Alex went out of his way to work with my college student's hectic schedule to help get him ready for finals. We couldn't be happier! My student said that even after just one session he took a quiz, was confident in the material and got the best grade of the semester. Thanks Alex!!!

Nicole is great! She only had 6 lessons to work with my daughter before her Act test and of course with the hard work of the student to study what they have learned from the teacher you'll get results like my daughter did. Her score went up 3 points within that short amount of time that we can schedule Nicole in. I really recommend Nicole😊. Thanks again Nicole for everything! Jackie C.

My name is Viet Tran and i was Mr. Diehl's old student at Fairview elementary for my 5th grade year. I really enjoy the atmosphere of his class room and the way Mr. Diehl teaches. He taught to read the proper way, like Americans do!

Mr. Barraza has been my teacher for a couple of years. I took guitar classes with him in high school. He is just outstanding in all the work he does. The dedication he would give me as well as every other student would go above and beyond expectation. He is a very intelligent, noble, and caring person. He is fluent in both English and Spanish, and his thirst for knowledge is insatiable, so whether you want to study music, Spanish, math, reading, writing etc. Mr. Barraza would a great choice for you, truly a great teacher for all ages.

It was difficult to find a tutor for a summer college level Calculus 1 class and I was lucky to find David! He responded quickly and was flexible with scheduling. He is approachable and easy to talk to. I wouldn't hesitate to recommend him to anyone in search of a math tutor. I've used other math tutors in the past, David is definitely one of the best.

Donna is great, very knowledgeable and easy to work with. She is excellent at working with adult students: I needed help preparing for a college placement test after taking time off from school and she was very easy to talk to and good at explaining things simply but without talking down or telling me things I already knew. Great experience, would recommend Donna to anyone!

I appreciate Ann as an online tutor. Ann is a certified Reading Interventionist with a big heart for helping kids succeed in the area of reading. I met Ann through a group I created called The Ultimate Support Group for Online Tutors. She is always willing to help others, be of service, speak at conferences, and share her knowledge. I have had the opportunity to watch Ann teach lessons to kids through videos she has submitted to me, and I was impressed with how well she connected with her students and how effective she was as a tutor. You would have to be crazy not to hire Ann.

Gary is a terrific teacher! He's been tutoring my son for a few months now, via audio + whiteboard over Skype. He's a great communicator, they have a great rapport, and my son is very enthusiastic about the lessons and the ground they are covering (they are moving very quickly). My son has long had an affection for math, just not a love for school -- and Gary has helped to recapture his love for numbers, algebra and figuring out problems. I would recommend Gary without reservation.

Nathan is incredibly patient and diligent in his tutoring. He tutored my daughter in 10th grade geometry and consistently went above and beyond to make sure she fully understood the concepts. He maintains a very open environment, my daughter felt comfortable asking him questions. I would highly recommend Nathan to teach any student, as he will alter his tutoring to accommodate any learning style.

High school juniors have challenges in general. Watching my daughter's grit to maintain honor roll, raise College entrance scores while math teachers apathetically ignore or push back on her efforts is unacceptable and beyond frustrating. Grace Peil has proven invaluable and the results show. Since tutoring began my daughter has a clearer understanding of concepts, test taking, maintains an A in math and has increased her comprehensive entrance score by 3 points. More than that, Grace is kind and extraordinarily motivating, balancing student accountability with enthusiastic encouragement and an unyielding commitment to lobbying for fair treatment by teachers. I would highly recommend Student Society to any student in need.

prepared for upcoming lessons that will be taught in the classroom, so that the student has a better understanding of the course material. I most definitely recommend Allison as a Physics tutor, and I plan on continuing to utilize her for tutoring throughout this summer 1 session at college and again next summer for Physics 2. Sarah

Kaitlyn is great with kids! I sat in on my son's first tutoring session and she worked with him very well - he came out of his shell because of her interactive and fun tutoring. He also got the highest grade on a test in the particular subject she tutored him in. Highly recommend!

My son has some challenges with mathematics, and especially with test anxiety. Sandy is a calm and reinforcing mentor and tutor, and she quickly created a trusting relationship with my son so that he could feel safe making mistakes. She creates an atmosphere where my son can come up to speed in the subjects that challenge him personally, and she is thoughtful in setting goals and a path for success. She is an excellent tutor.

    About

I have an ability to listen and really listen to understand the students needs. Once we find a common ground, I work with the student as a team to understand their question and challenges with the material, Math for example. Then I drill down to find how I will help and we build a method the student understands and which will solve their challenges. Then we practice and break down the method until ANY problem in Math will be solved by the algorithm or step by step method the STUDENT has developed with my listening and guide. Then the student owns the method and has something solid on paper to take home and practice on other problems and homework until the student is confident and prepared for the exam and final exam. The student will receive the help from me to succeed in their Math or other coursework to achieve the grade they desire. I will share with them the tools to succeed in ALL exams.

    Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How do you find a good math tutor?

Math home tutors are available for any age student, from elementary school to postgraduate studies. Rates will vary based on the tutor’s background, education and experience. To find a good math tutor, first determine your learning goals. Do you need help understanding and completing homework assignments? Are you preparing for the math portion of a standardized test? Next, read reviews from current and former students. Find someone with proven success helping students achieve their goals. If you want help on an ongoing basis, decide what your budget is and identify the tutors who fall within your range. Ask if there are additional fees for travel, as some home math tutors include travel costs in their rates and others charge extra. Ask about session length and the tutor’s teaching style, and whether they also offer online sessions or group sessions. Finally, schedule a single session with each of the math tutors you think are best to see who is the best fit.

How much do math tutors cost?

Math is a subject that’s challenging for many students. Fortunately, home math tutors can help students excel in math by working with them in focused one-on-one tutoring sessions. The cost for math tutors varies based on the type of math, the expertise and experience of the tutor, and geographic location. Pricing may range between $40 and $100 per hour, depending on the math subject. As a rule, the more complex the subject matter, the more the math tutor will charge for the lessons. The cost reflects the math tutor’s advanced studies and the work required for them to be able to teach on the subject. Frequency can also affect costs. Students can buy packages of lessons for a lower cost per session than buying individually. Nationally, the average hourly rate for a geometry home tutor is $50-$60. The national average rate for an algebra home tutor is $40-$50 per hour. For generalized math tutors, the national average ranges between $40 and $50 per hour. More intensive standardized test prep studies and math tutoring average $70-$100 per hour.

How much does home tutoring cost?

Investing in home tutoring is an investment in your child’s future. Home tutors work one on one with your child to address their challenge areas and provide room for intellectual growth that may not happen in a busy classroom. The cost of home tutors depends on multiple factors including where you live, the tutor’s background and education, the subject matter, and how often the tutor comes. Test prep home tutoring is typically more expensive than single-subject tutoring. Here are some examples of average tutoring costs:

    • National average cost for an algebra home tutor: $40-$50 per hour.
    • National average cost for a French home tutor: $30-$50 per hour.
    • National average cost for a geometry home tutor: $50-$60 per hour.
    • National average cost for a math home tutor: $40-$50 per hour.
    • National average cost for reading and writing home tutor: $40-$60 per hour.
    • National average cost for an SAT home tutor: $70 per hour.
    • National average cost for an ACT home tutor: $70-$100 per hour.
