Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How much does it cost to build a deck?

The cost of building a new deck or porch is $1,500. However, this price can vary depending on a few different factors. The square footage of the space, the type of materials to be used, the intricacy of the project and your specific region can cause the price to fluctuate. To find out how much your new deck will cost, get free estimates from the best deck contractors near you.

Does a deck increase home value?

A back deck may (or may not) increase your home’s value or attract potential buyers if you’re looking to sell. According to the Remodeling Impact Report: Outdoor Features, a new wood deck with an estimated construction cost of $10,000 recovered $8,000 for the overall recovery of 80%. Still, 9% of realtors suggested that home sellers should add a new wood deck before putting their home on the market, and 4% said this project has helped closed deals.

The impact of adding a new deck will likely depend on its material (wood, composite, etc.) and where you live. For example, if you live in an area where people rarely spend time outside because of the weather, it’s reasonable to predict that prospective home buyers might not rate a deck highly on their list of must-haves when looking for a new home.

When in doubt, consult with your realtor or a real estate expert to figure out if adding a new deck to your home is the right move to increase your home’s value. If it is, contact the best deck contractors near you to get free estimates and start planning your project.

Who is a carpenter and what do they do?

Carpenters are skilled craftsmen who build things out of wood. Depending on what the carpenter builds, they may be referred to by various names. A framer is a carpenter who puts up the framing on a house. A trim or finish carpenter installs the finishing touches of prefabricated or custom trim and detail work once a house has been built and the walls are up. A furniture maker or woodworker builds furniture — such as tables, beds and dressers — out of wood. A cabinetmaker is a carpenter who builds custom and semi-custom wood cabinets. If you’re having a home built or remodeled, your general contractor will either provide or subcontract the carpentry work for the framing, cabinets and trim. You can hire a carpenter directly to update the trim in your home, build you a piece of custom furniture, or repair or replace your wood cabinets.

What’s the best way to set up a consultation or an appointment with a general contractor during the COVID-19 pandemic?

To set up a consultation or appointment with a general contractor during the COVID-19 pandemic, start by performing an online search for local professionals near you.

Message the contractor, and see if they are willing to set up a video consultation call instead of an in-person site visit. With video chat, the contractor may be able to assess the scale of the project, give you better information on what needs to be done and perhaps provide an estimate. Be sure to discuss virtual payments, as well as general strategies for staying safe.

What should I ask a deck contractor?

One of the first questions you should ask is whether the contractor has the proper license or insurance. To be a licensed contractor in many states, they must have the experience and knowledge to pass the requirements from your state’s licensing board.

You should also inquire if they have done work related to your specific project. Just because they’re a contractor, that doesn’t mean they’ve built a deck or an addition like yours. Ask for photographs of decks they've built in the past, and go online to read reviews from past clients.

You also need to ask for a free estimate from several contractors so you know how much the project will cost you (and so you can pay the best price).

Can I use digital payments to pay for general contractor services?

Currently, many general contractors are using common digital payment services like PayPal, Venmo, Square Cash, Zelle, Google Pay and more. And more will likely adopt these and similar platforms as coronavirus continues to force companies to take on digital capabilities.

Contact general contractors beforehand to discuss whether they accept digital payments, and take all necessary measures to meet social distancing recommendations. You can also compare general contractors side-by-side online to see which ones accept digital payments.

How do you find a good carpenter?

To find a good carpenter near you, do the following:

  • Use Thumbtack to find a list of carpenters in your area.
  • Filter the list by selecting a specific carpentry service, such as general carpentry or cabinetry.
  • Identify carpenters who have high ratings.
  • View the carpenters’ profiles and learn more about their specialties.
  • Read their customer reviews and look at photos of their past work.

After you get a good sense of their quality of work, make sure the carpenter has the necessary credentials in your state. Then, request several cost estimates for your project(s).

How can I find out if a general contractor is considered an essential COVID-19 service provider?

To find out whether a general contractor is considered essential in your area during the current coronavirus pandemic, visit your city or state’s government website, which will have information on essential services.

Find information on national recommendations by visiting CISA’s Identifying Critical Infrastructure During COVID-19 webpage. However, not all jurisdictions follow CISA’s definitions of critical infrastructure.

Is it hard to build a deck yourself?

If you don’t have the skills, experience and qualifications, building a deck may be difficult for you to do on your own.

Structural integrity is key when constructing anything, but especially something you plan to have your family and friends use regularly. The safety of the structure takes careful planning and experience.

Professional contractors have the knowledge to make a safe, beautiful deck for you. They also know the proper permits and insurance required to legally build a new deck or remodel a porch in your city.

AB Solutions took our concept to upgrade our deck and made it a reality. Their work crew paid attention to detail and offered helpful suggestions throughout the course of the project. While a straight forward deck facelift, the job required coordination with subcontractors all while working in a confined space in downtown Washington DC. We especially appreciated the opportunity to meet with suppliers and review the range of materials available. Our building supplier introduced us to a new decking material that reflects heat which will allow us to use our deck even on the most sunny days. Thank you AB Solutions for a wonderful finished product. We highly recommend them!

Put in a request on Thumbtack and Deck Wonders responded straight away and was able to come out and give a reasonable estimate and thoroughly checked our decking for damage Jorge then took the time to go through all the areas that needed to be replaced or treated and explained exactly what they were going to do. After a short time to get materials and the paint we picked out, they scheduled a time to perform the work and showed up promptly They worked quickly, but more importantly did a great job and went over everything that they had performed and gave some tips for maintenance to keep the deck in good shape for the next couple of years Would definitely recommend to anyone needing deck work done!

Dany and team built my deck. The structure itself seems to be good and solid and I’m satisfied. But some of the other details weren’t all that great. When they dug in the yard they tossed the dirt everywhere and covered the grass so now I’ve got mud and spots where the grass died. They did a good job with painting but didn’t paint all sides of the deck trim and wanted to charge extra to paint the pergola. I also wish he’d advised about adding rocks under the deck for runoff. They also just laid the pavers in the ground with little alignment and no sand base for evenness. The price was competitive, the work was timely, but the overall quality was average.

Dwayne and his team were phenomenal staining my back deck and wood patio underneath. He is a true professional, shows attention to detail and the result is a beautiful deck. Also Dwayne is a great communicator and keeps true to his word about showing up when he says he will or letting me know if weather, etc might hinder the process - something I really appreciate. Fair pricing. I have more projects to do with this old house and plan to call Dwayne again. Highly recommend!!

Dany and his crew did fantastic work. He built a deck, prepared and sodded our lawn, and created a new concrete path. He was able to come out within hours to give us a competitive estimate. He then started the job on time working 8-10 hours a day to complete the entire project in four days. They were professional and clean. We couldn't be more happy with his work and we can't wait to have cocktails on our new deck. It was a pleasure to work with him.

Great job at a very competitive price. Staining an Ipe deck requires both skill and attention to detail and Rob brought both to this project. Not only would I recommend him to others but we will be having him back in the future for additional oil treatments as needed.

Jose performed the work in a timely manner, and the craftsmanship is excellent. I would fully recommend using JAV on any future projects. The work they performed for me included reinforcing my deck to make it more structurally sounds, as well as replacing some rotten planks with new wood.
