Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What’s the best way to set up a consultation or an appointment with a tiler during the COVID-19 pandemic?

To set up an appointment or consultation with a tiler during the COVID-19 pandemic, start by conducting an online search for tilers in your area. Ask if the tiler can conduct a consultation through a video call instead of a traditional site visit to limit exposure. It’s also wise to confer about the current state of the pandemic and ensure that it’s safe to complete the project now. If not, discuss postponing for another time.

How can I find out if a tiler is considered an essential COVID-19 service provider?

To identify essential service providers during the pandemic, visit your city or state’s government website to find a list of recommendations.

A list of national recommendations can be found at CISA’s Identifying Critical Infrastructure During COVID-19 webpage. This service lists 16 different types of essential infrastructure sectors that are approved to continue operation during the pandemic. But note not all jurisdictions follow CISA’s definitions of critical infrastructure.

Does a tiler need to enter my home?

If the tiling job is located in your house, the tiler will need access to your home. The exception to this would be if the job was taking place in an outdoor area like a backyard.

If a tiler does need to enter your home, take strong precautions. Sanitize all surfaces, avoid being in the same room and conduct payment using digital platforms. Discuss a safety strategy with tilers in your area beforehand.

Can I use digital payments to pay for tile installation, replacement or repairs?

Digital payment platforms are popular in a wide range of service industries, and many tile installment, replacement and repair professionals now accept them. Common platforms include PayPal, Zelle, Google Pay, Venmo, Square Cash and more.

Start with an online search for tile companies near you. Ask them if they accept digital payments and which types you can use. Then, put a strategy together to follow social distancing guidelines.

Do tilers offer remote or virtual services?

Because tiling is a manual, in-person job, it is not typically considered a remote project. But if you come across a profile that states the tile company is offering remote services, ask them what those services include.

Can you tile over drywall?

Yes, it is possible to lay tile over drywall. If you’re looking to lay a tile backsplash in your kitchen, you can certainly do it yourself — but hiring a professional may save time.

Before you tile over your drywall, make sure the wall has a smooth surface with no bumps or cracks. Start by using a compound to seal up any crevices, then sand the drywall and clean up the dust. Then, lay a coat of primer on the drywall to get it ready for your tile.

How long does it take to lay tile?

Depending on the pro’s expertise, the size of the project and its complexity, the time it takes to lay the tile will vary. For some projects, it may take a few hours to lay tile while others will require several days of work.

When planning a tiling project for your home, get free estimates from the best tile contractors near you and ask them how long it would take them to complete your job.

Can you tile over tile floors?

Yes, you can lay tile over existing tile floors (or a backsplash). Although it’s generally best to pull up your old flooring, you can simply place tiles on top if your existing floor is in good condition.

Before you start, examine your tiles carefully for mold, cracks or unevenness. Provided none of these is an issue, you can begin laying your new tiles.

But if this is your first time laying tile — or if you want to ensure that the job is done right — save time by hiring a tiling professional near you

What do you need to lay tile?

If you’re laying a new tile floor, you’ll likely need an assortment of tools and supplies, including (but not limited to):

  • Tile
  • Tile adhesive
  • Tile trim
  • Tile spacers
  • Underlayment
  • Sealer
  • Caulk
  • Level
  • Goggles
  • Gloves
  • Trowel
  • Carpenter’s square
  • Grout
  • Sponge
  • Tape measure
  • Etc.

If you don’t have all of the tools, equipment and skills necessary to lay tile in your home, consider hiring one of the best tile contractors in your area.

Natural Stone Care did a great job cleaning my terra cotta tiles on my front patio. The tiles were extremely dirty and had fungi and algae on them. The tiles look 100% better. I have gotten complimentary comments from friends who have seen the tiles since the cleaning. The work was priced reasonably and done in a professional manner.

Junio responded very quickly and provided a reasonable quote for the small kitchen backsplash. I got tiles from Heath Ceramics, which tend to have some variation in color & uneven edging. Given some of the tile variations, he did a really good job choosing and placing the tiles. When there were 1-2 tiles where the color seemed off to me, he was willing to quickly switch the tile out. He got the job done super quickly and kept the kitchen clean.

I wish I knew the man's name who worked on our tiles - Noel, Noah? I simply didn't catch his name which is weird I admit. He did an amazing job on our bathroom tiles. He was flexible and willing to figure out solutions to difficult problems. We had a broken soap dish and missing tiles. He was able to remove the right amount of tiles and replace them so that the bathroom looks great and is usable again. I would recommend JN Tile Services. Hope he would be willing to help with our bathroom remodel when we do that in the next year or so.

You get what you pay for. Noe was the cheapest quote i got. He was quick and go the job done in a single day. He did mostly a good job with matching the offset tile pattern in my walk way, although there is a spot where the tile lines up with the existing tile forming a + in the sidewalk... minor annoyance. He did a good job cutting around plumbing fixtures, however the tiles he laid down are fairly uneven and is noticeable even through shoes as you walk over it. He didn't use any proper leveling system as far as i could tell. When the tiles get wet, you can see it pool up in certain areas of the tile where there are uneven corners... I mentioned he finished the job all in a single day. Which means he didn't bother to wait for the mortar/thinset to cure before applying the grout. I'm unsure how this will affect my tiles in the future, but everything i've read tells me that this will cause problems and i'll need to re-do the mortar in the future. Hopefully the mortar/thinset was at least properly applied so we don't have any issues of the tiles cracking...

