Marylyn and Juste Hors D'Oeuvres is fabulous! She is everything that you want your wedding caterer to be. She was always very nice, very attentive to detail, easy to communicate with and highly professional. She and her staff were really wonderful throughout our whole event. The food was delicious and there was plenty of it. Perhaps most importantly she was willing to work within our proposed budget. We cannot recommend her highly enough. You will not be disappointed.

I can not say enough great things about Rich Stein. From the moment he walked in, Rich and Paul Kane had a great energy and presence that added to the buzz of my wedding day. They were communicating and engaging. All of that would have been for nothing if the food was not good. The food was EXCELLENT. The eggplant rollatini was incredible and everyone talked about how good it was. The food was fresh and flavorful. I can't forget the broccoli rabe and sausage. Paul was great in that he put his hands to do whatever was needed to help, from appetizers to the ice to cake. I also want to throw in that, this being a backyard wedding not many people wanted this small affair but Rich took the job and made this small backyard wedding feel like a much larger wedding with the quality of food. Rich and Paul far surpassed any of the praise of previous reviews and I don't think this review can show how appreciative I am of Rich Stein for making my wedding day special. Thank you, Rich. Thank you, Paul.

We hired Nate to cater our wedding this June in Brooklyn. He was definitely willing to work with our budget and our needs and helped put together a great menu for us. He was also very friendly, punctual, and pleasant to work with. The service at the wedding was great, as was the food presentation and table settings, and the food was good, though not as good as what we had at the tasting (I guess to be expected when one is cooking for 80 people). There were definitely a few issues though, like not saving our cake for our 1st anniversary and throwing leftovers away after we asked them to be saved.

I wanted to give a full throated endorsement to Laura and her excellent staff at Sunflowers Catering and Event Planning. My wife and I hired Laura on the good advice of a friend to cater our wedding party in the Brooklyn art district of DUMBO in the art gallery Smack Mellon. We could not be happier. First Laura was incredibly attentive and thorough making multiple site inspections ahead of the wedding and interfacing with the venue manager. Her preplanning and coordination was excellent. Laura runs a super tight ship and her staff were poised and on point. I grew up in the hospitality business on Martha’s Vineyard and I have catered many, many weddings. I know a well oiled machine when I see one and watching the hustle of the staff setting up ahead of the event immediately calmed my frayed wedding day nerves. I knew we were in excellent hands. Now the Food! The food was fantastic. We had a raw bar that people were raving about, the passed appetizers were delicious. It was a great feeling when dinner was served and word began to make it back to us that the guests were very happy and impressed. The cookies we asked for at the end of the night were also especially tasty. Our wedding came off like a charm, it was a great night and we owe a large part of it to Laura. I would recommend Sunflowers Catering without hesitation to anyone with an event to cater. Sincerely, Ryan Matta P.S. It is probably worth mentioning that they left the venue spotless.

We were hosting a 25th Wedding Anniversay for 50 guests. Gordon Was Easy To Work With And Very Flexible.(This was our second time using him and his staff) His Menu suggestions were too many for us to decide on our own (We actually had to host a conference call with the chef involved). When our special day arrived Gordon did not disappoint. The food was great. His presentation was creative, his dishes were delicious. Would Recommend the White Wolf Chef 100%. Will Def use him again. Regina and her team were amazing! She catered a Bridal shower for me along with 5 other bridesmaid and the brides mom so you can imagine the amount of questions and wants we had! Regina was so patient and quick to respond. The day of was a gloomy day in NY with a race going on in the area but they delivered our vision beautifully!! And everyone loved the food and decor!! I would recommend 3rs to anyone looking for catering and party planning!!

