Justin did an amazing job on the carpets in my house. I recently bought a new home and the previous owners had white carpet with 2 dogs and a young child, needless to say they were dirty. The carpets looked so much better once he was finished! I would recommend them to everyone! Spectrum Cleaning and Restoration was able to get me in on the same day I inquired and helped accommodate the time I needed due to work. Very friendly as well. I would have them clean my home again in a heart beat!

Josiah, owner of Papa’s Home Improvement is professional, personable and knowledgeable. He & asst Pablo arrived as scheduled each day and after we discussed projects went right to work. Josiah did several plumbing repairs/upgrades including fixing a leak someone else couldn’t despite several attempts. They painted interior doors & frames - cleaned & prepped surfaces properly and applied paint cleanly. Required 2nd coat although white on white. They did numerous handyman tasks including some outdoors. Josiah made suggestions that benefited projects. Josiah & Pablo are honest & trustworthy – important when bringing strangers in your home. They are friendly and VERY hard workers who go above and beyond to ensure customer satisfaction. They did extra work without charge to make sure I was happy. I recommend Papa’s Home Improvement for a broad range of tasks and projects.

For starters, believe all of Handy(wo)man’s 5-star reviews—she’s earned every one of her stars! After another year of battling our perpetually creeping backyard jungle, I ended up with a good two full pickup loads of assorted branches, offshoots of woody bushes, maverick weed trees, etc. And, since I own just a small-bed Ranger pickup, the job could have easily turned into three trips to the nearest recycle center. So, this time around, I decided to seek relief, via a service to load and haul away my several stacks of yard debris. A couple of quick internet searches rendered a site called “Thumbtack.com.” This put me in touch with several available services that fit my job description as I’d entered in their webpage. Before long, a half dozen or so willing participants populated the page—all but one of them being way above my price expectations. And that ONE was “Handy(wo)man and Crew,” which flew well below the radar of her rivals. [Well, “down to earth” is an apt description. The others weren’t even on the same planet!] And I might add that Brittany replies to your queries promptly—from initial contact, throughout the entire process. From the time I first saw the pleasant faces of Brittany and Kirk emerge from their full-size pickup, with trailer in tow, I knew I’d made the right choice. After a brief exchange of handshakes and smiles, they “hit the ground running.” No questions asked. They knew exactly what to do. Brittany and crew commenced to methodically stuff the trailer, as I watched my hard-wrought piles of burden shrink into oblivion! While Kirk was preparing to tie down the bulging load of branches and twigs and thorny offshoots of aggressive wild rose bushes, Brittany was merrily dancing about the property, looking for more! Talk about attention to detail, she gathered up even the scantest of twigs, restoring the debris field to an actual back yard again. And when it came to payment, Brittany balked at accepting my generous tip for a job well done. I almost had to stuff it into her pocket (but I don’t think that would have been appropriate)! And, get this. Within less than an hour after they’d left for the recycling outfit, I get a text from the road. It was Brittany, who had left a message that the dumping fee was less than she’d figured on and asked if she could return with a refund for the difference. Of course I wasn’t about to let her do that, but the offer alone was astonishing! I can’t recommend Handy(wo)man and Crew enough. They will do a variety of services, and all of what they do, I’m sure they do well...which, in my case, was far above and beyond expectations!

I am a former employee for this company and first off I would like to say the owners of this company Randy and Julie Johansson are the best owners to work for. They truly care about their employees and they're customers and treat everyone as family and as they would want to be treated. All the employees here from management all the way down to the technicians are by far the best group of guys I've ever worked with. If you need any disaster restoration work done on your house these guys are the people to do it. I was very honored to represent this company. The reason I'm no longer with this company is that I decided to get out of this type of work and do something new. I have the utmost respect for Randy and Julie Johansson and have no regrets on working for them. If you are looking for a job look no further than this company.

Micah and his team were exceptional. We were in the process of selling a relatives home and had a contract on the house when mold in the basement was discovered. Micah was at the house the night we contacted him to do an estimate. His quote was far below the other quotes we received for the same amount of work. Upon getting the quote, we decided on him and he was able to start the next day. He was able to complete all the work in a week compared to the two weeks the other companies quoted. The basement was tested at the end and Micah did an excellent job removing the issue. Micah communicated daily with updates and we were always in the loop. I would recommend Micah and his team for any restoration project.

Brad was able to make it to my house the same day. He walked me through necessary steps to identify the root cause for all the water damage in my basement. I will definitely be calling him back to perform the restoration once I have the source problem mitigated! Very personable and professional!

