a house. A trim or finish carpenter installs the finishing touches of prefabricated or custom trim and detail work once a house has been built and the walls are up. A furniture maker or woodworker builds furniture — such as tables, beds and dressers — out of wood. A cabinetmaker is a carpenter who builds custom and semi-custom wood cabinets. If you’re having a home built or remodeled, your general contractor will either provide or subcontract the carpentry work for the framing, cabinets and trim. You can hire a carpenter directly to update the trim in your home, build you a piece of custom furniture, or repair or replace your wood cabinets.

    Do carpenters build houses?

Carpenters are trained to work with wood. That means that any part of your home that is built of wood is very likely to involve a carpenter. Framing carpenters will put up the wood that makes up the bones of your home. If you’re having a wood floor installed, it may be done by a carpenter — although being a carpenter is not a requirement to install flooring. Trim, baseboards, wainscoting and any other detail work is typically installed by a finish carpenter. The wood boxes of custom cabinets will be built and installed by a carpenter.

Although all of these components in your new or remodeled home are built by carpenters who specialize in building things with wood, a general contractor typically oversees construction of the entire house. If the general contractor is also a carpenter skilled in all these areas, they may well construct your entire home. More often, the general contractor subcontracts out the various building stages to different individuals, including carpenters.

Hire skilled professionals for absolutely everything.