FANTASTIC! We had Fatboysbbqbus cater our outdoor wedding yesterday (6/3/17) and everyone loved the food and the service of the staff. Fred is very professional with a great sense of humor ;) and made sure we had everything we wanted, he went above and beyond. The food, WELL.....the beef brisket was so tender it broke apart before you got the piece to your mouth and it wasn't dry!! The smoked turkey was delicious, not an overly smoked flavor, just enough (dip it in their homemade bbq sauce YUM) If you love mac cheese then Fatboys Smoked Gouda mac n cheese with bacon is a MUST....AMAZING! Hams & Hots, corn on the cob, macaroni salad and corn bread all delicious. My Husband and I have no complaints about anything with our dealing with Fatboysbbqbus, price was great especially for all the food you get. No one will go hungry. We wanted to do a backyard bbq wedding and have a great time with family and friends without all the fancy, dressing up, craziness of a traditional (expensive) wedding and it came perfect. Thank you Fatboysbbqbus!!

From beginning to end, Claudia went above and beyond to ensure our wedding experience was amazing. Our first interaction with Claudia was a wonderful meal she prepared for the two of us; Salmon and Coq au vin. The food was absolutely perfect, however it was Claudia’s personality that won us over. From day one Claudia worked hard to ensure we had everything we would need for our wedding to go smoothly. She sat down with us and went through the wedding from start to finish and took extensive notes on where things would be placed at the venue (we had a lot of DIY items) so her team could set them up with ease. She also met with us at the equipment rental place, and made sure we rented everything we would need. Had she not been there we would have missed many, many items! She also ordered beverages for us through a separate vendor, from whom we received a nice discount! On the day before the wedding Claudia managed a problem with our equipment delivery for us while we were out at our rehearsal lunch - we didn’t even have to call them! Food: The food was just wonderful. The presentation, quality and preparation was like no other. Claudia was professionally trained and her food was fantastic. The appetizers during cocktail hour were passed on long trays that looked very classy. They were petit, well put together and tasted amazing. For dinner we had a great salad, which was wrapped in thinly cut cucumber slices. Very impressive. The next course was pasta, which stunned many guests. Finally, we had a choice of coq au vin, steak or a vegetarian option. We are food addicts and have very high standards and this food not only met but exceeded our expectations. Service: Like we were saying earlier, Claudia was a lot more than a caterer; she was like our wedding planner! She made sure the day went smoothly and worked with us ahead of time to determine where things would end up in the venue, the logistics of setting up, what we would need for her staff to set them up and she helped us plan for rain. Her staff were very professional and worked hard to keep the night running smoothly. Overall impression: We can’t go on enough about how satisfied we are with Claudia’s work. She really cares about her clients and went above and beyond to ensure our happiness on our special day. Thanks so much Claudia! We hope to work with you again in the future!!

We've hired MuchaChula twice for two special-occasion dinner parties. Maria Laura and Florencia are incredibly professional, exceptional chefs, and so much fun. They accommodated various allergies in our group while making an insanely delicious meal. They set a great tone for the night and make the whole evening feel (even more) special. My sister was so impressed that she recently hired them to cater her wedding. I could not recommend them more.

Being a wedding and event planner, I've dealt with a plethora of caterers, restaurants and vendors. Words cannot describe the outstanding level of service from 8 North Broadway! We hired them for our "Friendsgiving" celebration to come to our home and "chef up" a fabulous and fanciful meal! Not only were we served just that, but we were wined and dined and not one of us lifted a finger. It was the first time we actually got to sit back, relax and enjoy our company without having to cook and clean. If you've ever dined at 8NB before, then you already know how outstanding the food tastes. Whether you are in or out of the restaurant, the tastiness of the food (and the abundent amounts served) certainly fulfilled our salacious appetites! 8NB is a MUST HIRE for your next event. We already booked them for our "Secret Santa" party and can't wait to see what menu will be presented this time. Ps...the wine selection was just as fabulous as the food!

Neena Perez and her staff are nothing short of amazing! Chef Neena catered both our casual Lobster bake rehearsal dinner as well as our more elegant wedding dinner. The food and feel for each evening could not have been better. My husband and I were not only incredibly impressed with the food, but Neena handled the aesthetics and design of everything on the tables, and we were so pleased. I had been referred to Neena by the owners of the home we rented, and had spoken with her a couple of times on the phone and communicated over email only, so I wasn't exactly sure what to expect. From the moment I met her though, I knew we were in good hands. I truly cannot say enough about Neena's professionalism, thoroughness and sincerity for wanting to make sure everything was perfect for our events..perfection is what we got.

