We would highly recommend Daniel to anyone who needs an outstanding bar services. Every guest at our party complemented his great bartending and social skills and sure to book his services at their events. Daniel was also very good with kids and provided great variety of non alcoholic cocktails, kids still rave about.

My sister told me that "no one remembers the food at a weddings!" However after she had the food of Chef Pete she told my mom, "I was wrong- because people will definitely remember THIS dinner!" Everyone was commenting on how good the food was! We even had a diverse range of dietary restrictions in the crowd. Pete made me feel confident in his catering services from day 1. He was great about calling on the phone and then following up with email for final quote. The food was exceptional especially for a wedding of 80 people! Pete also had great staff who everyone commented on. They had matching outfits and looked very professional. Definitely hire Pete Coleman if you want the wedding dinner of your dreams. Oh and this was all the week of the fires and he was super flexible about last minute changes to our venue and to our date. He was seriously the best. Thank you Chef Pete!

This was my first experience ordering catering service so I wasn't sure what to expect. Debbie did a great job for our group. The food was delicious and plentiful. Debbie worked with some special criteria to make the deliveries to us but was on time and well prepared. Thank you Debbie for the great food and all your hard work!

I wish I could Give 10 stars! Paul was absolutely amazing! My father was in the hospital with cancer complications and Paul came to see us all the way in Sacramento near the hospital at like 8:00 at night to meet with us, when we couldn’t make it out to meet him. He made sure I didnt have to worry about anything while going through this very difficult time. And the FOOD!! Wow, it over exceeded our expectations! It was delicious and there was plenty for everyone! People even had seconds. Our wedding was over a month ago and we STILL have people talking about the food! We highly recommend Nitro BBQ! Thank you Paul!!

Deb makes the most amazing quiche and is such a pleasure to work with. I worked with her when she prepared quiches for our Christmas party at our home. She takes such pride in her quiches and her full service catering and has developed this into an outstanding business. I would recommend her to cater your next event and assure anyone that she delivers the best quiches and excellent services along with her great smiles and laughs.

I've known Grace for many years. I have been over to her house for home cooked meals that were truly gourmet, and delicious. She also prepared some food and sold it from her home. On the level of catering for large parties, I went to our friend Dave's party last month were Grace did the catering. The food was flawless, delicious, with great presentation, and great variety. I strongly recommend Grace for catering your events.

EVERYONE loved the cocktails!! And David! He's friendly, knowledge and can make you a drink consisting of top quality ingredients and the perfect flavor profile based on what you tell him you're looking for. His bar tending services exceeded expectations on all levels. We hope to have him help us again. Our friends were all impressed - so much so they went for cocktails over wine! We provided the ingredients.

Michelle put together an amazing 4-day spread for our company's off-site in South Lake Tahoe. Every meal was executed with precision, care, and fresh seasonal ingredients -- there's nothing more you could ask for. We loved Michelle's warm personality and she was a pleasure to chat with between meals and throughout service. The highlight of our trip were our meal times and we were pleasantly surprised course after course. When we get the chance, we'll be booking her again. We can't say enough good things about Michelle, she really was a gem and we were lucky to find her!

Stephanie provided appetizers and desserts for a Garden Party for 65 people that we held last Saturday in our backyard in honor of my Mom's 90th birthday. We could not have been more pleased with the food or the service she gave us. The food was both beautiful and delicious, as evidenced by the lack of leftovers. Her lemon chicken salad is a thing of beauty, as were all the other tasty bites. Stephanie was also able to accommodate several food restrictions with ease and without sacrificing flavor. I will hire her again without a doubt.

Dennis is everything an amazing catering should be: responsive, efficient, polite and purveyor of absolutely delicious food! We hired Dennis to cater dinner for a team offsite, and it went over marvelously. He arrived right on time, set up everything without needing much oversight, served up the food to our team, then cleaned up everything himself. All while chatting up our team and with a smile. We will absolutely be hiring him again for future catering events.

Wanting to learn to cook lower calorie food that still had great flavor, I hired Zac to come to my home and teach in our kitchen. My husband is our (excellent) cook, I am not a cook (at fifty-something years old), presenting a bit of a challenge. Rising to the occasion, Zac planned a meal that read like the menu at French Laundry! Panic! There was no way I could prepare this meal. Zac said...Way! He met me at Sonoma Market to introduce me to fresh everything, not packaged anything! Back at our kitchen, the magic began and WOW! Probably one of the most delicious dinners I've ever had at home, and certainly rivaling 5 star restaurants. Our cooking and dining experience was nothing short of superb and better yet, not a dollop of butter or a drop of cream was used to create the fantastic soup, salad, and complex main course. Through Zac's exceptional knowledge of herbs and spices, he taught me to create extraordinary flavors to enhance the food, and not over power it. It was a brilliant evening of cooking! Zac is easy going, yet very assured, and his ability to communicate is second to none. Remarkable job by a talented young man who will be continuing to educate us in the kitchen and most assuredly catering events for us. Bravo, Zac...Bravo!

Daniel was an amazing caterer. He was extremely prompt and came with most of the catering gear he needed (which is good because I have very few kitchen tools). Our entire group loved the food: cheese/meat course, tuna tartar, couscous, salmon, and tiramisu. It was delicious! And as a bonus, we did not need to clean up :)

David has been working with our catering company for the last year, and he has been fantastic as a server and a bartender. He out-hustles other employees half his age, and does so with grace and humor. He is also a skilled woodworker, and provided us with some amazing custom cheeseboards for our events. I can not recommend him more highly!

