Tim replaced my mother-in-law's water heater. He arrived on time, did a very nice job and cleaned up when he was done. He treated my mother-in-law with great respect even when her stories tended to go on and on. I strongly recommend Havens HVAC for any plumbing/HVAC work.

I had some issues with the installation of a few of the appliances in my kitchen and I couldn't get anybody (cabinet seller, appliance seller, appliance installer) willing to take responsibility or even attempt to fix it (paying job!) I was incredibly frustrated. But Mark with TXcellence Services promptly responded to my Thumbtack request and was willing to take a look. He fixed all of my shoddy install issues and did it the right way. He clearly has years of experience, knows what he is doing, and takes the time to do things the right way. I feel confident that I won't have issues with my appliance installations anymore, but if I do ever have an issue with any of them, I will absolutely be calling Mark again.

I would recommend them to anyone! His price was right in the middle of the other HVAC people. We installed a brand new central air system. I kept getting different hours of completion as well. He got it done quickly, and in that same day! I will not call anyone else now =)

Reliable HVAC contractors are hard to come by, which is why I'm so happy to have found Michael. He was super responsive and thorough, and had our unit back online the same day! I'm keeping his contact info handy for all my future HVAC needs. I highly recommend you stop reading reviews and just put Michael on your project!

I recently had an AC unit installed by Top Dawg. Top to bottom, this was a really great experience. Eric, the owner of the company came, on-time, for a quote. He was obviously knowledgeable about HVAC and explained things in a way that made it easy to understand. Most importantly, he gave a great price quote that was hundreds of dollars lower than anyone else and thousands less than the 'big companies' that tried to gouge us. His team of installers completed the job in a few hours and were friendly and courteous. I would recommend Top Dawg HVAC without reservation.

Joey and Chris are amazing! They gave me a really good which encompassed plumbing issues in two bathrooms plus the installation of a furnace and air conditioning. Every other HVAC and plumber that my husband and I tried to work with before where out of our budget. Not only did we get a really good deal from working with these guys; their quality of work is exceptional as well. I would highly recommend the Tipping Hat for your plumbing and HVAC needs.

I'm glad I found Notable Heating and Air who can install the wall mount range hood in our small 80's townhouse remodeled kitchen. The after installed of the wall mount range hood brightens up the entire look of the kitchen area. Mr. James is very knowledgeable, honest, reliable, and very reasonable prices. Did not charge when he had to run out for a part. Above and beyond service and we will definitely call again when we need help with other projects.

Everyone at All Seasons, from the office staff to the installers were professional, kind and responsive. The installation went great, the installers cleaned up after themselves and walked me through each step of the process. The office staff were helpful when I had questions after the installation and took extra steps to ensure I was satisfied. I can't rate them highly enough and will certainly use their services again.

I was amazed at the service I received from Prime. The fee quoted was, while not the least expensive, nevertheless extremely reasonable and inclusive of a trip charge and incidentals. Nathan was on time, knowledgeable, very polite, professional and responsive; answering a few related questions and providing both an emailed invoice for this service and a quote for possible future work. All in all, I could not be more pleased! Prime is now my plumbing / HVAC contractor of choice - I will recommend Prime to neighbors, friends and family!

Michael, the owner of Goodfellas, came out and did a VERY thorough estimate for my A/C project. He actually measured my windows and doors and suggested placing a return air duct in my basement which no other estimator did. He took the time to make sure I understood everything and took the information to his office and spec'd the proper equipment for my home. Goodfellas provided me a very fair price for the equipment and labor. He showed up with an installer, Jay and also had an assistant. Very neat and clean installation and very professional at every step. I received great financing terms. They went over and above and I will gladly recommend Goodfellas to everyone looking to do a heating and cooling project. Thank you Michael!

Out of 4 highly rated HVAC guys from Thumbtack who came to my house to give me an estimate, Will was the only person to actually get back to me. He was upfront about everything, was diligent with taking pictures and measurements and was knowledgeable about the process. Will and his workers showed up on time and were clean, polite and spoke perfect English. He was also able to provide insurance information very quickly when I requested it. The worksite was spotless when they left and they took pictures of all the hidden work done in our attic so we could see their finished work. No surprise costs at the end, and they finished faster than expected. 10/10 would recommend to anyone looking to get HVAC work done.

