Jay is easily one of the best math tutors I have ever had. He is always on time to all of are scheduled appointments. When I'm struggling with a particular concept in honors geometry he stays longer on his own time to help me.

Carlton, is absolutely wonderful not to mention an amazing math tutor. My son Maddox was failing Algebra and with just one month left of school I decided to hire Carlton to see if he could help him bring his grade up. Thanks to Carlton, Maddox is passing his Algebra class! Carlton teaches my son in a way that he can understand and apply the different formulas. Every child learns differently, and Algebra is a difficult subject for most middle school students like my son. I'm so happy that Carlton was able to help! Also, Carlton was very flexible and worked with our schedule and budget. I totally recommend Carlton and will be reaching out to him again in the future if needed! Thanks Carlton!!!

Christine is a former colleague of mine. We taught primary school together for two years, and during that time I was able to get to know her as a teacher and friend. Honestly, she is one of the best teachers I have ever worked with. She always puts the needs and interests of the student above her own and is dedicated to see each student reach their full potential. She expects a lot from her students because she knows they will succeed with diligence and hard work. She takes time to prepare specialized lessons for each individual learner and always seems to know how to build upon that person's particular strengths and weaknesses. I highly recommend her as a tutor and teacher.

Joe is a true character. Incredibly witty, his dry humor and frankness is a welcome breath of fresh air in a current environment of adamant political correctness. Nevertheless, he is still sensitive toward one’s personal insecurities; moreover, he is transparent about his own. Make no mistake, however: as personable as he is, that is how adept he is at being a tutor. When he worked for EXCEL/COMPASS, a two year STEM program at the University of Central Florida (UCF) geared towards assisting freshmen and sophomores in their math and science courses, he was always accessible and PATIENT, regardless of his personal overall state. Be it Calculus, College Physics, or Organic Chemistry, he was ready to help any student out with a confused look on their face. But what I admired most about him is his “realness”. He didn’t forget that, as students, we were often short on time and so offered tons of quick techniques to get through the graded assignment at hand-without an ounce of judgement, ever. I was saddened when he left the EXCEL/COMPASS program, but confident that he will continue to deliver quality assistance to his future pupils.

I had a great experience with the tutoring service I have received from TutorCare LLC. My tutor explained everything step by step, let me ask questions, and then let me try to solve the problems by myself. She lead to me to the solutions by great explanation, examples, and guiding solutions. I was not able to get to the results by myself; however, my tutor taught me how to help myself, how to find solutions, and how to succeed in the required subjects. I will never forget this great experience and her advice will follow me wherever I go. Thank you for all your help. Best, Anita

        Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How do you find a good math tutor?

Math home tutors are available for any age student, from elementary school to postgraduate studies. Rates will vary based on the tutor’s background, education and experience. To find a good math tutor, first determine your learning goals. Do you need help understanding and completing homework assignments? Are you preparing for the math portion of a standardized test? Next, read reviews from current and former students. Find someone with proven success helping students achieve their goals. If you want help on an ongoing basis, decide what your budget is and identify the tutors who fall within your range. Ask if there are additional fees for travel, as some home math tutors include travel costs in their rates and others charge extra. Ask about session length and the tutor’s teaching style, and whether they also offer online sessions or group sessions. Finally, schedule a single session with each of the math tutors you think are best to see who is the best fit.

How much do math tutors cost?

Math is a subject that’s challenging for many students. Fortunately, home math tutors can help students excel in math by working with them in focused one-on-one tutoring sessions. The cost for math tutors varies based on the type of math, the expertise and experience of the tutor, and geographic location. Pricing may range between $40 and $100 per hour, depending on the math subject. As a rule, the more complex the subject matter, the more the math tutor will charge for the lessons. The cost reflects the math tutor’s advanced studies and the work required for them to be able to teach on the subject. Frequency can also affect costs. Students can buy packages of lessons for a lower cost per session than buying individually. Nationally, the average hourly rate for a geometry home tutor is $50-$60. The national average rate for an algebra home tutor is $40-$50 per hour. For generalized math tutors, the national average ranges between $40 and $50 per hour. More intensive standardized test prep studies and math tutoring average $70-$100 per hour.

How much does home tutoring cost?

Investing in home tutoring is an investment in your child’s future. Home tutors work one on one with your child to address their challenge areas and provide room for intellectual growth that may not happen in a busy classroom. The cost of home tutors depends on multiple factors including where you live, the tutor’s background and education, the subject matter, and how often the tutor comes. Test prep home tutoring is typically more expensive than single-subject tutoring. Here are some examples of average tutoring costs:

        • National average cost for an algebra home tutor: $40-$50 per hour.
        • National average cost for a French home tutor: $30-$50 per hour.
