What does a Spanish tutor do?

The goal of a Spanish tutor is to help students improve their Spanish reading, writing, comprehension, and conversation skills. The tutor’s approaches may vary, depending on whether the instruction is individual or a group class. Many Spanish tutors practice immersion — meaning they will speak only Spanish with their pupils. For students with little to no Spanish experience, the Spanish tutor may use a mix of Spanish and English to accustom their students to speaking the language.

A Spanish tutor can offer a wide range of services to their students. For students currently enrolled in a Spanish class through their middle school or high school, a Spanish tutor can help them with homework and language practice, as well as expanding their understanding of their current school curriculum. For adults, Spanish tutors will have different approaches based on that student’s need. Academics and those seeking high-level professional development for their career will often have more intensive and targeted lessons, drills, and interactive speaking tests. For adults who wish to learn conversational Spanish for fun or for travel, lessons may revolve around learning commonly used phrases and practicing speaking in relaxed settings.

How much do Spanish tutors charge?

Nationally, the average cost for a Spanish tutor ranges from $30 to $40 per hour. The cost for a Spanish tutor can vary depending on whether you choose private instruction or group lessons. Geographic location can affect cost; tutors in expensive cities and pricier regions command higher rates than in rural areas and small towns. The experience and education of the Spanish tutor will also affect their rates. For adult education, many people learning Spanish choose to join a Spanish school with tutors who teach group classes and also offer private tutoring for students. Typically these schools charge a monthly tuition that gives students access to a set number of classes per week, with private tutoring available at an additional cost. One example of an average cost is a monthly tuition of $200, which includes five 90-minute group lessons per month. Monthly tuition can vary depending on the school and the teachers. Short-term workshops are also a way to learn Spanish. Students may work with a Spanish tutor and group of other students at their skill level for a short period of time. One example of an average price is $100 for an eight-week course, with one 60-minute group class per week.

Noelle has really helped me improve my Spanish speaking abilities in our hour-long lessons. She can be intimidating at first because she doesn't hesitate to correct me when I am wrong, but my previous Spanish teachers often would let me get away with saying or pronouncing something slightly incorrectly, which ultimately did not help me learn to speak well. Noelle has done a great job helping me to unlearn the bad habits and Spanglish phrases I have picked up over the years. Though it can take awhile and be frustrating to break habits and build new ones, I can hear my Spanish improving bit by bit as a result of Noelle's help. She has also helped to build my confidence in my abilities, something I've struggled with for years. Some additional context in case it's helpful: I have been speaking Spanish my whole life to various degrees, but never became fluent, and had not had reason to practice for several years before beginning lessons with Noelle. We started by reviewing the more difficult verb tenses, and now primarily focus on speaking for an hour each lesson (my reading, writing, and listening comprehension have always been much better than my speaking ability).

Sara is a phenomenal tutor whom I highly recommend. I recently started a new legal job that requires me to read, write, and converse in Spanish at a professional level even though I have not studied Spanish in about 7 years. I chose Sara because I admired her dedication to studying languages. Because I wanted to focus on conversation, I liked that she seemed friendly and approachable. Even from her initial emails, I could tell that I would really like working with her. She and I quickly set up an initial lesson to gauge my abilities. She walked me through a few grammar and vocabulary exercises that reinforced the material I knew and quickly pinpointed material with which I needed help. Moreover, Sara always asked my input: what was I interested in learning? Are there things that I wanted to focus on more than others? Sara quickly surpassed my expectations with a complete lesson plan, structure, and schedule that was tailored to my level of Spanish and the areas I needed to work on. Before every class, Sara sent me a lesson plan that included vocabulary, assignments, and conversation topics for our next session. I appreciated having all of the materials at my fingertips. We conducted our lessons via Skype. It was helpful to be able to converse real-time with Sara via video while she could write me notes on vocabulary or grammar structure using Skype's instant messaging function. Sara asked me to send her materials that were relevant to my area of focus (reports and articles) so that she could structure our conversations around topics that would be immediately transferrable to my day-to-day work. Sara made sure that every lesson included themes and vocabulary that would be helpful in my work with my clients. She often offered insight from her own experiences and background that helped me learn about the different cultures in Latin America, knowledge that was invaluable when I was speaking with partners in the region. She is a born teacher; she knows how to make her lessons interesting and relevant to each student. Sara also went out of her way to include fun and useful tidbits and colloquialisms from the different countries I was working in at the time. I was able to impress partners on the ground with informal dialogue and a few words of slang, which gave me incredible confidence when speaking with them. Sara was also fantastic about following up with additional vocabulary or things of interest after our lessons. I always got an email from her after the lesson with other things or words that she thought I would find useful. Lastly, I really appreciated how kind and flexible of a teacher Sara is. I am at times a horrendous student: I never did my homework, practiced infrequently, and often had to rearrange our schedule. Sara never chided me for not completing my assignments but always made sure to remind me to do them. When I did manage to get something to her, she gave incredibly detailed feedback. She was always 100% friendly and bubbly despite our 8 am sessions, even when I felt super guilty about not having an assignment in on time. She was always encouraging and supportive. For someone like me who finds it hard to commit to lessons and often finds excuses to not attend, it made the world of difference that I always enjoy my lessons with Sara. After our initial sessions were over, I asked her to continue. As I am sure you will soon discover, Sara is an incredibly smart, organized, and gifted teacher. Thanks to her, my ability to speak Spanish has increased exponentially over the last few months. I really cannot thank her enough for how much her lessons have helped as I navigated learning Spanish while also starting a new job and moving to a new city. You will not go wrong with her as a tutor. I 100% recommend her and only worry that if she gets too popular I won't be able to see her as often as I would like.

Gina is EXACTLY what I was looking for! Our initial (FREE) meeting was an assessment of my abilities and goals and her plan on how to help me reach my goals. Our subsequent meetings/classes have been interesting , fun and productive. I truly feel I am learning and Gina is helping me build the confidence in speaking that I was lacking. I know each meeting is a "lesson", but Gina's personality and demeanor makes it feel more like I'm just spending time with a friend who is helping me learn Spanish!
