Chris assisted me with my wedding catering - on top of being such an extremely talented chef, he is so knowledgable about food & catering logistics. I have also eaten at many of the restaurants he has cooked at - amazing! So lucky to know a chef like him.

We were at a cocktail party where JH prepared the food. Besides the food being eye-catching, it was scrumptious as well. The staff was equally attentive to detail. I would recommend them to private as well as corporate types. Bravo!!

I found Bacco Caterers on Thumbtack. I was impressed with the five stars and the reviews, so I contacted Chef Lauren to begin to see if she was the caterer for us—and was she ever! Joyce and I wanted to include our friends and family in our marriage anniversary celebration in our Brooklyn home. We are novice Open House hosts and Lauren advised us re details we would never have thought of, including in our menu selections. Her staff, chef Amanda and sous chef Laura, created freshly made hors d’hoeuvres in our kitchen as the party occurred, superb finger food that was varied, interesting, and delicious! People, including us, loved it. The servers Karen, Tony, and Kevin, and bartender Elroy were unobtrusively attentive and friendly to our guests. Our party took place on two floors and the yard, and the staff kept the food appearing and the empty glasses disappearing with seeming effortlessness. Many guests commented on how comfortable they made everyone feel, contributing to the general sense of joyousness. In spite of our request for no gifts, or perhaps because of it, many of our 50 guests brought flowers. As soon as I was handed the bouquets, Tony would appear and would arrange them in vases I had directed him to when flowers first arrived. I was free during the whole party to visit with my friends and family. I, who am not a party-person, enjoyed myself fully during this celebration, and I am grateful to Chef Lauren and her staff for the many ways (including a fantastic clean-up) they helped make that possible. At the end of the meal, all of our guests applauded. I think that's the best way to sum it up. Delicious food and we didn't lift a finger!

Our company has already hired Amoraco for 3 events this year. Tamara and her staff are flexible, polite, prompt, and do an amazing job at creating filling finger foods. Amoraco is a great catering option for in-office events, they require very little space/resources to prep. Their presentation is always beautiful. Our guests are always saying how delicious the food is at our events. We would definitely consider Amoraco again in the future.

I hired Wayne to cater my wedding. I asked him to put together a menu of all appetizer type foods since I didn't want to have a sit down dinner. The menu and the food were outstanding! All of my guests raved about the food which he kept coming for about two hours!! Him and his staff were very professional and so nice! On top of all that, they left the kitchen spotless (the wedding was in my parents' backyard)! I would absolutely hire him again and recommend him to anyone!

We had a party for my wife's birthday at the house for 40 people and could not have been more pleased with Adolfo Silverio and Manjar Catering. Both the food and the service were first class. Adolfo worked with us on the menu and layout for the party and everything went off without a hitch. People were raving about the food from the duck crepes to the quesadillas and the service including set-up, passing service, and clean-up were executed flawlessly. T.G. - Stamford

I wanted to give a full throated endorsement to Laura and her excellent staff at Sunflowers Catering and Event Planning. My wife and I hired Laura on the good advice of a friend to cater our wedding party in the Brooklyn art district of DUMBO in the art gallery Smack Mellon. We could not be happier. First Laura was incredibly attentive and thorough making multiple site inspections ahead of the wedding and interfacing with the venue manager. Her preplanning and coordination was excellent. Laura runs a super tight ship and her staff were poised and on point. I grew up in the hospitality business on Martha’s Vineyard and I have catered many, many weddings. I know a well oiled machine when I see one and watching the hustle of the staff setting up ahead of the event immediately calmed my frayed wedding day nerves. I knew we were in excellent hands. Now the Food! The food was fantastic. We had a raw bar that people were raving about, the passed appetizers were delicious. It was a great feeling when dinner was served and word began to make it back to us that the guests were very happy and impressed. The cookies we asked for at the end of the night were also especially tasty. Our wedding came off like a charm, it was a great night and we owe a large part of it to Laura. I would recommend Sunflowers Catering without hesitation to anyone with an event to cater. Sincerely, Ryan Matta P.S. It is probably worth mentioning that they left the venue spotless.

We had a wonderful time at our group cooking class at La Pulperia. Chef Carlos and his team were so gracious (accommodating of food allergies) and the food was delicious - empanadas, salmon tartar, guacamole and ricotta gnocchi (which we learned how to make). We enjoyed making one of their signature cocktails and sipped wine (and tequila). Thanks to Chef Carlos and everyone at La Pulperia for such a fun and unique time. Also, thanks so much to Tyler for setting everything up!

For our 25-guest Thanksgiving dinner (buffet-style), Peter was terrific, and his assistant, Monika, was too. The menu included interesting, well-received, and healthful variations on thanksgiving classics along with a lovely set of finger-food sized appetizers. Everyone enjoyed the upbeat and attentive service and the food itself. We, the hosts, enjoyed a well-planned, well-executed, hassle-free gathering. We were somewhat hesitant to engage someone who we found on the Internet, and because of the late date, we did not check additional references beyond those on Thumbtack. As it turned out, everything (including pricing) was exactly as promised. I would recommend Creative Table without hesitation. Thank you Peter and thank you Thumbtack!

