We have a 7 mth old Boston Terrier (Lucy). I've had the pleasure of having Brian teaching me and helping me to understand her good and bad behavior. Brian's technique is great and helpful. He is professional and knowledgeable. Brian is still working with Lucy and she's still in training, but her progress is terrific. Brian is performing training on site/at our home and always prompt and flexible to schedule and reschedule as needed. Brian explains in detail about the click and treat method which is very effective. Lucy is very responsive to Brian's training and his method is extremely successful! I highly recommend Brian for helping/training the owners to understand their dogs behavior and for any additional help with dog training.

Excellent. Professional, arrives on time, works well with my dog and myself. He has given me SO much insight as to my dog's behavior and why she acts the way she does. I understand my dog better now. Love that he writes "homework" for us so I can refer back to that. Also if I run into a problem with my dog between sessions, he promptly texts me back and tells me how to correct the behavior (or how I should be responding to my dog). A+ highlt recommend Cliff! 😊

We've had one session with spencer (my dog), and the impact on the dog's behavior is amazing. Unfortunately because of scheduling issues on my part we could not meet again, I am looking forward to resume the training this coming Sunday as my schedule opens up. Really effective.

Wendy understands dogs and knows how to get the best behavior out of each individual dog (working with their needs and personality, and at their level). Not only were the classes straight forward with a positive approach but Wendy demonstrated time and time again she cares about dogs. My puppy was a rescue one and had a traumatic experience outside of class and Wendy went above and beyond to get Gemma back on track before the end of the puppy classes. She is personable and practical, and always willing to answer questions and provide help. This class has been a very positive experience, and I appreciate her care, knowledge and expertise with my Chihuahua. Nesira Baker, Gemma's owner

I have a blue Weimaraner who weighed 65 lbs by 1 year old. She had trouble with impulse control and constantly pulled when walking her. Every person and dog we encountered was her new BFF! I am petite and had trouble keeping her from jumping on passers by and from being dragged down the street. Brianna walked my dog and taught me techniques and gave me the tools to train my large puppy. It took a while to train my willful and high energy dog but I can now safely walk my full grown Weim, confident that we will enjoy our walk. Brianna is wonderful with animals, has a gift for working with dogs and training both the dog’s behavior and people on how to train their dog. Brianna is caring, knowledgeable, professional and easy to work with. in my opinion, her fees are very affordable. She has also helped me through my dog’s skin rash issues by recommending skin remedies which have been helpful as I do not like giving her antibiotics. I cannot say enough good things about Brianna and highly recommend her. She has been my Dog Whisperer for the past 2 years!

Mr. Otazo has been training my 8 month old (huge) puppy for about 4 weeks now, and I am so thankful for have coming across such a caring company as Atazo Animal Services is. I have met most of the employees and they are all so kind to Kane as well as I. Kane is very happy to have them around, he is not easy one and they have had all the patience in the world to help Kane become the best version of himself.

Jillian was wonderful to work with! She was easily reachable to schedule meeting MJ (our boxer/lab puppy) and helped us work out the best time to bring her for training. We decided to have MJ board with Jillian for 2 weeks to complete basic behavior training. We specifically wanted to work on the "puppy" biting, leash pulling and jumping or over excitement around other people and dogs. MJ and Jillian had a whole routine ready for us when we picked MJ up after two weeks!! She had her doing front, wait, place, pretty, weave, spin, down and roll over! I had guests over the evening of the day we picked her up and MJ was like a 180 from before we dropped her off. She was so well behaved, still with puppy energy, but better directed and not jumping all over people. We are extremely happy with Jillian! She also worked with us when we picked MJ up and offered us continued support as we now take over the continued working with MJ to cement the new skills she's learned!

It was a pleasure working with Amy! Amazing how in 1 hour with Ajax, he already reacts to his new command word "Ah Ah". I can see in his eyes he knows he's gotta behave. I'm the one who needs to do the work going forward, but it's so nice knowing exactly how and what I need to do in order to adjust Ajax's behavior. Thanks, Amy!

Mona is a natural dog person who has added to her great instincts with lots of education about dogs and dog behavior. She immediately connected with my dog and was patient and also a good leader, and I could tell my pup was more confident and comfortable around her. I would trust Mona with my animals and I would recommend that others trust her, too. Your animals are in good hands with Mona!

