I am a bathroom remodeling contractor in DC and couldn't get to do a bathroom demo and I found Ed's company through Thumbtack and was the top rated service provider on the requests. Service was great and was always able to get into contact with either Ed or one is his managers. Recommend for demo work.

Kelvin did a fantastic job on a variety of projects for our house. We were impressed with his timely installation of three bathroom faucets and asked him back to paint a ceiling, repair a damaged door and install an outdoor light fixture. He can truly do it all, in a timely fashion and at a very reasonable price! Highly recommend!

We had a long list of things to be done before listing our home for sale. Jenrii with Ordonez Home Improvement did an excellent job tackling every project. Jenrii enclosed the landing where we had removed a handicap ramp - this was not an easy repair and required good carpentry skills. He also installed new closet wood bi-fold doors in a basement bedroom. Again, not an easy task as they had to be “fitted” to the closet. His troubleshooting skills were evident here. He replaced two old light switches, four electric outlets, and a bathroom vanity light fixture. These were only a few of the things he did. Jenrii is very professional, polite, thorough, and responsive. He texted us each morning on the days he worked to let us know what time to expect him. He works quickly and does excellent work for extremely reasonable rates. I would not HESITATE to recommend him for small jobs to larger remodeling projects. I was a commercial real estate project manager for 15 yrs, building shopping centers and office buildings - so I can definitively say that Jenrri knows what he is doing and does it very, very well.

David and his crew were very professional. They built a new wall, installed a door and finished all drywall for our renovated bathroom and linen closet. David was very accommodating and paid attention to our special needs, double checking specifics with us along the way. He was very easy to work with and super nice. We are super happy with the results!

I had a nightmarish safety-related electrical problem involving of all places, my childrens' bedrooms! I brought in 6 different electricians for quotes/opinions. Everyone else I talked to said it was impossible to fix without tearing down the plaster walls and suggested I either get really good smoke detectors or do something like power the rooms with extension cords!!! But Giovanni (Rolando G.) said "No problem, I can fix it. I do this work all the time." And he DID fix it. Correctly. On time. Without tearing down the walls! It was nothing short of a miracle. He saved the day! That is experience and work ethic for you, folks! Price was fair too. Now many of the other contractors I had working on the house have asked me for his contact information, and my real estate agent is referring her clients to him as well. And I am sleeping well at night. Will absolutely continue to use him in the future, and have already used him for other projects. He gets my highest recommendation for skill, professionalism, work ethic, ease of communication, value, punctuality, and the kind of rare expertise that comes from intelligence, know-how, and years of experience. Thank you, thank you!!!

Jose with Brandon contractor was fantastic. Jose and his team submitted the most competitive and thorough bid out of all the competition and proved to be very flexible with timing too. I elected to purchase all the supplies for my bathroom remodel and Jose did everything to help me in that process. Couldn't be happier with the final product.

After meeting with four different general contractors, Mr. Marvin Guzman with Baiza Construction, Inc showed his best attitude to take part on a serious complete home improvement we had for our 1956 home. He didn't only provided a quick estimate, But time frame to complete and over all his price. My project was based on a full 2 bathrooms remodeling, plaster walls removal/replacement, insulation, plumbing, electrical, kitchen remodeling and about 2500 square foot of hardwood floor installation. My best recommendation to future hires and families of his great quality work. My contract worth 86k were put on the best hands.

Erick and his team did a kitchen remodeling project for me in Fairfax. They installed recessed lighting, removed the bulkhead moved the air vent that was in the bulkhead, installed the cabinets and backsplash, installed new appliance and a new sink, faucet and installed new breakers for the new appliances. They did everything in a professional, neat and timely manner. He even came on a Sunday to accommodate my tenants schedule. My tenants told me that they have never seen any contractors who left the house clean and tidy at the end of each day. He was a true pleasure to work with and made the project easy even though I live 800 miles away. I highly recommend Ordonez cleaning service. He has earned my trust and I told him that I will count on him to take care of my house. In Virgina.

