If you are looking for an amazing dog trainer that specializes in clicker training, you should definitely consider Brian Sugerman. He puts in his personal time and attention into your dog. He is an amazing trainer and has a really special talent for bonding with your dog . Im so grateful for Brian's help when we needed him . We used Brian for private lessons to teach our 4 month old puppy some commands and helped us with feeding and bathroom schedule. He is very professional , intelligent and gave me great insight . I would highly recommend Brian to train your dog using the clicker method. -Karen

Cliff is an exceptional trainer. We had a pretty severe case of aggression with our dog. Our dog is a 5 year old shepherd lab mix and 100 pounds so dealing with the aggression was pretty hard so we hired Cliff. We were a little nervous in the beginning because we are very protective of our "baby." Cliff showed great professionalism and is very skilled and trained trainer. We now trust Cliff 110% with our dog and he has taught us so much!!! Our dogs behavior has improved so much and even friends and family have noticed and commented. His past behaviors included biting, aggression towards other dogs on walks, not listening to us and overall stubbornness and if he didn't want to do it he wasn't going to. We still have things to learn and more training to do but our dog has definitely had a major improvement and continues to learn from Cliff. If you are looking for a trainer for your dog Cliff is your guy!

I would definitely recommend her to my friends and family. She showed me some tools I can use to use while training my puppy. You will not be disappointed!!!!!!!

Carol is a gentle, caring trainer. Our dog welcomed her at each session and had no fear of her. She trained him according to our needs and helped with a couple behavior issues as well. Our dog is a rescued three year old Terrier.

Very knowledgeable about unruly rescue young dog. Helpful advices. With construction going on in yard, they were able to board and train my puppy, who is so loveable but very energetic, and constant barking at construction activity. When I called for assistance, she came right away to pick up my puppy and board him so I could finish the construction in the yard without upsetting him.

I have called dog trainers all around the U.S., and Tackett Service Dogs in Palm Beach was the only company that actually cared! Love that they are a family owned company, and don't just care about the money. They take their training seriously, and truly care about each and every dog that they work with. I chose to work with this company out of all of the others that are local to me in Georgia.

Kathy was great. I learned a lot about our dog and how to continue the training she taught me. I had experiences with other dog trainers and was unimpressed. Kathy knows her stuff and was a pleasure to work with.

Joyce is a remarkable dog trainer. She is patient and kind and my dogs LOVE her! Joyce is very knowledgeable and worked hard to educate me to use her methods to train my Hunee! When we first went to Joyce at Our Dog Den Hunee was out of control in a fun way -now she's still fun but much more in control. We have mastered "sit", lay "down", "leave it", and walking on a loose leash. We are still working on "wait", "drop it" "come" (especially when Hunee is excited)! We look forward to our weekly training sessions with Joyce and so glad we found her!

Ashley truly loves what she does and is meticulous when grooming our Golden retriever. She is also an exceptional dog trainer for those of you looking for help in the manners department! 😉 Maggie enjoys her spa days! It is rare in this day and age to find someone who is honest, kind and trustworthy...Ashley is certainly one of those people. I highly recommend her to anyone looking for a great groomer!!

I believe anyone that has gone to any dog training 101, would not be able to compare it or compete with the wealth of information and personal training I have experienced in Americanidog training with Daniel Ratte. There are many challenges presented for our classes . My personal growth as a dog owner and learning the training aspects to gain the complete devotion and respect of my four legged best friend is truly remarkable. For me I can truthfully state Daniel Ratte is a highly rated dog trainer and has made a incredible difference in my life. and Oh What fun for me and my dog!!!!

Yes Dog Training has been a God-send. Stuart is great with our dog, Molly, and knew just how to address some dominant behaviors we wanted to correct. He also came very last minute to take care of her when we went out of town for a couple of days. Molly loves him and we love that he is trustworthy and responsible.

I have a blue Weimaraner who weighed 65 lbs by 1 year old. She had trouble with impulse control and constantly pulled when walking her. Every person and dog we encountered was her new BFF! I am petite and had trouble keeping her from jumping on passers by and from being dragged down the street. Brianna walked my dog and taught me techniques and gave me the tools to train my large puppy. It took a while to train my willful and high energy dog but I can now safely walk my full grown Weim, confident that we will enjoy our walk. Brianna is wonderful with animals, has a gift for working with dogs and training both the dog’s behavior and people on how to train their dog. Brianna is caring, knowledgeable, professional and easy to work with. in my opinion, her fees are very affordable. She has also helped me through my dog’s skin rash issues by recommending skin remedies which have been helpful as I do not like giving her antibiotics. I cannot say enough good things about Brianna and highly recommend her. She has been my Dog Whisperer for the past 2 years!