We have a 5 month old Goldendoodle that is a bundle of energy. Needed help with housebreaking, obedience, crating and leash walking. Marti assessed our dogs behavior and was confident she could work with her. We opted to send our dog with Marti for a 10 day boot camp and board her at her home. When our dog Harley came home Marti discussed all facets of her training and took the time to teach us hand commands and the proper cue technique to continue reinforcing what she has learned. Harley is 10 times more obedient, is a pleasure to walk, sits, stays and lays down on command. I highly recommend Marti for her knowledge and training skills. If you want a dog that you can be proud of give Marti a try you'll be glad you did!

Lisa has been a miracle worker for our puppy, Lucky. She has worked beautifully with my three young daughters and myself, teaching us effective positive reinforcement training techniques. Lucky is well on her way to being the well behaved happy dog we know she can be. With each training session we reinforce what we've already learned and build on it, steadily improving and having fun at the same time. Lisa clearly has the experience and expertise to handle even the most rambunctious of puppies with calm focus and a light heart. We are having a great time on the journey and Lucky's behavior has come leaps and bounds from where she was. I highly recommend her to anyone I know who has a dog in need of some training :)

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How old should a puppy be for training?

Dog training shouldn’t wait until you’re having behavior problems. If you get a new puppy, start from the beginning with professional training to give both you and your puppy the tools you need for a healthy relationship. Dog training is as much about teaching the owner how to interact with their new dog as it is about the dog learning to behave. Puppy training can start as early as eight weeks old. Trainers who offer puppy training programs may works specifically with dogs between the ages of 8 and 18 weeks old. Trainers can teach owners about potty training and how to deal with accidents, working with separation anxiety, and training your pooch out of destructive behaviors like chewing, biting and demand barking. Puppies will start to learn to walk on-leash and other basic skills.

In addition to behavior training, socializing your puppy is an important part of dog training. Socializing your dog means they become comfortable and confident in a variety of settings and have a great foundation for becoming a well-adjusted adult dog. After your puppy has had the proper vaccinations, you can start to introduce it to a variety of different dogs and people in safe settings.

How long does it take to train a puppy?

Dog training depends on the dog and how much homework the dog owner is willing to put in. Puppy training is similar to dog training in that the onus of the work depends on the owner learning new ways to interact with their dog. For a quick crash course, you can opt for a single, two hour smart-start puppy training consultation to teach you the ins and outs of being a new dog parent. You can learn how to manage potty training and what to do if the puppy experiences separation anxiety. As long as you’re willing to work on dog training a little bit each day, your puppy will quickly learn these new behaviors. If you’re not confident about training your puppy yourself, you can enroll in a 6- to 8-week puppy training course, with weekly lessons touching on everything from bite control to obedience. Puppies usually need to be at least three months old for group training classes. If you want more intensive one-on-one work, you can opt for private lessons. Some behavior problems can be resolved in one session if the dog owner learns and can implement new skills. In the case of more serious issues, 3 to 10 private sessions can typically correct challenges.

Which dog training method is best?

The best type of dog training for both you and your dog depends on the outcomes you hope to achieve. If you want your dog to learn agility training, go to someone who specializes in those techniques. Regardless of whether you want your dog to learn basic behavior or competitive-level tricks, the majority of dog training is actually about training the owner how to communicate with their dog. Most professional dog trainers agree that a model of training based on positive reinforcement breeds a happy, healthy, well-adjusted dog. The alternative to positive reinforcement training is using force or aggression techniques like physical punishment or shock-collar training to get the dog to do (or not do) a behavior. While the dog may learn how to behavior as you direct, it is also learning to communicate with force and aggression, and will in turn use those behaviors on other dogs (or people) that are smaller or weaker than it is. Before signing up with a dog trainer, meet with the trainer and ask for references. Watch the trainer interact with your dog, and make sure they treat your dog with patience and firm kindness. Ask them questions about their training methods:

  • What type of training methods do you use?
  • What is your background and training, and how did you become a dog trainer?
  • How long do you expect that we will work together before we achieve the results I’m after?
