Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How do you tell if your fridge is broken?

Use your nose — and ears — to tell if your fridge is broken and it’s time to call a pro.

The first clue is whether your food is expiring too quickly. Your fridge should be at or below 40º Fahrenheit and your freezer should be at 0º, according to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration. If temperatures deviate from these figures, the result can be food spoilage (from too much warmth) or even a frost buildup (from a faulty freezer).

Other telltale signs that your refrigerator is broken are excessive noise, escalating electric bills and excessive heat from the back of the fridge.

If you think your fridge might be broken, don’t delay — contact the top appliance repair technicians near you today.

Is it worth it to hire an appliance repair technician?

There are several reasons why it’s worth it to hire an appliance repair technician instead of replacing the unit or doing the repair yourself. The first is to keep your warranty valid — doing a DIY repair on a home appliance may void some warranties.

Another reason is having the proper tools. While you may need to go buy extra tools to perform a repair, a technician will have the tools ready.

Hiring a pro can also help ensure a long-term fix instead of a band-aid solution, as an experienced pro will be able to assess the equipment for function.

If you have a broken appliance, get free estimates from the best appliance repair pros near you to figure out if it's worth hiring a pro to fix it for you.

How much does it cost for appliance repair?

While the average cost of appliance repair is $65, the price can range from $45 to $120. A technician may set a flat rate or charge by the hour. The average hourly cost is $65, although this can range from $40 to $95.

Appliance repair technicians typically set their prices depending on the type of appliance, level of difficulty and other factors. Some pros may also charge a service fee or a consultation fee, and they might also offer discounts for new customers.

To find out how much it will cost to repair your appliance, get free estimates from the best appliance repair technicians near you.

Is appliance repair easy?

While some appliance repairs like cleaning the inlet filter on your washing machine or cleaning a smelly dishwasher are perfect DIY projects, others are better left to the pros.

Certain jobs can be dangerous and risk extensive damage, such as repairing gas lines or leaks. Others require experience and know-how, such as balancing a clothes washer, replacing electric wires, rewiring appliances and more. If you’re not sure how to get it done safely, contact the best appliance repair technicians near you.

Is it cheaper to repair or replace a refrigerator?

In some cases, it might be cheaper to repair a refrigerator — in others, your best bet is to just buy a new one. The decision to repair or replace a refrigerator will depend on several factors, but the most important is cost. If the cost to repair a fridge is much more than the cost of buying a new one, it’s time to replace the fridge.

To help you determine if your fridge should be repaired or replaced, get free estimates from the best appliance repair technicians in your area.

How much does refrigerator repair cost?

Refrigerator repair generally costs a fraction of the price of a new fridge and shouldhave your appliance up and running again in no time. The problems your refrigerator is experiencing and the parts required to fix it will affect your repair costs. Where you live can affect labor rates, which will raise or lower your costs. Here are some examples of average costs:

  • Diagnostic fees: $50-$100. Repair pros often have a service call fee or diagnostic fee to account for their time traveling to your location with all their tools to assess the problem. If you choose to have them repair the fridge, most pros then credit this fee toward your repair cost.
  • Parts: $20-$500. A new compressor averages $200, an icemaker $300, and computerized components such as touch screens and control boards average $300 or more.
  • Basic repairs: $180-$400, including parts. This price range can include repairing the evaporator or fan motor.

Are there ways to be safe if I hire an appliance repairman or specialist when social distancing?

If you decide to hire an appliance service specialist or repairman, check your local news for community guidelines and follow the CDC’s guidelines for social distancing. Discuss safety protocols with the appliance repairmen before they enter your home. And when they enter your home, stay at least 6 feet apart, don’t shake hands, sanitize all involved surfaces and use digital payments instead of cash or a check.

If you decide to postpone the work, consider buying a gift card from them or paying for future work. This is a great way to give back to the community, as many small businesses and individual contractors are feeling the economic effects of social distancing.

How can I find out if an appliance repairman or specialist is considered an essential COVID-19 service provider?

The definition of an essential provider varies based on state, city and local guidelines. Visit the official government website of your state or city to see which services are considered an essential in your area.

For more information on a national level, read CISA’s publication on critical infrastructure workers. However, note that not all jurisdictions follow CISA’s definitions of critical infrastructure.

Does an appliance specialist need to enter my home?

If the faulty appliance is located in your home (e.g., a washing machine, refrigerator, toilet, dishwasher, etc.), the appliance repairman will most likely need to come inside to complete their work. However, if your appliance is outdoors (e.g., a grill, outdoor kitchen, etc.), it may be possible for them to complete the work without entering your home and with limited person-to-person contact.