Had a great experience with my kitchen backsplash project. Respectful, quick, responsive, and great outcome. Project was just under 30 square feet; demo of old tile and installation of new tile took 2 days total.

Sergio helped me choose the two tiles used to replace bathtub shower tiles and I am very happy with the end result. He and I worked together flexibly and effectively. He updated me on his ETAs and also on moments when we both had to make judgement calls. His work is artistic, perfect and satisfying. I had a hard time finding a re-tiling contractor and Sergio was the first one who described step by step how he would do the re-tiling and what materials he would use. He was the soul of clarity! I would hire him again.

I worked with Sergio on a recent bathroom tile project at my home in San Francisco. I am new to home ownership, so the process of redoing tile was very new to me. Sergio was super responsive, knowledgeable, timely and did a fantastic job. My floor was super uneven before the project and Sergio was able to add concrete to level the flooring before putting the new tile in place. I am super happy with the result and would highly recommend Sergio for future projects.

Angel is great to work with and very responsive. I have an older home and he regrouted my kitchen countertop and bathroom floor tile. He brought options of grout color to choose from to best match my dated tile. Both look fantastic! I highly recommend.

Solomon was very active to secure the business stating that he could start the next day for $2400 but everything had to be removed from the room and buy the grout for the installation. I received a quote from Lowes for $3200 which included everything from removal, to put back and all materials. Upon arrival, he stated that he needed to charge $500 for the removal of the tiles. I agreed as my description was not 100% clear on removal. After removing the tile and linoleum, he told me that I needed to throw away myself. I argued that I was not informed and throwing out stuff has a cost and he took $100 total. He and his friend installed two areas of tile the first day and upon completion he asked for half of the money. I was not 100% comfortable as the job was not complete, but I paid 50%. He returned 1 week later which we agreed, but came 4 hours after the agreed time and finished most of the job and the following day he completed it. Upon completion, I asked about cleaning the tiles from the grout and he said that I needed to wash a couple of times. I tried washing them with white vinegar with no luck, purchased tile cleaner, no luck. I contacted Solomon one week after installation explaining that the tiles were not coming clean. He told me that there was a chemical from Home Depot that would work and he would give me the name that night. Two days later I asked again for the name. Three days later I asked for the third time and he gave it to me. The chemical was not in the Bay Area and I had to special order it, which I did. One week later it arrived and I tried using it and it did not work. I contacted Solomon again and he recommended changing the tiles. After asking 3 more times, he finally agreed to come Saturday at 10am. At 9:59am on Saturday he told me that he could not come because of his dad's doctor appointment. He sent his friend on Monday, which I left work early for, and his friend asked which tiles needed to be changed. I told him the dirty ones, which was 3/4 of the tiles. He got angry and blamed me for walking on the tile. I explained that it has been that way since installation and in fact one area of the kitchen had a mat and had never been stepped on. He told me that he could not do it on that day and someone would contact on Thursday to come on Friday. He wanted different tiles as my tiles from Lowes were not good. I spent another $420 in tile and grout. Well it is Friday and no one has arrived after he said they would arrive I tried calling multiple times and he won’t answer my call. Finally Saturday he agreed to come Monday. My wife stayed home, worked from home and someone showed up at 4pm and only destroyed the tiles. He said that he would come back the next day after 3pm when I can arrive home from work. Another no call-no-show day. After 6 phone calls and 3 texts he finally answered to say that someone would come today and install the tiles around 9am and the next day lay the grout. Well, they showed at 1:30 abd left by 4pm with 1/3 of the tiles laid. Another day with no kitchen. This is a never ending story. TBC

It's always a gamble hiring someone online, but I could not be happier with Jorge's work! He re-tiled my bathroom floor and shower and replaced my vanity. I am thrilled with the result! In addition to being an incredibly skilled at tile work, Jorge is responsive, punctual, easy to communicate with, and was really respectful of our house. He finished the work right on schedule. I can't recommend Statewide enough!

We had a tough experience with Regson. We hired Regina and crew to retile our kitchen and bathroom. The bathroom turned out nicely, the Kitchen is a mess. There are uneven tiles, chips, and the grout is a disaster. The grout started to crack and flake a day after installation. There were also holes where no grout was applied. The solution was to reapply. That grout also chipped and cracked. In another effort to rectify, 'flex grout' aka caulking, was applied over the unsanded grout. This grout is not wearing well. It looks webbed, has sunken in spots, and hangs onto dirt. You can see the issues in the pics- and this is after scrubbing with bleach. As Regson was ultimately unwilling to fix it, we are now looking for another company to come out and address it. Other issues we had with the service included: misquoted tile needs (which results in us needing to make additional supply runs), missed planned days of work, miscommunications about the details of the job, a major plumbing issue that results from leveling compound being washed down our garage drains, and a final price that came in way over the initial no frills quote (which we somewhat expected, and would have been happy to pay had the job turned out well). This was the job that wouldn't end, and caused us much stress. And in the end, the result was not worth it. Overall, Regina was difficult to work with and incapable to accepting responsibility for anything that went wrong. I.e. Blaming the color and pattern of the tile we chose when grout was left on the surface of the tile and needed to be chipped and scrubbed off, blaming us for not buying additional tile (even though we had confirmed that the quoted sq footage included this), blaming the size of the tile (which is standard) for the grout issues... the list could go on. We have never had an experience like this with a Thumbtack vendor. Unfortunately, I would not recommend them for professional tile installation.