This was our second time using Thumbtack and it was a great experience. We received multiple quotes for drywall work in our kitchen and bedroom to repair damage from a plumbing leak. The Langway brothers provided the best quote and had the experience and reviews to make us comfortable using them. We had guests coming in town so even though it was the holidays they rearranged their schedule and managed to come the very next day. Paul Langway performed the work and exceeded our expectations. In addition to doing a spotless repair job he also fixed some of the underlying issues which were not part of the original quote. He kindly did this free of charge. To have a contractor stick to their original quote and then do work above and beyond without charging more is pretty rare these days. It was also a pleasure to meet Paul and have him in our home as he is a great guy with which to interact. We will definitely use them again.

Mr. Witherspoon completed a shower wall remodeling project for me. The job took two days and he was here within 15 minutes of schedule each time, despite heavy traffic and poor weather. I was extremely impressed with the amount of personal pride he took in his work and thrilled with the quality of it as well. He is very well trained and knowledgeable with multiple skills in numerous professions. The estimate he gave me was the lowest of about eight others and it came in well within budget. Can't say enough good things about this company except I will definitely be hiring him again in the future. I highly recommend.

Mr. James Litman was extremely professional in his demeanor, very detail oriented. Never too busy to answer any question. With my hectic work schedule I would sometimes need to text Mr. Litman late in the evening. I could always expect a response before the next day. I did comparison shopping with other contractors and his proposal was lower and more affordable. My hardwood floors, designer paint job and bathroom remodel was top notch. I’m happy to turn the key and enter my home. Would use Unlimited Resources for my next home improvement project. Very satisfied!

I cannot say enough good things about United Contractors. I had to remodel my kitchen, and after having to suffer a bathroom remodel with another company, I was skeptical about having to go through this process again. However, I was lucky enough to find Carlos and Ulrich. They were simply great- professional and honest. Not only did they provide me with the best rate I could find but also their work was impeccable. They delivered what they had promised within the established time frame. I know they will be my first choice in my future works and I recommend their services to anyone who is doing a small or big project.

Julio has been so good to work with that we have continued to hire him for bigger projects. Starting with replacing tile on a kitchen backsplash, he impressed us with thoughtful ideas that made our project better, sometimes cheaper. We then hired him to refinish our basement. His ideas have proven functional as well - one idea was to relocate ductwork so we no longer have to duck under a soffit in the basement, which opened it up immensely. He’s timely, thoughtful, and extremely nice. We trust him with our repairs.

Dominik is a nice guy. His pricing was better than most and the quality of work was good. The project dragged longer that initially estimated but the main issue I had with Dominik was that he was hard to get a hold. As far as schedule goes he overpromised and under delivered. This was a complete kitchen remodeling project that required different set of skills. In the end everything turned out fine and the kitchen looks great. I would recommend him based on the price and my belief that most likely I will have the same scheduling issues with most good contractors that don't brake the bank.

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How do I plan a bathroom remodeling project?

If you’re stumped on how to plan a bathroom remodeling project, it pays to hire a designer. This is especially important if you’re changing your bathroom layout in any way. Designers create contractor-friendly drawings indicating exactly where each tile and fixture will be installed, down to the light switches. This investment might cost you $300-$500 but save you significant frustration and miscommunication, while ensuring you get precisely what you want.

If you’re going to do your own design, planning a bathroom remodeling project means being organized and planning ahead. Create a general outline of what you want and the budget you have. Identify the specific fixtures, tiles, paint and vanity you prefer. Get all this organized before requesting quotes from two to three reputable general contractors. Once you find the right pro, get a written contract outlining scope of work, materials that will be used, timeframe and payment schedule. Communicate clearly about when to order your materials so they are ready and waiting by the time the contractor gets the permits. Your job from here is to communicate clearly, pay the contractor as the work progresses, and enjoy your remodel when it’s done.

Where should I start when remodeling a bathroom?

Bathroom remodeling doesn’t have to be overwhelming. Before starting a bathroom remodel it’s crucial to know what you want and have a clear understanding of your maximum budget. If you’d love all marble fixtures but have $3,000 total, you will have to compromise. Being realistic about materials and money before you even contact a contractor will have you on the road to success. Here are some simple steps to follow in the planning stages of bathroom remodeling:

  • List your remodeling priorities in order of importance (e.g., 1. New shower head, 2. Replace flooring, 3. Install recessed lighting, etc.).
  • Calculate what you can realistically afford to spend on your bathroom remodel. Identify an “all in” price — meaning the absolute maximum you’re willing to pay, as well as what you’d prefer to spend.
  • Gather ideas from Pinterest about colors and finishes.
  • Research the costs of the materials and finishes you want and begin making choices about what is and isn’t possible to fit into your budget (once labor is included). If you’d like to stay under $10,000 total, but really love a $2,000 tub, plan to downgrade in other areas.
  • Request quotes from at least three reputable general contractors, share your vision and ideal materials, and work together from there.