What’s the best way to set up a consultation or an appointment with an appliance specialist during the COVID-19 pandemic?

The best way to set up a consultation or appointment during the COVID-19 pandemic is virtually, with no in-person contact. After messaging the appliance repairman, you can ask to set up a video chat or phone call to discuss what work needs to be done. Make sure to ask them how they handle payments, keeping in mind that paying in advance may be safer than handling cash or credit cards until the pandemic is over. Ask the professional what procedures and precautions they have in place to ensure safety during this time.

I was very pleased with the work Dru did for me. It was a small repair on my oven door, but I'm sure it prevented bigger problems in the future. Dru called before he came, was very professional and completed the job quickly. I will recommend him to all my neighbors and will definitely call him again for any appliance repair.

Zac was quick to respond, even making himself available in the evening to discuss and schedule, which is very much appreciated when you have a key home appliance go down. Was able to do the work the very next day. He was able to provide his thoughts on what could be wrong even before looking at it, and after his on site diagnosis, turned out he was right. Fast repair. His consult fee was fair and applied toward the repair.

Alber was super responsive, starting with my initial request for service. He offered suggestions (which helped) to try until he was able to get here. During the diagnostic process he explained every step. Alber is polite, conscientious, thorough and very cost conscious. I will call him again if in need of appliance or tool repair.

Though Zak did not actually end up doing the job for us he helped a great deal. We had a bit of a communication problem (ie bad phone numbers). Because of his high level of customer service he stopped by and diagnosed anyway and it is a problem my husband can fix. I will definitely call him again for our next appliance repair need.

Dru contacted me almost immediately about my refrigerator issues. He was able to come out within a few days. Dru called on the day of the appointment and confirmed he would be able to come earlier if that worked for me. Ultimately, we had a fixable issue, but due to other concerns we needed to replace our refrigerator. Dru was honest about the issue and didn’t try to convince us to pay for repairs when replacement was the safer route for us to take. Dru was very professional and I would definitely use him for future appliance repairs.

My two year old dryer stopped drying out of the blue. It tumbled, but there was no heat. I called several companies and Cameron and Dru were the only ones to respond. They called back within the hour and came out the next business day within a two hour window. The day of the appointment, Dru called to tell me he was 15 minutes away from my house (so I could corral the cat). I appreciated that Dru wore a mask (without me asking) and kept everything clean while he was in my house. Within one hour, he had the dryer fixed and the cost was very reasonable as compared to other companies. I am beyond thrilled my dryer is drying again! I definitely recommend Dakine Appliance Repair.

Zac was very professional - he thoroughly explained what he was doing every step of the way. He had to remove the top and front of the washer and when he did so, he took great care. After his explanation regarding what and how much the cost would be to repair - I decided it would be a better decision to replace my washer. I asked him for a recommendation and he did so with specific information regarding why he made that recommendation. He even took a call from me after he was here when I had additional questions about his recommendation. I will use him again if I have a problem with any of my appliances and will definitely recommend him as skilled and trustworthy.

Short answer is not to disappear after he takes money to do a service call. Started great. Requested prepayment for service call - no problem. Told me immediately after the visit that he would send information/estimate to complete the job. This was July 21 or so. Never did send. Never coordinated a time to do the repair. Was told countless times in recent weeks by an apologetic assistant he would call to set the time. A week or so after he did the visit, he called while I was in a meeting. All I needed was to know he was setting up a time. He said to call later or that he would call later, but that never happened. I certainly called multiple times, and all calls can be documented from phone records. Today we have made arrangements with another appliance repair service, and because he never sent information on the part he said needed to be replaced, we are charging back the cost of his visit. I don't know how Thumbtack handles these things, but the connection with this person was regrettable. He took our money and disappeared. I sent the note below yesterday, through Thumbtack, to give more context: "Because we have not received a schedule call despite multiple attempts and multiple assurances by MacKenzie that you would followup the visit we paid for, I assume you do not plan to complete the work you started. If that is not correct, let me know immediately. If for some reason you simply don't want to do this, please send the information on the control board number you said needs to be replaced. You told us a month ago you would send the information and setup the return visit. I am not sure what the issue is, but we will reverse the charge for the visit, in the absence of the report we paid for, and in the absence of actually doing the work we asked you to proceed with, we will notify thumbtack and other places that list you and make appropriate and accurate reviews. If there is something the tenant or I did, and maybe your ghosting us is a big misunderstanding, I will be greatly relieved, but please tell us. What the heck happened?"
