Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What’s the best way to set up a consultation or an appointment with a mover during the COVID-19 pandemic?

If you’re trying to set up a consultation or an appointment with a mover during the COVID-19 pandemic, make sure to use digital tools to avoid exposure. When searching for movers online, ask if they’d be willing to do a video chat to assess the size of your move. This will be in place of the typical “walk-through” they perform, and they may be able to give you a price quote. You can also discuss safe strategies for completing the job during your call or video chat.

Are there ways to be safe if I hire a mover when social distancing?

If you decide to hire a mover, consider making adjustments to accommodate current guidelines. This may involve staying outside while the mover works inside your home or letting the mover handle only parts of the move.

It’s important to follow social distancing guidelines while performing any service work. For example, do not make physical contact with the movers, maintain at least 6 feet of distance between you at all times, and use digital payments instead of cash or a check.

Does a mover need to enter my home?

A mover will likely need to enter your home -- unless you’ve placed all of your belongings outside beforehand. To stay safe during the COVID-19 pandemic, you might to consider keeping all (or most) of the work outside and/or having at-risk individuals leave the house while the movers work.

You can minimize exposure by doing a preliminary walk-through by video call instead of in person. Discuss your options with the top movers near you before hiring one.

Do movers offer remote or virtual services?

Movers generally need to be present to do their job. But if you come across a mover’s profile that states they’re offering remote services, you can contact them to see what those services include.

How can I find out if a mover is considered an essential COVID-19 service provider?

Your local city or state’s government website is a great resource if you’re trying to figure out whether a mover is considered an essential service provider during the COVID-19 pandemic.

For a source of national guidelines, visit the CISA website’s Identifying Critical Infrastructure During COVID-19. On this page, you’ll find 16 categories of critical infrastructure sectors. But note that some -- not all --  jurisdictions follow CISA’s definitions of critical infrastructure.

Can I use digital payments to pay for moving services?

Most local moving companies are likely to accept some form of digital payment. Particularly with the COVID-19 pandemic, more companies are likely to conduct transactions through platforms like PayPal, Zelle, Square Cash, Venmo, Google Pay and more.

To ensure the mover accepts a platform you can use, you can peruse the mover’s online profile and see what is listed there. You can also ask the mover about payment policies during a consultation call.

What is considered a local move vs. a long-distance move?

Local moves are among the most common moves. Unlike a long-distance move, a local move is typically less than 50 miles and does not cross state lines. Generally, a local move only takes one day, and movers tend to charge by the hour.

The definition of a long-distance move may vary depending on the moving company. Generally, a long-distance considered to be any move of 400 miles or more. However, some say a long-distance move is over 50-100 miles.

Local Move

A move under 50 miles

Long-Distance Move

A move over 50-100 miles or over 400 miles; may also be called an “interstate move” or “out-of-state move”

Out-of-State Move

A move that crosses state lines; may also be called an “interstate move” or “long-distance move”

Interstate Move

A move that crosses state lines; may also be called an “out-of-state move” or “long-distance move”

Intrastate Move

A move that begins and ends in the same state, typically beyond 50 miles

Interstate moves require additional legal preparation and will incur additional costs for distance, the amount and weight of your items, the preparation required and various other factors. Moving companies tend to do an initial weighing of the truck, which you should be present for.

A move that crosses state lines is considered an interstate move or an out-of-state move. Contrast this with an intrastate move, which begins and ends in the same state, but is typically above 50 miles.

To determine whether your move is local or long-distance, contact the best movers in your area.

How much does it cost for long-distance movers?

Long-distance movers transport your belongings across the country for you. No more renting a trailer and road-tripping from state to state with your entire house hitched to your bumper. Long-distance movers make the move happen so you can fly to your new home, suitcase in hand, and wait for your furniture to arrive. Nationally, the average price range for long-distance movers is $1,490-$2,230. The distance you are moving and the number of cubic feet the movers have to transport will both affect cost. Another factor in long-distance moving costs is whether you choose to pay for an exclusive move or a consolidated move.