We have worked with Shane and his company for many years, from small projects to large renovations, only to be totally amazed and completely satisfied. They are first class from start to finish. He has offered suggestions along the way during the project and the end results have been phenomenal. I never clean up after them, they leave their work area spotless at the end of each day. When guests enter our home they are taken back by the transformation. Shane is a perfectionist and only gives you the best. We have referred family and friends and they continue to thank us.

Project was to renovate the entranceway. No written proposal was provided. No mention was made that price quoted did not include materials. My e-mail was misinterpreted in regards to not completing part of the work. Contractor should have asked for clarification. Contractor did respond in a quick time frame to correct work that had mistakenly been not completed. Quality of work on restoring shelf and bench to original condition was not satisfactory. Clean up was done well.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What is a general contractor?

When starting a home remodel or new construction project, you will probably hire a general contractor. A general contractor is a professional who is qualified to take a set of building plans and construct them as outlined. The general contractor may help perform the day-to-day building, or they may just hire workers and oversee all the work activities. In either case, the job of the general contractor is to see that your project gets built.

When you have a building project, ask for bids from various contractors. The bids tell you how much each will charge and what their scope of work will be. Once you have selected a bid, you sign a contract with that general contractor outlining the specifics of the project and the milestones during the project when they will receive payment installments. Once the contract is official, the general contractor will bring in their crew to begin construction. The contractor will manage the workers and subcontractors (anyone who doesn’t work directly for their company but that they need to outsource, like a marble installation pro), order all the materials, obtain work permits, and confirm that all the workers and subcontractors are completing their projects as planned. They typically handle all the payments to the workers and subcontractors, and send you invoice. For all these reasons, it’s also especially important to follow a few smart hiring practices when it comes to finding a general contractor.  If you are organized and competent to oversee construction projects, and are able to make sure everything is being built properly and meeting code, it’s possible you can be your own general contractor.

Why should you hire a contractor?

Hiring a general contractor is a good idea for many remodeling projects. Home renovation contractors have a broad range of skills to manage, coordinate and complete a project. They should help make sure your project comes in on time and within your budget as they hire and supervise all the necessary subcontractors, including electricians and plumbers. They also handle procuring all the materials required for your job. Some homeowners look to save money by acting as their own contractor, but an experienced home renovation contractor is worth the cost. They should know local building codes, be able to pull all necessary permits, and work with inspectors to make sure the construction meets local codes. Also, because they get professional discounts, they can typically buy materials at a better price than you can; better prices on materials and labor save you money, and make up for at least a percentage of the cost of the contractor.

When should you hire a contractor?

A few home remodeling projects can be done by an ambitious DIY-minded homeowner or local handyman, but many are best completed by a professional home renovation contractor. You should hire a contractor when you’re planning a large project that takes time, machinery or large tools, and several workers; a kitchen remodel, new bathroom or home addition will be most successful with a licensed, expert contractor at the helm. It’s particularly important to have a professional contractor on board for construction, electrical, plumbing and HVAC projects that require inspections to meet local building codes. Of course, you can hire a contractor for smaller projects, too, if you prefer to let an expert handle things like addition or removal of a wall, small framing projects, or anything that requires a permit.

You should hire a contractor when you’re ready to start a remodeling project and you have plans, a budget and a timeline for the work in hand, but before any remodeling work begins.

How much will it cost to remodel my house?

The cost to remodel a home is highly variable — size and scope of the project, quality of materials, and the number of subcontractors required to complete the job all affect the total cost. The average national cost of a home renovation project is $13,500. The national average per-square-foot cost of a remodel ranges from $25 to $100. Nationally, kitchen and bathroom remodels are the most popular types of projects, in part because they typically have the highest return on investment when the home is sold. The national average cost of a major kitchen remodel ranges from $25,000 to $62,000, while the average bathroom remodel tends to cost $6,000 to $18,000. In addition to materials and labor costs, many remodeling project costs include permit fees, which, average $900 or more, depending on your location.

Do I need a contractor for a kitchen remodel?

A kitchen remodel is one of the most important investments you can make in your home, and it’s critical to get the details right; that’s where a home renovation contractor comes in. A minor remodel usually includes new cabinet faces and hardware, replacement appliances, and paint, while an extensive job may enlarge the kitchen’s square footage, install new cabinets or an island, change the layout, and lay new tile or hardwood floors. Any renovation that includes filing permits, construction, or electrical or plumbing work is best completed by an experienced contractor who knows local codes.
