To say that Dom Minasi is an unbelievably talented musician is to paint a fraction of the whole picture. Yes, the man thinks music with every single breath and feels it with every fiber of his being. Yes, he has deconstructed every standard jazz tune known to mankind, only to re construct his very distinctive own version. As a teacher, you would be hard pressed to find someone as invested as Dom in passing down "the tricks" to save you enormous amounts of time trying to figure things out otherwise. He has written so much literature about music, musicians, on every subject, he has taught for over 50 years, (50 YEARS!!) at all levels from young to old, beginners to pros, there is hardly an instance he has not experienced in teaching. I, for one, must be the worst student Dom has ever had, because I come to his lessons highly unprepared, but Dom still keeps drilling concepts and notions and makes and sends me videos, articles, references, anything that will get my butt moving, as well as helping me overcome my insecurities about playing the instrument. He essentially believes in his students and will stop at nothing to see them succeed (Very stubborn individual, this one). I have a lot to thank Dom for as a teacher, not to mention the friendship that naturally blossoms when you work with the man. Could not get a better experience than this. I better go practice now!

Rae de la Cretaz is a magician! I walked into my first lesson with her seven short months ago, after many years of longing to take singing lessons and a year of procrastinating. She put me right at ease, and I got to experience her incredible store of knowledge, energy and outright passion for the human voice. When I came in, I had what I described as a "pleasant" voice, no better, no worse. I had been singing (mostly to myself) for my entire life, and for the last 18 years with a choir. The change in this short amount of time still surprises me. Sometimes when I sing during my lesson, I hardly recognize that it's me singing. There's a richness that I would have admired in others, but never thought would be possible for me. People whose opinions I respect have come forward and remarked favorably about my voice, something I didn't experience before. In the short time that I've been taking lessons with Rae, I've learned so much, and look forward to coming to each lesson. She is a treasure!

Sara is the best Spanish teacher you could ask for. I took only 17 lessons with Sara before spending over a month in Peru and I can tell you she is absolutely spectacular. I came into these lessons with no prior knowledge of Spanish and with only 17 lessons I am able to carry out intermediate conversations with native speakers. She provides you with more than enough material to understand both conversational and grammatical rules of Spanish. DO NOT CHEAT YOURSELF HIRE THE BEST. Also the prices she charge is far cheaper than the quality of education you will receive.

My son, age 14, had his first lesson private lesson with Serge last week and love it! Serge is a professional and obviously well versed in Krav Maga. He is also a very good instructor, explaining the moves but kept the class fast paced and fun. We bought a 5 class private package for a great price. Would highly recommend!

I have had many tutors in the past and Gloria is by far the best I have experienced. She is so patient and thorough in her lessons. I already feel much more confident using Spanish in conversation in the short time I have been working with her. I highly recommend Gloria to anyone looking to learn Spanish at any level.

Mara's been great with helping me get back into vocal shape after several years off. I had four weeks to prepare for a show I was not ready for and with Mara's help I was fine. She is wonderfully flexible about scheduling and location. Mara is friendly, approachable, she tailors lessons to what I want and need, but also isn't afraid to challenge me when I need that too. She's helped me work on songs I have no sheet music for, even offered to throw something together to work with! I'm so happy with my lessons and hope to continue working with her for a long time.

I met Gary about 15 years ago, when I moved to the States. His rock music teaching program for aspiring musicians of any age, grouped by skill level and interests rather than just age group, grabbed my attention the first time I visited the (now defunct, unfortunately) East Coast Music store. I joined his program, and before I knew it I became part of many bands that he formed over the years, making lots of new musical friends in addition to improving my skills. Gary's music talent is unparalleled: he knows thousands of songs across different genres by heart, his soloing skills are amazing (especially in jazz and rock) yet he only uses them artfully to refine the sound of the band, complementing shortcomings of the wanna-be musicians that he is teaching love for music to. The result is that any aspiring musician, no matter the age and playing skills, is offered a joyful and enticing environment to play music in, and feel "I did it, I can do even better and I know now what to practice on next". I am fascinated by his ability to interact with children all ages, get the most out of them and make them feel proud of their performances. When I took music lessons as a teen ager, they were all about score reading and practicing passages. Of course they are important steps, but I never had a teacher like Gary who would also bring in the passion of sharing music in a band, learning from each others' mistakes, making commitments to other band members to practice and improve, performing in public every now and then as a motivating challenge to grow musically. More recently I enjoyed playing with Gary some serious jazz. His improvisation skills are amazing and head and shoulders above anybody I know. As I play my part I listen to his soulful re-interpretation of the tune in awe, realizing how much more I need to grow and I can learn from him. I don't think there is any other professional musician that like him can dialog with pro musicians and primary school kids beginners with the same ease.

Guitar lessons can be boring, but not with Steve. Steve's guitar playing its Eddie Van Halen's level and best of all is that he is very humble and a funny teacher. He will take his time to explain you note by note on the entire fretboard. I always have fun learning new scales, arpeggios, triads etc. with Steve. You will actually get exited every time a guitar lesson with him is coming up. A guitar instructor that actually knows how to play pretty much anything on guitar, but if you are into Rock, Classic Rock, Hard Rock, Metal, Jazz and Jazz Fusion, you should definitely take guitar lessons with Steve. - Winston Beast Master (Khiazma band)

Steve is a really great teacher! He takes into consideration what I want to learn and what my goals are. His lessons have a perfect balance between learning music theory and basic skills, and working on songs that I’ve always wanted to learn. I feel like I am making progress on the guitar and learning a lot from each lesson. Also, he is flexible with scheduling which has been really convenient for me! I highly recommend Steve as a teacher!

