My daughter has taken a few lessons with Carl, and she is very happy with his style of teaching. I hired Carl with the need to prepare my daughter for the SAT exam. Carl was extremely flexible in scheduling the tutoring sessions around my daughter’s schedule. I have enjoyed listening to Carl tutor my daughter greatly. He has a great sense of humor, and has a special method in teaching, which can just about help anyone in finding the answer and/or struggles that one is having in learning the English language properly. Each time that Carl arrives for the sessions, he is prepared and ready to tutor without wasting any time. Carl is a very knowledgeable and an experienced tutor, and I believe he has the best method in preparing for the SAT. As a bonus, he is very nice, and reasonably priced considering how much he is helping my daughter to prepare for her first life-changing exam. I would definitely use his services again, and would highly recommend him to anyone.

Franco is outstanding. He is professional and targeted the needs of my son's Spanish development. While professional, he was not intimidating for my seven year old. Franco has a clear understanding of how to teach language to children. My son was engaged for the entire hour and half session. I was beyond impressed and have scheduled Franco for more sessions.

I have been taking french classes with Anne Cecile since 2012. From the beginning she insisted on speaking french throughout our lessons. She used english when needed to clarify/explain, but I quickly learned to put to use whatever french I had at that point. It really helped me remember! I had taken a french class at a language institute prior, but found that it was not well paced or structured for me. Anne Cecile tailored our lessons to my level and to conversations/vocabulary relevant to my life. I am able to talk about work, relationships, and art because Anne Cecile and I could focus on those. Even after she moved, we continued our lessons on Skype. We conversed in french, and any new/tricky vocabulary or grammar could be written in the text function, so I could review them again. My french husband has been so impressed by my improvement. I think Anne Cecile is a great french teacher and, now, also a dear friend.

Roxanne is amazing! I had zero experience with French prior to these lessons and she made learning a new language approachable and exciting. One, she provided detailed feedback after each homework assignment, which was really helpful in bettering my pronunciation. She would also incorporate games and activities into the lessons and brought a lot of enthusiasm. If you are looking to learn French at any level, look here!

Nuria Fortier was my Spanish teacher for fall 2014 through the International Language School for Children and Adults. I am an adult, beginner level spanish language student with some previous beginner coursework. Our Saturday morning one-hour classes are held at Pitzer College and ran from September through December into January. I am very impressed with Nuria's language instruction. She meets the students where he/she is in their learning, yet also helps you to challenge yourself (for example speaking as much as possible in Spanish during lesson). She stresses the importance of grammar and verb conjugation structures within conversational Spanish lesson. She constructs lessons so that we come into contact with verbs and then we address the conjugation. She recommended two very good books for beginner level that we use during the lesson, and also introduces fun story reading (at children's level which is actually very good for beginner adult learner). Nuria is very professional and reliable, and encouraging for an adult language learner! Nothing negative to report. Nuria has also created a local Spanish speaking group of current and former students who meet to practice Spanish and I am looking forward to joining this group. Thank you Nuria! I recommend ILSCA and Nuria Fortier for Spanish language. Her Children's programs are also very well attended.

Awesome teacher😀. We started out with lessons for my small children Elsa made learning so much fun for them with games and post-it's throughout the house. My children learned quickly and we fluent before they took Spanish in school. So impressed with Elsa I later hired Elsa to teach my husband and I Spanish. Elsa's approach helped us also learn quickly. We love her she is kind, patient and so much fun. I would recommend her to anyone wanting to learn Spanish. Wally P

Miss Marguerite is a great piano teacher. She approaches her music lessons through a variety of techniques and methods that always keeps our daughter engaged. She teaches her music theory, music appreciation, rhythm, play by ear and the ability to read music. She differentiates the needs of each of her students and taps into their styles and preferences. Our daughter has learned a lot under her tutelage.

Adele, is a fun loving, intelligent, kind, and just all-around great tutor. We call it an Italian play date when she comes over to teach my son. He learns through play being that he’s four years old and she adapts to what he’s interested in. He loves having her come. And we enjoy her as well. We see the benefits in him as hes starting to think and speak in Italian where previously he had not. This is very exciting to see the benefits of the weekly tutoring. I would recommend Adele as a language tutor to anyone.

I took private French instruction from Fouzia for 4 years. This started after I concluded 2 years in small classes at Alliance Francaise from beginner to intermediate. Fouzia is a superb French teacher for numerous reasons including high education, sophisticated cosmopolitan culture level, enthusiasm, uncanny ability to adjust her methods to fit the student's special needs and interests, and more. For example, I need French to relate to my 2 young grandsons in Paris, as well as for adults I encounter there. I recommend without reserve.

Emilio has been a great Spanish tutor during my summer living in LA! He was really flexible about location and time, and working around my work schedule. It's clear that he has experience teaching because he's able to work through the lessons in a comprehensive way while also giving in the moment feedback on pronunciation and grammar. My Spanish has seen significant improvements over the last 8 weeks. Highly recommend!

About

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What does a Spanish tutor do?

The goal of a Spanish tutor is to help students improve their Spanish reading, writing, comprehension, and conversation skills. The tutor’s approaches may vary, depending on whether the instruction is individual or a group class. Many Spanish tutors practice immersion — meaning they will speak only Spanish with their pupils. For students with little to no Spanish experience, the Spanish tutor may use a mix of Spanish and English to accustom their students to speaking the language.

A Spanish tutor can offer a wide range of services to their students. For students currently enrolled in a Spanish class through their middle school or high school, a Spanish tutor can help them with homework and language practice, as well as expanding their understanding of their current school curriculum. For adults, Spanish tutors will have different approaches based on that student’s need. Academics and those seeking high-level professional development for their career will often have more intensive and targeted lessons, drills, and interactive speaking tests. For adults who wish to learn conversational Spanish for fun or for travel, lessons may revolve around learning commonly used phrases and practicing speaking in relaxed settings.

How much do Spanish tutors charge?

Nationally, the average cost for a Spanish tutor ranges from $30 to $40 per hour. The cost for a Spanish tutor can vary depending on whether you choose private instruction or group lessons. Geographic location can affect cost; tutors in expensive cities and pricier regions command higher rates than in rural areas and small towns. The experience and education of the Spanish tutor will also affect their rates. For adult education, many people learning Spanish choose to join a Spanish school with tutors who teach group classes and also offer private tutoring for students. Typically these schools charge a monthly tuition that gives students access to a set number of classes per week, with private tutoring available at an additional cost. One example of an average cost is a monthly tuition of $200, which includes five 90-minute group lessons per month. Monthly tuition can vary depending on the school and the teachers. Short-term workshops are also a way to learn Spanish. Students may work with a Spanish tutor and group of other students at their skill level for a short period of time. One example of an average price is $100 for an eight-week course, with one 60-minute group class per week.