I adopted a one year old Boston Terrier mix who is extremely energetic. I forgot what it was like to have a young dog. Needless to say, I hired Kelly and have been so impressed. First of all, she is extremely professional, enjoyable, no nonsense and always punctual. She has a common sense approach to dog training and the results have been great. I would recommend her to anyone, as she has only proven to provide more than I ever thought I could get.

I have know Dave for a long time. I watched him train his Chocolate lab Coco from a pup to a Champion. She is a remarkable dog! He helped me train my little pug dog who was quite stubborn. Dave helped Teddy and me find the patience that it took to learn how to make him a well behaved member of our family. Dave is very professional and respectful with me and my wife and of our home. He has had full access to my home when we were away on vacation and has lived up to the trust that we put in him.

Carlos is an awesome canine trainer. He improved the relationship I have with my dog. I experienced the improvement after the first session. He spend a lot of time explaining the dogs behavior & taught me how to respond to each behavior. I now have an obedient dog while maintaining a balanced relationship. He has so much knowledge & experience. I did not realize my counter productive behavior until our sessions. I recommend Green to Alpha for all new dog owners.

      Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How old should a puppy be for training?

Dog training shouldn’t wait until you’re having behavior problems. If you get a new puppy, start from the beginning with professional training to give both you and your puppy the tools you need for a healthy relationship. Dog training is as much about teaching the owner how to interact with their new dog as it is about the dog learning to behave. Puppy training can start as early as eight weeks old. Trainers who offer puppy training programs may works specifically with dogs between the ages of 8 and 18 weeks old. Trainers can teach owners about potty training and how to deal with accidents, working with separation anxiety, and training your pooch out of destructive behaviors like chewing, biting and demand barking. Puppies will start to learn to walk on-leash and other basic skills.

In addition to behavior training, socializing your puppy is an important part of dog training. Socializing your dog means they become comfortable and confident in a variety of settings and have a great foundation for becoming a well-adjusted adult dog. After your puppy has had the proper vaccinations, you can start to introduce it to a variety of different dogs and people in safe settings.

Which dog training method is best?

The best type of dog training for both you and your dog depends on the outcomes you hope to achieve. If you want your dog to learn agility training, go to someone who specializes in those techniques. Regardless of whether you want your dog to learn basic behavior or competitive-level tricks, the majority of dog training is actually about training the owner how to communicate with their dog. Most professional dog trainers agree that a model of training based on positive reinforcement breeds a happy, healthy, well-adjusted dog. The alternative to positive reinforcement training is using force or aggression techniques like physical punishment or shock-collar training to get the dog to do (or not do) a behavior. While the dog may learn how to behavior as you direct, it is also learning to communicate with force and aggression, and will in turn use those behaviors on other dogs (or people) that are smaller or weaker than it is. Before signing up with a dog trainer, meet with the trainer and ask for references. Watch the trainer interact with your dog, and make sure they treat your dog with patience and firm kindness. Ask them questions about their training methods:

      • What type of training methods do you use?
      • What is your background and training, and how did you become a dog trainer?
      • How long do you expect that we will work together before we achieve the results I’m after?

How long does it take to train a puppy?

Dog training depends on the dog and how much homework the dog owner is willing to put in. Puppy training is similar to dog training in that the onus of the work depends on the owner learning new ways to interact with their dog. For a quick crash course, you can opt for a single, two hour smart-start puppy training consultation to teach you the ins and outs of being a new dog parent. You can learn how to manage potty training and what to do if the puppy experiences separation anxiety. As long as you’re willing to work on dog training a little bit each day, your puppy will quickly learn these new behaviors. If you’re not confident about training your puppy yourself, you can enroll in a 6- to 8-week puppy training course, with weekly lessons touching on everything from bite control to obedience. Puppies usually need to be at least three months old for group training classes. If you want more intensive one-on-one work, you can opt for private lessons. Some behavior problems can be resolved in one session if the dog owner learns and can implement new skills. In the case of more serious issues, 3 to 10 private sessions can typically correct challenges.
