Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How much does it cost to hang a TV in D.C.?

If you need to hire a TV wall mount installer in Washington, D.C., you may find some pros who have a low estimated cost under $100. But several factors may affect the price of your project, the first of which is the type of install you want. These can range from a simple stand mount to more complex recessed wall mounts. The type of wall material — such as drywall, brick or concrete — also affects the amount of labor required, especially if you choose to have the cables concealed. Also, keep in mind that some pros may charge you by the hour, and others will have a flat fee.

How do I choose the best TV mounting service in D.C.?

Before choosing the best TV wall mounting service in Washington, D.C., read and compare customer reviews and ratings. These reviews can provide honest opinions of the company’s service from real customers. When reading the reviews, pay attention to the photos and any details about the companies’ ability to get the job done efficiently and correctly. Also, be sure to ask the right questions during your consultation call, including what you need to provide (the mount itself, screws, cables, etc.).

Where can I buy a TV wall mount in D.C.?

You can shop for TV wall mounts in Washington, D.C., by visiting various retailers, including electronics, department and hardware stores. You may benefit from shopping online or contacting smaller retailers and installation companies. While larger chain stores offer substantial inventories, smaller companies can deliver personalized service and guided product selection. For additional help and guidance, contact TV wall mount installers in the D.C. area. They might be able to sell you the appropriate TV mount or complete the installation process for you.

Where can I buy TV mount screws in D.C.?

Try visiting hardware, electronics and department stores in the Washington, D.C., area to find TV mount screws. You can also browse online if you prefer to do your shopping from home. Smaller retailers and TV mounting companies might also have TV mount screws (and other tools and equipment) to help you install your TV mount. If you need tips on how to choose the best screws for your TV mount, contact a professional in D.C. who can also install the mount for you -- and provide you with the screws you need for your setup.

How high should you install a TV mount on a wall?

The actual height you mount your TV will depend on the layout of your room. If you’re mounting it above a fireplace or in an alcove, the height of these structures will determine the mounting height of your TV. However, Bob Villa recommends positioning your TV 42 inches on-center in conventional rooms with standard seated viewing.

Can a TV be mounted above a fireplace?

You may be able to mount your flat screen TV above your fireplace for a more streamlined look in your living room. In fact, TV mounting professionals can hang your flat screen TV flush with a wall or from a tilting or full-motion bracket mount in any room in your home. A tilting or full-motion mount may be the best option above a fireplace so you can tilt the TV down for the best viewing angle. Whether the wall above your fireplace is brick, drywall, concrete, stone or plaster, most television mounting services can accommodate your needs. Hardier wall surfaces like concrete or brick will require more labor and expertise to mount, and will likely have a higher price range.

If you want your AV and cable wires hidden in the wall, you will also pay a higher price due to the added time and skill to properly drill the holes and run wires. Before mounting your TV above your fireplace, consult with the manufacturer about necessary distance from heat sources. If the space above your fireplace gets too warm, another location could be better for the longevity of your TV. Your television mounting services may take between one and two hours, or more depending on your home theater setup.

How much does it cost to mount a TV?

Elevate your home style with television mounting services. The national average price for television mounting services ranges between $100 and $130. Factors that can affect cost are the material of the wall you want the TV mounted on, whether you want the wires hidden, and any additional entertainment system connection you desire. It probably costs more to mount a TV on brick, stone or concrete than on drywall or plaster due to the added labor required to drill holes. For example, a company may charge an additional $99 to mount a TV on a brick wall. Here are some examples of average costs for television mounting services:

  • Basic TV wall mount: $40. Does not include bracket, device connection or strip management.
  • TV wall mount: $119. Includes bracket, mounting services, strip management system (for concealing external wires), and connection of all entertainment devices.
  • TV wall mount with wires hidden inside wall: $139.
  • Installation of additional electrical outlet: $65.
  • TV wall mount over fireplace with wires hidden: $179-$249.
  • TV wall mount and up to 5 speakers wall-mounted with hidden wires: $399.

Can you mount a TV in drywall?

Yes, it’s possible to mount a TV on drywall. To make sure the job is done right and you don’t end up damaging your wall or injuring yourself, consider contacting one of the best TV wall mount installers near you. When contacting professionals, make sure you tell them you wish to mount a TV in drywall.

What type of TV mount do I need?

There are several types of TV mounts, including fixed mounts, tilting mounts and full-motion mounts. A fixed mount is sturdy but offers no movement, and a tilting mount tilts vertically. A full-motion TV mount swivels and tilts for the maximum number of possible viewing options. You can also mount your TV from above with a ceiling TV mount. Whichever TV mount you choose, ensure it can support your TV’s weight and size. If you need help choosing and installing a TV mount, contact a TV wall mount installer near you.

How do I hide the wires to my wall-mounted TV?

You can hide wires from a hanging TV on a wall by putting them behind the wall. However, this requires some drilling or buying an in-wall power kit. Alternatively, you can use what’s called a “raceway” — a hollow metal or plastic channel — that runs down your wall and hides your cables from sight. To get the job done right, and avoid risking damage to your wall, hire a professional TV wall mount installer near you.

Damond of GBG TV Mount LLC did an amazing job mounting my 65 inch TV. He installed a mount, added an electrical outlet behind the tv, and also routed the cords through the wall. He mounted my Sonos sound bar as well. He was very friendly and polite and was on time. I would highly recommend him. Thank you again for your time and service.

The gentleman put a bracket on the wall so I can hand my tv on the wall. He had all the tools needed for the installation, had the hardware needed to mount the wall bracket and cleaned up the floor with his gas vacuum and cloth.