Amazing vocal teacher! Nicky is a great vocal teacher who is kind and patient. She has been working with my 11 year daughter for about 3 years. Nicky makes the extra effort to use age appropriate songs and part of the lesson includes music theory. Win win! My daughter can’t commit to the practice time necessary with an instrument, so we went with vocal lessons with Nicky. With singing she can practice any time and anywhere. Nicky has been able to bring out some beautiful notes, making this mom very proud. Can’t beat the price - she comes to our home and is a very accommodating with our crazy schedule. Again she is an AMAZING vocal teacher!!

I have had the honor of taking guitar lessons with Larry Meyer for about 3 years. Larry introduced me to the world of JAZZ and the concept of musical freedom through improvisation. Larry has truly inspired me to be a musician, and to think beyond my original guitar mind set. If you ask him a question, you will get an answer backed by a lifetime of musical exploration and experience, not to mention the serious undeniable pure talent. It is impossible to get a lesson from Larry and not be infected by his excitement of the music and the joy of revealing that infinite world to an aspiring player. I thank you Larry for your friendship and patience as you helped direct me through each musical stepping stone.

My daughter has been taking violin lessons with David since she was 9 years old; and more recently, she has started classical, acoustic guitar lessons the summer before entering college. He is a dedicated professional and diligent in making sure his students learn correct technique and become more musical in their own personal way. More importantly, David has the ability to keep his lessons fun and varied! Her lessons have always been highlights of my daughter's week! I recommend David without hesitation.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What is CPR training?

Cardiopulmonary resuscitation (better known as CPR) is a lifesaving manual technique that pumps oxygenated blood back into the body’s organs if someone’s heart or breathing has stopped. A variety of CPR training is available to community members, employees and healthcare providers. CPR training may last two to five hours or more, depending on the content and the target audience. During the training, students will learn how to recognize and respond to an emergency situation. There are different CPR techniques for adults and children, but with both you will learn how to determine whether the person is conscious before administering chest compression. During the training you’ll learn chest compression techniques for adults and different techniques for children between the ages of 1 and 8. Students learn how to properly administer chest compressions, when the technique is appropriate and when it is not, and how long you must perform rescue measures. Students also learn what an automatic external defibrillator (AED) is and how to use it if necessary to shock a patient before administering CPR chest compressions.

How do I become CPR and first aid certified?

You can earn CPR training and receive first aid certification in a number of ways. Choose an online course to learn the materials remotely and then find a testing location to complete the certification process with an in-person demonstration of your knowledge and skills. Encourage your workplace to host a first aid and CPR training so employees can learn what to do in case of a workplace emergency and how to respond with lifesaving techniques. You may also be able to take a CPR or first aid class in your community. A basic CPR training may run four to five hours. After receiving CPR training, you’ll know how to respond if an adult or a child goes into cardiac arrest or stops breathing. You’ll learn how to use chest compressions to keep blood pumping to a person’s organs, which can keep them alive until an emergency responder can arrive. First aid and CPR training can also include education about how to use an automated external defibrillator (AED).

What does a Spanish tutor do?

The goal of a Spanish tutor is to help students improve their Spanish reading, writing, comprehension, and conversation skills. The tutor’s approaches may vary, depending on whether the instruction is individual or a group class. Many Spanish tutors practice immersion — meaning they will speak only Spanish with their pupils. For students with little to no Spanish experience, the Spanish tutor may use a mix of Spanish and English to accustom their students to speaking the language.

A Spanish tutor can offer a wide range of services to their students. For students currently enrolled in a Spanish class through their middle school or high school, a Spanish tutor can help them with homework and language practice, as well as expanding their understanding of their current school curriculum. For adults, Spanish tutors will have different approaches based on that student’s need. Academics and those seeking high-level professional development for their career will often have more intensive and targeted lessons, drills, and interactive speaking tests. For adults who wish to learn conversational Spanish for fun or for travel, lessons may revolve around learning commonly used phrases and practicing speaking in relaxed settings.

What is first aid training?

With first aid training, you may be able to help save a life. First aid training can teach people who are not medical professionals how to help a sick or injured person in crisis before an ambulance arrives on the scene. Most commonly, first aid training helps teach you how to administer cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) and use automated external defibrillators (AEDs).

First aid training can teach you how to respond in a variety of emergency situations, including:

  • Asthma attack
  • Anaphylaxis
  • Burns
  • Choking
  • Diabetic emergencies
  • External bleeding
  • Heart attack
  • Poisoning
  • Neck, head or back injury
  • Stroke
  • Seizure

First aid training classes may be offered by professionals who are affiliated with the Red Cross, which offers online, in-person, and blended training classes. First aid classes are also often offered through local recreation centers, city services, schools, hospitals and private companies.

What do you learn in a first aid course?

First aid training gives you a variety of lifesaving skills for responding to many different emergency situations. In a first aid course you’ll learn about how to examine someone who’s been hurt, how to use a defibrillator, how to administer cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR), and how to control bleeding and trauma. Some courses include pediatric first aid as well as adult first aid; helping a choking infant, for example, is different from helping a choking adult. Although you can take CPR and automated external defibrillator (AED) courses separately, most first aid training includes both.

In a first aid course you’ll also learn how to respond to:

  • Wounds, including punctures, cuts and hemorrhages
  • Heart attacks, chest pain and respiratory arrest
  • Bone fractures, sprains and torn muscles
  • First-, second- and third-degree burns
  • Poisoning
  • Choking
  • Bites and stings
  • Hypothermia or frostbite
  • Shock and seizures
