Simply excellent. Sergey is easily the most professional handyman I've ever encountered. Deserves 6 stars if I could. Showed up early, took his shoes off before coming inside, knew exactly what to do after checking out the hardware & did it amazingly fast (~30mins start to finish)...he even caught the working dust with the instruction sheet so there was no mess from the drill. Can't get much better than that! Do yourself a favor & hire Sergey, you won't regret it.

K&M Handyman Services did a great job on a difficult plumbing situation. Kevin was polite, funny, and very professional. He worked diligently on the complicated problem. He kept me informed throughout his time working on the blockage. He explained clearly what was going on, and what was the next step and why. This was one of the best experiences that I have had with a professional in this industry. Not only did he do a great job, but was also very fair in his pricing. I would highly recommend Kevin to anyone who has a plumbing partner. He has my business, if I would ever have any plumbing problem again. Ron

David came to fix a door that wasn't latching correctly to the strike plate. He was the second handyman I hired after the first one was unable to finish or complete the job to my satisfaction. David went above and beyond to make sure the door worked correctly and made me feel at ease.

I needed door bolts installed into my doors. The cuts in the doors where measure out correctly and placed perfectly. The latch on the opposite door was perfectly positioned and the door latches in a perfect fit. Harp is punctual and professional. He introduces himself, gets to work quickly. He is meticulous about getting the woodwork perfect and astheticallly pleasing to the eye. Unlike every other handyman I called, Harp answers the phone or will call back within an hour or two. He is available, even into the late hours of the evening. He was available to help me with a 24-48 hour notice. Every other handyman I called either didn't return the call, called back several days later or just outright not available for several weeks out. His prices are reasonable. He will give you an estimate prior to the job and will keep that promised price even if the job becomes difficult. He is also generous. Although he was hired to install doorbolts, he fixed a problem that I had with my door knobs just because he wanted everything to look uniform. Harp is available for work, professional, and does really good work. I will be hiring him again.

Brian was very professional and treated the job like his own. Although the scope evolved from the initial request, he made several trips and involved the right people from his team to make it happen. Some final finishing touches are remaining, for which he will be visiting again. We will use Brian for other handyman work as well.

I'm a real person, I work at a tech startup in SF, and just having moved to a new part of the city - didn't feel like assembling furniture AND having to unpack. I had some NON-IKEA, but similar, furniture that needed to be assembled. I had looked at some other popular task sites but they were showing me candidates that didn't exactly look "handyman-capable", and were conveniently charging ridiculous hourly rates. That's when I searched another local list and found Chao's post for "handyman services"; we easily negotiated a fair arrangement and he was able to come that SAME DAY. I was initially nervous waiting for him to arrive but when Chao showed up - I felt like I won the lottery. He brought his own tools and didn't want to waste time on small talk. THIS GUY IS SERIOUSLY A PROFESSIONAL HANDYMAN, & FURNITURE ASSEMBLY SUBJECT MATTER EXPERT. Within his first 5 minutes on site, He took that first furniture box with 1000 pieces and had methodically and systematically placed them in an orderly fashion and quickly began assembly -- paying strict accordance to instructions detail. WHEN CHAO WAS DONE, THERE WERE NO EXTRA OR MISSING PIECES!!! And, even though this furniture was "cheap", it was assembled as best as possible. Chao is an expert. I had some difficult space constraints that he had to work within but he just adapted. He had lots of tricks too, like unfolding the packaging box to protect my floor. Using a piece of cardboard to protect the furniture during hammer-assembly steps, etc... This guy is PROFESSIONAL and I highly recommend him.

Fixed my fence faster than expected and looks good. Very responsive to messages and payment was also easy through Zelle. One small issue was that they did not do enough cleaning and shards of wood were left on the grass, which isn't safe for kids.

I recently used Hairston to help with the assembly of an Ikea bed. We had scheduled an appt for 5 pm as delivery was supposed to be between 1 and 5. Ikea ended up delivering the item at 11 am. I contacted Hairston about possibly moving our time up. He responded quickly and fortunately he was able to come earlier. He was on time and did a wonderful job assembling the bed in a timely manner. He picked up after himself, and left the area as clean as it was when he got there. I highly recommend Hairston, and will definitely be using him again in the future for our handyman needs!

I appreciate his diligence and integrity! He installed new laundry room cabinets and worked on a minor cabinet door alignment issue until I was satisfied. Installed a new toilet, bathroom vanity light and a 16 lb. dining room flush-mount light. When I had a issue with the new toilet he corrected it immediately. He's now my go-to handyman and I highly recommend him to anyone looking for a handyman!

