If your looking for a tutor who not only gets results, but is also someone who generally cares for their students, than let me introduce you to Carl. My son is currently having difficulties in geometry. I had used thumbtack in the past for other projects and tried to see if I could find a math tutor on their site. Sure enough, we found Carl. In the short time that Carl has been working with my son, I have seen a marked improvement not only in my sons grades, but also in my sons work ethic. Carl has brought an enthusiasm and fresh approach to teaching my son math. Carl is flexible with regards to scheduling and if necessary, always spends more time with my son than just the allotted hour. He truly doesn’t want to leave until he’s sure my son understand whatever concept they happen to be going over. He really does go the extra mile for his students. I sincerely can’t recommend Carl’s services more. If there is a subject that you or someone you know needs help with, Carl is someone who will take the time and get you where you want to be.

Daniel was very professional and went above and beyond to give the tutoring help I needed in a somewhat obscure math topic, which included him spending time researching and working through the problems before the tutoring session to ensure that he could answer all of my questions. I would recommend Daniel to anyone looking for a quality math tutor who invests himself in your success. Thanks again for all the help Daniel!!

I would highly recommend this service, especially Bri, if you're looking for any kind of tutoring--standardized test or school subject. Thank you, Bri!

Reza was my math tutor for several months and my experience with him was very positive! I consider myself very weak in math and Reza was able to explain college math to me so well that I got my first ever A from math in the following course! I have never had anything better than C from math, so this speaks for itself. I recommend Reza highly to anyone who is looking for a good and caring tutor or teacher.

Rachel is a fantastic and brilliant math tutor. I hadn't taken a math class in about 23 years and wanted to pass my placement exam out of intermediate algebra to go directly into statistics. I knew I could recall a lot of the concepts if I had a good guide to help me quickly get an understanding. We met at various libraries for our sessions depending on where I was working on those days and times. She was patient, quickly understood without completely disregarding my seemingly far fetched goals, and helped me get through any challenging areas in a way that made it very clear. She has a way of making math "fun and sweet" like I had never previously realized it could be/is. I had 3 sessions with her (2 hrs, 3 hrs, 2 hrs) over the course of one week and passed my test by that Friday. When I started in my statistics class, I recommended her to anyone that was anticipating having any trouble with the class. If I have any trouble with math classes in the future, I know exactly who to call; she is the best! I'm so grateful to Rachel for her support and encouragement.

I had really needed a tutor for College Calculus I, and was lost somewhere in the second chapter. I found Club Z, and contacted Mary Beth. She knew exactly which tutor I needed, and I met with him twice a week for an entire semester. I had no teacher, since this was an online course, and Mike, my tutor, had no problem teaching me the material since he knew it very well already, and I ended up getting a great grade in a class that I thought was hopeless. Highly recommend Club Z for any math class up to (and beyond) college level math.

Cindy is an absolute visionary. I am a senior in high school, and I met Cindy a few months before I began this school year. My strengths academically are mainly in reading, writing, social studies, and philosophy, but Cindy has enhanced my knowledge and appreciation for mathematics, science, and my capabilities in problem solving as a whole. When I first met Cindy, I was in desperate need of a math tutor, but what I received was more than I could have ever imagined. Aside from her outstanding mathematical capabilities, Cindy has served as my mentor, ultimate problem solver, entrepreneurial guru, and ultimate inspiration throughout my college prep and application process. As a fellow performer, and actress, Cindy also has helped me explore my passion for theatre, and expand it to become a flourishing intrigue with anthropology, psychology, and motivational speaking. She is literally the reason that I am now travelling as a motivational speaker/ Body Positive facilitator to youth, ranging from middle school to high school. In offering her invaluable time, ambitious mindset, and incredibly compassionate demeanor, she has allowed me to find my true passions, and encourage others to do the same. Furthermore, Cindy is beyond this world amazing. Whether to call her an angel, an oracle, a goddess, a reincarnated Albert Einstein, or any other form of awe, I am not worthy to concretely say. However, I can attest that Cindy has absolutely changed my vision for myself and the world around me, my societal views and aspirations, as well as having enhanced my mathematical and test taking capabilities. Truly, Cindy is the most wonderful, kind, creative, talented, and intelligent essence, one could ever hope to meet or aspire to become.

