From my first talk with Marylyn to last night when they left my house spotless, the whole experience with Marylyn and her staff was fantastic. I had never hired a caterer for a party before and I can't tell you how easy Marylyn make everything - to begin with, she had great recommendations for the menu, and really took care of everything, including arranging a last-minute request for a tent for the event! The day of the party she and her staff went above and beyond to make sure every detail of the party would go smoothly! My guests all commented about the WONDERFUL food and the friendly (and helpful!) bartender. You gave us a night to remember - thank you!

I found Bacco Caterers on Thumbtack. I was impressed with the five stars and the reviews, so I contacted Chef Lauren to begin to see if she was the caterer for us—and was she ever! Joyce and I wanted to include our friends and family in our marriage anniversary celebration in our Brooklyn home. We are novice Open House hosts and Lauren advised us re details we would never have thought of, including in our menu selections. Her staff, chef Amanda and sous chef Laura, created freshly made hors d’hoeuvres in our kitchen as the party occurred, superb finger food that was varied, interesting, and delicious! People, including us, loved it. The servers Karen, Tony, and Kevin, and bartender Elroy were unobtrusively attentive and friendly to our guests. Our party took place on two floors and the yard, and the staff kept the food appearing and the empty glasses disappearing with seeming effortlessness. Many guests commented on how comfortable they made everyone feel, contributing to the general sense of joyousness. In spite of our request for no gifts, or perhaps because of it, many of our 50 guests brought flowers. As soon as I was handed the bouquets, Tony would appear and would arrange them in vases I had directed him to when flowers first arrived. I was free during the whole party to visit with my friends and family. I, who am not a party-person, enjoyed myself fully during this celebration, and I am grateful to Chef Lauren and her staff for the many ways (including a fantastic clean-up) they helped make that possible. The food Chef Wayne provided was phenomenal!! We had a 40th party with 26 guests, which at the last minute became 27 guests. Chef Wayne had no problems adjusting to the unexpected guest and last minute course changes by our guests. Everyone commented on how excellent the food was and how nicely everything was plated. One note though, the Chef did run later than expected because he was stuck in traffic and coming from another event. Also, the wait staff, who were very nice and very accommodating, seemed a bit inexperienced, but all in all a very very excellent meal. I am very happy I hired Chef Wayne!!

We worked with Katherine Fonsella from DeCicco events and cuisine and she was WONDERFUL. We were planning a pre-wedding dinner for about 100 people in the Tarrytown area, but we live in Northern California. We did not know any venues or caterers or suppliers. Katherine helped us find a great, unusual loft venue, arranged all the decor, tables, lighting, and set up the catering from DeCiccos. The staff were excellent, the food was very good, everything went off perfectly. We are so appreciative of all that Katherine did to make our event wonderful!

Adolfo and his team catered my mother's 60th Surprise Birthday Party for 15ppl in her apartment. It was an absolute success!!! the food was beautifully presented and absolutely delicious. the flavor profiles as each course came out complimented the ones before. it was a cohesive menu that we both worked on preparing. the favorites of the night were the mini grilled cheese with the tomato soup shot and the duck wraps. The mini lobster rolls were tasty and we took the leftover lobster and ate them as lettuce wraps. But everything was delish!! I spoke to many caterers and his level of professionalism and follow up was what truly drew me to his as I knew he could be trusted and cared for this event to be a success as much my sisters and i did. Everyone was so pleased and in awe of the service. As soon as an item was sent out - the napkins were whisked away. My sisters and I were able to enjoy my mother's party due to the prompt attention and efficiency of Adolfo's staff. I would love to hire Adolfo again for all my parties. It's well worth it and I'm so fortunate that I was able to find his services. Thank you for his team for making it so special. My mom was blown away- much success to you!! Thumbtack community - please hire them! You will not be disappointed.

