Any remodeling project poses a potentially major strain on time, money, and peace of mind, no matter the size. TVL Creative provided my husband and me a level of service and support that made our project not only survivable, but successful far beyond our expectations, through creativity, communication, problem-solving, follow-through, and commitment to the highest possible standards. To start, Ashley C. met with us to explore what we envisioned for our project. She listened carefully, offered feedback (including gentle re-direction when our ideas weren’t practical or appropriate) and then provided us with renderings that perfectly captured what we wanted. Once we made a commitment to TVL, Ashley provided us with several options for contractors and subcontractors. The people with whom we met were knowledgeable and experienced, and their pricing was competitive and reasonable. We were able to begin our project in a timely manner. The final plan for our project included popcorn ceiling removal on two floors (including vaulted living room ceiling,) lowering of a 6” raised living room floor, installation of recessed lighting in two rooms, new kitchen island with pendant lighting, new half bath, new paint for walls and doors on the first and second floors, hardwood floor installation on the first floor, new carpet on the second floor, 88’ of custom steel railings for the loft and staircase, new wood stairway risers, a new fireplace mantel and insert. Estimated timeline was two months. After the work began, Ashley directly supervised our progress via site visits every other day. As glitches arose, she was quick to respond. She set up a meeting with one subcontractor, helped us articulate our concerns, and added in her observations. In another instance, we texted her after 5 pm on a Monday when we noticed a light fixture wasn’t level. She texted the contractor, who contacted the electrician, who arrived at our door on Tuesday by 4 pm to fix it. Ashley and I worked together to select all finishes, including paint, stain, carpet, tile and hardwood flooring. In addition, she helped me shop for furnishings including rugs, light fixtures, faucets, door hardware, and recycled barn wood. She handled all ordering and materials, and followed up if items were delayed. Everything but the steel railings was finished in less than two months, and those were only delayed for a couple of weeks. Now that it’s done, my husband and I can’t believe the incredible change in our house. We feel like we’re living in a design magazine photo spread! We couldn’t be happier with the results and the process.

From the moment I met with Mike D'Angelo to discuss a deck replacement on a home I was planning to purchase, I had a pretty strong feeling he was honest, knowledgeable and competent. I since learned he can do pretty much any project from the ground up and he and his crew just finished replacing my marble tile flooring with hardwoods, reconfiguring a 3-way gas fireplace including new stonework and taking out some corner and over-the staircase shelving units. I didn't give him much lead time but he was able to make everything happen within my time frame. He listened carefully to what I was looking for and came up with some great suggestions that I ended up using. He also proved to be a one-stop shop and whatever I thought of doing, he either could get it done or knew someone else who could. I highly recommend using Mike and All Universal. I have already signed up for a painting project and plan to use his services for my deck replacement in the spring.

Ashley is a very pleasant young woman who gave us a lot of information to help us in choosing design elements for our kitchen/ home update. She is very knowledgeable and exhibited a very good artistic sense. She offered ideas that were very helpful for us to understand and to implement her ideas. We would very highly recommend her and plan to consult her in the future. She filled the time we spent with her with professional ideas and a sensitivity to our tastes and circumstances.

Though I reside in New York City, my husband and I recently purchased a vacation home in Estes Park, CO. It's an older home but still has such natural beauty which I needed help showcasing. A friend of mine referred me to Donna with DecorReform. I figured it was worth giving an interior decorator a try because I literally didn't know where to begin but knew I wanted to have it all set before our next trip for Valentine's Day. I can't express enough gratitude to Donna. She simply nailed it in every way! We haven't even met in person but I made arrangements for her to have access to the house in our absence and although I haven't seen it in person, the pictures and video sent are priceless making it even more exciting to visit! Because of Donna's willingness to go above and beyond in a situation like this, I will be giving my husband the best Valentine's gift yet and I really owe her all the thanks!

WOW! I now have a living room that it so cozy and beautiful thanks to Silver Leaf Home Staging. I get compliments from everyone. The reclaimed wood plank wall is such a transformation from builder-blah! Every piece of furniture and accessory was picked with such care, that reflect ME better than I know myself! I could never have achieved this result on my own. The painters and carpenter were so hardworking to get it all done on time. Every penny well spent for us to enjoy, and for future resale. Darcy is the sweetest!

