Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

Can I use digital payments to pay for moving services?

Most local moving companies are likely to accept some form of digital payment. Particularly with the COVID-19 pandemic, more companies are likely to conduct transactions through platforms like PayPal, Zelle, Square Cash, Venmo, Google Pay and more.

To ensure the mover accepts a platform you can use, you can peruse the mover’s online profile and see what is listed there. You can also ask the mover about payment policies during a consultation call.

What’s the best way to set up a consultation or an appointment with a mover during the COVID-19 pandemic?

If you’re trying to set up a consultation or an appointment with a mover during the COVID-19 pandemic, make sure to use digital tools to avoid exposure. When searching for movers online, ask if they’d be willing to do a video chat to assess the size of your move. This will be in place of the typical “walk-through” they perform, and they may be able to give you a price quote. You can also discuss safe strategies for completing the job during your call or video chat.

How can I find out if a mover is considered an essential COVID-19 service provider?

Your local city or state’s government website is a great resource if you’re trying to figure out whether a mover is considered an essential service provider during the COVID-19 pandemic.

For a source of national guidelines, visit the CISA website’s Identifying Critical Infrastructure During COVID-19. On this page, you’ll find 16 categories of critical infrastructure sectors. But note that some -- not all --  jurisdictions follow CISA’s definitions of critical infrastructure.

Does a mover need to enter my home?

A mover will likely need to enter your home -- unless you’ve placed all of your belongings outside beforehand. To stay safe during the COVID-19 pandemic, you might to consider keeping all (or most) of the work outside and/or having at-risk individuals leave the house while the movers work.

You can minimize exposure by doing a preliminary walk-through by video call instead of in person. Discuss your options with the top movers near you before hiring one.

Do movers offer remote or virtual services?

Movers generally need to be present to do their job. But if you come across a mover’s profile that states they’re offering remote services, you can contact them to see what those services include.

Are there ways to be safe if I hire a mover when social distancing?

If you decide to hire a mover, consider making adjustments to accommodate current guidelines. This may involve staying outside while the mover works inside your home or letting the mover handle only parts of the move.

It’s important to follow social distancing guidelines while performing any service work. For example, do not make physical contact with the movers, maintain at least 6 feet of distance between you at all times, and use digital payments instead of cash or a check.

What is considered a local move vs. a long-distance move?

Local moves are among the most common moves. Unlike a long-distance move, a local move is typically less than 50 miles and does not cross state lines. Generally, a local move only takes one day, and movers tend to charge by the hour.

The definition of a long-distance move may vary depending on the moving company. Generally, a long-distance considered to be any move of 400 miles or more. However, some say a long-distance move is over 50-100 miles.

Local Move

A move under 50 miles

Long-Distance Move

A move over 50-100 miles or over 400 miles; may also be called an “interstate move” or “out-of-state move”

Out-of-State Move

A move that crosses state lines; may also be called an “interstate move” or “long-distance move”

Interstate Move

A move that crosses state lines; may also be called an “out-of-state move” or “long-distance move”

Intrastate Move

A move that begins and ends in the same state, typically beyond 50 miles

Interstate moves require additional legal preparation and will incur additional costs for distance, the amount and weight of your items, the preparation required and various other factors. Moving companies tend to do an initial weighing of the truck, which you should be present for.

A move that crosses state lines is considered an interstate move or an out-of-state move. Contrast this with an intrastate move, which begins and ends in the same state, but is typically above 50 miles.

To determine whether your move is local or long-distance, contact the best movers in your area.

How much does it cost for long-distance movers?

Long-distance movers transport your belongings across the country for you. No more renting a trailer and road-tripping from state to state with your entire house hitched to your bumper. Long-distance movers make the move happen so you can fly to your new home, suitcase in hand, and wait for your furniture to arrive. Nationally, the average price range for long-distance movers is $1,490-$2,230. The distance you are moving and the number of cubic feet the movers have to transport will both affect cost. Another factor in long-distance moving costs is whether you choose to pay for an exclusive move or a consolidated move.

In an exclusive move, which is more expensive, your belongings are the only cargo on the moving truck. The movers travel directly to your new house and deliver your belongings on a scheduled day. A consolidated move is more affordable because the movers transport your belongings along with those of other people, saving them time and gas — which means you save money. The downside is that your belongings typically arrive with a two-week delivery window rather than on a prescheduled day. Read reviews to make sure you can trust the company with your possessions to ensure a peaceful moving process.

Can you move furniture by yourself?

You might be able to move smaller items like nightstands, small desks, chairs and small tables by yourself. However, it’s best to get a professional mover near you to move larger items such as couches, dressers, armoires and televisions.

