Our Furnace died two days before a major snow storm. At 4 p.m., Tim Havens of Havens HVAC LLC came out on a Friday afternoon and spent an hour trying to repair our furnace. After he determined our furnace was not repairable, he switch around his scheduled and spent four hours installing a new furnace for our house that same night so we would have heat and no broken pipes during the snow storm. He provided a fair price and did a quality install. I highly recommend Havens HVAC LLC for your furnace needs. Dr. Ben Gochman

Mark is fantastic. He helped me not only diagnose what was wrong with my broken dryer, but he quickly fixed my furnace when another repairman was unable to come as promptly as he was. Fair prices, fast availability and good, honest work. I will use Mark again!

The flame sensor was malfunctioning on my furnace on a SUNDAY. David sent a couple of guys out and they were able replace the sensor and the filter for less than my friend (who is a general contractor) told me it would be. No weekend rates or hidden fees. David personally brought the replacement filter and discussed future maintenance the furnace would need. He was very nice and honest and my furnace has been working like a dream ever since! We will definitely be using Dr. HVac in the future and would recommend their services to anyone!!! Thanks David for great service!!!

Great working with the scheduler. Very easy conversation. When the technician arrived, spoke in very easy terms to help me understand what was going on and why. Sticker shock, but the furnace is much MUCH quieter. It seemed like the left hand wasn't talking to the right hand as I kept getting called by two different people to schedule, verify, or inform of the technicians imminent arrival. I appreciate the courtesy call that they would be arriving within a certain period of time. They did not arrive at the time they said they would over the phone, but still within the window that was originally scheduled.

Eric did great work on my furnace install. When the furnace I ordered was out of stock he upgraded me to a more efficient model at no extra cost. Eric stood by his work and returned to fix a few items that needed some additional attention after the install.

Joey and Chris are amazing! They gave me a really good which encompassed plumbing issues in two bathrooms plus the installation of a furnace and air conditioning. Every other HVAC and plumber that my husband and I tried to work with before where out of our budget. Not only did we get a really good deal from working with these guys; their quality of work is exceptional as well. I would highly recommend the Tipping Hat for your plumbing and HVAC needs.

Colorado discount heating and cooling replaced our furnace very quickly and at a very good price. They were very responsive and professional. Upon installation, we noticed a door latch was missing from the new furnace, and they came right back out to fix it. Highly recommended to anyone looking for a standard furnace replacement.

Don called ahead to let me know when he would arrive. He was very knowledgeable and worked hard to give me an accurate and honest assessment of the problem with our AC. He even went out of his way to check our furnace and repair the filter access door. I highly recommend Douglas Temperature Control.

Bob is the most thorough tech we have ever had the privilege of having come to our home and fix our furnace, let alone the multiple of other repairs he has the talents and knowledge to fix, just ask him and you will hear the truth. He was so detailed in furnace adjustments, even though we had another HVAC tech check the furnace when we moved here, he found the setting on natural gas when it was supposed to be propane, was on air conditioning instead of heat, replaced dangerous broken parts that if not replaced could have burnt down our home and it was very loud but after he did a thorough cleaning it is so quiet. If you need any repair he does, know it will be done right and safe!!! Besides being kind, friendly and fun to be around, D.B.A. Robert Nemec is the Master Technician, The Man To Call!!!

Jonny is oneof the most reliable people I have ever met. From tile work, to leaky pipes, to carpet install, to ceiling repair, Jonny has helped me out in ways more than he knows. He works like a machine and doesn't stop (or even eat) until the job is 100% completed and cleaned up. I plan on using his services until he longer wants to work, and highly recommend him to anybody for anything!

Trent is a straight shooter motivated by integrity. I had requested drywall repair for a 1.5' x 1.5' hole in the wall. When he gave me his estimate he thought it was for a 1.5"x1.5" hole. The job took a little over two hours instead of the quoted one, but Trent refused to let me pay him for the extra time or the materials he had to purchase because of the larger hole. He was extremely professional asking permission to use my sinks and let me know that his saw was going to be loud. He also cleaned up after himself and the work is top notch. I will look to hire Trent again for my future projects.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

Who fixes furnaces?

