Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What is the best waterproof flooring for a basement?

There are several great options for waterproof basement flooring. For example, epoxy floors are waterproof but are thicker and sturdier than paint. Make sure the concrete substrate has been prepared for application.

Tile is a designer’s dream, giving you a moisture-resistant surface that’s infinitely customizable. Rubber sheets or tiles are also good waterproof options, particularly for playrooms, workout areas or laundry rooms.

Vinyl tiles and planks imitate wood or other materials very convincingly, provide moisture resistance and last a long time. And sheet vinyl is affordable and a great waterproofing solution for those in need of quick fixes.

What’s the best way to set up a consultation or an appointment with a general contractor during the COVID-19 pandemic?

To set up a consultation or appointment with a general contractor during the COVID-19 pandemic, start by performing an online search for local professionals near you.

Message the contractor, and see if they are willing to set up a video consultation call instead of an in-person site visit. With video chat, the contractor may be able to assess the scale of the project, give you better information on what needs to be done and perhaps provide an estimate. Be sure to discuss virtual payments, as well as general strategies for staying safe.

Can I use digital payments to pay for general contractor services?

Currently, many general contractors are using common digital payment services like PayPal, Venmo, Square Cash, Zelle, Google Pay and more. And more will likely adopt these and similar platforms as coronavirus continues to force companies to take on digital capabilities.

Contact general contractors beforehand to discuss whether they accept digital payments, and take all necessary measures to meet social distancing recommendations. You can also compare general contractors side-by-side online to see which ones accept digital payments.

Do general contractors offer remote or virtual services?

General contractors perform manual work and typically need to be present to complete their projects. However, if you come across a profile that states the contractor is offering remote services, ask what those services include. You can also ask if they can perform a consultation via video call and if they can do the job while following guidelines from the CDC and local agencies.

How can I find out if a general contractor is considered an essential COVID-19 service provider?

To find out whether a general contractor is considered essential in your area during the current coronavirus pandemic, visit your city or state’s government website, which will have information on essential services.

Find information on national recommendations by visiting CISA’s Identifying Critical Infrastructure During COVID-19 webpage. However, not all jurisdictions follow CISA’s definitions of critical infrastructure.

I would like to give them better rating However due to the operational principles of the company have to go with a 1 - Customer service was at the best wish i could rate that separately - The Project manager and the owner were great at customer service . However when we decided to get into the details of the project - things started derailing - " they recommended that they can do the project with Permit or No permit - With permit it would take close to 1 yr or so to complete the basement project , with out permit they can get it done by 6-8 weeks . So i reached out to my county and asked them is that true - just for the record the county i'm in has a turn over for a permit less than 1 week .Also i reached out to various sources - who recommended never to do a project without Permit , also a permit is valid for 180 days not more than that , so wasn't sure how a 1 year build time would work . Also they requested a 30% deposit to put a design - best part is that the design was not up to code as the bedroom was set up in a place to the egress window where the its not appropriate ..i never knew that when i got other builders to get a quote - all of them recommended the bedroom is not up to code that location . They might be a great firm - but my experience was not the best . Also they wanted a deposit to lock the pricing they quoted for a month , which i paid them ...however in less than 2 weeks i notified them that i'm not planning to pursue the project with them .. Still waiting for that deposit to be returned .

Wed Aug 16, 8:18 PM If you’re contemplating hiring a good General Contractor, Daniel Gonzalez and his construction teams are your guys! We hired Daniel to finish 1,300 square feet including an extra bedroom, laundry area, storage room and quilt studio in our basement. Daniel gave a fair quote and he brought top notch teams and hard working guys to the project! His electrician did an excellent job installing all new electrical; and his HVAC guy ran new heat ducts and installed a whole house humidifier. The plumber ran new plumbing for a utility sink and washing machine. The framer did a fabulous job independently building our design to our exact specifications and even added decorative arches. The drywall guys hauled in heavy drywall sheets one-by-one because it wouldn’t fit into our window wells. The drywall installers got 4 rooms put up in one and ½ days! The tapers and texture's did an excellent job taping drywall seams and adding texture in less than two days for each team. Daniel’s crews showed up on time, they were respectful, trustworthy, and we appreciated how hard they all worked to get the job done in a timely manner. Daniel and his trim and paint team did an excellent job painting, installing our flooring, trim, doors, hardware and window ledges. Best of all, Daniel is an honest guy and does what he agrees to do. Treat these guys right and they’ll treat you right! Great job! We love our new space! Thanks Daniel!