My husband and I hosted an intimate birthday dinner party for our daughter, her boyfriend and guest visiting from Belgium and a couple of close friends. This is the first time that I've personally worked with a caterer for a small event (15 people) and it couldn't have gone better. Chef Stenneth was very detailed when presenting me with catering options. He worked within my budget and was open to any suggestions and alterations I had. He was communicative and responsive to all my inquiries and delivered everything punctually. A true professional! The food itself was AMAZING! The guests at my event all specifically pointed out how much they enjoyed the food! Chef Stenneth's culinary skills easily rival top restaurants in the city and I feel like I've found a hidden gem with him. I would easily recommend him to anyone looking for a caterer for any party size!

Bernadett helped me create a custom menu(many allergies in the family). The staff was very friendly and professional. All of my guests raved about their food and service. My kitchen was left spottless at the end of the event. I highly recommend them!! Emily Westport, CT

We had a wonderful experience with Anne and First Bite Catering. We held a wine tasting and spanish dinner party for 25 guests. Anne was extremely responsive and helpful during the planning process. She was open to handling many details over and above the food prep and presentation. That was very helpful. And the food was wonderful! My guests raved about it. She and her staff were punctual and professional on the night of the event and cleaned up everything so I could enjoy the party and guests. I highly recommend First Bite and I will definitely hire them again. Thanks Anne!

My pal and I hired Kendall and Gerry to cater our husbands' joint 50th birthday party in Bedford in 2008, to rave reviews from guests. They've since catered two graduation parties for me and another 50th for a friend. Such wonderful attention to detail, from designing signature cocktails to selecting a personalized menu with the freshest locally sourced food. They make sure that not only the guest of honor and guests had a good time, but the hosts as well. Most impressive to me--Kendall joined her staff in surprising our son at his ballgame themed graduation party wearing Yankees tees and caps--despite being Red Sox fans themselves. :-) Every event they've catered has been lovely from start to finish. I cannot recommend highly enough!

Susan Kane, of Susan Kane catering helped me create an amazing communion/birthday party for my daughter with less than 2 weeks time. She knew how very special this celebration was for me, and how important it was to make it the best I possibly could & allow me to enjoy my guest. Susan was incredible from start to finish. She worked with me personally to create a menu that everyone would enjoy, from the appetizers, to the kids buffet, the adults buffet and desert. She was flexible, with my last minute request and assured me everything would be beautiful. I was in a panic, as a few of my helpers were no shows, but thanks to my Mom, the grounds keeper, Susans staff and a few friends, the party was amazing and so beautifully put together. I was so thankful that she took charge in delegating how to set up the various stations her attention to detail was much appreciated. Her food is AMAZING, guests raved all night and continue to message me. Her staff was just as amazing as the food, they were kind, polite and made sure that even the smallest request (for more cucumbers) was met with a smile. I cant say enough about Susan Kane Catering, if youre looking for a five star spread, leave your belly full, and your guests wanting more, then you should call Susan. Thank you Susan, I look forward to working with you again.

It was an amazing experience having Milt, Janet and their crew as our caterers. They arrived early to set up and be prepared for our guest. The food was AMAZING!!!! I cannot get over their stuffed mushrooms, those delicious little chicken quesadilla, OMG the shrimp cocktail...I can sit here and name every single dish we ordered and tell the world what an amazing experience it was for my taste buds and my guest will say the same. I will continue to work with Studio Event Staffing for all my future events. Not only were they professional, they were very friendly and warm--they have an awesome team put together!!

I’ve had the pleasure to collaborate with Chef Julz on various events. It was wonderful to work with her! The food was beyond delicious and looked like in a gourmet magazine. She easily accommodated my request for vegetarian/vegan options when necessary. She blended into the event easily that people didn’t even notice her, replenishing food and cleaning up. She left the place clean and tidy – making the whole process look easy and effortless. I truly recommend Chef Julz to anyone who wants an unforgettable party!

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How do you find a good caterer?

Reviews, interviews and menu tastings will help you find the right catering choice for your big day. Start by screening possible wedding caterers based on past reviews. If a caterer you are interested in has a review that concerns you, ask them about it; how they respond will be very telling. Next, ask about their availability for your wedding date.