How long should a bathroom remodel take?

With proper planning and a good general contractor, your bathroom remodeling project doesn’t have to take forever. The construction phase of the project will always vary based on your scope of work, the square footage and the condition of your bathroom under the surface layer. Inevitably an 80-square-foot master bathroom with major changes will take longer than a 25-square-foot guest bath undergoing a minor renovation. For a smaller bathroom, a facelift — the industry term for sprucing up the surface layer (such as paint, vanity, tiles or light fixtures) but keeping the existing footprint of the space — may take five to eight working days, as long as there are no surprises like mold waiting when the old vanity comes out. A more complex bathroom remodel that revamps the shower area (customizing the plumbing, installing tile and changing the shower door), updates the flooring and cabinetry, and adds new paint and new lighting could take anywhere from one week to three weeks. A full bathroom remodel that guts the room, changing the footprint and moving the electrical wiring and plumbing lines, could take four to eight weeks or more. To keep your bathroom remodel on schedule, have your materials ordered and waiting, and don’t make any change orders once construction begins. Planning is key to keeping a bathroom remodel on schedule.

How do I remodel my bathroom?

Bathroom remodeling is made up of three general phases. The first phase is the planning and permitting phase, in which you determine exactly what you want, what materials and finishes will be used, and what the end product will look like. If you’re competent with design you can handle the planning yourself, or you may hire an interior designer to guide you. During this phase you’ll also hire a general contractor who can help execute your remodel vision, coordinating and overseeing all the subcontractors required to do the bathroom remodeling (plumbers, flooring pros, etc.). When your plan is finalized, your contractor should obtain permits for the work you want done. During this time you’ll work together to order all the materials so they’ll be ready and waiting when it’s time to start construction.

The second phase is construction. Bathroom remodeling typically starts with demolition, removing the old floors, shower and vanity to make way for the new. Delays in delivery of materials, or changing your mind and ordering different materials halfway into the project, will mean that construction has to pause until the new materials arrive. Each subcontractor is dependent on the next to do their work, and the general contractor should keep things moving along at the proper timeline, ensuring that the right materials are available and dealing promptly with any unexpected repairs, such as damage discovered behind the walls or under the floor. The general contractor will also coordinate inspections from the necessary officials if you’ve moved load-bearing walls or done electrical or plumbing work. After construction is complete, the final phase of bathroom remodeling is addressing your punch list. These are all the items that need to be corrected before final payment is handed over to the contractor.

How much does it cost to remodel a bathroom?

Nationally, the average cost of bathroom remodeling is $14,000. Bathroom remodels can vary widely, from standard makeovers to luxurious master bathroom revamps. The factors that affect your bathroom remodeling cost are the finishes you choose (marble tiles can cost 20 times as much as standard subway tiles), the square footage of the project, regional labor rates in your area and the scope of work. Changing the layout or size of the bathroom will also raise costs. Moving electrical wiring and plumbing lines will also dramatically increase costs, as you’ll need to hire plumbers and electricians to handle the work. What’s happening behind your walls and under your floor will also affect bathroom remodeling cost: Rot, damage or mold can lead to additional work and charges. Overall, bathroom remodeling may offer great return on investment and also improve your daily life. Here are some examples of average bathroom remodeling costs:

  • 6-foot by 6-foot bathroom remodel: $3,500, including labor and materials.
  • Standard renovation: $6,500-$10,000. Price includes labor and materials the customer has purchased. Labor may include taking out the shower and shower pan, installing new shower pan and shower, and installing new door, new vanity, new mirror, new bathroom fan, and all new fixtures.
    • Price variation depends on the quality of the finishes.
  • 10-foot by 6-foot bathroom remodel: $7,200, including labor and materials.
  • Mid-range renovation: $12,000-$15,000. Price includes labor and materials the customer has purchased.
  • Upscale renovation: $35,000 and up. Price includes labor and materials. Items might include digital displays for fixtures, multiple shower heads and custom showers.
