I have received several lessons from Paul at my location. I have not played music for many years and bringing music back into my life. He is a passionate teacher, professional, punctual, flexible, and responsible. The price of the lesson is reasonable. He cares about me being his student and spends time to find the right pick for my playing. He also met me at Sam Ash to help me purchase a new guitar and that was very helpful, now I enjoy it even more so. Overall, I reccomend Paul as a guitar teacher.

We chose Emo to work with my 11 year old daughter via Skype for voice lessons. She was really nervous to have her very first voice lesson over Skype, and with a stranger, but Emo quickly put her at ease. He’s patient, encouraging, positive, and also really uses the 30 minutes fully. He wasn’t the cheapest vocal coach to respond to my thumbtack but he really knows what he’s doing and maximizes the 30 minute lesson. My daughter is really happy with him as her teacher and so am I!

Steve is a great, patient and understanding teacher. He is a tremendous guitar player who has the answers to all my questions. It's obvious that he's a trained and talented musician. I already knew how to read music and Steve has been showing me where the notes are on the fretboard, chord shapes and we've started talking about theory. He's also teaching me through online lessons and it feels like he's in the room with me. I'm excited to continue my lessons with Steve and am looking forward to the competent musician that I will become!

I have been taking guitar lessons with Paul for about two months now and I feel like I have learned so much already! I am very impressed with his knowledge on music theory and his easy demeanor makes me feel comfortable as I scrape through the chords. He also transposes songs that you request, so you can start learning through those songs instead of just chord progressions. While, also, teaching you how to read the music. I am really proud of my progress and it all has to do with his dedication to me, can't wait to see where I go from here with his guidance! I wholeheartedly recommend him if you are looking to start/get back into guitar.

I've been playing guitar for over 20 years, so when I decided to go back for more lessons I needed a teacher that would help me grow as a player. Brian has helped me connect my existing skills and knowledge to a whole new level of playing and understanding of the guitar. He is enthusiastic and patient, and listens to the inputs of the student but also pushes you to grow and keep improving. He has a great way of explaining concepts, and works with the student to keep them engaged. I highly recommend players of any skill level take lessons with Brian!

I've been taking lessons with Debbie for less than two months and I can already see results. She teaches in an understandable way. I can assure that the practices at home with the recordings in class are of great help. I stopped singing at the age of 10 and haven't properly sang until right now (age of 18.) I can already see results in just a short period of time. She is patient and makes it comfortable to sing. I am auditioning for the X Factor soon and I feel very confident on improving and getting through the judge's audition and bootcamp. I would really recommend her if you're considering on taking singing classes.

Marquita Waters has been a godsend. I never knew I had such a voice, and although I was only able to work with her for a few months (due to my moving) she has told me how far I've already come. She believed in me, and pushed me, telling me I needed to work 10 times harder than anyone else (the truth) if I wanted to make it work. There were a couple of lessons that were tough on me, but I needed them. And in the end, I'd rather have the tough coach than one who'll take my money and tell me I'm good. I was a terrible singer! And now, she says I'm hitting the notes, correcting my pitch, and sounding significantly better than those first few weeks....again in about 3 months. She's incredible! And so much more than a voice coach...a life coach, a mentor, and a friend. Her lessons helped me through some very tough times, giving me structure, and bringing me joy...something to look forward to every week. I'm sad that I had to move away from the LA area and thus discontinue the lessons...but I do have her Ear Training and Vocal Exercises CDs, and she allowed me to record all my lessons so I can keep working anytime, and everywhere I am...and I will! I feel truly honored and blessed to know Marquita and to have worked with her...and to be able to call her a friend. If you're even considering any voice work, whether singing, acting, giving speeches, etc, consider Marquita Waters and then set up an appointment! You will not regret it. Her work is unbelievable...and you'll feel anew.

Mark has been our kids (aged 11 and 9) piano teacher for a couple years. He is very professional and takes the time to adjust his teachings so that both kids can understand it at their individual levels. Mark is very patient with the kids. He is also very flexible with his schedule, accommodating the times when we need to reschedule the kids' lesson. It has been very convenient to have Mark come to the house to give the kids their lessons. Mark strikes a balance between teaching piano in a way that the kids can understand it, but also instilling the fundamentals of reading music and understanding the musicality of the songs they are learning. It is evident that Mark is very knowledge and has a passion for the piano; that comes through in his teaching.

Linda has been my son's private cello teacher for many years. With her help he jumped straight into the advanced chamber orchestra at high school as a freshman. We recently added music theory to his regular weekly lessons and as a result his grade for his AP music theory class at the high school is a 99.5%. Here's hoping for a 5 on his AP test!