If the wedding caterer is available on your date, it’s time to talk about menus and prices. Be clear about what your maximum budget is find out what choices this will allow you. Caterers may custom-create a menu for your event, or they may have menu templates within different price ranges that can guide your decision. A clear budget gives the caterer clear parameters within which to work and offer creative suggestions. Schedule a menu tasting to confirm you love your wedding menu. Once you have a menu and date, and have paid a deposit to reserve the caterer’s services, confirm additional details including when the food will be delivered to the site, what kind of service will be provided, how many servers will be onsite and for how long, and who is responsible for setup and cleanup. The more specific your contract, the fewer worries you’ll have on your wedding day. Get more smart hiring tips here.

How much does wedding catering cost per person?

Wedding catering costs will always vary based on the number of guests you’re inviting, the menu you want to serve, and the way the food will be served to your guests. As you interview wedding catering companies, you’ll be presented with a cost per person for various menus. On the low end, wedding catering may cost approximately $15-$18 per person. This would include prepared food only, with no setup or service of any kind. The starting price for a simple buffet meal with minimal service typically averages $22 per person. Opting for the same menu with all organic ingredients could raise your costs to about $33 per person. A moderately upscale menu (finer ingredients, more elaborate presentation) could range from $24 to $34 per person. High-end wedding catering cost truly has no limit. Lobster, filet mignon, specialty seafood, organic ingredients — menu choices like these can boost your cost per person up to $150 and more.

Do you tip a wedding caterer?

Tipping 15 percent to 20 percent on a $3,000 catering bill can feel daunting — especially in light of all the other costs of throwing a wedding — but tipping your wedding caterer is standard practice. Be sure to ask your caterer about their specific policies. Many catering companies include gratuity as a line item on their bill. If tipping is not automatically included in your total, a good approach is to tip all the people involved the day of the event rather than paying one lump sum to the catering company. For each server and bartender, you can tip $20-$50, depending on how long they were onsite and whether they did exceptional work. You can also tip the chef; experts suggest $50. It’s also a good idea to tip the catering manager, the point-of-contact person who keeps the catering service running smoothly the day of your wedding, ensures all the food looks beautiful and is plentiful, and resolves any mishaps. Industry pros recommend tipping the catering manager $100-$200. If gratuity is not included and you’re tipping individuals, set aside $200-$500 in cash to be safe.

How much does it cost to hire a caterer?

Catering prices depend mainly on how fancy you want the food and service to be and how many guests you’ll have. When you’re first looking to hire a caterer for your event, consider how many guests you’ll have and your total food and drink budget. The national average for event catering is $340, but catering prices can range into the thousands depending on your menu, guest count, and service.

Event catering is a broad term that covers everything from fully prepared, ready-to-eat food that the hosts plate and serve themselves to full-service, multicourse meals, including rental of linens, glassware and other items, with service staff organized by the catering company. Usually a caterer will determine cost based on the type of event you’re having, how many guests will attend, the level of service you desire, and what type of menu you’d like to have. For example, if you have a set catering budget, say $1,500, and you plan to have 50 people attend, that means you have $30 per person for food. If you have the same budget with 100 people, you have $15 per person for food. In this way, the number of people you want to attend your event and the level of food you want to serve them determines how much catering will cost.

What should you look for in a caterer?

A delicious meal is a critical element of a successful wedding, with happy guests fondly remembering your fabulous wedding food. The right caterer for you will be:

  • Available: Even the best caterer is no good if they aren’t available on your wedding date. Ask early before you get your heart set on someone.
  • Affordable for you: Find a caterer that you can afford. Having a spending plan ahead of time will mean you won’t overspend on food.
  • A good personality fit: Wedding planning is stressful, so work with someone that you can get along with and communicate with easily.
  • Experienced and recommended: Ensure the company has a proven track record with events of your size and the references to back it up.
  • Transparent about money: Steer clear of shady pricing. Find a caterer who is very clear about costs and is happy to talk you through budgets and pricing options.
  • Transparent about food: Find someone who is clear about where they source their food from and where it is prepared.
Hire skilled professionals for absolutely everything.