If you do decide to move furniture by yourself, carefully lift and lower items and take your time.

How much does it cost to move a couch?

It costs around $290, on average, to move a couch. However, your actual cost will depend on a variety of factors. Couch movers will often quote the job based on the size of the couch, as well as how far it has to travel. A larger couch, such as a sectional, will likely cost more money to move.

On the other hand, smaller couches typically cost less, as there are fewer sections and fewer people are required to move it. Some couches may be very delicate due to their age, or they may have certain decorative details that complicate the moving process. These may cost more as well.

Great service at a great price. My movers we’re professional and took great care of my furniture and items during the move. Managers were easy to work with and made sure to confirm my move date ahead of time. Both of the movers were nice and personable people which seems like a rarity and went a long way towards easing my anxiety about the moving process.

Communication was very easy and I appreciated that the company sent a mover out a few days in advance to give an exact estimate of how much it would cost so there's no chance of additional charges on moving day. On Time Services did show up 45 minutes late, and they forgot a few items that we wanted moved into storage and almost took a few things we didn't want moved, but overall this was a convenient option and the movers were both very nice.

The guys were great, they arrived right on time and helped us with all of the heaviest items. If we ever have to move again, we will definitely consider Heavy Lifting movers! Great music taste as well!

The day before, Shay did a walk-through and we agreed on a price, which thankfully didn't change. They arrived a little late, but moved everything carefully, without damaging the furniture. Overall very happy with the movers!

Ed and Dave did a great job! They arrived right on time, got everything wrapped and moved very quickly. Quite the pros navigating some of the tricky turns and stairs in the apartments. I will definitely call them again should I need a local mover!

The quality was good in general, but the price was more expensive than I expected as I thought I had very few things to move (The price was 850$ for moving 5 boxes from new haven to princeton, each box being of 24" times 24" times 24" and the distance was 137 miles according to the google map). The price was computed based on the distance. But I wonder if there could have been a better option for computing the cost for "light moving" like my case. I actually got offers from two other pros (HDM and HD tech) for the same project with better price (650$) shortly after I moved.

I hired LBM to move from one second floor apartment to another and they were communicative, reliable and incredibly professional in handling furniture and other valuables. It can be hard to find good movers in New Haven, so I was very happy to have booked them and would again in the future.

I really don’t know where to begin… Had to arrange a move from a far… Which was very complicated on many levels… Daniel made it seamless. Nothing was too much to ask. He got the job done quickly and efficiently and made what should have been a dreadful move into a piece of cake. I would use him again and I would recommend him without a moment’s hesitation. I have done many a moves … big and small … and no one held a candle to this experience.

Truly outstanding work. Eric and his team drove several hours in the wake of a snowstorm to handle the job, and finished the move safely and ahead of schedule despite the weather hassles and two annoying staircases. Not a single scratch on furniture and all boxes in pristine condition -- I've never done a 150+ mile move so smoothly. Couldn't ask for more -- and at literally *one-third* the price of national-brand moving companies, incredible value too. I recommend them very enthusiastically. (Thanks again!)

The guys arrived early and moved all of my stuff within a few hours. Nothing was broken during the move and they even locked my old place up for me so that I could leave early to get to the new place. They were really well priced and there were no hidden or extra fees! No hassle!

Ryan and his associate arrived on time and was extremely careful with the piano we needed moving. Unlike many movers, he was very calm despite the busy street, difficulty finding good parking, and heavy lifting. We were extremely pleased at how everything went. I highly recommend him. The price was very good too.

Mike and Eddie we on time, prepared, strong and eager to work. The guys did a great job and were able to move a 650lb refrigerator from a tight space down a few stairs and onto the truck. They unloaded it through my front door and into place in my party without issue. They were polite and very professional. I would definitely use them again the next time I need large heavy items moved.

These guys helped me quickly move from Connecticut to New York. They managed to get some bulky items, like a giant wooden table whose legs were stuck on that I worried I'd have to leave behind, through some narrow spaces. They did have to take off the door, which now drags a bit, but otherwise, everything arrived in perfect shape. My move was combined with someone else's, which kept the price low.

I am so so glad that I hired Ed and FPD to be our movers. It was a difficult move and he was the only reason me and my partner did not lose our minds. Ed remained so calm, professional, and kind that it almost brought tears to my eyes. He was not only a good communicator with me throughout the whole process, but his communication with the other men from FPD as they maneuvered furniture through tough spaces was really something to admire. I am impressed with his leadership skills and his steady, reliable, seemingly unshakable personality. 10/10 stars for FPD, 10/10 stars for Ed as a human and business owner.
