The experience with my tutors have been amazing. They always made sure I thoroughly understood the material before moving on. They also showed genuine compassion for how the students were doing, both during the tutoring and after testing.

Finding a proper tutor for a student can be difficult. Many families go through 2 or 3 before they find the right fit for their child. The minute we talked with Mr. Stanley we knew we made the right decision. Along with his very bright son I was immediately comfortable in knowing my daughter was on the right track. Studying for the ACT and SAT within weeks of each other, they both made my daughter feel less stressed about these tests. Encouragements all the way through every subject taught and reviewed. Every time we spoke it was positive and assuring that she was going to excel. We would absolutely refer them to anyone we know that will be needing tutoring for these test including our 2 other children in the upcoming years. Thank you!!

I am so pleased with my decision to hire Andres as my college statistics tutor. Andres is kind, patient, and a incredibly talented tutor. I have been out of school for quite awhile; upon beginning my statistics course I felt incredibly lost and unable to complete the work. Andres was able to explain each and every concept I was struggling with in a way that I actually understood. After working with Andres I am fully confident that I will not only pass this class but I will excel. THANK YOU ANDRES!

Maria has a pleasant disposition, she is punctual, knowledgeable and adapts her classes to her students. My husband and myself are at different levels and still she manages to satisfy both our needs. She explains very well and she is using great material. I would recommend her very highly.

I've been very bad at math my entire life. I flunked algebra three times before I called Arbor Tutors. The tutor was very understanding and nonjudgmental. I can highly recommend Arbor Tutors.

Audrey is an incredibly smart and patient math tutor who knows how to get the best out of her students. We were looking for a math tutor to work with our daughter who has struggled with this subject throughout elementary and middle school. After spending time with Audrey, our daughter started doing better in class with her assignments, and with her homework, her confidence grew as her grades improved... No more fighting every night about math!!! After working with Audrey for one academic year, my daughter went from a “D" to an “A" student in math. She also did an amazing job on Florida’s math Standardized Assessment test for 8th graders. My daughter is now taking Algebra Honors in 9th grade and we have Audrey on speed dial!! Working with Audrey was one of the best decisions we have made in helping our daughter to accomplish her goals as well as keeping the peace in our home :o) We are looking forward to a great school year.

Sizemore Academy is reliable, communicates openly and most important opens up the mind! The Academy goes above and beyond to get the job done-24/7/365! She is only a phone call away if needed. Her core values are very honest and work with integrity and respect. She has tremendous perseverance! She is fun, interactive and visual with students. She does not give the answers away as some tutors do. She opens up a student's mind and engages it so they learn to figure and think for themselves. She recognizes strengths and great performances, but the best reward is when a student realizes this and takes off for the stars! My child is now in college and all things are possible with Louise Sizemore-a brilliant teacher!

Dr. Dubler is a skilled tutor that knows that taking the SAT is similar to activities like sports, dance and theater; there are many factors that influence someone’s performance. Dr. Dubler not only shares his passion for setting students up for PSAT and SAT test taking; but he provides applicable hints for students to think about in advance, such as: what to eat the week before the test, and many other tricks to the trade of successful test taking. He will arrive promptly and professionally and will assign homework in between his sessions and encourages his students to do what they can do, with the reality they have their normal extracurricular activities and homework to attend to. His longevity in this field speaks for his abilities to be committed to his passion for SAT tutoring. Dr. Dubler is very experienced and highly educated. He is an excellent match for students who do not mind being asked to explain their train of thought, as his expectation is a high level of interaction. This is one way he reinforces what he is teaching. He is also full on fun magic tricks along the way, which will certainly keep things as he likes them “entertaining.”

John Way was my teacher for Physics 1 and Physics C: ME. For the two years that I had him he was great. He always knew what he was talking about and would go in depth in his explanations, which allowed me to really grasp the concepts that he taught. When someone was struggling, he wouldn't just leave them behind, he would spend whatever class time he could on them as well as his lunch time and time after school. He is a teacher that everyone loves and cherishes at McArthur High School.

Adair's is such of special tutor because his teaching method builds a strong, an personal relationship with the student, he has become my son ally also my strong shoulder. As a tutor has filled a different role than our average teachers (my son is in a top FL magnet school) because he is creating a unique 1/ 1 close relationship. Personal relationships are foundational to any student success -- the more connected a student feels to his or her tutor, the more the tutor creates trust and respect, essential ingredients for students to learn well. Adair's true passion for teaching is something special and very hard to find these days.

Melinda worked with our daughter for two years. At the time our daughter was diagnosed with ADHD and she was struggling at school. Melinda was able to bring the best in her. Melinda taught her organizational skills, comprehension and memorization techniques and critical thinking. She helped our daughter in English, Social Sciences, Public speaking and writing. Our daughter went from a C student to an A student. Melinda gave her the boost and self confidence she needed to start high school. We will always be grateful to Melinda. Highly recommended.

Math Tutoring

New To Thumbtack

    About

Almost all math tutors focus exclusively on the math part of it only, using jargon that may not be clear at all, and want to work only with prospective "A" level students. I take a more realistic approach: not every student wants or needs an "A" and I also focus on reducing math anxiety and effective test taking strategies.

    Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How do you find a good math tutor?

Math home tutors are available for any age student, from elementary school to postgraduate studies. Rates will vary based on the tutor’s background, education and experience. To find a good math tutor, first determine your learning goals. Do you need help understanding and completing homework assignments? Are you preparing for the math portion of a standardized test? Next, read reviews from current and former students. Find someone with proven success helping students achieve their goals. If you want help on an ongoing basis, decide what your budget is and identify the tutors who fall within your range. Ask if there are additional fees for travel, as some home math tutors include travel costs in their rates and others charge extra. Ask about session length and the tutor’s teaching style, and whether they also offer online sessions or group sessions. Finally, schedule a single session with each of the math tutors you think are best to see who is the best fit.

How much do math tutors cost?

Math is a subject that’s challenging for many students. Fortunately, home math tutors can help students excel in math by working with them in focused one-on-one tutoring sessions. The cost for math tutors varies based on the type of math, the expertise and experience of the tutor, and geographic location. Pricing may range between $40 and $100 per hour, depending on the math subject. As a rule, the more complex the subject matter, the more the math tutor will charge for the lessons. The cost reflects the math tutor’s advanced studies and the work required for them to be able to teach on the subject. Frequency can also affect costs. Students can buy packages of lessons for a lower cost per session than buying individually. Nationally, the average hourly rate for a geometry home tutor is $50-$60. The national average rate for an algebra home tutor is $40-$50 per hour. For generalized math tutors, the national average ranges between $40 and $50 per hour. More intensive standardized test prep studies and math tutoring average $70-$100 per hour.

How much does home tutoring cost?

Investing in home tutoring is an investment in your child’s future. Home tutors work one on one with your child to address their challenge areas and provide room for intellectual growth that may not happen in a busy classroom. The cost of home tutors depends on multiple factors including where you live, the tutor’s background and education, the subject matter, and how often the tutor comes. Test prep home tutoring is typically more expensive than single-subject tutoring. Here are some examples of average tutoring costs:

    • National average cost for an algebra home tutor: $40-$50 per hour.
    • National average cost for a French home tutor: $30-$50 per hour.
    • National average cost for a geometry home tutor: $50-$60 per hour.
    • National average cost for a math home tutor: $40-$50 per hour.
    • National average cost for reading and writing home tutor: $40-$60 per hour.
    • National average cost for an SAT home tutor: $70 per hour.
    • National average cost for an ACT home tutor: $70-$100 per hour.
Hire skilled professionals for absolutely everything.