In an exclusive move, which is more expensive, your belongings are the only cargo on the moving truck. The movers travel directly to your new house and deliver your belongings on a scheduled day. A consolidated move is more affordable because the movers transport your belongings along with those of other people, saving them time and gas — which means you save money. The downside is that your belongings typically arrive with a two-week delivery window rather than on a prescheduled day. Read reviews to make sure you can trust the company with your possessions to ensure a peaceful moving process.

How much do you tip movers?

It’s recommended that you tip your movers individually around $4 to $5 per hour. For example, if a team of four movers spends a half-day (four hours) on your move, tip each mover $20. Or, some people tip 5% to 10% of their total bill for small moves and 15% to 20% for larger moves.

If you’re moving across state lines, you may hire different crews to load and unload your goods. In that case, divide the tips between both crews. It’s also a good rule of thumb to add a bit extra for tipping movers if you have special circumstances that have made the move harder, like a spiral staircase or an exceptionally heavy sofa.

Can you move furniture by yourself?

You might be able to move smaller items like nightstands, small desks, chairs and small tables by yourself. However, it’s best to get a professional mover near you to move larger items such as couches, dressers, armoires and televisions.

If you do decide to move furniture by yourself, carefully lift and lower items and take your time.

I was extremely satisfied with my movers that were provided through this company! They were very helpful, never complaint about the amount of stairs that the new apartment was located and communicated with me about the time of their arrival. I will definitely be using Space Express Moving company for any future moves and highly recommend.

Sunbiz Moving I am so glad I finally have a moving company I can feel 100% confident in choosing and also recommending. I like many people, have had at least one terrible experience with a moving company in my case only one horrific experience…with (NOBEL relocation moving company) Because I was severely burned by Nobel moving company, I was VERY careful about choosing my most recent moving company. I researched many moving companies, personally spoke with at least FIVE (5) of the staff members either via telephone or many email messages. Finally, for a variety of reasons I choose SUNBIZ MOVING..in part because they gave me a competitive flat rate…and I am so glad I chose SUNBIZ. They showed up with four young, professional, friendly, accommodating men who worked diligently through out the day, taking special care to pack everything carefully and thoughtfully. Although there were a couple of hiccups with the condominium elevator, these guys took it in stride, never complaining, just doing what needed to be done to get the move finished. I believe the move took them longer than they anticipated, but they never complained and worked relentlessly. At the end they put everything in my storage unit and worked diligently to get everything in the one unit so I wouldn’t have to pay extra for another. As a real estate agent I will be recommending SUNBIZ as my “Go to” Moving Company. I highly Recommend!

The company couldn’t do the move on the day I wanted and submitted on thumbtack. But they responded with a time and day of when they could. This happened to be on the 1st of the month, in the afternoon. Since the company could clearly see my bid was for a business office move, and because they are on here it never occurred to me that they would cancel on the same day they are suppose to show up. I’m absolutely shocked at how unprofessional these people are. It’s stressful enough moving a business office. I have all my employees helping now and we have to find other movers because I can’t afford to have my office shut down until Sunday, for these people to may cancel on me again. Because now I will be paying them to move and fee’s from my building because I’m not out by 1st of month. Don’t use this company if you need someone reliable.

Planning my move with Frank was a pleasure. He is friendly and professional. He sent me the estimate by email so I was able to see the paperwork before the move. On moving day, Dmitry and Sergei were efficient and worked very well as a team. No time was wasted, no dilly dallying, no "extra" travel time. As promised, they finished whole thing, door to door, in just three hours. It was a smooth and anxiety-free process. I was disappointed that there were nicks on my dining room table and Bombe chest, but Dmitry provided me with a wood stain pen that hid the damage pretty well. All in all, I was happy with my Pick Up Mover experience and will definitely use them again.

Alex, Yuri, David and Michael did a fantastic job! They were all very professional and courteous. They worked extremely hard for 8 hours with minimal breaks and carried lots of heavy boxes and furniture. Nothing was broken or misplaced. Most of all, they had such a good attitude that I never felt bad asking them to move something to a different location after they had initially carried it in. They made the move as stress-free as possible. Well worth every cent! Thanks very much to the moving team and the office staff as well! We would definitely recommend them to a friend.

