Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What’s the best way to set up a consultation or an appointment with a house cleaner during the COVID-19 pandemic?

The best way to set up a consultation with a house cleaner during the COVID-19 pandemic is by using virtual, online tools. Start by performing an online search for local house cleaners. Message them to set up either a phone call or video call to perform a consultation. During this call, they can give you recommendations and may be able to estimate the cost of their services. Be sure to discuss whether they accept virtual payments and any precautions they can take to perform the job safely.

Can I use digital payments to pay for house cleaning?

Not only do many house cleaners accept digital payments through platforms like Zelle, PayPal, Square Cash, Google Pay, Venmo and more, but this may become more common as the COVID-19 pandemic pushes more service workers to digitize. This means you can pay your house cleaner without making physical contact or handling money.

If cleaning is absolutely essential during the current crisis, consult with the house cleaner beforehand to ensure a safe monetary transaction that complies with current government guidelines and recommendations for social distancing.

Are there ways to be safe if I hire a house cleaner when social distancing?

If you hire a house cleaner to clean the inside of your home, do not make physical contact. Stay at least 6 feet apart at all times, sanitize any surfaces after cleaning and wash your hands thoroughly. Exchange all payments digitally instead of with cash. When contacting a house cleaner, put a plan in place to ensure everyone's safety.

How can I find out if a house cleaner is considered an essential COVID-19 service provider?

A house cleaner is generally not considered an essential service sector during the coronavirus pandemic. To find out which services are considered essential, visit your city and state government, and read their guidelines. A national list of essential service providers can be found on CISA’s Identifying Critical Infrastructure During COVID-19 site. This webpage lists 16 different infrastructure sectors considered to be essential. However, not all jurisdictions follow CISA’s definitions of critical infrastructure.

Does a house cleaner need to enter my home?

Yes, in almost all cases a house cleaner needs to enter your home. However, a cleaner may not need to enter your home if they are solely cleaning outside areas.

There may be some cases in which a cleaner is necessary. If so, take precautions — avoid being in the same room, make no physical contact, sanitize any surfaces and pay through a digital service instead of using cash.

Do house cleaners offer remote or virtual services?

House cleaning is generally done in person, but some may be willing to offer remote services. If you find a house cleaner’s profile that states they’re offering remote services, contact the pro to talk about your options.

If you’d rather hire a house cleaner to clean your home when the pandemic is over, you may be able to book an appointment at a later date. Start by comparing local house cleaners in your area side-by-side.

Should I hire a move-out cleaning service or do it myself?

You may benefit from hiring a professional move-out cleaning service, depending on your budget, time frame and whether you will be getting a deposit back. Hiring a cleaning service takes the stress out of your move. But if you’ve had your house regularly deep-cleaned, or if your landlord will charge you for cleaning anyway, you can save costs by DIY-ing it.

What is the difference between a housekeeper and a house cleaner?

Although some house cleaning and housekeeping duties might overlap, a house cleaner is charged with the top-to-bottom cleaning of a home. House cleaner duties typically include basic and deep house cleaning, such as washing and sanitizing countertops, floors, tubs, toilets, kitchens and more.

Housekeepers or maids are hired to lightly clean and maintain certain aspects of the home. This might include dusting, washing dishes, changing sheets, doing some meal preparation and restocking the client’s groceries and personal care products.

It’s also worth noting that a housekeeper or maid is usually one individual employed to a home (sometimes hired as a live-in), while a house cleaner is oftentimes accompanied by a team of cleaners.

What are the different types of house cleaning services I can get?

There are several services offered by professional house cleaning companies, each suited for a different purpose. These services include:

  • Standard cleaning, which is a basic cleaning typically done on a weekly or monthly basis;
  • Deep cleaning, which is a detailed cleaning with more intensive work than a standard clean;
  • Move-in and move-out cleaning, which is a detailed service preparing a home for residents moving in or out;
  • Green house cleaning, which is a service that uses eco-friendly cleaning supplies and products.

Aside from the type of cleaning services available, homeowners may also choose daily, weekly, monthly or one-time services.

How much should you tip maids or cleaning services?

Tipping between 15 and 20 percent is considered an appropriate tip for maids and house cleaners — just as it would with a barber, food delivery driver or taxi operator. During the holidays, you might want to consider tipping a bit more.

It’s important to note that some housekeeping and maid services might include a tip within the service fee, which should be explained to you in the service contract. Talk to house cleaners in your area to find out what's included in their fees.

Ms. Garnet and her coworker just finished cleaning my house. They arrived right on time and were ready to get working. They were very thorough and exceeded my expectations. All my furniture, windows, vents, and blinds were cleaned and dusted. They were able to work some magic in my bathroom which I had been neglecting for a few months. They were able to remove all the soap grime and mildew from the grout in the bathroom without making the house smell like bleach! I have a smaller house (only a 2/1), but they were able to complete the entire cleaning in under an hour and a half. Overall an amazing job, and I look forward to them coming back.

After a 15 year relationship with my house cleaner, she and her family moved out of state. I was hesitant to start with someone new. I contacted Maria and she assured me that she and her team from Dedicated would take care of everything, including my worries. She was right my house was cleaned top to bottom, vacuming, dusting,,polishing, mopping and more. The kitchen and bathrooms were spotless. Iwas relieved and IMPRESSED with the service from Dedicated Cleaners andhave booked them on a bi-weekly schedule. Thank you Maria, Yolanda and Dayane. Marilyn in Dania

My first round with Halohs was honestly not good at all. After contacting them and letting them know that I was not at all satisfied with the deep cleaning that was performed on a move in house, they promptly scheduled a re cleaning and I really appreciated that. The ladies the came for the second round did an amazing job and they were very detailed. Because of my customer experience as well as the quality of the two ladies’ cleaning, I will be calling Halohs again. Happy New Year!

Avoid this company if you are not going to be at home or business supervising them, otherwise you are going to get overcharged and the service won't be good or completed. Quoted me one price with a cleaning time frame. I called and they gave me a lower price. Since I had supplies The results : Didn't follow instructions Didn't finish the job Didn't clean the oven Didn't clean the top of the stove Didn't lock any of the house locks after leaving Cleaners didn't put garbage bags on the baskets, or even asked where they were stored Didn't put the garbage outside as requested Took 2.5 hour longer than quoted. Charged me per hours instead what it was quoted, including for the time the cleaner were talking on the phone and chatting with the neighbors (I have cameras) Took double the time cleaning a home with 3 times the number of cleaners, and didnt even do a complete good job. I don't recommend this company

I was at work when they cleaned my home and i must say that i was very impressed when i walked I the door. I left a list on my kitchen table of things i would like to be done and they did everything i asked. Overall a great experience, and their personalities were great as well. I will hire them again.