John way over-delivered on the bar tending job we hired him for. We expected the minimum and got the max. He needed virtually no direction which was huge since I was running around prepping for the party and greeting guests. Without being asked, he completely setup and did things that I didn’t have time to get to. Then he got to work and cranked away for hours... mixing drinks, getting ice, serving food. I asked if he needed backup several times but he always had it handled. I didn’t have to think about the drinks once all night since he had it covered. Before I knew it, the party was winding down and he had everything cleaned up. Absolutely amazing service. It really couldn’t have been any better. Can’t wait to use John again!

In June of 2018 Tom catered my grandparents 60th wedding anniversary party for us. We worked closely on perfecting the menu with the guest of honor's tastes in mind and Tom was able to accommodate several food allergies as well. Tom and his assistants arrived as planned on the date of the event and with all the necessary kitchen tools as well. All of them were dressed appropriately, very kind and respectful and ready to help with anything we needed. Our menu consisted of several passed hors d' oeuvres, a refreshing summer salad, halibut and filet mignon. The food was ABSOLUTELY wonderful. It was fresh, flavorful and delectable. Each plate was beautifully presented to each guest (seated dinner) and they did a wonderful job of timing each course perfectly so there wasn't a lag in the evening nor a rush to finish. I would highly recommend Tom for any catering needs and look forward to hosting another party at our home with Tom's expertise.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How do you find a good caterer?

Reviews, interviews and menu tastings will help you find the right catering choice for your big day. Start by screening possible wedding caterers based on past reviews. If a caterer you are interested in has a review that concerns you, ask them about it; how they respond will be very telling. Next, ask about their availability for your wedding date.

If the wedding caterer is available on your date, it’s time to talk about menus and prices. Be clear about what your maximum budget is find out what choices this will allow you. Caterers may custom-create a menu for your event, or they may have menu templates within different price ranges that can guide your decision. A clear budget gives the caterer clear parameters within which to work and offer creative suggestions. Schedule a menu tasting to confirm you love your wedding menu. Once you have a menu and date, and have paid a deposit to reserve the caterer’s services, confirm additional details including when the food will be delivered to the site, what kind of service will be provided, how many servers will be onsite and for how long, and who is responsible for setup and cleanup. The more specific your contract, the fewer worries you’ll have on your wedding day. Get more smart hiring tips here.

How much does wedding catering cost per person?

Wedding catering costs will always vary based on the number of guests you’re inviting, the menu you want to serve, and the way the food will be served to your guests. As you interview wedding catering companies, you’ll be presented with a cost per person for various menus. On the low end, wedding catering may cost approximately $15-$18 per person. This would include prepared food only, with no setup or service of any kind. The starting price for a simple buffet meal with minimal service typically averages $22 per person. Opting for the same menu with all organic ingredients could raise your costs to about $33 per person. A moderately upscale menu (finer ingredients, more elaborate presentation) could range from $24 to $34 per person. High-end wedding catering cost truly has no limit. Lobster, filet mignon, specialty seafood, organic ingredients — menu choices like these can boost your cost per person up to $150 and more.

Do you tip a wedding caterer?

Tipping 15 percent to 20 percent on a $3,000 catering bill can feel daunting — especially in light of all the other costs of throwing a wedding — but tipping your wedding caterer is standard practice. Be sure to ask your caterer about their specific policies. Many catering companies include gratuity as a line item on their bill. If tipping is not automatically included in your total, a good approach is to tip all the people involved the day of the event rather than paying one lump sum to the catering company. For each server and bartender, you can tip $20-$50, depending on how long they were onsite and whether they did exceptional work. You can also tip the chef; experts suggest $50. It’s also a good idea to tip the catering manager, the point-of-contact person who keeps the catering service running smoothly the day of your wedding, ensures all the food looks beautiful and is plentiful, and resolves any mishaps. Industry pros recommend tipping the catering manager $100-$200. If gratuity is not included and you’re tipping individuals, set aside $200-$500 in cash to be safe.

How much does it cost to hire a caterer?

Catering prices depend mainly on how fancy you want the food and service to be and how many guests you’ll have. When you’re first looking to hire a caterer for your event, consider how many guests you’ll have and your total food and drink budget. The national average for event catering is $340, but catering prices can range into the thousands depending on your menu, guest count, and service.

Event catering is a broad term that covers everything from fully prepared, ready-to-eat food that the hosts plate and serve themselves to full-service, multicourse meals, including rental of linens, glassware and other items, with service staff organized by the catering company. Usually a caterer will determine cost based on the type of event you’re having, how many guests will attend, the level of service you desire, and what type of menu you’d like to have. For example, if you have a set catering budget, say $1,500, and you plan to have 50 people attend, that means you have $30 per person for food. If you have the same budget with 100 people, you have $15 per person for food. In this way, the number of people you want to attend your event and the level of food you want to serve them determines how much catering will cost.

What should you look for in a caterer?

A delicious meal is a critical element of a successful wedding, with happy guests fondly remembering your fabulous wedding food. The right caterer for you will be:

  • Available: Even the best caterer is no good if they aren’t available on your wedding date. Ask early before you get your heart set on someone.
  • Affordable for you: Find a caterer that you can afford. Having a spending plan ahead of time will mean you won’t overspend on food.
  • A good personality fit: Wedding planning is stressful, so work with someone that you can get along with and communicate with easily.
  • Experienced and recommended: Ensure the company has a proven track record with events of your size and the references to back it up.
  • Transparent about money: Steer clear of shady pricing. Find a caterer who is very clear about costs and is happy to talk you through budgets and pricing options.
  • Transparent about food: Find someone who is clear about where they source their food from and where it is prepared.
Hire skilled professionals for absolutely everything.