Rachel was so great! We needed help picking a color pallette for our entire home while keeping the furniture/decor we already had and incorperating additional accent pieces. We discovered some great colors and she made it easy to make decisions! She also offered suggestions and tips. Definitely exceeded my expectations!

Brianna has been instrumental in helping me decorate my new home! We recently moved and she helped me figure out where to put existing pieces and what to buy new. She came up with a beautiful design scheme and has been a true pleasure to work with throughout the process. She has a great eye and helps mix and match both high end pieces and stuff from IKEA. Highly recommend her to anyone looking for approachable and affordable design help!

I was fortunate to meet Michele at a business club, and what a difference knowing her has made this year! I asked Michele if she could help me re-purpose the furniture I've been living with (uncomfortably) for almost 20 years. I wanted to find better placement for it and get help with colors (because I also have a paint color on the walls I don't like, but for budget reasons haven't changed since moving in 3 years ago). Michele graciously agreed to help, and has been super flexible about how we could work together and very generous with her advice and talents. My husband had worked with a designer years ago, so the only model he knew was a decorator who needed $50,000 to buy stuff. Not so with Michele. After getting her design plans, I've been able to make massive changes to how the space is used and how it looks without breaking the bank. I've taken the lead on finding and buying "missing pieces" but Michele always is happy to give her feedback before I choose. I've re-purposed 95% of the stuff I had, which was my husband's , and while it was all very expensive it has never been my taste or sized right for me or the houses we've had since he bought it. This is one of Michele's strengths. She isn't trying to decorate a museum or a space for a magazine photo op; she is very tuned into how you actually use the space and getting maximum comfort. And being able to take the pieces if you need to move. Everyone who comes over is amazed, as I have been , at the difference putting pieces in their proper spaces makes. Living in a townhouse, I could only ever envision one placement/layout, but Michele came up with 6-8 that works great. The best part is so much of the square footage was under used or not used at all. Having unused space felt so wasteful to me, and much of the house felt like "dead space". Now, I feel so happy because every room has a purpose, looks lovely, and is being highly used. We also had a lot of nice art that was not properly presented, and now the new arrangements Michele advised have made the collection look terrific and really beautify the spaces. Michele nailed how to furnish and use a very difficult, narrow loft area. It is now my husband's office. He loves it, and I love that he is not working in my main space and spreading his papers about. Michele also figured out how to blend our two very different styles (he likes masculine, traditional, heavy leather and antiques ; I like Shabby Chic and white French Provincial). I had thought that would be hopeless without starting over with all brand new, which I couldn't do. On top of these great results, MIchele is a perfectly lovely , gracious, and generous person. She is truly a joy, and great to work with. Thank you, Michele!

Tina is amazing and fresh in her approach to design. She listens to what you want and perfectly marries your vision and her sense of space. The results are a new space better than you ever expected. She helped my husband and I design our space in our basement. Selecting colors for paint is a headache for me. She made the choices so perfect! Thank you Tina for making our basement gorgeous with your vision. I felt that you listened to what we wanted as well as helped us find the perfect fit for our space! We love it!!!

We have a great room that I find very difficult to section and decorate. I was thrilled to find Natalie as she was able to help really define and simplify the room. I love that she used much of what we already had, but also added just he right details to make the room feel cozy and inviting. She offered many great ideas and options, both in person and online, never making me feel awkward when I didn't like something she suggested. I have already recommended Natalie to a friend. I would encourage anyone to work with her to just "freshen up" a room or even if starting from scratch.

I have had a wonderful and successful project with Jyothi. As a recently minted single man of let’s say “mature age”, I bought a new house and am starting over. I want my home to serve as an anchor or a port in the storms of life – to be a place I feel great about and enjoy spending a lot of time in. Oh, and I work from home 80% of the time. So having a home that reflects my individual personality is important, yet I had no idea how to accomplish this. I met Jyothi through Thumbtack and chose her over others because I liked her portfolio. I particularly liked the use of color in her portfolio and her ability to use color in a contemporary/modern setting. I am currently sitting in my home office that was cleverly integrated into my house (particularly cleaver because in my smaller house there is not an extra room for an office so integration into the living environment was a necessity), and I love what she created for me. Jyothi worked with me and heard what was important to me and gave voice and image to the ultimate feeling I was looking for. At the start Jyothi pressed for a good understanding of my budget and she presented a plan to me that met that budget spot-on. I was really pleased how she managed to fit some of my previously owned pieces into the new environment and still gave them a new look or feel. She honestly told me which old pieces just had to go as well. We hit budget because her design allowed me to spend money on new things in the places with the most impact. (Did I mention she is kind and fun too?) I am very happy in my new home and I loved working with Jyothi. I will absolutely recommend Jyothi to friends and I intend to use her again to help me change my flooring in the future.

        Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

        What do interior designers do?

Interior designers do much more than pick complementary paint colors and choose matching furniture — although those tasks are important parts of the job. Unlike decorators, interior designers usually have an associate of science degree or certificate of achievement in interior design from an accredited program. They’re trained in drafting, lighting and computer aided design (CAD), and are experts in room-specific design and residential space planning. Interior designers use these skills to plan and design safe, highly functional and beautiful interior spaces, from kitchens and bathrooms to family rooms and bedrooms. They determine space requirements, work within building codes and inspection regulations, and meet accessibility standards. An interior designer’s day-to-day job includes creative and technical tasks, both of which often require great communication skills:

        • Creating model rooms and visuals using design software.
        • Researching different textiles, materials, finishes, lighting and furniture.
        • Hiring suppliers, vendors, and contractors.
        • Estimating costs and making bids on potential jobs.

How do you find a good interior designer?

For many homeowners, the difference between a good interior designer and a bad one is simply a matter of taste — but all good designers have similar skill sets. Interior designers usually have a degree or certificate in interior design, with training in design principles and lighting, drafting, and computer aided design (CAD) software. Good interior designers have strong color balancing skills and understand how different colors influence spatial perception and moods. They know the building and electrical codes in the areas where they practice, and they make sure that any contractors they hire also work to those codes. They are knowledgeable about different upholstery fabrics and draperies, stay ahead of residential design trends, and maintain their own individual creativity. Also, good interior designers have excellent space designing skills, so they can arrange a space efficiently and with ideal traffic flow. Ultimately, hiring a good interior designer means pinpointing one whose signature style is complementary to your personal style — so checking out many designers’ portfolios is a must — and whose communication methods match yours.

How do you choose an interior designer?

Choosing an interior designer is all about finding one whose signature style fits well with your tastes and who can work within your budget. To choose the right professional for your interior design project, ask yourself these five questions:

        • What is your signature style? Good interior designers can both describe their personal aesthetic and demonstrate their signature style through their portfolios. Make sure it appeals to you.
        • How will you make sure the design fits my lifestyle? Good designers understand that the interior design must improve a homeowner’s experience in their home and fit into their lifestyle; for example, a white suede sofa is a poor choice for a family with large dogs and small children.
        • How much do you charge? Depending on the project, an interior designer may charge an hourly rate, a flat fee or a percentage of the project’s total cost.
        • How will you stick to my budget? An interior designer should have a plan for staying within your budget, which includes full transparency of costs and flexibility when choosing materials and furnishings.

Because an interior design project is highly collaborative and based on hard-to-define personal preferences, it’s most important to choose a designer who communicates clearly and listens closely to you.

How much do interior designers charge?

You can hire an interior design for a job as basic as a one-room consultation or as complex as supervising the design of an entire new home, helping with space planning, choosing color palettes, and shopping for furniture, flooring and artwork. The size and scope of the job will determine how much an interior designer charges; the average national cost for an interior designer ranges from $75 to $100 or more per hour. Other cost factors include the person’s reputation — interior designers to the stars are usually more expensive — and region. Most interior designers charge an average of $100-$225 for an initial consultation, but some will charge an hourly rate, usually starting at an average of $50, for larger projects that require extensive consultations. Hourly rates may be available for smaller projects, such as redecorating a living room or staging a home for sale; for instance, shopping and consulting can cost an average of $75 to $100 per hour, while staging costs and average $95 per hour. For many homeowners, a percentage of an interior designer’s cost is recouped through the professional discounts they receive from their vendors.

Hire skilled professionals for absolutely everything.