I had a very tight schedule and a very bad grade in my College Algebra class. I submitted a request for a math tutor through Thumbtack and within minutes Dario and I were coordinating our first appointment. Met with Dario the next day and again over the weekend. He is extremely knowledgeable, professional and came well prepared to tackle the concepts I was struggling with. His willingness to be flexible with availability was clutch. Through no fault of Dario, I continue to struggle in my class but my tutoring with him really helped me identify my weaknesses and where I needed remediation. It got me asking the right questions in class. Would definitely hire Dario again.

Julian is ABSOLUTELY OUTSTANDING! He has been with us for close to two years now and works with both of my daughters three times a week and is always positive, punctual, and one of the brightest tutors my girls have worked with over the years. He is so versatile and even though he specializes in mathematics he is able to tutor in any subject and continues to help in anyway he can. He emails teachers to make sure my girls are ahead, relates to their peers and has truly become part of our family since he started with us when he graduated from UCLA. We are so lucky to have him and recommend him to anyone who is in need of an awesome tutor!

If you want the best of the best, Todd Frost is the tutor to hire. My sixteen year old son has been struggling with math since middle school. I have literally spent thousand of dollars on tutoring programs that didn't work. I wish I would have found Todd back then, but better late than never. Thanks to Todd, my son is now on track and feels more confident in his current Geometry class.

Sol helped my daughter with geometry, algebra II and trig. He reviewed her material prior to their meetings and was well equipped to answer her questions. My daughter found him to be sweet and easy to work with. Prior to exams, he quickly helped her understand concepts that were confusing. I highly recommend him for advanced math...any math really!

My experience with Michael has been outstanding. He's prompt, punctual, and knowledgeable about mathematics and other "common sense" areas. He's been able to thoroughly explain, both verbally and written, different mechanisms and operations of mathematics, and how to work math problems. The rate is reasonable- especially because he also work with you "after hours" and initiate appropriate assignments to further you knowledge. After you complete such assignments, he goes over them with you, and ensure to answer all questions. I highly recommend Michael, and think he would be a great tutor for any person looking enhance their mathematical skills.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How do you find a good math tutor?

Math home tutors are available for any age student, from elementary school to postgraduate studies. Rates will vary based on the tutor’s background, education and experience. To find a good math tutor, first determine your learning goals. Do you need help understanding and completing homework assignments? Are you preparing for the math portion of a standardized test? Next, read reviews from current and former students. Find someone with proven success helping students achieve their goals. If you want help on an ongoing basis, decide what your budget is and identify the tutors who fall within your range. Ask if there are additional fees for travel, as some home math tutors include travel costs in their rates and others charge extra. Ask about session length and the tutor’s teaching style, and whether they also offer online sessions or group sessions. Finally, schedule a single session with each of the math tutors you think are best to see who is the best fit.

How much do math tutors cost?

Math is a subject that’s challenging for many students. Fortunately, home math tutors can help students excel in math by working with them in focused one-on-one tutoring sessions. The cost for math tutors varies based on the type of math, the expertise and experience of the tutor, and geographic location. Pricing may range between $40 and $100 per hour, depending on the math subject. As a rule, the more complex the subject matter, the more the math tutor will charge for the lessons. The cost reflects the math tutor’s advanced studies and the work required for them to be able to teach on the subject. Frequency can also affect costs. Students can buy packages of lessons for a lower cost per session than buying individually. Nationally, the average hourly rate for a geometry home tutor is $50-$60. The national average rate for an algebra home tutor is $40-$50 per hour. For generalized math tutors, the national average ranges between $40 and $50 per hour. More intensive standardized test prep studies and math tutoring average $70-$100 per hour.

How much does home tutoring cost?

Investing in home tutoring is an investment in your child’s future. Home tutors work one on one with your child to address their challenge areas and provide room for intellectual growth that may not happen in a busy classroom. The cost of home tutors depends on multiple factors including where you live, the tutor’s background and education, the subject matter, and how often the tutor comes. Test prep home tutoring is typically more expensive than single-subject tutoring. Here are some examples of average tutoring costs:

  • National average cost for an algebra home tutor: $40-$50 per hour.
  • National average cost for a French home tutor: $30-$50 per hour.
  • National average cost for a geometry home tutor: $50-$60 per hour.
  • National average cost for a math home tutor: $40-$50 per hour.
  • National average cost for reading and writing home tutor: $40-$60 per hour.
  • National average cost for an SAT home tutor: $70 per hour.
  • National average cost for an ACT home tutor: $70-$100 per hour.