Hired David, very honest in the quote and explained what needed to be done. I needed some baseboards replaced in my foyer, and the baseboards in the living room and dining room needed to be properly installed since my HOA sent their installers and they were terrible (HOA had to replace my hardwoods and the installers laid out the floor fine but baseboards looked terrible). He made a visit and inspected the areas, gave a quote and showed up at scheduled day/time, got to work and a few hours later the place was good to go....great job. I believe he is based in Southbay but covers the entire Bay Area. Any general carpentry/handyman type stuff, that you can't handle or just want to get done, I would recommend him.

It's rare to find a handyman as genuine as Fernando. He painted the entire interior walls of our house, including patching up walls in a couple of areas. I was on a tight schedule, and Fernando met it by working longer hours and bringing in more people so the work completed in time. He is honest, punctual, friendly and does a great job. You can see the pride he takes in his job. I'm glad I found him through Thumbtack.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How do you find a good handyman?

Finding a good handyman can change your life. Within days, the endless list of insurmountable tasks that were either out of your skill range or impossible to fit into your busy schedule can be completed. If you know you want help but aren’t sure how to hire the right pro, ask these questions to find the right fit:

  • What is your work experience? If you are putting in a tile backsplash, you want someone experienced with the task, not someone who generally does painting and junk removal.
  • How much do you charge? Handymen often charge hourly rates that vary based on the complexity of the task they’re hired to do, as well as flat rates for standard jobs. Be clear about what they’ll charge before you hire them.
    • On that note, discuss payment details. It’s wise not to pay all the money up front, especially for larger projects. You may be able to pay a deposit for materials and pay the remainder upon project completion.
  • How long will the job take you to complete? If the handyman is as busy as you are and a fence repair is going to take months, you should probably find another qualified handyman for the job.

Read client reviews and follow up with references to make sure you’re choosing the right handyman for your projects. For more, check out our tips for smart hiring on Thumbtack.

What does a handyman do?

A handyman is a skilled laborer who provides basic home repairs. Anyone can call themselves a handyman, although most who do so are skilled with repairs and home projects. Reading reviews is a good way to determine their fitness for your job. The tasks a handyman can perform include assembling furniture, painting interiors and exteriors, repairing fences, repairing broken doors or replacing trim, hanging lights, hooking up appliances, and much more. Handymen may have flat fees for certain services, or charge an hourly rate. Handyman rates are often lower than those of a contractor, as they don’t have the same specialization. Some states have no limit on the work a handyman can perform, while others do. For example, California’s Building and Professions Code section 7048 (small operations) permits handymen to provide work similar to that of a contractor (floor installation, painting, etc.) provided the total cost of labor and materials does not exceed $500. A handyman is a great resource for minor home repairs at a lower cost than a licensed contractor, but for more complex projects, it pays to hire a specialized contractor. Fore more, check out our tips for smart hiring on Thumbtack.

Can a handyman do plumbing?

In some states, a handyman can provide plumbing services, but it may be in your best interest to call a plumber, particularly for issues more major than unclogging a drain or attaching a new sink. Hiring a plumber is important because mishandling your water and gas lines has the potential to do great damage to your home, your family’s health, or even the safety of your neighborhood. A handyman is not legally required to have any training or licensing in plumbing matters, while a licensed plumber has undergone years of education and on-the-job training. In some cases, homeowners insurance won’t cover damage caused by plumbing repair done by an unlicensed handyman.

According to the U.S. Department of Labor, most plumbers learn their trade through a four- or five-year apprenticeship with 2,000 hours of paid on-the-job training. They also receive classroom education including “safety, local plumbing codes and regulations, and blueprint reading. They also study mathematics, applied physics, and chemistry. After completing an apprenticeship program, plumbers … are considered to be journey workers, qualifying them to perform duties on their own,” according to the DOL. Licensed plumbers should do continuing education to keep abreast of safety and technology changes. Poor plumbing can lead to sewage backups, a flooded home or even natural gas leaks, so it’s best to leave it in the hands of a specialized professional.

How much does a handyman charge?

The national average rate for handyman jobs is $90-$160. A handyman performs general maintenance and repairs for residential and commercial properties. A handyman may charge a flat fee for standard services that take a predictable amount of time, such as installing a new appliance, as well as an hourly rate for larger projects such as digging out and replacing a rotted fence post. A cost-saving strategy when hiring a handyman is to bundle all the tasks you want them to do into one visit to make the most of any minimum service fee. Hourly rates for a handyman can average $50-$100 per hour. Pricing will depend on skill and experience required for the job, as well as regional labor rates. Here are a few examples of average handyman flat rates.

  • Attic ladder replacement: $150.
  • Toilet replacement: $75.
  • Ceiling fan and light fixtures: $75.
  • Faucet replacement: $125.
  • Garbage disposal: $75.