Gordon catered a 60th Anniversary dinner for us. Held in our home, it was an intimate family party of 11. The food was absolutely amazing - and it just kept coming! Even our most critical eaters were impressed. In fact, my nephews begged him to move in! Thank you Gordon.

Chef Stef is a professional Culinary Chef that teaches you step by step how to prepare different recipes. Every two weeks it's a different menu. He provides you with all the food to cook and all the utensils and dishes you need to prepare a wonderful meal. It's always a fun group and we love cooking together. His knowledge about the different products, where there from, where you can buy them and how healthy they are, is very educational. He sometimes pairs the recipes you have prepared with a tasting of different wines or beers of different regions depending on which recipe you are cooking that day. Chef Stef also provides you with containers to take whatever Recipes you have cooked home for your family and children to enjoy. I highly recommend going to Chef Stef cooking classes.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How do you find a good caterer?

Reviews, interviews and menu tastings will help you find the right catering choice for your big day. Start by screening possible wedding caterers based on past reviews. If a caterer you are interested in has a review that concerns you, ask them about it; how they respond will be very telling. Next, ask about their availability for your wedding date.

If the wedding caterer is available on your date, it’s time to talk about menus and prices. Be clear about what your maximum budget is find out what choices this will allow you. Caterers may custom-create a menu for your event, or they may have menu templates within different price ranges that can guide your decision. A clear budget gives the caterer clear parameters within which to work and offer creative suggestions. Schedule a menu tasting to confirm you love your wedding menu. Once you have a menu and date, and have paid a deposit to reserve the caterer’s services, confirm additional details including when the food will be delivered to the site, what kind of service will be provided, how many servers will be onsite and for how long, and who is responsible for setup and cleanup. The more specific your contract, the fewer worries you’ll have on your wedding day. Get more smart hiring tips here.

Do you tip a wedding caterer?

Tipping 15 percent to 20 percent on a $3,000 catering bill can feel daunting — especially in light of all the other costs of throwing a wedding — but tipping your wedding caterer is standard practice. Be sure to ask your caterer about their specific policies. Many catering companies include gratuity as a line item on their bill. If tipping is not automatically included in your total, a good approach is to tip all the people involved the day of the event rather than paying one lump sum to the catering company. For each server and bartender, you can tip $20-$50, depending on how long they were onsite and whether they did exceptional work. You can also tip the chef; experts suggest $50. It’s also a good idea to tip the catering manager, the point-of-contact person who keeps the catering service running smoothly the day of your wedding, ensures all the food looks beautiful and is plentiful, and resolves any mishaps. Industry pros recommend tipping the catering manager $100-$200. If gratuity is not included and you’re tipping individuals, set aside $200-$500 in cash to be safe.

How much does wedding catering cost per person?

Wedding catering costs will always vary based on the number of guests you’re inviting, the menu you want to serve, and the way the food will be served to your guests. As you interview wedding catering companies, you’ll be presented with a cost per person for various menus. On the low end, wedding catering may cost approximately $15-$18 per person. This would include prepared food only, with no setup or service of any kind. The starting price for a simple buffet meal with minimal service typically averages $22 per person. Opting for the same menu with all organic ingredients could raise your costs to about $33 per person. A moderately upscale menu (finer ingredients, more elaborate presentation) could range from $24 to $34 per person. High-end wedding catering cost truly has no limit. Lobster, filet mignon, specialty seafood, organic ingredients — menu choices like these can boost your cost per person up to $150 and more.

How much does it cost to hire a caterer?

Catering prices depend mainly on how fancy you want the food and service to be and how many guests you’ll have. When you’re first looking to hire a caterer for your event, consider how many guests you’ll have and your total food and drink budget. The national average for event catering is $340, but catering prices can range into the thousands depending on your menu, guest count, and service.

Event catering is a broad term that covers everything from fully prepared, ready-to-eat food that the hosts plate and serve themselves to full-service, multicourse meals, including rental of linens, glassware and other items, with service staff organized by the catering company. Usually a caterer will determine cost based on the type of event you’re having, how many guests will attend, the level of service you desire, and what type of menu you’d like to have. For example, if you have a set catering budget, say $1,500, and you plan to have 50 people attend, that means you have $30 per person for food. If you have the same budget with 100 people, you have $15 per person for food. In this way, the number of people you want to attend your event and the level of food you want to serve them determines how much catering will cost.

What should you look for in a caterer?

A delicious meal is a critical element of a successful wedding, with happy guests fondly remembering your fabulous wedding food. The right caterer for you will be:

  • Available: Even the best caterer is no good if they aren’t available on your wedding date. Ask early before you get your heart set on someone.
  • Affordable for you: Find a caterer that you can afford. Having a spending plan ahead of time will mean you won’t overspend on food.
  • A good personality fit: Wedding planning is stressful, so work with someone that you can get along with and communicate with easily.
  • Experienced and recommended: Ensure the company has a proven track record with events of your size and the references to back it up.
  • Transparent about money: Steer clear of shady pricing. Find a caterer who is very clear about costs and is happy to talk you through budgets and pricing options.
  • Transparent about food: Find someone who is clear about where they source their food from and where it is prepared.
Hire skilled professionals for absolutely everything.