Working with Clayton and Kurt from Short Bus Catering was wonderful! From the tasting until the end of our wedding reception they provided us with spectacular food, attention and made our day completely worry free! Our guests LOVED the food and their unique way of preparing the food is amazing. It's not just your typical "wedding" food, but really a work of art. Their wait staff was extremely professional and attentive to our guests. The personalized service and attention they gave us was priceless and made our day perfect!

Eric and his staff provided a great menu, for a great value. Many of our wedding guests complimented the taste and variety of food, so we felt confident that we made the right choice. They presented everything in a timely manner, and were very professional the day of. Their service went above expectations, assisting with everything we requested and then some. We were very happy.

I heard of Chef Holiday through a local radio station. They were promoting his company and the idea of having a chef come to my home to make a meal sounded amazing so i immediately set a date. This was to celebrate our 2 year wedding anniversary and the service/food that he gave us was so much better than any restaurant! Normally, it is a waiters job to get you in and out of the door in a very short period of time. I thoroughly enjoy dinners where i can sit back, relax, sip, and eat course by course. I consulted w/ chef via phone a couple of times prior to our dinner date and told him what we like and do not like and I basically gave him freedom to make whatever he wanted. I am glad that i did this because i may have ended up picking the same foods that every restaurant serves. It was nice to put complete trust into his choices! Normally, it is a waiters job to get you in and out of the door in a very short period of time. I thoroughly enjoy dinners where i can sit back, relax, sip, and eat course by course. Everything that chef made us was great! For starters he made us a cocktail similar to a mojito minus that overly sweet taste. It had a spanish twist to it and I want the recipe! For the first course we had a chilled berry soup w/ a rum whipped cream and a flat bread w/ greens, prosciutto, cheese and an apricot jam- all very tasty! Next we had a salad followed by a pasta w/ apples served in a carved out butternut squash bowl! This was great and what a wonderful presentation. For the main course he brought out a plate w/ parma polenta, italian sausage and roasted grapes with a delicious sauce. This was phenomenal! I only wish my stomach was larger so I could have eaten it all. For dessert, we had little German pancakes I believe they were called, with a roasted apple/caramel sauce. The flavors were fresh and amazing. Dessert was accompanied by a hot drink- i forget what was in it but i do know there was gin and strawberries and it was very tasty and nice to have since it was getting cold outside. I will in the future have Chef Holiday over to do a wine or martini and food night! I was wowed and would like to see what else he has up his sleeve. Thanks for making this such a great experience for us!

They catered our wedding and were excellent. Such a bit hit! They arrived on time and set up in a timely fashion. The chefs were excellent, professional and friendly. And of course the crepes were awesome. They served well over 150 guests very efficiently. Priced reasonably and Nick was great to work with. We definitely recommend for any wedding or event.

    Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How do you find a good caterer?

Reviews, interviews and menu tastings will help you find the right catering choice for your big day. Start by screening possible wedding caterers based on past reviews. If a caterer you are interested in has a review that concerns you, ask them about it; how they respond will be very telling. Next, ask about their availability for your wedding date.

If the wedding caterer is available on your date, it’s time to talk about menus and prices. Be clear about what your maximum budget is find out what choices this will allow you. Caterers may custom-create a menu for your event, or they may have menu templates within different price ranges that can guide your decision. A clear budget gives the caterer clear parameters within which to work and offer creative suggestions. Schedule a menu tasting to confirm you love your wedding menu. Once you have a menu and date, and have paid a deposit to reserve the caterer’s services, confirm additional details including when the food will be delivered to the site, what kind of service will be provided, how many servers will be onsite and for how long, and who is responsible for setup and cleanup. The more specific your contract, the fewer worries you’ll have on your wedding day. Get more smart hiring tips here.