I’ve never been more challenged vocally in my entire life until I began lessons with Lance. I came in with so much fear and now, after a few lessons, I’ve developed significantly better singing habits than ever before (and that’s with four years of choir experience already under my belt!). Additionally, Lance is a complete sweetheart that believes in the success of your voice’s capabilites, even when you don’t believe it yourself! My reccomendation is to come into his lessons ready to play and learn! Don’t be fearful! (I’m still working on it!) All in all, I can see myself progressing as a vocalist as I continue my lessons with Lance! So, if you are in need of an easy going vocal coach who can equally inspire, and challenge you, then look into Lance Smith!! You won’t regret it!

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What is CPR training?

Cardiopulmonary resuscitation (better known as CPR) is a lifesaving manual technique that pumps oxygenated blood back into the body’s organs if someone’s heart or breathing has stopped. A variety of CPR training is available to community members, employees and healthcare providers. CPR training may last two to five hours or more, depending on the content and the target audience. During the training, students will learn how to recognize and respond to an emergency situation. There are different CPR techniques for adults and children, but with both you will learn how to determine whether the person is conscious before administering chest compression. During the training you’ll learn chest compression techniques for adults and different techniques for children between the ages of 1 and 8. Students learn how to properly administer chest compressions, when the technique is appropriate and when it is not, and how long you must perform rescue measures. Students also learn what an automatic external defibrillator (AED) is and how to use it if necessary to shock a patient before administering CPR chest compressions.

How do I become CPR and first aid certified?

You can earn CPR training and receive first aid certification in a number of ways. Choose an online course to learn the materials remotely and then find a testing location to complete the certification process with an in-person demonstration of your knowledge and skills. Encourage your workplace to host a first aid and CPR training so employees can learn what to do in case of a workplace emergency and how to respond with lifesaving techniques. You may also be able to take a CPR or first aid class in your community. A basic CPR training may run four to five hours. After receiving CPR training, you’ll know how to respond if an adult or a child goes into cardiac arrest or stops breathing. You’ll learn how to use chest compressions to keep blood pumping to a person’s organs, which can keep them alive until an emergency responder can arrive. First aid and CPR training can also include education about how to use an automated external defibrillator (AED).

What does a Spanish tutor do?

The goal of a Spanish tutor is to help students improve their Spanish reading, writing, comprehension, and conversation skills. The tutor’s approaches may vary, depending on whether the instruction is individual or a group class. Many Spanish tutors practice immersion — meaning they will speak only Spanish with their pupils. For students with little to no Spanish experience, the Spanish tutor may use a mix of Spanish and English to accustom their students to speaking the language.

A Spanish tutor can offer a wide range of services to their students. For students currently enrolled in a Spanish class through their middle school or high school, a Spanish tutor can help them with homework and language practice, as well as expanding their understanding of their current school curriculum. For adults, Spanish tutors will have different approaches based on that student’s need. Academics and those seeking high-level professional development for their career will often have more intensive and targeted lessons, drills, and interactive speaking tests. For adults who wish to learn conversational Spanish for fun or for travel, lessons may revolve around learning commonly used phrases and practicing speaking in relaxed settings.

What is first aid training?

With first aid training, you may be able to help save a life. First aid training can teach people who are not medical professionals how to help a sick or injured person in crisis before an ambulance arrives on the scene. Most commonly, first aid training helps teach you how to administer cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) and use automated external defibrillators (AEDs).

First aid training can teach you how to respond in a variety of emergency situations, including:

  • Asthma attack
  • Anaphylaxis
  • Burns
  • Choking
  • Diabetic emergencies
  • External bleeding
  • Heart attack
  • Poisoning
  • Neck, head or back injury
  • Stroke
  • Seizure

First aid training classes may be offered by professionals who are affiliated with the Red Cross, which offers online, in-person, and blended training classes. First aid classes are also often offered through local recreation centers, city services, schools, hospitals and private companies.

What do you learn in a first aid course?

First aid training gives you a variety of lifesaving skills for responding to many different emergency situations. In a first aid course you’ll learn about how to examine someone who’s been hurt, how to use a defibrillator, how to administer cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR), and how to control bleeding and trauma. Some courses include pediatric first aid as well as adult first aid; helping a choking infant, for example, is different from helping a choking adult. Although you can take CPR and automated external defibrillator (AED) courses separately, most first aid training includes both.

In a first aid course you’ll also learn how to respond to:

  • Wounds, including punctures, cuts and hemorrhages
  • Heart attacks, chest pain and respiratory arrest
  • Bone fractures, sprains and torn muscles
  • First-, second- and third-degree burns
  • Poisoning
  • Choking
  • Bites and stings
  • Hypothermia or frostbite
  • Shock and seizures
