The food was Fabulous. The caterer was late and didn't tell me that she doesn't provide heating trays or any utensils etc. I didn't ask about those things because all the other caterers supply them and I just assumed she would as well. Otherwise, Ellen is a very nice person and did a great job. I was happy with the food and service.

Chef Chris was absolutely amazing. I was hosting a monthly burger group. We usually go out to burger restaurants picked by the host of that month. I decided to have Chris come and barbecue burgers for us. He recommended 4 burgers that all equally amazing. All of the guys in the group were incredibly impressed and I've gotten a ton of kudos, all thanks to Chris! The process was a fantastic experience experience from the beginning. Chris replied to my request and we had a quick phone conversation. He quickly followed up with a recommended menu, which we never changed - it was spot-on. We stayed in touch to coordinate timing, headcount and payment. He arrived 90 minutes before the event ready to rock. Not only was the food absolutely amazing, but Chris' excitement and enthusiasm made the event that much more fun.

The process of finding a caterer for our cocktail wedding reception was very stressful. There was a lot that I did not take into consideration, such as price and how much food would be needed to feed 125 guests. From the moment I first talk with Marylyn on the phone, I felt that I could trust her to cater our wedding and I was right. We did not have a sit down dinner; instead we had a cocktail style reception with passed hors d'ouveres, a taco station, and a slider station. Marylyn was upfront and honest from the beginning and constantly in contact to make sure we were comfortable with the choices we were making. She was able to negotiate deals for liquor, linens, and other rentals that we needed. She essentially took care of everything we needed to ensure that we would enjoy our evening. Marylyn and her partner, Neal are professionals and experts who not only provided us with excellent service, but were very humble, accommodating, and most importantly knowledgeable. We had an array of hors d'ouveres to choose from. For our reception, we had the option to choose 5 and it was hard to do that. I would highly suggest the jalapeño poppers! They were a hit at the reception. For tasty food and high quality service, I would highly suggest Marylyn and Neal.

Bacco Catering was a great choice for our event. We used them for a charity event at our store and they performed incredibly. Our guest were so pleased as many of them asked me " who are the caterers, this food and service is amazing". Thank you Lauren so much for such a great night.

Chef Rich provided a phenomenal experience for our daughter's birthday party! He was highly communicative through the entire process of getting ready for the party. Chef Rich showed early and his level of knowledge on how to prepare to cater to our guests eased our party day jitters. This gave us the opportunity to handle other aspects of the party as guests arrived. During the party he was once again great in providing a delicious meal that everyone enjoyed. Next time we host a party we are definitely calling Chef Rich!

From start to finish, Tamara was a dream to work with!! We threw an engagement cocktail party for 45 people, and Tamara worked with us during the weeks that we spent planning, to make sure every detail was perfect along the way. Communication was extremely fast (mostly over email, which made it very easy to get some planning in during work hours). We opted for a tasting before the party, so that we could choose exactly what we wanted, and it was fantastic! Everything was absolutely delicious, and the presentation was beautiful. After that we were sure the party would be perfect. We ended up choosing the sliders, chicken tacos, pork empanadas, truffled mushroom wontons (a BIG hit), grilled cheese toasties with tomato soup (a HUGE hit), and crab cakes. As for the actual event, the before, during and after went as smoothly as we could have hoped for. Pre-party setup was quick and efficient. The food prep and distribution during the party was very professional - all of the food was served to our guests warm and fresh, and no one left hungry. In fact, there were just enough leftovers left over for me to enjoy the next day :) All in all, Tamara and her team helped make it a really special event, and I would recommend her to anyone!

He came prepared and was very pleasant. He came with a server who served the food and cleaned up afterward including the dishes. The food, filet mignon was done perfectly medium rare, the salmon and chicken were all done well. My guests were very impressed with his food including the salad and pasta before the main course. I had a birthday for 17 guests. I would definitely use him again.

My man Adolfo is awesome, awesome, and awesome! We had him cater our wedding on July 7, 2018. He was super considerate from the beginning. We wanted something Asian, Mexican, as well as American. Adolfo was able to come up with a menu that fulfills all these expectations and are very reasonably priced. After a few email and phone exchanges, he offered us to do a free tasting! The tasting was terrific. Whenever we cannot decide between two dishes, Adolfo offered us to do half and half for our buffet dinner. After we paid the deposit, Adolfo stopped by our venue twice to check it carefully in order to get prepared for our big day. On the wedding day, everything went smoothly and all our guests are extremely satisfied with the food, especially my aunt who is extremely picky :) Adolfo also decorated the food nicely. Food names were written on cute chalkboards :) Waitresses from Adolfo's team are also super considerate by serving my wife and I at the sweetheart table. My wife and I recommend Adolfo wholeheartedly. We especially love his hors d'oeuvres: peking duck roll ups, beef summer rolls, beef taco, and mini pizza! We felt we did not have enough of his food and really want to hire him for all our future events.

We had a wonderful time at our group cooking class at La Pulperia. Chef Carlos and his team were so gracious (accommodating of food allergies) and the food was delicious - empanadas, salmon tartar, guacamole and ricotta gnocchi (which we learned how to make). We enjoyed making one of their signature cocktails and sipped wine (and tequila). Thanks to Chef Carlos and everyone at La Pulperia for such a fun and unique time. Also, thanks so much to Tyler for setting everything up!