I had water leaking out from the furnace, Dominic came out and diagnosed the issue (it wasn't the water pump, as I initially thought.) He went and got the parts from their supply house, and repaired everything that same day. It took longer than expected, the better part of the day, but I was still only charged what he quoted me initially after diagnosing the issue. Furthermore, I had some vents I suspected needed repair, he was able to test them and let me know they were perfectly fine. Would definitely recommend!

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What is an HVAC system?

The letters in HVAC stand for heating, ventilation and air conditioning. An HVAC system enables you to regulate your home or building’s internal temperature (thermal control) for comfortable living and working. You can bring heat levels down in the summer and up in the winter, keeping your home or office livable year-round. HVAC systems can also help with humidity levels and regulate indoor air quality in a home or office. There are many types of HVAC systems and technologies available.

Many homes have a forced-air HVAC system. Both the heating and the central air conditioning units share a ductwork system where they either push in or pull out warm or cooled air. There are also heating and cooling systems that don’t require ductwork — such as ductless mini-splits — but work on the same principles of heat exchange. The national average to hire an HVAC specialist is $2,920-$3,670, with costs varying depending on the work you need done and the equipment you are installing.

How much does it cost to get central air?

Prices for central-air HVAC systems will vary. The national average to hire an HVAC specialist is $2,920-$3,670 but can run as high as $5,000 or even $12,000 depending on the capacity you need and other factors. Installing central air conditioning requires an entire system that works together to draw hot air out of your home. The system includes an outdoor unit, which houses the condenser and compressor, and the evaporator coils. If you don’t have an existing duct system, ductwork will need to be installed, which will affect labor and material costs. Leaking or damaged ducts will also need to be replaced.

How many years does HVAC last?

The number of years an HVAC system lasts depend on the type and brand of components that make up your system. The lifespan of an air conditioner averages between 15 and 20 years. The life expectancy of a tankless water heater is approximately 20 years, while a storage water heater is closer to 10-15 years. Ducts may need replacing within 10-15 years. Your equipment will have a longer life if you have regular tuneups and maintenance to keep everything in good working order. If you’re having repair problems and your HVAC system is over 10 years old, it’s a good time to consider the costs and benefits of repairing vs. replacing. Energystar.gov provides the following tips to help you decide whether to repair or replace:

  • Your HVAC system needs frequent repairs and your energy bills are increasing.
  • Your cooling or heating equipment is less efficient.
  • Rooms in your home are too hot or too cold.
  • Your heat pump or air conditioner is more than 10 years old.
    • Replacing your system with an Energy Star-certified unit could save up to 20 percent on your heating and cooling bills.
  • Your furnace or boiler is more than 15 years old.
    • You may choose to replace your system with an Energy Star-certified furnace (which is 15 percent more efficient than a conventional furnace) or an Energy Star-certified boiler (which is 5 percent more efficient).
  • Your home has humidity problems.
  • Your home has excessive dust.
    • Leaky ducts can pull particles and air from attics, crawl spaces and basements and distribute them throughout your house. Sealing your ducts may be a solution.
  • Your heating or cooling system is noisy.
    • You could have an undersized duct system or a problem with the indoor coil of your cooling equipment.
  • Your score on the Home Energy Yardstick is below five.
    • That means your home energy use is above average and you're probably paying too much for your utilities.

How much does it cost for a new air conditioning unit?

If you’re ready for a new air conditioning unit, it’s time to start exploring HVAC prices. The price will vary depending on the type of air conditioner you buy and its cooling capacity. Window units, which require minimal installation, are one of the most affordable options on the market. If you’re purchasing from a big-box store, you can expect to pay approximately $120-$1,000 for a window unit. Window units are appealing for their quick setup and relatively low cost, but they can use more energy over time than central air and only cool the room in which they’re installed. Portable air conditioners don’t have the cooling power of a window unit, but they do have the perk of being transportable from room to room. Expect to pay between $225 and $800 for a portable air conditioner, on average. For a whole-house air conditioning system with coils, condenser and line (not including installation or ductwork), the cost from a big-box store can range from approximately $2,000 to $4,000 or more. If you don’t have (and don’t want to put in) ducts, a ductless mini-split air conditioner is a good option, although pricey up front. Pricing can range from $650 to $4,250 per unit on average; you’ll need one unit for each room in which you want temperature control.