Caesar design wall mounted three tv's for me to perfection. They were super easy to deal with and so friendly. They were very professional, leveling and measuring all aspects of the project. I contacted TV Craftsmen because I wanted to install a full motion tv wall mount that I had already purchased for my flat screen. Marie quickly set up an appointment and John arrived to help with installation. Unfortunately, my tv was too old for my bracket. John tried to trouble shoot but gave me other options. Very pleased with their customer service and I look forward to working with them again!

Chris and his partner were great. He was always prompt in his responses and on time for the actual installation of two TVs. He provided great recommendations for the best way to mount our TV over the fireplace and built an outlet in the wall for another TV. On top of all that, he was very patient and friendly with our dog who kept trying to “help.”

Kevin installed a full motion mount for my TV and ran a behind the wall set of wires (3x HDMI cables and in-wall extension cord for power). A little late, but did a great job with install. Little patch up required to cover up some dry wall work (to be expected), but the room looks great. Not the cheapest, but with the hardware, extra labor and electrical wiring work required - well worth the price I paid. Above all - super friendly and flexible with my schedule. Thanks.

Damond was amazing! He is professional, polite, responsive and punctual. He installed my 65inch TV within 30 minutes and did a very professional job. He even showed me all the features my mount is able to do and demonstrated how strong the mount was. I had no clue about the type of the wall and studs I had, he had all the tools and went above and beyond to help me with the mounting need. If I stay in the area and move to another place, he is my go-to guy.

Overall recommend this company and Mohammad. They did a great job assembling and installing my TV mount into drywall. Both Mohammad and his coworker were polite and professional. I was able to get a same day appointment, which I booked on a Sunday at 3pm. The handymen came a bit outside the 2 hour window, but I mean it was Sunday night and they were able to squeeze me in with 3 hours notice, so no complaints from me. I did a bit of comparison shopping, and the $77 I was quoted for mounting a 50" TV was the best price I found. Even with on-wall cord-concealing ($112 total), it easily beat the Amazon TV Mounting price ($125 for 50 inch TV). FixTman doesn't seem like a small business, but I'd much rather pay them than Amazon.

FixTman sent a wonderful technician (Saeed) out to me on a Saturday night to install an articulated TV mount and a bike rack, both on crazy plasterboard walls that seem to have no studs in them anywhere! They did a great job in finding a solution to a problem I was unable to solve on my own. Their work was speedy, affordable, and highly professional. I'd recommend them to anyone in the DMV area.

Tyrone mounted a 59” TV on a plaster wall and concealed the cables. The end product looks professional and clean. Very happy with his work. He also securely mounted 2 heavy mirrors, hung a couple lighter weight paintings and installed curtains. All while we were taking care of our 3 month old, which often required leaving the room where Tyrone was working and talking to him in fits and starts. Tyrone was very patient, a good listener, and meticulous in his work.

Papa is professional, punctual, knowledgeable, and kind. He came prepared to help me install an extendable, articulating wall mount for my TV because my building has metal studs. He showed up with everything he needed, but when the job became more complex than anticipated, he only had to run out to his car for the needed supplies. He also helped me install a cabinet on another wall (also with metal studs) even though I hadn’t asked him about it beforehand! You would do well to hire Papa for any handyman tasks around your home. His work is solid, thorough, punctual, and a great value.

Patrick was responsive and offered me a pretty good price to wall-mount my TV. He came to my house to complete the job the day after I put my request on Thumbtack, which was awesome. He ended up doing a pretty good job however he drilled an exploratory hole in my wall during the installation and didn't have anything to fill it so I now I have to take care of that on my own. Also, I was paying very close attention during the installation and had to offer suggestions or corrections a couple of times, which would have bothered me more had he not given me such a good price.

I used Task America to install two televisions and a large mirror. I found Tyrone very responsive and accommodating in setting up the appointment. He arrived on time and got straight to work. I had a large television installation in my living room. He successfully ran the wires through the wall and mounted the TV working through a couple of interesting challenges in the wall as he went. He was friendly and great company as he worked. The other projects were more straightforward and he got them done quickly and to my liking. He also helped me install my sound system as I was having challenges. I would highly recommend his services to any interested parties. I plan on having him back in the coming weeks for the next round of projects.

Wish I had done this 10 years ago! I have always wanted my tv mounted on the wall, but didn’t want to risk paying someone and it not being done correctly. From the start Chris was responsive and professional. Scheduling an appointment was easy and convenient. He actually was early to the appointment and called to make sure that was OK. He completed the job within one hour. I had a 37” tv hung and I purchased the bracket from him as there were tons to chose from online, but I wasn’t sure which one would be best for my tv/wall. (If you want to save money you can buy one on your own in advance.) I also opted to have a new electrical outlet installed so the wires would not be visible. My online quote was $140, but in person the price ended up being $270. We agreed on this price before he started the project and even though it was higher than the original quote I feel that it was worth it based on the quality of the work performed. Also, as a woman it’s very important that I feel comfortable letting a man who I don’t know into my home. Chris was extremely professional & approachable and you simply can’t put a price on that.

No one ever came to mount the TV but they were nice so that's why I'm giving 2stars. I set up appointment they day of a snow storm. Was told when I set up I could get it installed that day or the following day. I choose the following day at 330. By 4pm no one had called or shown up so in contacted them. Was told bc of snow they were pushing all appointments back (understandable but having been informed would have been nice vice me waiting around for no one to come). Was then told that some one could still stop by that day but by 6pm that day. By around 7pm that night no one came or called so I had to cancel. Live in apartment building and was getting too late to start drilling and banging on walls. In short, waited from 3:30 to 7 to no avail. I chose them based off the excellent reviews people had not because they were the least expensive. They weren't. Second time someone from Thumbtack has been a no show for mounting TV. Just bad luck I suppose.