Peter and his team were absolutely amazing. Not only was he great at communicating with me prior to the event, but he also offered many delicious options for the menu to ensure there would be something for everyone at my party. The team was on time and very respectful of the staff and the space, putting together a lovely set-up with flowers (!) that made the event feel that much more special. The food and drinks were delicious. My personal favorite were the pulled pork sliders and mojitos, but everyone raved about how delicious all of our appetizers were. Peter even sent a special plate over to me (the host) to ensure I'd have a chance both to eat and sample his delicious menu. I cannot say enough about the friendliness of him and his staff throughout the night. They were just so thoughtful and professional. I would (and will!) absolutely hire Peter and Creative Table Catering again in the future. My friends were also very impressed by him and the value of the services he offered at my event. In a city with innumerable options for caterers, I would highly recommend Peter for any event you have. He made my special night a celebration to remember.

We hired Chef Stef to cater our office holiday party (around 9 people). His prices were reasonable. He was prompt and very responsive to any communication. He arrived early to set-up and was very friendly. The food was great! We got chicken marsala, salmon, salads, rice, vegetables and sandwiches. All the food was fresh and delicious. I would recommend his services and will use him again in the future.

The food was excellent. Every customer expressed how much they enjoyed the good. The favorite by far was the steak and cheese! Prices we very reasonable. The only complaint I would have was it took a long time to get the food once it was ordered. The wait time for some people was about a half an hour. That still would not prevent me from hiring him again.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How do you find a good caterer?

Reviews, interviews and menu tastings will help you find the right catering choice for your big day. Start by screening possible wedding caterers based on past reviews. If a caterer you are interested in has a review that concerns you, ask them about it; how they respond will be very telling. Next, ask about their availability for your wedding date.

If the wedding caterer is available on your date, it’s time to talk about menus and prices. Be clear about what your maximum budget is find out what choices this will allow you. Caterers may custom-create a menu for your event, or they may have menu templates within different price ranges that can guide your decision. A clear budget gives the caterer clear parameters within which to work and offer creative suggestions. Schedule a menu tasting to confirm you love your wedding menu. Once you have a menu and date, and have paid a deposit to reserve the caterer’s services, confirm additional details including when the food will be delivered to the site, what kind of service will be provided, how many servers will be onsite and for how long, and who is responsible for setup and cleanup. The more specific your contract, the fewer worries you’ll have on your wedding day. Get more smart hiring tips here.

Do you tip a wedding caterer?

Tipping 15 percent to 20 percent on a $3,000 catering bill can feel daunting — especially in light of all the other costs of throwing a wedding — but tipping your wedding caterer is standard practice. Be sure to ask your caterer about their specific policies. Many catering companies include gratuity as a line item on their bill. If tipping is not automatically included in your total, a good approach is to tip all the people involved the day of the event rather than paying one lump sum to the catering company. For each server and bartender, you can tip $20-$50, depending on how long they were onsite and whether they did exceptional work. You can also tip the chef; experts suggest $50. It’s also a good idea to tip the catering manager, the point-of-contact person who keeps the catering service running smoothly the day of your wedding, ensures all the food looks beautiful and is plentiful, and resolves any mishaps. Industry pros recommend tipping the catering manager $100-$200. If gratuity is not included and you’re tipping individuals, set aside $200-$500 in cash to be safe.

How much does wedding catering cost per person?

Wedding catering costs will always vary based on the number of guests you’re inviting, the menu you want to serve, and the way the food will be served to your guests. As you interview wedding catering companies, you’ll be presented with a cost per person for various menus. On the low end, wedding catering may cost approximately $15-$18 per person. This would include prepared food only, with no setup or service of any kind. The starting price for a simple buffet meal with minimal service typically averages $22 per person. Opting for the same menu with all organic ingredients could raise your costs to about $33 per person. A moderately upscale menu (finer ingredients, more elaborate presentation) could range from $24 to $34 per person. High-end wedding catering cost truly has no limit. Lobster, filet mignon, specialty seafood, organic ingredients — menu choices like these can boost your cost per person up to $150 and more.

How much does it cost to hire a caterer?

Catering prices depend mainly on how fancy you want the food and service to be and how many guests you’ll have. When you’re first looking to hire a caterer for your event, consider how many guests you’ll have and your total food and drink budget. The national average for event catering is $340, but catering prices can range into the thousands depending on your menu, guest count, and service.

Event catering is a broad term that covers everything from fully prepared, ready-to-eat food that the hosts plate and serve themselves to full-service, multicourse meals, including rental of linens, glassware and other items, with service staff organized by the catering company. Usually a caterer will determine cost based on the type of event you’re having, how many guests will attend, the level of service you desire, and what type of menu you’d like to have. For example, if you have a set catering budget, say $1,500, and you plan to have 50 people attend, that means you have $30 per person for food. If you have the same budget with 100 people, you have $15 per person for food. In this way, the number of people you want to attend your event and the level of food you want to serve them determines how much catering will cost.

What should you look for in a caterer?

A delicious meal is a critical element of a successful wedding, with happy guests fondly remembering your fabulous wedding food. The right caterer for you will be:

  • Available: Even the best caterer is no good if they aren’t available on your wedding date. Ask early before you get your heart set on someone.
  • Affordable for you: Find a caterer that you can afford. Having a spending plan ahead of time will mean you won’t overspend on food.
  • A good personality fit: Wedding planning is stressful, so work with someone that you can get along with and communicate with easily.
  • Experienced and recommended: Ensure the company has a proven track record with events of your size and the references to back it up.
  • Transparent about money: Steer clear of shady pricing. Find a caterer who is very clear about costs and is happy to talk you through budgets and pricing options.
  • Transparent about food: Find someone who is clear about where they source their food from and where it is prepared.
Hire skilled professionals for absolutely everything.