If your furnace needs to be repaired, you’ll want to find a qualified heating, ventilating and air conditioning (HVAC) repair technician. Each state has its own licensing requirements; some require all HVAC technicians to have an HVAC license, while others only require someone operating an HVAC service and installation company with employees to hold a contractor’s license. For example, in Alabama, the Alabama Board of Heating Air Conditioning, and Refrigeration Contractors regulates licensing, while in Kansas there is no state regulatory body and HVAC licensing can vary by region. For simple furnace repairs like changing out a filter, a trusted handyman can probably handle the job, but a trained professional should be hired for tasks like replacing a gas valve, installing a new inducer fan motor or other critical furnace repair jobs that involve dealing with gas leaks or other dangerous conditions. For more, check out our tips for smart hiring on Thumbtack.

How much will it cost me to replace my furnace?

The national average for furnace replacement is between $1,800 and $2,500. The cost can range dramatically higher depending on the model of furnace you select, any repair work you require, your location and the cost of installation. Furnace installation costs can be more than the furnace itself due to the cost of doing business and the expertise needed to install the HVAC equipment. Installing a new furnace generally requires technical know-how and the proper tools and licensing. It’s best to hire a pro and budget for furnace installation rather than risk potentially unsafe DIY installation. This will ensure your home’s safety. Check to see if your HVAC contractor has the proper licensing to do the job. If you need duct repair or replacement, expect to pay more for your furnace installation costs. The price for duct repair could be an hourly rate ranging on average anywhere from $85 to $150 per hour, with additional costs for parts.

How much does it cost to replace a gas furnace?

The cost to replace your gas furnace will vary based on the type and size of furnace you select, labor and installation costs, and any repairs your HVAC system may need. Nationally, average HVAC prices for a heating specialist range between $1,800 and $2,500. It’s important to select the right size gas furnace for your heating needs. A furnace that’s too small won’t heat your house properly, while a furnace that’s too large will run inefficiently, cycling on and off and likely breaking down sooner. HVAC specialists calculate your exact heat needs by measuring your home and incorporating variables such as the regional climate and your home’s level of insulation. Retail pricing for gas furnaces can range from $650 up to $3,000 and more. The higher the AFUE (annual fuel utilization efficiency) rating of the furnace, the more efficient it is at turning fuel into heat and the lower your carbon footprint and utility bill will be. HVAC installation costs are often based on an hourly rate and can range from under $50 to over $100 per hour, depending on the company and the furnace being installed. Higher-end furnaces cost more to install because they require added labor and expertise. For a typical installation, it might take two HVAC installation pros one day or less to remove your old furnace and replace it with a new one.

How much does it cost to have your furnace cleaned?

To keep your furnace in good working order it’s important to have it regularly cleaned. The national average furnace cleaning cost ranges from $60 to $80, though prices can vary greatly based on where you live in the country and what your furnace maintenance includes. An HVAC company may have different rates for different levels of furnace maintenance. For example, one company may offer general furnace maintenance for $79 and advanced maintenance for $138. Another company may offer a 38-point maintenance check for $89 and a 64-point maintenance check for $178. According to Energy.gov, a standard furnace cleaning and maintenance visit can include:

  • Checking the vent connection pipe and chimney
  • Checking the physical integrity of the heat exchanger
  • Adjusting the controls to provide optimum air temperatures
  • Checking the combustion chamber for cracks
  • Testing for carbon monoxide (CO)
  • Adjusting the blower control and supply-air temperature
  • Cleaning and oiling the blower
  • Removing soot and corrosion from the furnace
  • Checking the fuel input and flame characteristics
  • Sealing the connections between the furnace and the main ducts

How much will it cost me to replace my air conditioner?

If your AC system is in need of replacement, the national average air conditioner installation costs range from $2,930 to $3,670. Costs can vary greatly depending on whether you are replacing a wall or window unit or a central air system. A central air system is connected to ductwork that runs throughout your house and pumps cooled air into your various rooms via vents and registers. A central air conditioning system is far more costly than wall or window units. Selecting a central AC system that has a high seasonal energy-efficiency ratio (SEER) will likely lower both your carbon footprint and your utility bill. The type of AC system you select, where you live in the country, and the regional costs of HVAC work, duct removal and replacement, and ductwork repairs that are needed are some of the main factors that affect the cost of new air conditioner installation. Here are some examples of average costs for installing forced-air systems.

  • Install Lennox 16 SEER single-stage AC unit: $5,743
    • Removing and disposing of the old furnace, moving and reconnecting the water heater, and installing a 3.5-ton gas furnace. The job took 18 hours of labor.
  • Installation of a new 14 SEER single-range cooling system: $4,000-$6,000
  • Installation of a new 16 SEER two-range cooling system: $6,000-$8,000
  • Installation of a new 20 SEER variable capacity cooling system: $8,000-$12,000