Other than the guys showing up a little late all went well. Antonio allowed me to negotiate a flat fee price which I was very happy about, since I have move MANY times in the past and have seen the best and have also seen the worst. Guys were a little slow loading and unloading, but I was okay with that since I was paying a flat fee. If I was paying by the hour I would have been extremely upset. Alden and Mike, the two movers were professional and courteous and all of my stuff was moved without incident. I would recommend Xtrodinary Movers, but like with any other company I would try to get a flat fee and help out as much as you can. I had everything ready to go and in the living room and master bed. I understand they get lied to enough times about what is actually in the home, so I had mine all ready for them, broke down the beds, the dining room table and helped move things into the ready for them. Thanks Antonio for working with me as well!

Very professionals. They never stopped, very polite, clean and helpful. Usually other movers try to do it slow or take longer routes to arrive to delivery area to charge you more time, they picked the best route and they did everything as fast as possible. I definitely recommend their service. 5 stars!

Last week (Aug 19) I had my 2nd move scheduled with MoveItSquad. The first time I used them (Jan 2022), I couldn't have asked for a better experience. Keanu & DJ were absolutely phenomenal. Excellent communication and handled all of my items with care. However, the 2nd time I used this company (Aug 19th), it couldn't have gone any worse. I confirmed at 10am for my 12pm move. However, at 12pm, when they were supposed to already be at my storage unit, the person I was texting with said they were wrapping up with another client. I figured there would be a delay, but I was then told no one would be showing up until 2pm. Unfortunately, I had another appointment at that time so I had to drive back in the opposite direction & they assured me they would be ready to dispatch when my appointment was over. I let them know I would be finished a little after 4pm. At 4:11pm, I let them know I was 30 minutes away & they told me that someone would be dispatched after their return from lunch, which confused me because they told me they'd be ready to dispatch as soon as I was ready. I then requested the manager's number, and in the end, I came to realize that the "manager" who's number was given to me was just the other driver. I am still unsure if he is a manager. However, what was strange was that this "manager" that was communicating with me kept referring to the previous person I was speaking with as "they" or "them" and acted as though he was not with the person that was supposed to be dispatched. However, the "manager" and driver were together the entire time. Since they were going to be "at lunch", I made a stop before going to the unit. I called again at around 5:30pm & they told me they were 30 minutes away. At 6:00pm, they asked if they could come the next day, which was not possible because my contract with the storage unit was ending that day. They said they would show up and I waited and waited. I called both numbers I was corresponding with over 10-15 times, sent text messages, and was getting no response. I thought my number was blocked & no one was coming anymore. I finally gave the numbers to one of my friends to call and someone answered. The "manager" and driver showed up to my unit at 7:30pm. Original time scheduled 12:00pm Arrival time 7:30pm They brought all of my items to my home and did not leave my house until 11:00pm, which is a completely inappropriate time for 2 strange men to be in someone's home. When I asked why no one answered my calls or texts, I did not get a response. They consistently lied to me for the entire day and then had no explanation as to why no one would answer my calls or text messages when I had been waiting for hours. Then, I was told that I was going to pay $360 for this move and was charged $415 in the end. My original quote was $600-$700 and to be honest, I would have rather paid that much to avoid the disrespect and complete disregard for my time. He (the "manager", who was really Edison) then offered me a free sofa from their warehouse, but to be completely honest, I felt uncomfortable and no longer wanted to do any kind of business, even if it was going to be free, with them. Not only that, but at nearly 1:00am, the "manager" sent me an "accidental" text that seemed extremely creepy and inappropriate. While it could have been an accident, there is a level of professionalism that needs to be maintained when dealing with clients. I know this all sounds very confusing, so you can see the pictures of the texts to follow along a bit better. I hate writing poor reviews, but this was honestly the most disrespect I have ever felt when paying for a service. I was a returning customer, I'm currently serving in the military, and I was really excited to support this business again. I'm not sure who from the company will read this review, it may even be the people who completed the job, but I do hope this never happens to a customer ever again. Moving is already stressful enough and I understand there may be hiccups, but this entire process completely lacked integrity, honesty, and respect. I would only recommend if you can get Keanu and DJ.
