Michelle is a warm and inviting person who made me feel comfortable very quickly. She has been a great mentor and helped me overcome many obstacles in the aftermath of a serious life event I experienced. I felt I could be me without any concern for fear of how she may react. I have done traditional therapy but have preferred her holistic approach to combining therapy with a goal oriented approach to solving problems one may be experiencing. I have been able to get to a much better place in my life thanks to her support and the perspective she helps me obtain through self reflection. She encourages you just enough to help you push past your self-set limits without ever feeling like she is pushing you past your boundaries. Somehow, I always get to the realization I need on my own terms but with the help of her encouragement. I love her approach and feel that her respectful manner along with her warm, understanding attitude creates a space for one to really get down to one's core and find one's self in the process. My 8 year old suffered from terrible separation anxiety. So bad that she couldn't go to school. It was heartbreaking and we tried different types of therapy and then I found dr John. He was very helpful and informative, we talked on the phone a couple of times before our meeting.My daughter felt safe with him right away and the hypnotherapy session was amazing. After one session she was back to herself! I'm so thankful for Dr John McCrail, he's the best!

Vili is not your typical trainer/therapist. He has a skill set that enabled him to help me with ongoing shoulder pain. He helped me out in west hollywood and we worked together for about 3 months. He solved the problem with my injury, and if I hadn't moved so far from mid city I would have used him as a trainer. It's hard to find someone that can really help heal injuries and train you to get fit. Vili is the guy!

Best trainer I've ever worked with. Sees each body as it's own unique self... Starts at the beginning with stability and mobility creating a strong foundation. In the last couple of month working together I have seen my body change drastically, my endurance has improved, and I'm stronger and leaner. I am very happy with the services that I received from Dr. Murray S. Kaufman. The first time that I visited him I literally was a mess. I was dealing with IBS, and the condition was killing me because I didn't know how to live with it. I went to see Dr. Kaufman with the intention to receive a hypnosis protocol for IBS. I started the protocol; however, the doctor realized that I was suffering from anxiety disorder that was making the IBS flare up, and I started a therapy to work on that. Dr. Kaufman helped me to find the roots of my anxiety and how to deal with them. Every session was very productive, and I learned a lot about myself and dealing with my conditions. Now, I am in a much better place in life, and so thankful to Dr. Kaufman, because he helped me to overcome one of the darkest moments of my life. He is very knowledgeable, dedicated and professional. I recommend him from my heart to yours.

Working with Saman for almost 3 years and I have to say that he has blossomed into a great professional. I met Heather in my mid 20s back in 1997. At the time she had office hours at my gym and I was looking to lose weight. I never would have thought that stopping in to see Heather after a spinning class at my gym would have brought me to so much more; I had no idea what door I was opening. I started seeing her for weekly appointments and soon found myself in one of the most influential relationships of my life and at a time of tremendous personal growth. A desire to look good on the outside led me to Heather who led me to really look within, for the first time, in terms of food and health. She taught me about emotional eating and all the aspects of nutrition one ignores when just wanting to "be skinny" as opposed to healthy. She helped me deal with my specific, complex endocrine disorders (PCOS, Hashimoto's disease), and with how body image, shame, and self-worth manifest themselves in one's behaviors. Ultimately, and better than any psychotherapist has, Heather guided me through dealing with childhood trauma and adult bulimia. Heather is the only person I've met with the qualifications and ability to deal with all aspects of my food: psychology, nutrition, behavior, and spirit. Gaining Heather as my practitioner has been truly one of the biggest blessings of my life; now in my 40s I look back with a perspective of knowing gratitude as I still turn to the tools and insight she taught me.

What are the types of psychologists?

Psychologists are healthcare professionals who use scientific methods to understand the relationships between the brain, environment and behavior. What is a psychologist?

A psychologist is a professionally trained mental health professional who helps patients navigate challenging life situations or mental health issues. To become a psychologist you must earn a doctoral degree; qualifying degrees include a Ph.D., Psy.D. or Ed.D. To actively practice, a psychologist must be licensed in their state and maintain good standing. Psychologists are trained to administer tests that can evaluate a patient’s cognitive strength and weaknesses, intellectual skills, vocational aptitude and preference, personality characteristics, and neuropsychological functioning, explains the American Psychological Association (APA).

A psychologist meets with patients in an office and may work with a variety of methods, depending on patient need, such as cognitive, behavioral or interpersonal.  According to the APA, common reasons a person may visit a psychologist include:

  • Dealing with depression, anger or anxiety over a long period of time.
  • Help with a chronic condition that is interfering with their lives or physical health.
  • Help with grieving and other abrupt transitions.
  • Overcoming addictions.
  • Managing chronic illness.
  • Breaking old and harmful patterns of thinking or behavior.

Can a clinical psychologist write prescriptions?

To be able to write a prescription, a clinical psychologist must practice in a state that permits them to do so, and must either have a master’s degree in psychopharmacology or have completed the required advanced training program. According to the American Psychological Association (APA), five states currently permit psychologists to write prescriptions: Idaho, New Mexico, Illinois, Iowa and Louisiana. Many psychologists who are not able to write prescriptions work in partnership with psychiatrists, pediatricians or primary care doctors to help their patients who need medication.

How much do therapists cost?

If you are experiencing a challenging time, have mental health difficulties, or just want professional guidance as you move through life, a therapist can provide relief, tools and structure. The national average cost for a therapist is $80-$100 per hour, although prices may be higher or lower depending on geographic location and the experience and training of the therapist.

Psychiatrists, psychologists and licensed therapists are all health professionals who offer various modalities of therapy. Ask questions about the type of therapy they specialize in (such as cognitive or behavioral, etc.) and their area of expertise (such as grief, anxiety, body image disorders, etc.) to help you find the right fit for your needs. Therapy sessions are typically 50-60 minutes long.  The patient usually meets with the therapist in their office; sessions may also be held remotely (via Skype, etc.) or in a clinical setting. Psychologists, psychiatrists and other therapists who have earned advanced degrees will typically charge higher rates than other licensed therapists. Depending on your diagnosis, your health insurance may cover your therapy costs.