Do you tip a wedding caterer?

Tipping 15 percent to 20 percent on a $3,000 catering bill can feel daunting — especially in light of all the other costs of throwing a wedding — but tipping your wedding caterer is standard practice. Be sure to ask your caterer about their specific policies. Many catering companies include gratuity as a line item on their bill. If tipping is not automatically included in your total, a good approach is to tip all the people involved the day of the event rather than paying one lump sum to the catering company. For each server and bartender, you can tip $20-$50, depending on how long they were onsite and whether they did exceptional work. You can also tip the chef; experts suggest $50. It’s also a good idea to tip the catering manager, the point-of-contact person who keeps the catering service running smoothly the day of your wedding, ensures all the food looks beautiful and is plentiful, and resolves any mishaps. Industry pros recommend tipping the catering manager $100-$200. If gratuity is not included and you’re tipping individuals, set aside $200-$500 in cash to be safe.

How much does wedding catering cost per person?

Wedding catering costs will always vary based on the number of guests you’re inviting, the menu you want to serve, and the way the food will be served to your guests. As you interview wedding catering companies, you’ll be presented with a cost per person for various menus. On the low end, wedding catering may cost approximately $15-$18 per person. This would include prepared food only, with no setup or service of any kind. The starting price for a simple buffet meal with minimal service typically averages $22 per person. Opting for the same menu with all organic ingredients could raise your costs to about $33 per person. A moderately upscale menu (finer ingredients, more elaborate presentation) could range from $24 to $34 per person. High-end wedding catering cost truly has no limit. Lobster, filet mignon, specialty seafood, organic ingredients — menu choices like these can boost your cost per person up to $150 and more.

What should you look for in a caterer?

A delicious meal is a critical element of a successful wedding, with happy guests fondly remembering your fabulous wedding food. The right caterer for you will be:

    • Available: Even the best caterer is no good if they aren’t available on your wedding date. Ask early before you get your heart set on someone.
    • Affordable for you: Find a caterer that you can afford. Having a spending plan ahead of time will mean you won’t overspend on food.
    • A good personality fit: Wedding planning is stressful, so work with someone that you can get along with and communicate with easily.
    • Experienced and recommended: Ensure the company has a proven track record with events of your size and the references to back it up.
    • Transparent about money: Steer clear of shady pricing. Find a caterer who is very clear about costs and is happy to talk you through budgets and pricing options.
    • Transparent about food: Find someone who is clear about where they source their food from and where it is prepared.

How do you serve food at a wedding?

Food service at your wedding will affect your catering costs and influence the atmosphere of the reception. Buffet style is more informal; plated meals are a bit fancier; family style encourages sharing. Read about the different food service styles to select your preferred wedding catering choice.

    • Buffet: Caterers can drop off prepared foods for a DIY and budget-friendly buffet option where you set everything up and food is entirely self-service. For a fuller-service buffet, the caterers set up food, oversee the buffet throughout the event, and clean up afterwards. For food only, prices per person might average $16-$18, while a service buffet may start around $20-$22 per person. Adding food stations can increase per-person costs by at least $3-$5.
    • Family style: Servers bring large platters of food to guest tables in courses. It’s less formal (and less expensive) than a plated meal, but more formal and higher-cost than a buffet. You’ll need large tables to accommodate the platters, so plan accordingly when renting furniture for the event.
    • Plated: A plated event is a formal dining experience; waitstaff serve your seated guests for each course, fill their drinks, and attend to them throughout the dinner. A plated dinner is typically the most expensive option for both food and service.
    • Food trucks: Similar to buffets, with food trucks your guests get their own food and bring it to their table. A food truck gives a relaxed and playful vibe to your reception.
    • Cocktail reception: If you don’t want a formal seated dinner, you can opt for a wide assortment of passed appetizers at an extended cocktail hour reception.
Hire skilled professionals for absolutely everything.
